The only thing that is appearing to stop you from enlightenment/self-realization/eternal life/knowing yourself to be unconditional love is identification with thoughts, emotions, sensations, perceptions and experiences instead of being aware of being aware and knowing yourself to be that unconditional love pure consciousness in which all thoughts, emotions, sensations, perceptions and experiences appear but are not inherently one with you; they are an expression of unconditional love; you are that infinite that is expressing itself as suffering/pleasure but inherently you are neither; you are that nothing/unconditional love/pure consciousness in which they are appear and by which they are perceived;
Suffering/pleasure comes and goes; there is an awareness that is aware of them coming and going; that you are; remember and know what you are; never identify with anything that is appearing within you; since it appears within you; it can't be you; you are that in which it appears. When you abide as that in which it appears instead of identifying; nothing has a grip on you; if anything comes; it quickly goes; like clouds passing; only if you identify as a cloud then it will appear as if the cloud is here for longer than it is originally supposed to; if you simply rest as the awareness and do not identify; it will quickly dissolve; be unconditional love by being aware of being aware; this is the highest; this is what you are seeking in absolutely everything else; you are seeking yourself; you are seeking unconditional love; but you are looking outside of yourself; instead of being aware that you already are unconditional love. If you've been programmed you are not enough to be loved from childhood, then you get lost in longing for love by searching it in others. Until you realize that love is within you even if you are taught different. Don't look for you in the eyes of others.

Don’t look for you in the eyes of others...that is absolutely profound and stopped me in my tracks. This teaching from Eckhart and your phrase really was a moment of pure consciousness for me.
People go searching for it (unconsciously) in achievements also, to fill the void of lack.
It took me almost 40 years to learn this, after being raised by a narcissist.
When I feel thirsty and look for some water, only people like Eckhart can quench my thirst..

Relationships are on the level of the physical, emotional and mental. Who you truly are is beyond all these. Enjoy relationships but don't seek you happiness in them 🙏🏽

Hi it's Annie thank you Eckhart this is a very good talk. I have been celibate for almost 15yrs as I could not find honesty and faithfulness from a partner always had been with some one who could not be faithful and that has always been important to me in a relationship. We feel closer to God as you say when we stop looking for some one out there.

A good friend can be so helpful with spiritual growth! A spouse can be helpful as well, as long as the spouse is not being used to augment one's form. Hollywood kinda does a mind-f in this regard, IMHO..

Good point. Yet most relationships are somewhat dysfunctional. It does not have to be that way. When you're aware together true love can blossom.

I am my true whole self, I am already complete. I do not long for another. I do converse in social settings, I enjoy my own company. If I should connect with another whole being that would be wonderful, if not then I still have my true whole self. Love comes from within, not from another. No one can complete you, as you are already complete. look within yourself for answers. If you do not LOVE your true self, you cannot give to another what you do not already have from within. Just my thoughts.

Happy is the person who's @ home w/ himself. The pair-bonding trend is peddled to us thru marketing/media, anyhow.
Most people simply cannot be alone. Social stigma also plays a role. I love Eckhart's philosophy on relationships. It's not one I expect you'd hear from on-line dating agencies, though!

This is life saving. I’m 74 I have had horrible going wrong relationships that destroyed me. After 30 years single I’ve come across ET talking and he actually answered what was happening.
This is true what he says here. I know it is. Lately I am experiencing beautiful nothingness, seeing life as it is, and then bum I suffer, becase I use to love some guy who treated me really bad and this is very hard for me to understand how can someone be so cruel and I think about traumatic past over and over again and I cannot free myself. I wish I could forget all this and him. This is such a waste of my youth. Bad relationship are wasting in us incredible gift that life is. They bring only death and sorrow. On the other hand, if I wouldn't suffer so much in my life, I could not appreciate so much silence, being alive, seeing life.

It's not about being single or in relationship , it's not about being rich or not rich , it's not about being successful or unknown .
It's just about not seeking happiness in any of those things , which implies that without anything you are not happy . Lack is state of mind not reality , see how huge need becomes to escape nothingness to escape doing nothing having nothing being nothing.
Being nothing doing nothing is simplest thing in world but there is so much resistance towards it , obviously nothing will happen if we are nothing yet we so scared of that . Real question is why ?
