For those who don't know in the subreddit the mod said that the awards will be in the middle of may because the boys are on vacation and this ep is prerecorded
Joey pointed out things on what makes a manga or anime compelling, and this guy just says vibe. He discuss about art and then when asked what's an art, he can't even explain what an art is, even on his own standards. This casual should not be in this panel.
@@knaveofsouls6080honestly as an artist, i agree with connor it doesnt really have to mean anything, its your view of the art, when i create "art" i dont really think about what it means, its just how i feel about something.
The talk about what a vibe is and art without humans has to be simultaneously the most insightful and most frustrating conversation I have ever listened to involving these guys.
They just didn't have the right vocabulary to convey what they were trying to say, "vibes" based mood pieces are a very normal and respected style in plenty of mediums.
@@TheIceman101418 Connor is just one of those people who doesn't like to think. I don't mean that as an insult, but that's a pretty consistent thing with him. He knows when he likes the thing or doesn't like the thing, but he doesn't care enough to think about why. For example: he infamously said music is just noise despite clearly enjoying music. He's just using the word "Vibe" because he doesn't know how to articulate his feelings. It's basically the same as if someone asked him why he liked something and he responded with "I just do."
@@Sharkofspace I disagree. He is very smart and articulate and I'm sure he'd find a way to articulate his thoughts if he felt the need. The entire point of his argument is that reasoning out what makes a story good is not neccesary. What matters is what emotions/atmosphere/vibe are evoked, not pedantics about plot, story, themes etc.(these terms are very inconsistent every time they're used). In the end of the day all these concepts serve to describe the emotions art creates in us, at least in mine and prob connors view, which btw is not a simplistic view and indeed corresponds to one of the core beliefs of existentialism(existence before essence). I would say he is trying not to be overly pedantic about art, because thats what art truly is to him. He would be in great company , since most artists think intuitively about art as opposed to how academics and critics view art. That makes sense since out of the 3 he is most concerned with creative pursuits (garnt and joey are primarily critics). His view is completely valid and in no way inferior to a more analytic view of art.
@@martindang7333 I agree with this. Joey and Garnt's points are that you can pinpoint a specific factor of the art style or the plot or the music that quantifies the vibe. But Connor's point is that it doesn't boil down to any one of those factors, it's your initial gut reaction to the work (the vibe) that quantifies your experience. The whole is not the sum of its parts.
@@blank9789 Connor isnt hard to understand, because his definition of anything is all surface level in its raw form. If a person cannot explain what they like about the anime, they will just think "I just vibe with it". But in reality, there is of course a reason, any reason that makes you vibe with a medium. Exactly why connor refers to music as beeps and boops. He's actually the definition of monke and doesnt really think deeper on topics like this.
@@srutoIIRC, they have mentioned in previous episodes that youtube thoroughly checks first 15-20 minutes for obscene/curse words, so they try to tone down their british/australian sides for that time period
I love listening to these idiots just waffling. Feels like a night out with your lads when no one makes any sense. Super grateful for this podcast, I can't say I've ever stumbled upon other content creators who capture this feeling as well :)
The mistake conor made with the "vibe" explanation is that he kept switching back and forth from it being a subjective thing to an objective thing. That's why Joey and Garnt were confused.
I agree with this. Like when he said One Piece didn’t have a vibe. I wouldn’t consider it a series with strong vibes, which is what I think he was trying to say when he said its main strength was its story and world-building, it definitely has some vibes. I’d argue its vibe is the wacky humor. But anyway, I think if he had just said he didn’t really enjoy One Piece for its vibes that he would not confused them.
@@Mellow_Yellow13 He said the vibe because he got One Piece Video, so he need to keep hype it up LOL Connor can just cancel reading One Piece just like Joey did if he did not enjoy it
also because he kept saying The Vibe, as if its a single unchanging entity that requires a proper noun. If he said "an individual story's vibes" I think everyone would understand what he means.
