    I had one for 5 years, great cars - when working correctly! Thankfully my one ABC issue was a blown flex line but loads of other lovely money eating bits (gearbox sensor, lots & lots of electrical gremlins - door wiring is a nightmare, interior trim falling off etc etc... - engine is bomb proof though) & they do rust/corrode - mine had aluminium corrosion on the bottom of the doors & along the front of the bonnet & very expensive to fix along with rust starting on the rear (steel) arches - and they do go around the sun roof! Mine was still low mileage when sold (82k) & FSH. I still take a peek at the CL55Ks now and again - but after driving one back to back with my CLK500 5.5 (CLK550) - the CLK is just as fast & had no issues in the last 4 1/2 years of ownership - apart from rust on the passenger rear which is down to a prat leaving a nice scratch in a carpark :-( - do for the CLK500 - MUCH better & almost as much room.

      Interesting! Yes I know they can have a few niggles - The door wiring is a particularly rubbish design! I would still like a supercharged CL 55 at some point. This car is sold now but it was fun to own. I'd like to have a blast in a CLK55, I bet they are great fun! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed the vid... L :)

    Said for a while these are the bargain of the century and so under rated looks wise. So much so I’ve taken the plunge and bought a Tanzanite blue with pebble beige leather, collect next week, can’t wait. Was holding out for a 600, but the 500 is much better value and there’s much more choice. Nice video, thanks for posting.

      Hi ya yes I have it and love it. I bought a very unloved one tho so between me the Specialist it’s had pretty much everything. I just love the shape and the quality so I wanted one regardless. Now most of the big jobs are done so it’s back to its former glory. It a delight to drive. Spent well in excess of its value now so it’s a keeper to enjoy on nice days 😍

    You just sold me into buying one at insurance auction tonight after my parked '99 CLK 430 was totaled in a police pursuit (very Los Angeles)... Why raise car with ABC you ask? I live in Ukraine and in the winter on the back roads you can have wheel tracks in deep icy snow that you need to follow and raising the car means you don't hit the underside with lumps of ice. Another time I use it is when climbing or parking nose in to a high kerb, to avoid hitting it or scraping up onto it. Kerb heights are very variable here.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Makes perfect sense in that situation! I’ve seen the kind of roads you mean... Luckily we are quite spoilt here in the UK and generally our roads are well maintained.

      @@Auto_Funk Well after scanning for diagnostics, I have no pressure and 2 of the height sensors only work at 1volt, so I initially wondered if the pump was getting current, but knowing that they are common with the steering system that worked perfectly I am puzzled. With a low pressure warning on the ABC module how is the steering still working fine?

    Raising the suspension was a good thing for my old man’s as his drive was quite steep and the approach angle was terrible so using this feature meant it could get up and down the drive 👌🏼 he bought it new in 2003 and has still got it now with only 58k miles on it. She’s a darling!

    Still looks beautiful today, a very clean example. I loves these myself, I almost bought one 4 years ago, go put off by the ABC issue, so I got a 650i instead. Now Iv changed job, had to sell the 650i for a daily dirty diesel. So been thinking about one of these as a summer car. I think they still look classy, comfy and got the power when you need it. If the ABC system fails could always replace it with air bags. They look awesome when they are slammed to the ground.

    • @Auto_Funk
      @Auto_Funk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      They are super cool :) I do like the 6 series as well but the luxury experience is only probably 50/60% of what the CL's offer. ABC is a bit frightening but I guess that is the chance you take. Zero issues on this one so far although it had a new pump a few years ago! BUY ONE!

      Mine is brilliant. 2003 and on a decent run I get 28mpg. Doing 1,000 miles a month with lots of motorway miles keeps everything running smoothly. I change the fluids quite regularly. That alone has greatly improved the gearbox, which instead of a £2,000 rebuild is getting smoother every week. ABC needs proper fluid changes and 'rodeo' calibration via computer.

    Hi! I did an mot history check on ur car, u got a good one, well looked after! I've look at a few and the cheaper 4 grand mark all have fails for tyres and basic cheap stuff!! If they can't afford rubber, they won't be doing general maintenance!!!! Re paint bubbles, alloyoxide! It's the chemical reaction between the 2 metals, classic rangie has this issue also! I so want a cl500! I've had ranger overs, jags, now a wj 4.7 v8 jeep, all v8s, one supercharged jag Daimler! I'm used to the bills, but a merc cl500, u know you're made it in life! Terry Stratford thanks Terry! You’re right, there seems to be many many crappy CL500’s out there. I guess they are cheap enough for people to just buy and then neglect because the maintenance costs can potentially outweigh the value of the car. A huge shame. BUT - good ones are still out there!! This one is sold, but if I was going to buy another I’d go for a CL 55 Kompressor instead. Not that there is anything wrong with a 500 but the AMG cars seem to generally be a bit more cared for on the used market. And I’d imagine the residuals are better too. Buy one!!! @@terrystratford1235 I think you can simply lock up the supercharger pulley with a bit of ingenuity at the pulley end to avoid buying a new clutch. Just means the SC is running all the time so a bit frisky when you pull away if you are clumsy with the throttle. I think that you can also buy an aftermarket, smaller diameter pulley which locks up the clutch as you install it and increases the SC boost at same time.

    They are NOT cheap cars. If you buy one for £7k, reckon on spending this agin in the first year of ownership or 10k miles. they not only prone to suspension problems at £1800 per corner before you fit it, but electrical drains the will leave you stranded. Utter tragedy for a car costing £75k plus when new. Don't bother with them.

      I wish there was an aftermarket kit to hard-pipe the ABC system using 10K psig aircraft-type fittings instead of all the hoses and 5K psig ones used by MB. this car is made for the autobahn but one ABC leak means at these high pressures you gotta get a tow ASAP. that's the real bummer about this vehicle.

    Where can you get one for 3k? I paid like 7.5k and it was in horrible condition.

      Hey Wolfi! Are you based in the UK or Europe? Here in the UK people cannot give them away, they is a very smal market (just a few lucky people :) ) for large V8 coupes here unfortunately.

      What was the condition? I just bought one today with 120k miles.

      I live in Germany. There are plenty of cars available but the ones you can get for 3k are mostly garbage (at least from what I can tell). So I bought one for 7.5k like three months ago which looked like it was well kept and in good condition. I drove it for about two weeks before the first thing broke. After that a lot more broke (windows, valve block, AC, some electronics, soft close etc.) and I sold it just last week for about 2.400,00€ which is just sad.

      Wolfi very sad! Especially since you paid a reasonable price rather than entry level! Would you buy another? I’d be tempted to go with a 55 Komp if I have another CL... :)

      @@Auto_Funk yeah. especially because it is money that is now just gone. I am thinking on maybe getting the C216 in a couple of years. If I don't have the money, I will probably go for a C215 Cl55 or another CL500.

      Potentially but that’s the gamble you take... I think as long as you don’t buy a complete lemon 🍋 you’d be ok 👍🏻

      What you say is true but in my personal opinion it is better than the option of buying a GBP100,000 new luxury car and spending GBP20,000 per year on depreciation. If you want a luxury car then it costs luxury prices to run it but there is no need to suffer the cost of depreciation at the same time. If you want a car with non-luxury running costs then a luxury car may not be the car for you.

      I agree Mark, and there is something quite satisfying about being able to buy a ~ €100000 car for 90%-95% less than the RRP... Even though you do have to accept that some big bills may appear during ownership unless you’re very lucky. Thanks for watching!
