      @@TimsEnthusiastGarage Let´s see:
      1. Number one must off course be the W198
      2. My number two would be the W111 Coupé
      3. Then maybe C215
      4. After that the timeless Pagoda W113
      5. Finally the W114 for its timeless and clean design. This car looks kind of unaged still today.

    I had 4 of these new but mine were all 600’s. I’ve never loved any car more. I’m only 59 and to own just one W215 in my youth, yet to have had four new, it was heaven!!!! I moved on and in 2011-14, I bought four new CL600’s and still own two of them, (all in full designo edition’s). The car was introduced in 99 as a 2000, here in the US. My favorite’s were the 03-06, W215’s and except for little small things, they were all trouble free. I was disgusted by the 2006-10, W216 and fell back in love with the 11-14 and now am on my 2nd S63 AMG 4MC’s all full Designo’s. These cars are so under appreciated! Thanks for the video!

      @@TimsEnthusiastGarage I don’t know where you’re looking for your cars but there hasn’t been a full Designo 11-14 CL for sale on any site, in over a year. The last one I bought was a full Designo CL550 and paid 40k and had to sink another 5k in it to get it up to a point quality car. There are none out there, only black base cars and NO 600’s, at all. There were only 55 built in total for the CL600’s between 11-14. I know because I had a friend who worked for Mercedes in Germany, gave me all the sales figures for the US. I've been looking for a flawless example of the W215 and just missed a full Designo CL55 on BaT. These cars a just hard to find and even harder to find with ultra low miles in the right color combo and in pristine condition. Enjoy yours, it's beautiful!

    I totally agree with you guys. From my point of view the CL (C215) is a future collectible classic car. Currently pretty much underrated. I'm sure this will change due to the specialties of this car like the door hinges, ABC suspension and last but not least, of course, because of the unique design with the 4 eyes and the roof, C pillar and rear window. That's why I bought an V8 Kompressor AMG model (only 4163 vehicles were build) with, probably, an unique DESIGNO interior design. I love this car.
    Thanks for making this video. With guys like you the C215 will become definetly a collectible

      @@TimsEnthusiastGarage actually one more comment to the specialty of a CL C215. Most people don't know the fact that this model was handbuilt in the main Mercedes plant in Sindelfingen, Germany on a separate assembly line. Other than the W/ V 220 S- Class or the R 230 SL which were built in a mass production line. An Indicator for that is the lifecycle production quantity (S-Class 220= 485.000, Sl 230= 170.000, CL C215= 47.000)

    Great cars! But I bet the repairs bills are anything but underrated! Cl 500 I can get a really good one for about £6000! But to replace the whole oil suspension is £12000! From merc! I had v8 ranger over. Jags now jeep, but mercs are more for the elite I think! I wish I had the balls to buy a 2003 CL 500, but if one thing went wrong (and it will) I'd be in dept to fix it! Please prove me wrong, I so want one! Great vid guys!

      Thanks for your comment. We are considering doing a video on swapping the car to coil overs as this has been the biggest question we get in the inbox and many people have wondered if it is possible. This car has had 20k miles put on it with only oil changes. A clip broke in the glove box which was fixed for around 15 dollars. It developed a leak in the soft close door vacuum operation which took about 6 hours and no parts to fix. The car had a new pump when we bought it (I actually did the service) but total investment has been extremely low. Ethan would like it a bit lower and certainly the ABC could represent potential expense where the other systems are pretty renown for being bullet proof. Let us know if that is something you would like to see as a follow up.

