- Here we see GWR 60xx, 6024 King Edward I storm through Didcot Parkway, twice! She put on a great performance on the outward journey with her whistling all the way through the platform, with the pannier in the DRC joining in! On the way back she was also absolutely bombing it and she put on a great show for us again! I absolutely enjoyed the show she put on and I look forward to her back on the mainline!
Thanks Everyone who got this video to 1,000 views! It means a lot, if you want to see more videos like this and more, subscribe and I'll try even harder to bring you the best steam videos from the GWML! :)
Edit 11/01/2013 Thanks to everyone who has now got this video to over 10,000 views, I'm honoured that so many people would watch my video, thank you very much!
Watch the bloke with the little lad as the last coach passes on the first run. That's me and my son who there by coincidence. He had asked to watch some trains - we got more than we bargained for!! I have never seen a steam engine doing more than 25mph before. To sit down at that level just behind the yellow line was incredible. We were there for some HST's too - and what is noticeable is the hammerblow effect of the steamer. Many thanks for capturing this great memory.
thompo999 You Sir.... are a top dad!
Judging by the smoke, she was giving it her best shot on the second run. What a joy to behold. Thank you for a heart-warming video.
What's the matter with me, I'm not even a big rail buff but my eyes welled up with tears watching that dramatic video it was the whistle that did it..:)
As kids, my young brother and in were in awe of the GWR big 'uns. Further more, going to St. Ives every year for our holidays was a engine spotter's dream - Paddinton, Reading, Exeter, Newton Abbott (a double header for the Devon Banks to Plymouth), Plymouth, Truro. Change at St. Erth God's for one of the most beautiful branch linse in the country for the run into St Ives. God's Wonderful Railway.
I can remember seeing scenes like this EVERY DAY on the outskirts of Birmingham in the 30s 40s and 50s it still sends shivers down my spine!
That's wonderful to hear!
That whistle !! Imagine it on a rainy winters night , it would scare the bejabbers out of you. Brilliant !
Bristolian inward bound at 17;30 hrs my house was 150 yards from "the bridge" I used to go and stand on to watch her pass by South Moreton, just past Moreton Cutting, I also worked on this station (Didcot) as letter boy at 15 waiting to be 15 and a half to enter the railway workshops to start my apprenticship, Didcot/Reading/Swindon and finally OOC, lost count on how many times I saw the Bristolian, also have to thank "King Edward I" for doubling my money, mysteriously made my half pennies turn into full blown pennies that worked for a while on the chewing gum machines in South Moreton shop.
That first whistle is like the longest I've heard off a GWR Loco. Awesome stuff!! Must see a steam loco there full speed sometime
I counted 13 coaches, such a marvelous sight to see.
Pure GWR Swindon Home Of The Very Best More Than A Match For Any Pacific LMS LNER OR Sourthern Built
Thank you for watching, this has to be my favourite set of clips of all time, even with Mr "I Love Chocolate". The sound and sights of this mighty locomotive pelting through are just magical. Happy New Year to you :)
WHAT A SIGHT! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT!
What a whistle! What an engine! Two superb shots! Steve
Thank you for your kind comment, as for your question, I think the InterCity coach was the buffet and blue coach was the generator for the lighting and heating :)
Thanks again
Andy
Two epic performances Andy, loved all the whistling on the first one, thumbs up & fav'd
What an awesome video, that long whistle made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.., stunning.😍😍😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍
Two things that get me ready for my day, first is this video followed up with Yuja Wang playing Prokofiev Toccata with a few cups of coffee !!
Another dynamic performance by KE1 both ways at Didcot. Spine-chilling. Barry
The King still reigns gives me goose bumps watching this beautiful Loco
Me also was always a thrill to watch the Bristolian pass by.
Bloody hell. Looks like steam is still on the roster!!
I too used to 'train spot' the steam locos at Didcot station, probably about the same age as well. I also admit to trying to throw conkers down the chimney's from over vauxhall bridge. I went on to work on the footplate at Reading but on Diesels unfortunately. As you say, the experience of being on the platform when they thundered through was something that diesels could never never match.
Reminds me of being taken 'train spotting' at Didcot when I was about 5 or 6; express passenger trains were much rarer then, and I think most of the trains were slow passenger together with a lot of freight; however 'an express' which could very well have been hauled by a King, shot through, to our great excitement (and not getting the number!). I've never really got the hang of train spotting tbh...
