I am very proud of my friend Virgil. The fact that Holdsworth has chosen him as his drummer speaks in volumes about Virgil's greatness. All the haters (spectators) should show some respect.
Holdsworth was the old master with his own personal vocabulary on his instrument, not to mention rare technical facility. Peralta was the young wizard with a transcendent gift for improvisation who picks up right where Holdsworth left off. Found out about him too late sadly. The fact that documents like this turn up exist reinforces the legend, if you are hanging with the greats you are among them. Great rhythm section too. That is a special clip that was captured right there.
2. ... and I walked away thinking I had just seen a monster session guy play an incredible live set, worthy of a one take recording. Flawless. I'll see them next month and I look forward to it. I'm just glad that we all get to see Allan so much in the past 3 years. He's an incredibly talented and gracious man
What's with all the Virgil hate?! Has anyone posting here ever seen/heard Chad Wackerman play this tune with Allan? He beats the SH*T out of the drums...isn't dynamic in the least, eve while the other band member are blowing. Virgil is one of the finest drummers of the past 50 years, period. He's got great groove and dynamics...this tune isn't exactly a smooth funk jam, people.
Um...Allan made a point of telling me how thrilled he was with Virgil's playing a few months ago one night behind The Baked Potato in Los Angeles..Allan has been recording tracks for his new CD with Virgil as the drummer...and I quote (from Allan) "Virgil Donati !!!". The joy of first-hand knowledge.
1. As someone mentioned, I agree the live drum mix has a bit of point/edge to it. Maybe a bit more aggressive in the kick drum area but VIrgil's kit wouldn't sound like Chad's now would it... I actually closed my eyes and listened and what I hear are musician doing work and interpreting Allan's music in their own way. It's different than what I'm used to hearing for a long time now but let's not forget what a huge part of what AH's music is: improv. I saw Virgil play with Neil Schon and I walke
@Samsgarden Hey, do us a favor then. Contact Allan, and let him know that he is not paying attention to dynamics. You should lecture him on that, so he can choose better musicians for his band. ;)
+Hitomi Demers I was the one that recorded it. I have more videos of him playing but unfortunately the files are extremely large and my internet is terribly slow -_-"... I'd finish my month's data quota just uploading 1 video.
Dammit- Austin looked far far too young for dying - rest in peace - and Virgil allready mad it to my (humble) personal top 100 all time drummers list- so anyone who could get a chance to watch him play.... !
Thanks for posting but it will be easier for people to find if you include 'Allan Holdsworth' in the title. I also agree with Kenman540, Virgil, while a great technician, really lacks musicality.
Virgil is a great drummer don't get me wrong, but His lack of dynamics and wanting to push the tempo makes ne nervous and I can't even watch half of this this video, that dude needs to leave some space and quit over playing
@Showmehemusic I don't play drums, but you don't have to be so offencive in your trolling. This is a AU gig, allan cant afford to bring his band. Virgil is a great drummer. I know Allan's music well, and am personal friends of Allans friends. You just can tell Allan isnt fully comfortable in his improv with this group. I have seen allan on and off with many musicans for the last 20 years live, and it's not just about playing through the tunes in real jazz/improv.
@jamesedwardtheobald But he got divorced years ago -still grieving? Look, I feel for him and all but it's a part of his personality to be self deprecating, and I think he's dating now, so onward and upward Allan!
@carvindc400 No thanks. I'm almost one hundred percent certain that Allan didn't form the group -Virgil did. But I don't know the voracity of this claim and I'm not particularly concerned about it because it's sidestepping the issue. -Virgil is a pretty un-dynamic drummer and remarkably simplistic for someone who solos with such ornamentation. The Virgilphiles disapprove -I'll wear that.
@Showmehemusic Virgil is a brute with no sensitivity, I've never heard him play in an understated fashion, this problem isn't exclusive to VD and it's not a technical issue either; it's musical. Novak does this tune a lot more justice th-cam.com/video/5Na6ecWBygo/w-d-xo.html
@Samsgarden Maybe you are the one lacking sensitivity and cannot feel his great dynamics and playing... or maybe you just prefer more conventional players and cannot stand his crazier playing... If you don´t like him, don´t listen to him...
Had no idea Austin ever played with Allan !! Wow
Austin Peralta is incredible and makes me smile. Thank you Austin!!! We miss you both.
I am very proud of my friend Virgil. The fact that Holdsworth has chosen him as his drummer speaks in volumes about Virgil's greatness.