I agree. On a side I agree with him on things like they can't be quantified etc, on the other side I'm with them: he's way too much doublestandard in determining what vibes are and if there are or not. In that way one can use the term for everything and nothing :| Like: I agree with that thing about every panel in Berserk having powerful vibes, but "vibes" aren't some esoteric power, they aren't there cause the page has midichlorians or the ink was made by some mysterious isotope that emanates "vvvvvibes". The vibes are conveyed through the masterful way Miura used composition, lineart, portrayal of motion, design, etc. They aren't thing that can be quantified in numbers, but they are thing you can determine and analyze, they aren't some nebulous "VVVVVVIIIIBEEEES!" xD
@hysteriaval that's literally what they did lmao every counter point they laid out against him was everything he already said or agreed with and yet they still said he was wrong 😂 like they wanted to argue for no reason. He was basically saying everyone has their own personal vibe on a subject that may affect their way of thinking
When Connor's talking about "vibe", he seems to be talking about a work's tone or atmosphere and the art style that provides that. For the "art" description, me and my art professor discussed about it. "Art" is a human-made creative expression through a medium. It's why scenery or objects that are naturally created by nature rather than humans don't count as art just because it looks "beautiful".
Strictly speaking, I think he means vibe as in, his emotional connection to a piece of work. Although, it's definitely different from how you would use the word in "good vibes" and "bad vibes", which is more about tone I think. To Connor's point, there doesn't seem to be a single definition of "vibe".
@@_ch1pset Emotional connection can also be due to the tone/atmosphere. If that's the case, then Connor's meaning of "vibes" would be too vague. Even people are arguing about what he meant.
@@_ch1pset very simple: Berserk vibes: lonely formidable warrior guts companionship of puck and his antics creepy souls and demons dark and gloomy weather (often) even if a Berserk episode was super slice of life and fillerish, you would be able to enjoy it because it has set such an immersive atomsphere. And this is what he meant when he was pointing to a random Berserk panel, it's pure unique vibes at play. Meanwhile people literally make episode lists of skippable OP filler cuz its boring lol. You can't watch OP without at least a mini story(episodic) or some small advancement in the over arching story.
@@_ch1pset You cannot define what makes something a vibe, because it is subjective. But vibe is using human instinct and gut feeling to describe something, and that gut feeling of what makes something look good or feels good to you does have a basis behind it.
Listening to a discussion about "vibe" devolving [evolving?] into a metaphysical discussion about the relation of the human mind to reality is a peak moment.
Takehiko Inoue is the GOAT. 49:24 to correct Joey, Real came out AFTER Vagabond started releasing so its actually the other way around. Inoue took a hiatus from writing Vagabond to write Real instead. Inoue has this sense of responsibility in maintaining an impossible perfectionist standard in regards to Vagabond so he writes Real as a break from his burnout working on Vagabond. Also it's not in "permanant hiatus". Real's latest chapter was released this February.
@@LoveYourself-318Nah fr. This guys standard is crazy. I remember there was a documentary of him working on a chapter of Vagabond behind the scenes and despite it releasing as a 10/10 chapter he was very unhappy with it. So much so he slammed his manuscript on the ground.
Inoue definitely is a perfectionist when it comes to his work but I don’t mind it since it’s his passion that keeps him going and not monetary value in selling his work which I really despise when it comes to artists and creators.
42 mins in but this has been an one of the funniest eps i've watched period. Garnt drinking weeks old water after almost moving on from the vibes conversation (instant classic) just destroyed me
Wake up babe new trash taste episode just dropped Also, for those who are not on reddit, they decided to delay the annual trash taste awardw because the bois have been busy. So look forward to that in a few weeks!
