I was actually just thinking about how the song Amad by Duke Ellington ended up unintentionally shaping the way I make and compose music. When I was a trombone player in my colleges jazz band I got to play the solo at the end of Amad and it ended up changing everything. This solo was unlike most other solos in jazz band, as it was a solo over just one chord droning in the rhythm section. Because I didn't have to think about chord changes I was able to solo in a completely medatative state, allowing my subconscious and emotion to guide the what I was playing. Now years latter as a music producer most the music I produce has a lot of repeated groovin' drones while subtly changing things here and there. I actually just recently made the connection that the reason I compose music like this is because of the experience I had playing Amad.
As a musician, i found his in depth knowledge of bass lines motivating. I love how he talks about the overall structure of the song and not just how dope the bass line is. Really cool stuff honestly

Just a quick shout out to Shuggie Otis, the artist behind the original Strawberry Letter 23. Thanks, Thundercat, for introducing me to Jaco Pastorius. He is very moving.
SWV sampled that Jaco Pastorius song in 'Rain'. And then Kanye's Sunday Service did a cover of that SWV song on their album that came out last year. All versions are amazing.
Nothing simple about a so called-simple bass line... to nail it in time, to make it groove and to always have those notes in the pocket, not as a easy as some would think.
For me, there's something so special about the fact that Portrait of Tracy was once a flurry of activity in Jaco's brain and it has gone on to resonate with so, so many amazing bassists and musicians.
I think for context too, that Portrait fit into that album in just a certain way - I think it came after Kuru/Speak Like a Child, the vibe is set and then.... solo bass, Portrait of Tracy... that sound!... back in the day ... we were blown away...
So glad he brought up Jaco, thunder cat's music have always gave me the same type of vive in the way he feels the bass. Honestly Jaco still pretty forgotten by history and deserves to be recognized more.

D'Angelo Lady is one of the most under appreciated NeoSoul songs.. when Thundercat talks about 'feeling' it's got that quintessential smooth feeling in all its simplest forms
This is so great. I’ve played bass in a lot of different styles, but ultimately it was all of these types of songs that made me pick up the bass while all of my friends were getting guitars. Gimme that funk, that fell, that groove. It’s so much fun. I love playing stuff that gets people moving.
Jaco Pastorius's song was special. Another song with a bass that I can listen to all day is Footsteps in the dark by the Isley Brothers. Also "Music of the Mind" by Jamiroquai.
Thundercat is one of the most impressive voices on bass living today. Classic soul with a modern feel. Absolutely incredible, I’d love to sit and have a coffee with him and just pick his brain.
I’ve heard him play before and was blown away. Now I hear him talk about the music in such a deep way I’m even more impressed! Thanks for doing this interview.

Same! I'm not super into his music, but as a bassist I've become very interested in his rising career. I love watching videos like this where he actually breaks down his thoughts on the instrument.