      @@TimsEnthusiastGarage hi guys! Yeah coils are easily done, £2000 parts labour and vat @ 20%!! The BIG thing with these mercs is A, don't buy the 1st year of a new generation! 2nd, it's gota have a full service! I understand that so long as the ABC oil and filter services are done, should be another bullet proof area! The oem shock can be reconditioned for about £400 each, but the pump is £2000 plus fitting! I don't know why it bothers me as I own a 19 year old jeep and parts are very expensive due to 2 shipping cost! But I belive in euro car parts! Sometimes better than oem! I'd love a Cl500, what car guy wouldn't! Prices can be shocking, but I guess that's a worst case thing! And to drive a £100k car, probably worth it!!!! 4:29 The main reason for rust on the W220 (or any other mercedes between mid 90's to mid 2000's) is they switched from solvent based paint to water-based paints for environmental reasons. problem was after a few days, germs and bacteria formed in the dipping bath with the varnish which caused micro bubbles between the paint and the chassis. they didn't recognize that for a long time. so if you had a car which was painted on first day with new stuff in the dipping bath you probably were fine. these are mostly the cars which are around till today. if you get a car which was painted after a few days, with the old varnish you could face major rust problems after only 3 or 4 years. these cars are mostly gone.
    they improved the procedure with facelift by changing the varnish in the dipping bath more often, but facelift models tend to rust as well. just not in the insane amount of prefacelift models.
    Another reason are cost cutting measures which lowered the overall build quality by using cheaper materials compared to the previous models (like W140). i also read somewhere they partially used cheap (and minor quality) steel from china or india which also caused rust problems.

    I have just imported my second 215 CL500 from California to Vancouver. First one blew a head gasket which was unfortunate, but they are just so pretty to look at and so perfect to drive, I had to have another. I bagged a 2006 Cubanite silver with pebble beige interior and factory AMG body kit and alloys. It is so important to buy one that has been cared for if you aren’t equipped to do all the work. The difference between my first bottom of the market example and this one are night and day. Previous owner attitude plays such a big part in these, I literally replaced everything on my first, it was all broken and then the HG was blown anyway because they had clearly driven it with a coolant leak :(

    I bought my 2000 CL500 with 45k on the clock two years ago for no money at all. Only issue so far was with the Distronic cruise control, where it would drop out and leave the car stuck in neutral, which was disconcerting on the motorway when you realised you no longer had drive propelling you forward. A system scan identified the problem and then a second hand Distronic ECU off Ebay cured it. The ABC suspension is a great system and works well at disguising the cars weight, and so far has proven to be 100% reliable. Great car and it drives with more involvement than you think possible from such a large luxury car. Totally agree with what you say about the CL being unrated and stunning value for money.

  • @portuguesepetrolhead
    @portuguesepetrolhead 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Interesting to hear the different feel from the different suspension systems. After purchasing my CL 55 K, was immediately surprised by the relatively hard ride - was imagining a magic carpet, whereas in reality it's somewhat firm. Even so, also prefer it to the W220 - the design alone sealed the deal. With cheap units being obliterated at an alarming rate, you can bet well-preserved units will be sought-after classics.

      HA! believe it or not I had never seen him until you mentioned it. Thanks for watching and for taking the time to comment. I’ll be honest, I really, really didn’t like the M5. It was a car that had so many short comings it shouldn’t have made it to market. Most unforgivable is the well known attribute that rarely is there a day when there isn’t some sensor era which sends the car to limp mode. It was one of the most “lemon law’d” car in BMW’s history. Dynamically they aren’t great, the paint work is sub par, the transmission options both manual and SMG are both flawed and feel under developed. It’s just a travesty of a car. The much slower Audi V10 S6 and S8 are better and that is really saying something because they don’t get the recipe right either in terms of being a “must have” performer. Mercedes and Maserati makes more compelling fast sedans. Sorry to be so negative and this is why I will likely never release a video on the E60. Thanks again for watching !!

    • @edwarddogbatse5535
      @edwarddogbatse5535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tim's Enthusiast Garage Yeah I heard really bad things about that SMG gearbox. It’s a car that has been of interest to me for a while cos most reviews about it are to both extremes. Either really bad, like yours or really good. No middle ground whatsoever. The motor interests me a lot too. That BMW S85 engine is “interesting”.
      Anyway, I saw your video on the L322. Also a car that I love. Wanted to ask if you had any cooling issues? Hoses bursting and stuff like that?