More in details, cuz the boys have been super busy with the Cyclethon, and they’re going to be in Australia for Dreamhack at the end of the month, so with all the travel they’re doing they didn't have enough time to get everything setup according to Alex in sub pinned post
I actually liked that discussion about the art and vibe. Yeah its gonna open up a big worm hole. But that's what trash taste it about. A tangent which leads to the darkest time line or a talk about completely different topic than you ever imagined. Kinda like drawing yourself a dream car and ending up a nuclear missile rocket with infinite food glitch.
"Vibe" is a noun that describes a distinctive feeling or quality that can be sensed. It can also refer to the character, quality, or atmosphere of a place or situation. here ya go meaning for vibe
Started rewatching the oldest trash taste episodes and have been watching since they originally came out. It’s weird seeing them change so little yet so much hard to describe it’s like their vibe has evolved a little.
When I was in year 12 my art teacher said that if we ever used the word vibe when trying to describe a piece of art she would throw us out of the classroom because it is a nonsense word with no tangible meaning and I feel like that is very relevant here.
@@WieldMyWordIt's a slang... And how is it uneducated when it literally describes what you said perfectly? A "vibe" is the felling you get from the way that all the elements of the piece work together to form a product greater than the sum of it's parts. I understand if that teacher just didn't like the word for whatever reason because the generation before never likes the slang of the generation that comes after but to say that "vibe" makes no sense or is an "uneducated" way of saying something is just wrong in my opinion. The word "cool" is an uneducated way to describe something you like and think is interesting and exiting, and also, it makes no sense since the thing you are referring too is not cold. Language changes and evolves over time, abbreviations and expressions are a natural product of that.
Land of the Lustruous (Houseki no Kuni) deserves a lot more rep. Deserves to be on this list for sure. Shame none of the boys have read it. It's something that Garnt would definitely make a video on.
a lot of manga deserve a lot more rep tbh , stories like hnk , usogui , pandora hearts aren't very popular despite the fact that they have amazing writing

52:57 Umineko is easily one of the best stories out there and is incredibly overlooked outside of the visual novel reader community. The manga adaptation is amazing too, which is why it’s rated highly. Extremely powerful and emotional journey, highly recommended for anyone who loves a good mystery.
I am still a very big user of MAL. Have been for more than 14 years now. At first (when I was younger) I was actually active on the forums and clubs, but for the past 10 years I have just mostly been using it to track and discover shows. I think a lot of people tend to be like that as well.
Mal was godlike back then to track animes that I was watching between pirate sites and apps 🙏🙏🙏 even nowadays I still use It to track the longer mangas that I read
Them being surprised stuff like Horimiya or Pandora Hearts were popular really tells you that they only started reading manga in recent years. When I was getting into reading manga back in the early 2010s, these were the manga that were recommended to me from looking up manga recommendations so its not really that surprising that they have a lot of members on MAL.
that's exactly how i felt abt them getting surprised over ao haru ride😭 (shoutout to joey for reading the shoujo classics and connor mentioning the female lead thing)
Joey has been reading manga since childhood so I don't think that's why. Popularity of certain things change and so people just forget really, that and these just might not be the stuff they're interested in.
@@ardrensc6630 I know he has. However these manga were popular at one point for people getting into reading manga in the West. Joey reading manga since childhood doesn't mean he knows what people found popular at the time.
@@ardrensc6630 It definitely still has to do with how recent they started reading. Joey is more an exception. Him reading manga in his childhood is no different from me reading some random series in a school library. Connor and Garnt are very much new to reading manga obviously. They had never even heard of Horimiya before its anime adaption yet MAL numbers which are mainly users from the West give a good idea of what was popular back then and why the number of users are so high. My original comment was explaining why these manga were popular. If they were scouring the internet at the time for manga recommendations in the early 2010s then they wouldn't be surprised.