Holdsworth and his alien friend,Virgil!

I don't know what it is about this song that touches me so much. Rest in peace Austin Peralta and Allan Holdsworth. Beautiful work!
Weird to imagine *both* of these guys gone.

RIP Austin Peralta.
You guys can increase the resolution for a better sound quality if you wish :) !!
Truly AMAZING
Your friend is GREAT! Notice how he emphasizes with a beat,every chord hit by Allan...very good stuff

That cat Peralta is pretty tasteful.

Repose en paix Austin
@FMAPS1
Oh God no! I thought we passed that stage in the 80's and 90's.

@Samsgarden
'Veracity' before someone correct me.
What's that song name, do you guys know?
@Samsgarden Hey, do us a favor then. Contact Allan, and let him know that he is not paying attention to dynamics. You should lecture him on that, so he can choose better musicians for his band. ;)
@pleximanic Thanks! I got a version of that song with Vinnie. Awesome stuff.
It took a while for Virgil to realise he was Allans drummer and not the Virgil show with Allan Holdsworth??
@renardvert Looking Glass!
Do you have any information about the original source for this video?
+Hitomi Demers I was the one that recorded it. I have more videos of him playing but unfortunately the files are extremely large and my internet is terribly slow -_-"... I'd finish my month's data quota just uploading 1 video.
@@VeryStrangeweather maybe days are better now?
Dammit- Austin looked far far too young for dying - rest in peace - and Virgil allready mad it to my (humble) personal top 100 all time drummers list- so anyone who could get a chance to watch him play.... !
LOL... the guy who sing along "very out of pitch" awesome haha!
pleximanic I would sing too
sii!!jajajajjaa canta como yo!jajajjaa
That's some level 8 harmony, what are you talking about?!
Thanks for posting but it will be easier for people to find if you include 'Allan Holdsworth' in the title.
I also agree with Kenman540, Virgil, while a great technician, really lacks musicality.
@zoozazoot
It's actually the way he plays.
@DSherinian1111 ....tell it like it is D.....
Virgil is a great drummer don't get me wrong, but His lack of dynamics and wanting to push the tempo makes ne nervous and I can't even watch half of this this video, that dude needs to leave some space and quit over playing

Someone need to make him an amazing and very reliable MIDI controller and give him a couple of Oberheim Matrix 12s!
And this is not the first time AS joins forces with Donati... just a heads-up for the haters : )
@jamesedwardtheobald
But he got divorced years ago -still grieving?
Look, I feel for him and all but it's a part of his personality to be self deprecating, and I think he's dating now, so onward and upward Allan!
@Samsgarden go listen to planet X songs and you'll see how virgil's playing is «simple»
@jamesedwardtheobald
I have -heaps.
Allan has OCD, he'll never be happy with anything he does. I actually prefer him live but I'm just a mere mortal.
@carvindc400
No thanks. I'm almost one hundred percent certain that Allan didn't form the group -Virgil did. The Virgilphiles disapprove -I'll wear that.
@DSherinian1111
I think it was the other way around actually.
Not a hater -Virgil is brilliant but his rhythm is pretty facile.
@jamesedwardtheobald
Rare? You on drugs?
Maybe the drummer could've realized this is a ballad-type piece, and toned his action down a little.
William Miller not really. Heard Tony Williams bashing the hell out of the drums on the original?
Donati extremely skilled but boring square and non-dynamic.
@carvindc400
There are no dynamics in this video. No maybe about it.
@Showmehemusic
Virgil is a brute with no sensitivity, I've never heard him play in an understated fashion, this problem isn't exclusive to VD and it's not a technical issue either; it's musical.
Novak does this tune a lot more justice