My first Horby 00 train set was 'The Bristolian' but it had a Castle loco! Grandad drove Steam including Kings and Aunties and Uncles worked on stations and 'boxes. Born in Oxford and did my apprenticeship in Swindon (partly at the Works) and used to catch the milk train from Swindon to Oxford after Night School Friday nights... Happy Days ..
Where you at the apprentice training school in 1963 during the very cold winter, when they sent us all home ??
@@sadelsor '63 was the year I joined the RMCS Shrivenham where I was actually trained. We did a day a fortnight at the Works for the heavier engineering. I trained as a Jig & Tololmaker and knew a lot of the BR Apprentices from Day Release and Night School at Swindon Tech College but I started in the Summer of '63 after O Levels. But that '62 / '63 Winter was bloody cold.
@@1chish I was at the Apprentice Training School, was in the first batch 1963, finished up at OOC London, left in 1967 to join P&O Arcadia, spent 2 years there then went to Aussie to live, went to Bougainville Island and from there delivered a supply vessel to Panama, travel up to Canada, worked in BC, went to Calgary and got hired for oil rig work living in Singapore, rig was in Indonesia, great days when a tradesman could just pack his toothbrush and travel anywhere, those apprenticeship papers with "Swindon Trained" stamped across the top was all you needed alongside a British passport, opened a lot of doors for a young lad.
@@sadelsor Coincidence here. I left after 3 years with my C & G Technician tickets and worked as a musician on Chandris Lines cruises (SS Ellinis etc). One guy I worked with eventually went to Australia on the £10 one way ticket and is still there. Sadly the unions had started destroying industry so I just did other things.
One guy I knew who was at Swindon Apprentice School was older than me and he was brilliant at his job. He taught at the School for a few years and then went on to become an engineering lecturer in Yeovil.
Love that whistle on the first shot..... important trains like that must stamp their authority as they pass lesser wayside stations..... seriously, great shot and look forward to seeing 6024 again in the not too distant future.

@thompo999 Awesome, I'm glad more young people are getting interested in trains(not saying I'm old by any means, being a teenager and all). You defiantly picked the right day to come and watch the trains. Steam at full speed beats everything hands down, in my opinion. If the electrification goes ahead, they'll become a rare thing through Didcot, So I would get out to see them more often. Thanks for watching. Andy
As a child of this day and age I feel rather 'ripped off' all we get these days are diesels that aren't very exciting at all, I wish I could have been at Didcot back in the days of steam, watching the Kings and Castles rocketing through, I'm just glad I could record footage like this in the 21st Century, just a little reminder of a bygone age. Thank you for sharing your memories.
Andy
love the cooling tower in the background as well
GWR23 Studios it's not theatre at all anymore mate, got knocked down about a year ago, it changes the look of our railway centre quite a bit though
GWRfan3717 it is inevitable, there all going these days, but steam is still going
now that is what you call speed and power
Wow! Just wow!
Just makes me smile.
Superb display AND video, well done! Ken
February 2024 and it's still not old.
Remember when they put the "Warships" on the Bristolian, was never the same !!
No, it was faster with the warships, 😁
makes all the hairs on my neck stand on end.
brilliant
Imagine if he had a Santa Fe 6 chime…that would be something else. And it actually suits an engine his size.
Just Great to see a GWR Loco all power.
Had the best locomotive designers at Swindon, it was a "Mecca" there in the Brunel days, men were men and those Swindon girls loved it, terrible beer there in those days, had not improved last time I was there.
@KINGANDCASTLE Ah okay :) Thanks for watching by the way :D
The i love chocolate, man 😂😂😂
The power!!
Superb!
Quite right, even when on shed, they look very impressive, especially when put next to a diesel
Makes me very proud to have had all my relatives (mothers side) who 'Worked on the inside' ( Swindon Works). I worked for GW myself, but not I hate to admit, the real GWR, no the bunch who took on the name, but are no more than bus operators !
She sure can shift!
Doing 20mph. The film speed was adjusted.
@bkendlerA4 Thanks Barry, It was great to witness first hand, the crew had an air of 'last run' upon them. They certainly put on a good show for us all. Andy.
0:48 I love chocolate too !
@HughFromAlice Defiantly the best whistle I've ever seen out of her! She there was no stopping her, she pulled out all the stops on her last mainline run, cheers for watching. Andy.