In an attempt to help Connor try to understand what "Vibe" is Vibe is basically STYLE. And it's not limited to art style. Style can be fashion direction, cinematography (how the panel is sliced/framed), music direction, etc etc. You, Connor, happen to like dark + cool + violent vibes, which lines up perfectly with Berserk. One Piece's vibes are silly + fun vibes. And yes, slice of life stuff ALSO HAS A VIBE. Chill vibes. Stuff like Domestic Kanojo and Kuzu no Honkai has a vibe. Angsty vibe. Yes, "Vibe" can be quantified, but not by the average laymen. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
In my understanding, it's supposed to be any kind of underlying composition that creates atmosphere and enhances or convey underlying themes. This does not require the characters as agents of the story to do anything in particular to invoke an emotional response. My latest example would be Boy and the Heron. The movie is a very simple story for the fundamental plot. But there are so many aspects to the millions of details that create underlying themes that are hard to grasp without external context. Thus it creates a vibe that doesn't rely on the plot of the movie to move in this direction. BUT I think it's a very different thing for evefy medium due to the qualities of each medium. Anime has different dimensions such as time which makes pacing of moment to moment situations more relevant. While manga has a pacing on the bigger the scale, the flow of panels and the way how much is portrqyed in the limited pages. But a reader is the one dictating the amount of time they view each page. So every page can become a painting to observe and "vibe" with. And then there is the entire aspect of systems theory and cybernetics but that's going too deep. Media student out.
@@albertl5444 Yes, he is using the word to represent "I'm into this type of stuff" But he sadly dismissed that things outside of what he likes are also Vibes. Just not his kind of vibes, I hope I explained it in an easy to understand manner
@@yarion4774 Found the fellow media person lol And yes. It can be something as simple as a "pause" in certain scenes. Some movie/anime will just blaze through a convo, but then you find those shows that do dramatic pauses with excellent results and feel "Damn, that's so vibe when the music stopped as he paused before saying 'I loved you' " or something It is everything as a package, the combination of fashion, music, art style, camera work, timing, but not focused on the story/character action itself. For example, a show can be about the horrors of WW2, but if you use comedic vibe with silly cuts and upbeat BGM, you get a completely different product.
To anyone interested, I think the best publicly documented case of controlling the vibe to a perfect degree that you can in essence ORDER your audience to cry on cue, is Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name. Of course, it affects each person in varying degrees, but a good writer/director has always been able to quantify what to do/include in order to make the audience feel certain ways
I'd never considered myself an annoying manga reader, but this episode made me realize that I REALLY am. I can usually brush off any comments I think are incorrect when they're talking about anime, but about manga, I felt compelled to write like 10-page essays on why they're wrong. I didn't even know I cared that much lmfao
It pains me so much to see that two of you guys don’t know Pandora Hearts, it’s a genuinely great dark fantasy / mystery manga that you’re doing yourself a disservice with not experiencing it at least once, because that is one where everything - from beginning to end - has been planned out in complete detail and you really notice it the longer it goes and the more you read It’s my favorite story of all time
it's one of the best shonen manga around imo , unfortunately it had a trashy anime adaptation and because of that it fated into obscurity . it does get a lot of appreciation on elitist circles on tiktok though

The thing with Solo Leveling is that if you were one of the people who was following with the series when the manhwa was still on-going, you'd be blinded by the ride the train of hype every update, that's probably why it is so popular. But if you picked up the series when it was completed yeah its just demon slayer (the anime) in manhwa form
People said Lord of the Rings was unadaptable too. Then Peter Jackson did the impossible and made a movie basically the first of its kind filming all 3 back to back with just tons of budget and prep and just everything. Sure it is not a perfect adaptation of the books but it was amazing.
I think I get Connor’s vibes thing its just hard to describe. I agree One Piece isn’t a vibes show, but I do get the vibes from characters like Kizaru and Aokiji. And when the camera zooms out dramatically to show a ridiculously sized character standing over everyone. That shits a vibe
Yeah there are many different types of vibes one piece has lots of fun adventurous vibes and just like you say many villains feel unstoppable because of their height and design.
