Birding in Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast | Cahuita National Park
The walk through Cahuita National Park can be absolutely gorgeous.

Costa Rica's Caribbean coast almost feels like a different country with a different culture, different architecture, different food, different vibes, and, of course, with different birds. Honestly, we didn't even come for the birds. We were (relatively) close by before our birding trip to Braulio Carrillo and had a Saturday to spare. So why not head here, I thought. You'll see why in this video.

Beautiful video!! That euphonia is gorgeous, deserve a nice T-shirt design for the latin american collection you have. Very looking forward for it!! 😉👕🧡
The view from your Airbnb looks great, what was the name and do you recommend it ?
It’s actually a rather new hotel in town called Arenal Morana. It was a very good budget option at the time, everything brand new and well done. They’re also associated with the Xilopalo so you get access to their pool and free breakfast I believe. I’d highly recommend it, incredible views especially from the corner room. Like I mentioned in the video, I really value walking distance to restaurants and bars and it’s a perfect balance.
This is so funny, im on my internship in CR right now, and this weekend me and our internship crew visited cahuita! Yesterday, we went to the NP, lovely to see your take on it. I found the amounts of beach goers and tourists (even though i am one) a bit annoying at times, and the hand-tame monkeys an raccoons made it feel like a zoo, but the other animals/birds where great! Sadly i wasnt able to get good photos of my target that day, magnificent frigatebird (only saw them distantly). Lovely to see your videos, ¡Pura Vida!
What a nice place! ❤ I love your videos and especially the empanada Time. I agree, Del Ritas Patties are the best in town.
My very first Costa Rica experience also was Cahuita/Puerto Viejo/Cocles, back in 1992. And indeed totally different to the rest of the country. Returned there 6 times, but there was no spare time to visit the Caribbean on our last trip... Btw, beautiful footage of beautiful bird species!
Thats great!!! You definitely should come to Colombia where its super easy to see 120+ species in a single day.
Thank you! I really hope to go birding Colombia some day soon! Any recommendations? The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a region that I'm really curious about. I've been in the area once before but sadly not for birdwatching... Birding in Costa Rica can also be much more productive, but the beach towns are definitely not the best places ;)
Thanks Tim for the video
You're very welcome! Thanks for stopping by :)
Thanks a lot!! Now a lot more clear for me with those identification tips. Pura Vida!🪶💚
Thanks so much :) These ID videos are a lot of fun to make!
Another tricky group! Thanks.
Thanks! I'm still really struggling with them. Well, now I need to find some empids to see if it helped ;)
Great video, but...oh dear, the Flycatchers...or as we call them: LBB's...Little Brown Birds, when it comes to birding in CR 😂😂😂
Oh, yes... I've found that some times the best cure is to just look at some other birds :D
Wow your camera sure is good at zooming in on all these amazing birds
Haha, thanks, I guess :) The nicer shots are made with a digiscoping setup, my phone through my scope. When things get shakier and grainy I've had to switch to my camera which has seen better days ;)
Lovely little birds...always exciting when we see these. And they produce the same sounds as squirrel monkeys😅🙂👍
I never even noticed the squirrel monkey comparison , so true :D
@@jabirustories when I was working in our zoo, a colleague mentioned this, as she thought, there was a squirrel monkey, that managed to escape from the enclosure...but it just was a nuthatch in the trees 😅. From then on, I always think of squirrel monkeys when observing these birds 🙈🙂
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
tourist overcrowding is a problem .. i'm a loner & freak out in lg groups, but, problem is tourism = 💴💶💷💵 & ppl are social creatures, the 'water cooler' effect ... even in scotland we see the damage left behind .. the canary islands & parts of europe are seeing violent confrontations between locals & tourists .. hope it doesn't come to this in CR ..
