Gosh, this took me back! As a child I often travelled on this train, The Talisman and my favourite the lovely blue Mallard. Today we love these old locomotives, but then we used to moan about not being able to slide apart the windows for fear of smuts descending on our clothes! They are so majestic and I remember the frisson of excitement when one rolled into Darlington Station. Going to London when I was a child was like going on safari to Africa! Thank you, so enjoyed it and the memories it bought back.

I am 82 and as a boy used to go train spotting at Doncaster station. Those express steam trains didn't stop at Doncaster but went through the station like a whirlwind filling the platform with a smell of steam and grease. It was a thrilling experience.

I thought I could hear the sound of a Westinghouse pump. I assume A4s didn't have one originally (being vacuum braked). Where on the loco is the Westinghouse pump fitted?

I'm just a girlie-girl and not an experienced rail buff, so I can't make any telling technical observations about the sounds, the brakes, the rate of acceleration, the track, the points, the gradient, the number/type of carriages, the route, or whether the driver is (obviously!!!!!) wearing Grade 1 or Grade 2 gloves [you can tell by the way the thingy does the wotsit], so I'll just say this: I love steam locomotives (See? I'm trying - I didn't say 'trains'🤭), and very much appreciate this fine video.
Thank you for being there and taking us all with you.🙂

The number of times I've seen these A4s leave Kings Cross. I used to live a two minute walk away and spent many an hour watching these things leave from platform 10 in the fifties. I even got a lift up the platform on the footplate from a friendly driver after the train pulled out. So glad to see the enthusiasm here for them.

Hi from Green Bay Wisconsin U.S.A, and the Famous National Railroad Museum, where we have our A4 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower since 1964. But since 2001 trapped inside the Fuller Exhibit Hall. Yet in 2012 it was pulled out by sheer force of will power, and returned to York and your National Railway Museum, for "THE GRAND GATHERING " with the Reunion of the 6 remaining A4 GRESLEY STREAMLINERS for the 75th Anniversary of The World 🌎 Speed Record of "MALLARD", and numerous excursions. There are many videos on Y.T. that give me an idea 💡 as to Why these A4 locos were, and are, SO SPECTACULAR!!!!! And thanks to the New King Charles for sponsoring this A4 project back in 2013 when He was The Prince 🤴. GOD BLESS THE KING 🤴 🙏 🙌 ❤ 👏 AMEN!!!!! GLORY ALLELUIA!!!!! //: P.S. Now it is Sunday, May 28, 2023A.D., Pentecost; and the morning switcher engine just passed by going East to Bellevue, WISC., for the Canadian National Railroad, and using the Original C&NW, Chicago and North-Western RR tracks, that C.N. merged into, in 2003., thus now is the 20th Anniversary of this merger. However, the first C&NW RR went further East, from Manitowoc, and Turning South to Sheboygan, and Milwaukee. But in 1987 that track was also split between the UNION PACIFIC merger in Milwaukee. And the new Regional shortline called the "FOX RIVER VALLEY RR", F.R.V.R. But also later in 1996 it was then controlled by the next new rr called the "WISCONSIN CENTRAL LIMITED, WCL., who decided to abandon, and rip off this valuable track between Rockdale and Denmark. Yet sadly, we the railfans had plans to make this into a new excursion, and including the evening Dinner train that might have had Wisconsins farm fresh food and dairy products. Also in the winter we might have had a Special long excursion for the. N.F.L. football fans of OUR GREEN BAY PACKERS!!!!!, And go South to meet the Chicago Bears 🐻 🐻‍❄, and our long time rivalry since 1919. Happily, another route is available, in addition to some of the 1956 Original Bilevel coaches, and Diesel Streamliners like E.M.D. Large E8A, and also the F7a, from the Famous Fleet of the C&NW "400"!!

But, sadly static at York railway museum but, sadly not in many, many years & i have sadly never had the great pleasure to see either of these AWESOME locomotives ready to stretch their legs ( as they say) due to the extreme high cost to maintain them & run them on a railway line of 60+ miles could be a lot more ( sadly i really don't know ) But, i would very much love to see Flying Scotman ( mainly) steamed up!ready to go on it's journey. But, sadly it is always on a route i can never get within X amount of miles to see it So, i just watch it on TH-cam uploaded by someone else. 😟😟😟😟

I look at this beautiful beast and remember my days as an engine cleaner back in Crewe south sheds in 1967 56 years ago😱…This loco was preserved there at the time and it was our job to clean it , luckily for us it didn’t go out too often so was easily cleaned compared to a working black five…Crewe south was still operational even though officially it closed in 1967 but was on a much reduced basis and steam locos were still running until late 68 or early 69 …I remember the owner of the Sir Nigel Gresley always coming to the sheds I think it was David Bailey 🤔 but a photographer for sure, he was always taking professional photos and another day the husband of Princess Margaret came as a guest of the owner and a really nice man …I then went on to the footplate are passing out as a fireman, but in reality my group of engine cleaners then fireman were the last to work on steam because there were very few steam sheds left open at that stage…

My favourite part was the whistle blowing. He long since a steam engine whistle was heard at Kings Cross?

@@trainsplanesBecause It's so rare, especially from a A4 with it's unique duel tone, they really should have treeted the enthusiasts to a longer thrill.

How does this work with the rear loco? Does the driver call to the back if he needs assistance? I heard it was compulsory for mainline steam to have a diesel at the back now? Going London to Edinburgh in November on SNG and D9000 can’t wait!

    • @scudosmyth784

The steam at the start is to clear the cylinders then it flows backward when the speed picks up.

Is the diesel engine on the rear doing any work, or is it just coasting, there in case of breakdowns?

The A4s are such an iconic, beautiful loco......
Rode on No.9 out of The Cross in 1994.....to Peterborough.....
Gresleys design is just a work of Art.
The Wartime Black livery suits it so well.....but Garter Blue is my fave

HNG in wartime back paint - magnificent. A thoroughbred among the carthorses and a stinking old diesel on the back ! I remember the days when the Gresley engines did their usual 'running-on-the-spot' act when entering gasworks tunnel !

How many times I stood at the end of platform 10 seeing all this in the late 50,s early 60,s watching this makes me think I can almost not just hear and see but literally smell that mixture of steam ,smoke and hot oil ,was always a sight what loco reversed down from top shed shalthough the station loco coaling and watering facilities were also very busy ,34A loco depot was a nightmare to get into ,invariably shed staff or foremen chased you ,only time I got into it was when it had closed in June 1963 ,we were up at New Southgate the week before and there was still plenty of steam activity A4/3/2/1 V2/WD/9F although the rein of the Brits shedded at Immingham m had finished ,Ah !Nostalgia,

Me too! Actually that departure wasn't as spectacular as the regular displays of wheelspin from those beautiful Pacifics I saw back then. I got round Top Shed just the once, all other attempts thwarted.