From how I'm understanding the vibe discussion I think Connor is thinking not only about the artstyle but also the perspectives, povs, mood settings shown through the art etc.
Exactly! I got what he meant. Think of the vibe of as a place. It's not JUST the lighting. The crowd. Scenery, location, food and drink. It's the subtle combination of seemingly distinct things that make a vibe!
my Artdirector and I got an aneurysm from conners explanation. Mood, lighting, setting, povs are literally artstyle/ artdirection I kinda get what he is putting down but joey hits the nail on the head tbh
@@Kliefer you are going too into it while trying explaining what he meant lol it's subjective and very few intelligent humans like us and connor can comphrend what actual vibe is for us we know when we are vibing with sm shtt like flow state
@Typhonnyx Whats subjective? Because quite literally all art has a "vibe" in reality Connor was just saying he liked one manga better so its a "vibe".
The best part about the whole “vibe” argument is that it started with Connor saying one piece doesn’t have a vibe, which by his own definition is just not true lmao
I completely understood connor's view on the vibe because thats exactly how i feel. There is more to the vibe than the story. There is the setting, the mood, the character designs, the aura and so much more. Lets say one piece is drawn in miura's style. The vibe would still be different due to the character designs. Just by looking at guts and his gritty armor, you can see his dark vibe. Luffy on the other hand looks more carefree with his free flowing bright red vest, light blue jorts and slippers.
Joey asked about what Connor does not like about One Piece, but he only answer "I don't like the vibe" which is the same as i dislike One Piece in a smooth way of saying
How Garnt went from discussing the nature of art to immediately drink of some cup that was lying around is a moment I expect to see at the best of this season of Trash Taste
52:55 Umineko no Naku Koro Ni is my favorite piece of fiction ever. I highly recommend both the VN and the manga! Episode eight is the final part and totally deserves to be up there
Vibes, etymologically speaking, come from vibration and frequency. It's a deep rabbi hole with for example that water freezes differently with different music, which is controversial. But ultimately, it's about "being on the same frequency" with something after you first "get it" and then you "vibe" with it. It's subjective and emotional, and can't really be fully explained on an intellectual level.
I'm surprised that no one mentioned Fruits Basket there, or that it wasn't high up on either Top rated or most popular lists. It's one of the most recognizable Shoujo manga, also outside the usual audience for the genre, and it had a big boost of popularity thanks to the new anime. Hell, last season of Fruba was even on the #1 spot for a while after it ended.
My sculpture teacher said it’s important to explain what you like about some thing in art but it’s completely useless to explain why you like something in art and I feel like the “ vibe “argument that happened in this episode is prime example of that
Apothecary Diaries was more popular as a light novel before the anime adaptation was announced. Everyone in my circle of readers loved Apothecary Diaries and vehemently recommended the light novel, many having never even read the manga.
Connor: Everything has vibe. Does one-piece has vibe? Connor: No. Only mistake was Connor "vibe" explanation is that he kept switching back and forth from it being a subjective thing to an objective thing
I totally get what Connor means by feeling the "vibe" of a media. You can and cannot explain the specifics of the vibe. I think vibe is a very personal way of how people connect with a piece of media. Garnt's and Joey's interpretation of vibe seems to be based on more logical and rational factors (like art style or storytelling etc.) that convey the vibe of a piece of media. As Connor said, for him, the "vibe" can't be clearly defined. A show can make no sense at all but you can still connect with the show; you feel the "vibe" even though you can't really explain why you enjoy the show. It's more on an emotional basis, therefore it can be rather irrational that sometimes can't be explained in a logical way. I mean in the end it's totally subjective what gives you the vibes.
You are overthinking it imo, Connor was pushing it just to mess with them. Initially yeah he tried to pass it off as a real thing but he saw that the others were confused and he rolled with it and made it way bigger of a thing than he initially envisioned
Easily one of my favorite openings to an episode. Garnt drinking foul mystery liquid he found on the floor, a half-inaudible argument about coffee beans. Unhinged. I'm hyped.