This was awesome! So enjoyable to watch! Thank you!
Hey, thanks for watching - really happy you enjoyed it! It was a lot of fun to edit even though I didn't have too much footage of my own.
I really like your videos. They were great for preparing me for my trip to Costa Rica last month and now that I am back I appreciate them even more as I have been to these places. I was with a small group and we found all our quetzals ourselves and without any crowds. I certainly prefer it that way. That being said, I do try to see a rare vagrant if it shows up close to where I live. But that's fun also because I know I'll meet many of my local birding buddies there. I would not travel long distances to see a rare bird. Looking forward to your next video from cerro de la muerte. I am sure you saw Volcana Juncos 😍
Thanks so much for the kind words, it really means a lot! Sounds like you had a great time in Costa Rica - I'm happy to hear that and to even have helped a little :) On "chasing" vagrants: Great point, that social aspect of birding can be really great! Thinking about it, it's something I do miss a little bit here.
aou doesnt own the names-has no right to do this
🙂👍👍👍
We stayed in San Gerardo for a few days last July and the birding (and everything else) was wonderful. The groups of people at the side of the road made it easy to know where the quetzals were and we got some good pictures, but it was much more special to find other quetzals on our own as we were walking along the road later that morning.
Very true - it’s much more rewarding to find birds on your own but the groups are a good fallback option
I live in the US (New England) and tend not to chase certain vagrants because of potential crowding. As long as the bird is not disturb, I’m ok with the general public appreciating their presence , but it takes away from the pleasures I experience while birding.
Agreed, it just feels strange to watch a bird from a crowd. To be fair, the guides in Dota do a good job of managing the groups and respecting the birds. But it’s really the only time I’ve experienced something like this here. Germany also seems to be quite tame in comparison to what you sometimes see from the UK or the US (and apparently Canada). Then again, I really try to refrain from twitching…
Wow, these were SPECTACULAR images! Well done, especially the hummingbird footage was great, loved it. Well, despite the fact, that the Quetzal footage was amazing, we do not really like these crowds of people. Remember a trip to Namibia years ago, when DOZENS of buses stopped behind us at a group of lions in Etosha...has it's pros and cons.
Thanks! It really does take away from the experience a bit but overall it’s such a lovely trip up there and I already know I’m going back next year. Once a year is enough for me though 😅 It always feels a bit dishonest to be complaining about these crowds, given that in the end we’re part of the crowd too… but yes, and poor lions 🫤
.😮😊
This is where we stayed for a few days on our trip. The people at the cabinas los quetzal were incredible and the birds and scenery were beautiful
I agree, Dota is absolutely fantastic and the people really are incredible. When I went up there last year, my car broke down in the valley and our hosts went above and beyond to help us.
Don't forget Canadians when it comes to twitching. I'm in Southern Ontario and when a rarity shows it's insane. If and when I go to CR the resplendent quetzal would be tops on my must see list but I understand your concerns
Haha, I had no idea! To be fair - while I'm not a fan of the crowds the guides do a great job at managing them. It was all calm and respectful. I do think it's great that people get to experience this. And you can tell that it's given the town a great opportunity that the people are making the most of. Despite the quetzal "madness", it's actually one of my favorite spots in the country!
I got back from my trip to cr about a week ago and am now reliving my experiences through your videos lol. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I’ll do my best 😅 Hope you had a fantastic time in Costa Rica!
😮😮😮😮😮😮❤❤❤❤❤
What a nice video! I hope you can come to Colombia to see many other incredible birds!!!
Oh, I would love to come to Colombia. Hopefully soon 🙏 Thanks so much!