    • @TimsEnthusiastGarage
      @TimsEnthusiastGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      edward dogbatse no cooling issues. That truck has had some random electrical issues (plausibly down to a prior aftermarket stereo install) but other than that no mechanical problems. Those are so depreciated it is hard to really fault them. Overall the L322 is a decent design and most engine and trans combos will see you hit big miles without too much expense. The early ones do seem to need a bit more corrective maintenance than later ones but they are all exceptional buys. E60 engine has some serious design flaws. The bottom end bearings fail pretty quickly and the throttle actuators also fail even after having been replaced. It is pretty fragile.

    Bought a CL55 AMG last year with 220.000km. Had no problems so far and it is a gorgeous and all around a perfect car. The looks you get when driving in one of these (especially as a younger driver) is insane. I have a beautiful pristine designo interior in charcoal & beige and the classic 744 silver on the outside. Full spec and everything still works. Matter of fact I love it so much I can’t justify bringing it out the garage in the cruel European winter. Looking at buying a cheap beater prefacelift 500 just so I can daily one of these beauties without worry killing me while driving it. If u want one buy one now. In Europe the prices are already rising slowly but steadily and good examples are gone fast. These are getting the attention they deserve again and most people I know that have one aren’t planning on parting from them anytime soon. Lastly, pay most attention to ABC and keep in mind most repairs are not impossible to do yourself in contrary to what people falsly claim.

      @lethalhype1931 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@buyiphilip well you have to ask yourself how much practicability and utility you want out the car. Both are absolute clean cars the CL a bit more elegant and luxury in my eyes. If you want the more reliable one out of the two with less features to go wrong or break get the E55. But watch out for SBC brake problems on these. I honestly would get a CL 55 because it just is a beautiful timeless coupe. Also if you’re in your early 20s like me then a coupe is fine we don’t need the utility of 4 Doors as much as we might do later with family and kids and all. I didn’t have any issues with my ABC so far and have the car for two years now however previous owner gave it a new strut, pump and a system flush. When the ABC works It really is a fantastic ride quality. I would get a CL, wait till the ABC breaks then go for an adjustable coilover suspension that’s probably the most economical compromise while still maintaining the coolness factor of an S Coupe. If you just want raw AMG sporty feel and less issues but also a bit less of a special appearance go for the E55. If you have more questions don’t hesitate man I’d be more than glad to answer! Marco Cerqueira for me the CL55 is the absolute best one they made. The facelift car with the supercharged V8 offers huge performance and reliability. A friend had a 65 and had some big bills. For me that little extra performance and weight isn’t worth it. That said, it is the rarest and will certainly be worth more some day. Thanks for watching. Please subscribe!

      I’ve had a Designo S600 for the better part of a decade, and in that time I’ve really had no V12 specific problems. Imo if you’re gonna have a C215 and deal with ABC anyways, it’s worth the additional marginal cost to have a V12 car.

      As the owner of nearly 30 cars of all brands it kills me when enthusiasts want to say things to discourage young enthusiasts. He was 16 and picked it himself. It is an AMG pack car from the factory. Mercedes chose to make AMG a styling package with wheels stamped as such. I appreciate you watching but 🤷🏼‍♂️ the sentiment is passé. If it helps now that he is older and wiser he decided to change the number plate on his own. Cheers!

It still drives better than any lexus(except sport models) ever will. I went with yellow speed coilovers. It was on black friday sale at $1060 shipped. I really appreciate you sharing your feedback. If you haven’t already please sub the channel as I will be doing a review on the conversion when and if it happens. First off, thanks so much for watching. it is important to remember that ALL CL a very rare. The facelift cl500 with AMG package will always be desirable as it is the most reliable and still a great performer. Second, I would say that the CL55 is going to be “the one” . It is a serious performer, was the F1 safety car and power to weight wise is optimal . Then there is the non US market cl63. Very rare . The CL65 will be valuable. I actually think the 500 will be more collectible than the 600 as many people are scared of the reliability. Hope that helps. Cheers!