To put real words to Connors Vibe argument, I kinda agree. A vibe can be anything and anywhere, if you're feeling the feels from it. A vibe could be a cool night at a bummy 711 gas station parking lot and a vibe can also be entering the world of different stories. It's the entirety of the Atomsphere that makes up a vibe. Color, tone, story, location, weather, feeling, and all them coming together. Thats what creates people's unique environment and if you enjoy that environment, that's your vibe. The hardest part in figuring out who you are as a character is narrowing down your vibe 🤙
Mmm well actually, Studio Eclipse, an independent studio made up of Berserk fans, is working on a faithful adaptation of the first Berserk arc (The Black Swordsman) and they're said they are going to adapt the whole arc and no censorship. First trailer it will be released in May of this year.
honestly, Tokyo Ghoul deserves the ranking... Yes, we all know the anime is garbage, it's pretty much the poster child of manga that got butchered when they adapted it. Hell Garnt even made a video in defense of it when he actually went and read it so it's surprising to me that he didn't really talk about or defend it here because it's so obvious that Joey and Connor haven't read it and are just basing their reactions of the memes and anime...
Yeah, I thought Garnt would defend it atleast a little bit, but I am not surprised. In his video he did say Manga was better and really good but did consider it as a Masterpiece or something near that level. For me it is a masterpiece.
I feel like thats the general community's opinion on Tokyo Ghoul too. That the manga could really be considered a masterpiece, even people who haven't read it know that so I was really surprised to see how they wrote it off here. At the very least they didn't even discuss what they dislike about it :/
@@minie776 Exactly my reaction. I think the reason they didn't get into it is that it seems only Garnt has actually read the manga, and while it's hard to say based on his video alone it doesn't seem like he completely caught onto a lot of the smaller details and things that would elevate it from just a good manga to a great one. I could also be wrong here as it could just be time restrictions making him cut things down for the video, or him trying to avoid any spoilers... But he never got into things like how the characters and their personalities are represented as tarot cards and how the story mirrors the fool's journey. He never got into any of the foreshadowing and small details such as the "chin touching", Kaneki's relationship with his mom, the symbolism of his hair color, even the damn title of :re which was right in front of readers for like 80 chapters without the community catching onto what it actually meant. He did touch on some of the great points though such as the depth of characters, how morally ambiguous it can sometimes be, and how Ishida breaks the mold with his panels to really show the emotions of the characters. But despite all this it doesn't feel like he really "got" everything, at least not from just what was presented in the video. Again, it could just be to avoid spoilers, but from his video he still presents it as if Kaneki became a ghoul by accident and incompetence on the doctors parts... He doesn't really discuss some of the major differences between the anime and manga such as what actually happens post "white hair Kaneki" and he doesn't really touch on the details missed in any of the anime adaptations, such as the scene in :re where they forgot to make Haise touch his chin in the anime! Out of context it sounds like an extremely nitpicky details to complain about, but in the context of Tokyo Ghoul it's about as bad as it gets as it litterally gives the scene the opposite meaning of what it's supposed to convey!
Berserk Game Ideas- Just spitballing here 1. A Berserk game could be set during Gaiseric's conquest as a random soldier or even just play as Gaiseric. 2. Perhaps even an original story about how the player character or set protagonist becomes an Apostle and depending on your choices and biases influence what or whom you choose to sacrifice. 3. Play as Flora during her time traveling and helping people maybe see human Skull Knight. 4. Void origin story? 5. The player is trying to survive in the world during Fantasia and traveling to Falconia.

Just to add my opinion on the Vibe Discussion: I have this idea of 'charm' where you can let a story with objective faults slide because the other aspects carries it.