Nice to see a Guest appearance from David Tennnent at 0:50
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh🔜🔜🔜🔜🔜🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed the video :)
Andy.
@jakeh4953 Cheers, she defiantly was brilliant! No problem :)
Amazing
I have this feeling of deja vue
A King class at full cry gives me goosebumps
and not assisted by a diesel excellent 👌
Awesome....
She's back in blue now!
That's 6023, 6024 is still in overhaul at the west Somerset railway
It's an old Monty Python joke from years ago, I won't bore you with the details.
@0740Woodside Thanks mate :) They really were some great whistles :D
I know!! Thanks for watching :)
2 fantastic shots, well done, liked and faved. Cheers for the comment on my vid too :)
It's a pity that in the steam heritage runs in India they don't use the period coaches. They were quite different from the ones that are in use now.
Now that’s what a proper train should look and sound like.
@letmadnessbegin Cheers, she defiantly pulled out all the stops today :D
The shame is that we never get to see what steam loco's can really do! 90 on the flat with 12 on is quite possible with 8's and maybe 7's too.
Angry Welshman Productions uses this sound in his intro.
First time u see her that's angrywelshman production's intro track
@andyg3 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it :D
Thank you! There were many many other words going through my mind at the time I can tell you, at least he actually got out of the way.
Ooo thank you very much :D
Outstanding. Thanks!!! Why the random coaches? There was a HST liveried coach in the middle and the blue coach at the end. Buffet car and brake van perhaps? Just seemed an odd combination. Great footage though :-)
Guess the carriage shunter was colour blind !!
@Rabbitbunvoo I saw :) Cheers for watching :D
@TheTrainBoy43034 Seen it mate, it was a crackin shot :D Cheers for watching will :)
nice to see the absence of an angstloco on the back.
So this is where AWPs old intro is from......
methinks that kettle is boiling
never mind we will now have KE1 to take over from KE2
Strewth ... !!
0:35 Why are those 2 spectators on the left hiding behind the bushes?
Father and son, its explained somewhere on this page.
The King was awesome. The chocolate boy a complete knobhead!
How Rude! He's probably a legitimate passenger waiting for a train. Also, he's about 25 yards from the camera. Why not try being more tolerant of others who don't share your interests?
That's angry Welshmens intro
@hurleyfunbags Thanks :D
Chocolate boy looks the type to be making you a morning coffee in an Italian capachino joint in Soho square !!
Is there anything wrong with working in a coffee shop? Lots of people do, and my observation is that in many cases they work bloody hard! Try being more tolerant of others.
@KINGANDCASTLE what do you mean?
13 on, all in weight including maybe 400 passengers 600 tons.
Train about 460 tons, engine and tender about 138, total nearly 600 tons.
Couldn't be further from the truth! I always think that Steam engines look a lot more impressive at speed than diesels and electrics too.
surely it is "belts " ??
Rentboy comes to mind...
How Rude, going on gratuitously offensive! He's probably a legitimate passenger waiting for a train. Also, he's about 25 yards from the camera. Why not try being more tolerant of others who don't share your interests?
Ok good
Havnt you ever heard of panning!
You comment on a 12 year old video to ask if I’ve ever heard of panning? Have a word with yourself.
Wow, how beautiful was that, a great pity about chocolate muppet how irritating for you, great piece of film, thank you.
I didn't like the way that guy was eyeballin' me.
ok vidio
Still think Mr Chocolate should have been on the Poxford Branch Platform..Prat.extrordinaire..! College type..
How Rude! He's probably a legitimate passenger waiting for a train. Also, he's about 25 yards from the camera. Why not try being more tolerant of others who don't share your interests?
He was a complete and utter arse, he could see I was trying to film it, before I started the video, I moved the camera because he was already in the way and he just moved again... pointless, I wasn't very happy..
How Rude! He's probably a legitimate passenger waiting for a train. Also, he's about 25 yards from the camera. Why not try being more tolerant of others who don't share your interests?
Yeah, this isn't the first time I've had someone like that, utter twats.
He was a guy, a very camp guy by the looks of things though..
-and did he like cream with his chocolate?
エキセン被っててワロタ
the Castle 5043 was much better
For what may I ask ??
Cheap and nasty Polish coal. Too much smoke
I have this feeling of deja vue
