My soul must have known on some level that Austin wasn’t going to be here much longer. I was moved so deeply during this performance I was just bawlin’ my eyes out. This is why I prefer to go to concerts alone now haha because I feel less self-conscious to lose myself completely and allow whatever emotion that may surface to do so freely.
It is of some comfort to know that in his short but impacting career he inspired so many listeners, musicians and friends that his influence is already embedded in the seams of the next generation of creative music. What a talent.
This is absolutely beautiful, which makes news of Austin's death all the more heartbreaking. People dying young is always a gut-wrenching thing to deal with, but when it happens to someone full of talent and promise...all you can do is honor their memory by cherishing the fruits of said talent.
I had never heard of Austin until I heard Daylight. Finding this recording after finding out of his death is bittersweet. This guy was shining an amazing and beautiful form of light.
Yesterday I was listening to Austin, and even watched this video for the HUNDREDTH time, then to click a tab over to Facebook to see the grim news. Like.... WTH?? Now I'm watching this again with a different feeling. smh... Sad. Seems like the best always die young... He had something no one else had. A lot of people can play, but no one could play the way he could. RIP Austin.
written by Douglas Marriner 24 November 2012 Austin truly was a force of nature. The scale and depth of the tributes to him already show how huge an impact he made in such a short space of time. I got to share the bandstand with him only once here in NYC, but was immediately taken aback by his musical genius, and by the huge generosity of spirit he gave to everything he did. [cont'd]
@Nina513 Thank you, Nina513! I was watching a live feed of Miz Badu's show at Coachella this summer and I happened to notice the bass player with feathers sticking out of his cap.
[more] ...By no means was he just a "prodigy kid", he was really THAT good, and equally as intense, wild and vibrant off-stage. Everybody who knew or played with him is crushed by the scale of this loss. I wish I could have spent more time with him. [cont'd]

Years later and I still think about this performance, being young and in the audience that night. Thank you very much for recording this ❤
So amazing coming back here after our boy Thundercat bagged a Grammy :')