Been playing bass for almost 20 years and now I see how much more I have to learn... Thudercat is a pure legend!
SWV sampled that Jaco Pastorius song in 'Rain'. And then Kanye's Sunday Service did a cover of that SWV song on their album that came out last year. All versions are amazing.
I love rain so much!
Also chingy & Tyrese pulling me back
EL-P sampled it on pigeon by cannibal ox. Pretty sick song
Who's SWV? I've never heard of him
@@Woahbro69420 Sisters With Voices! One of their most well known songs is 'Weak', which was also covered by Sunday Service lmfao
Nothing simple about a so called-simple bass line... to nail it in time, to make it groove and to always have those notes in the pocket, not as a easy as some would think.
Its simple compared to other basslines tho
It might be simple, but that does not mean it has to be easy. That's probably why he likes it so much
@@chowmane9584 Is it?
@@timluyten8660 I like this phrasing and will be using it in the future lmao
It is tho, just a couple of notes played in a rhythm and repeated couple of times
Never heard of this dude before but I LOVE the way he talks about music.
Jaco Pastorius - Portrait Of Tracy... the foundation of SWV’s “Rain” song. Wow! Mind-blown!
I legit never knew and I've been listening to "Rain" since the 90s.
mate I was like....this is rain!
thank you! I couldn't quite put my finger on where i heard it before
Finally somebody gives props to "You're In My System". The electrobass is killin on that track. Thundercat rules on all levels.
Yes!!!
Finally
I love that song so much
One of my favs of all time!
David Frank is slumbered DEEPLY on. Total beast on most System songs.
I love the way he knows the music so well his head movements are in time with it.
If you told me this was Rick James son I would totally believe you
Your profile pic is the best! I subscribed!
He is
He's not?
thats racist
He actuall kinda looks like a young rick james...a little.
For me, there's something so special about the fact that Portrait of Tracy was once a flurry of activity in Jaco's brain and it has gone on to resonate with so, so many amazing bassists and musicians.
I think you just decribed more or less what all music (or art in general) is.
@@thecooestlguyever True. But there is something special about Jaco, and portrait of tracy, that is just .... special.
Marcos Arnett you’re special :)
I think for context too, that Portrait fit into that album in just a certain way - I think it came after Kuru/Speak Like a Child, the vibe is set and then.... solo bass, Portrait of Tracy... that sound!... back in the day ... we were blown away...
@@uubuuh 100% this. The album sets it up so beautifully. And hearing it and thinking -- that's ONE instrument? and its a BASS?? that is life changing.
LOVE seeing Chameleon on here. That whole Headhunters album made me want to play bass. THat album has some of the slickest basslines ever!!
Now I wanna see Zach hill break down his favorite percussion performances
I just realised SWV may have sampled Portrait of Tracy for their song Rain.
Same!
Just blew my mind
May? They DID. Also, so did Chingy and Tyrese with “pullin me back”.
They DID sample Portrait Of Tracy
@@andrescen7577 I was wondering why that sounded so familiar. my dad played SWV all the time and I know he never listened to Jaco
I saw him front row at Red Rocks a couple years ago and it blew my mind, a true legend!
Watching my favorite bass player “Thundercat” play my favorite song “Portrait of Tracy.” Never thought this day would come 🤧
So glad he brought up Jaco, thunder cat's music have always gave me the same type of vive in the way he feels the bass. Honestly Jaco still pretty forgotten by history and deserves to be recognized more.
Galamot Shaku he’s said before jaco was huge for him
Jaco was a innovator for sure, some jazz heads put me up on him awhile back.
Jaco cant be forgotten....his album by the same name....his stuff with joni...my favorite along with bootsy.....victor Wooten....god I got a lot of favs
Jaco forgotten? Don't know what parts of the woods you roam, but that dude is still in high regard among all the musically inclined cats I talk too.
This guy needs to become a teacher! He explained everything so so well ❤
Notice the graphics person passed on trying to transcribe the Jaco piece :D
lol didnt notice
Yeah pretty cool, thought my screen was wet or fogged up.
"i'm not payed enough for this!"
Jaco was garbage.
@@shawnm3839 How could you be so brave? /s
I love that he digs Jack Bruce and Cream!
Jaco Pastorius's song was special. Another song with a bass that I can listen to all day is Footsteps in the dark by the Isley Brothers. Also "Music of the Mind" by Jamiroquai.
Space Ghost Skaduwee's Perspective thundercat interpolated footsteps on them changes
💯
A good day?
Nice mention. My father used to talk about Jaco Pastorius every day it seemed when I was a youngster 👞
His music IQ is so unreal.... amazingly talented
I've been playing bass (poorly) for twenty years. Never heard the full Bernard Wright album 'Nard before today. Good lord. My bad. Thank you Mr. Cat!
You can hear all these records in his playing that’s crazy
One of my favorite things about music is hearing the artist’s influence come through their playing without “biting” the original sound. So amazing.
That's how influence works, genius.
Annie Frank Why you gotta be negative man. Especially on a thundercat video
forreal!
I love how excited he looks explaining that Jaco bassline. The twinkle in his eye just makes me so happy
Thundercat is one of the most impressive voices on bass living today. Classic soul with a modern feel. Absolutely incredible, I’d love to sit and have a coffee with him and just pick his brain.
i’m 17 been playing bass for 4 years, i’m sure this video will inspire others to pick up the bass
His signature bass is so enormous that when he holds a regular 4 string P bass it looks like a guitar
Is it me or is he wearing the evangelion things the pilots put in their head?
thanks now I can't stop looking at it
Thundercat also has a song called "evangelion" you might like
-OY3AH!
It’s superficial
i love this man
Thundercat looks like he is ready to pilot a Eva.
Let's hope he doesn't have a 2- episode metaphysical breakdown
A man of culture right here
All right, I thought I was crazy when I saw the A-10 clips for the Evangelion pilots in his head.
@@IronMan-tk8uc it's nerdy af. Furry level nerd.
At least he's not wearing a plug suit.
a bassline is like the line a surfer carves on a wave as it pushes the rider along.
YO HE GOT THE REI AYANAMI INTERFACE HEADSET
oMG YES I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT THAT
And look awesome
I was wondering what they were, thanks for teaching me something new!
Ian Campbell it’s an interface??
I’ve heard him play before and was blown away. Now I hear him talk about the music in such a deep way I’m even more impressed! Thanks for doing this interview.
Hearing Thundercat talking about my musical legends makes me smile. He sounds like my nephews when auntie pulls out her LPs and gives musical lessons. I get the biggest kick when hours later they are still dusting off albums and just chilling. While I have most of the music on CDs and in my digital library, it is not the same vibe.
I love everything about this. Thundercat is a sound of a generation of new wave funk representing his generation love him. Such an amazing talent so glad to see him doing well here.
“If your feel sucks, then you suck” truth.
Jonathan Parker my favorite artist now
Day 1 jazz band
Thundercat has taste. Love his appreciation for players who get to the heart of it, and understand that's transcendent.
The fact that he can play such a difficult song like Portrait of Tracy just speaks to his genius even more.
I'm in awe.
Not a HUGE Thundercat fan, but no denying he's extremely talented. I just wanted to say, it's 2020! He looks like he's lost a ton of weight, he looks great, and most importantly, he looks HAPPY. Best wishes! :) This was fun to watch him break these bass lines down. More please!
Same! I'm not super into his music, but as a bassist I've become very interested in his rising career. I love watching videos like this where he actually breaks down his thoughts on the instrument.
After listening to his newest record I don't get the impression that he's been super happy lately tbh
The way he explained the role of the bass in songs just unlocked a level of understanding i've never had or considered. It's something i've picked up on lightly without understanding it over the years, but that just straight up made it clear to me.
So good to see Bernard Wright get some more limelight. His ‘Nard album is one of the best ever!!