Yes, another great tutorial complete with a TICS! THANK YOU VERY MUCH. p.s. any chance of doing one for Costa Rica's hummingbirds.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! Hummingbirds are a great idea, I'll definitely do one! Well, with 50 or so species, I'll probably have to do an entire series :)
I can remember better after viewing your tutorial video. Thank you for sharing!

Congrats on getting the Cape May Warbler! Thanks for another interesting episode. More please .....
Working on it :) Thank you for watching and the kind words!
Congrats on hitting your 75 target ... well done! Good video, felt like I was there too. Look forward to more birding adventures.
Thanks for the feedback! It's definitely something I can't do all the time but even while editing I felt it might be more immersive. Looking forward to trying something similar again soon, maybe for Global Big Day?
Loved the location, great walk with stunning birds 🦅
Thank you! It's really a fantastic place and I can only recommend spending a couple of nights in the area when visiting the country. It might not be as flashy as some of the better known hotspots but it's absolutely worth it for the birds :)
Hello, I speak from Brazil. I don't know your language, I'm using a translator. Does the e-book have tips on places with bird feeders?

@@jabirustories thank you, my friend
Where was this a month ago 🥲 Awesome stuff, loved that place
Sorry about that 😅 It’s quite the trip from Nosara but I’ve been dying to go again and make a video - happy to hear you enjoyed the place! Hope you had a great trip overall!
Awesome video, love it 🥰 My wife and I are dreaming of Costa Rica 🇨🇷, we’re not unhappy, nor ungrateful of Bavaria, but we just love the Costa Rica’s stunning natural beauty, biodiversity and BIRDS. Thank you for doing these amazing visits/trips and sharing them with the world 🤗 Bless you and stay healthy!
Thanks so much for the kind words! It’s true, Costa Rica is an amazing country for nature lovers but I’d say you have it quite good in Bavaria as well 😉 One day (hopefully soon) I’d love to return to Mittenwald to look for the ptarmigans. I tried once for a weekend but sadly I was turned away by some heavy winds. Still a beautiful corner of the world!
This was fun! I hope you'll do it again, maybe when you get a grip on night-birds, so you can use the dark hours a bit? Maybe regrouping the birding spots when you know them better? So much planning involved, and the high temperature hours sure needs to be avoided if possible!
Thanks so much- I’m glad you enjoyed it 😊 Absolutely am planning to do it again but I might need to wait for the next migration season. By that time I’ll hopefully at least have an idea of the night birds too!
Totally unexpected local reference! You sell the shirts, my state sells the license plate! www.dfa.arkansas.gov/specialty-plates/details/game-fish-ivory-billed-woodpecker-plate😊
Beautiful place for bird watching Thanks for the coverage
Thanks so much for stopping by - glad you liked it :)
Really cool one this time and look...you got it! Congrats to 75 species. That's so nice! Seems also, that the area has much to offer, no matter what season. Looking foreward to the next exciting/entertaining/informative video. Happy birding and a very happy semana santa! Pura Vida
Thanks! It wasn’t my finest day but an exciting one for sure 😅 Really looking forward to rainy season, I’m curious as to what will happen with my favorite spots then! Pura vida 🙂

Monteverde is such a tourist trap, so many better places in Costa Rica
Monteverde is not the best place but Is a good one...
You could argue that Costa Rica is a tourist trap ;) I guess it depends on what you're looking for. If you want to experience authentic tico culture, it's not the place of course. Santa Elena is a town that caters to people (mostly tourists) who want to experience this natural gem. For sure, I could personally do without the ziplining, hanging bridges, and whatnot. But I'd be hesitant to call an area with such ecological diversity a "tourist trap". That's a label I reserve for Manuel Antonio (just kidding, kind of). For birders (and the channel is about birds after all), I'd be hard pressed to recommend a better place to see a Three-Wattled Bellbird, for instance. I'd say the popularity is justified. If I switch to making culture-based travel videos I'll reconsider :D
Shut up dude you are the trap in this nice video and channel! I’m from Monteverde and live in Chicago and believe I do not like here at all I’m just being responsible with my duties and that’s it but I miss it and a lot! So why don’t you go on your mental Trap and leg people do whatever they want ? Bye!
@@jabirustories what happens is that authentic tico culture is never a product. Because it's the authentic one, it doesn't come to you because you pay for it, but because you're part of the culture. You can't for example, buy the experience of an old guy from the rural area, you can't buy the love for cooking of a random señora, or the stories of the past about how we ended up being like this. Also culture changes and it's dinamic, our culture is integrating with yours which is also the reason why prices are leveling with the cost of living of parts of the us, and why we have better internet and many more things
@@joules_sw Well said, 100% agree!
Great stuff! It's getting me even more excited for my trip :D
Glad you enjoyed it :)