Vibe is just a number of different things. It’s the visuals, the music, or even the lack of visuals and music. It could also be a moment in a story, or not. Basically anything that makes you feel a particular kind of way is a vibe. It’s similar to “atmosphere” and “tone” which can come in the form of visuals and audio, or both.
the best out of context clip which might win a TT awardw started here at 41:19 Garnt just casually grad a cup of stale water out of nowhere and sipped it two times (the second time he might finished it) until he frowned and realized it at 41:42
48:14 Genuinely just happy that Houseki no Kuni got mentioned! If anyone is even slightly interested please give the manga a shot, it's a very introspective story about purpose where the protagonist unlocks new form as the story goes on, but for each form's benefits they just get much more depressed/stressed and much more desperate to get their happiness. The worldbuilding is on par of attack on titan, and the art is genuinely very unique! It uses a lot of negative space to make extremely cool scenes and, because the main characters are gems, it has a lot of "body horror" that involves them getting broken up (and eventually put back together). My absolute favourite story of all time, and next month the final chapter will get released so it's the best time to start reading it!
Congrats on 200 episodes! Also, this video kept reminding me of my favorite Filthy Frank line: I'll always be one step ahead of you... cause I read the manga ~
Pandora Hearts mentioned 👀 it's my favourite manga, it honestly has everything I like. I recently started collecting Houseki no kuni too, very glad it was so high on the list! (Chihayafuru deserves more though!)
1 - Berserk 2 - Tokyo Ghoul 3 - Oyasumi Punpun 4 - Koe No Katachi 5 - Made in Abyss 6 - Happiness 7 - Deadman Wonderland (Shiro deserved better) Would be my list, but I'm not a huge manga reader so, if I had read manga like Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Monster, then I would have probably loved them. However I will defend the Tokyo Ghoul Manga because it truly is a fantastic manga. Admittedly doesn't have the strongest ending, but man it was a hell of a ride. It's so frustrating as well, because if you read the manga it's mostly a character driven story with actual deep meaning, but then the anime reduced it to edgy shounen shit and that's all people remember it for. It's not even a shounen manga! And then when it ended it almost felt like a part of me dying because I had been reading that shit every week for years at that point so there was kind of this hole left behind. very similar to how it felt when I heard the news about Miura passing...
Mine would be - - Dandadan - Blue Box - Bokutachi ga Yarimashita - My Dearest Self With Malice Aforethought - Summer time rendering (the anime is on par with the manga)
The art discussion made me remember how Carl Sagan said that human beings, with their consciousness and self-awareness, represent a unique manifestation of the universe's inherent complexity. And how we are a way for the universe to experience itself. Art cannot exist without a consciousness to behold it.
Thank you Garnt for acknowledging that MAL is not exactly accurate, just a good guestimate for the general consensus on stuff. I feel that's important to note
i wouldn't consider it a good guestimate for the general consensus either , most of the people who use mal aren't surface level/newer anime fans yet there a lot of things on mal that are simply absurd to me tbh [like opm and chainsaw man being rated above tokyo ghoul re , usogui and pandora hearts]
It's because once upon a time MAL was a great list to use for new fans to get a grasp of what was good to watch, where every show and manga rated highly was hands down going to be good. The algorithm makes sense. It's only after when Your Name. became number 1 when it dropped in 2016 that caused mayhem in the community. It was a special moment for FMAB to be dethroned. But after that shows like Kaguya-sama being top 5 just showed how with newer fans coming the the list became less and less trusted
Garnt’s description of “vibe” made total sense to me, Connor’s made no sense to me and made me feel like I was going crazy (and I do have an arts degree haha)
I had a stop in the middle of my shower because as someone that loves literature the thing that Connor is describing as the vibe is tone! TONE. in modern times a lot of people have actually described tone as vibe probably starting from the beach boys good vibrations. Connor doesn't know what it means, he just like word. Monkey say thing feel good, monkey don't know how to describe. Lol
@@martindang7333 Great point. The "vibe" is like your own taste in art. Subjective and unique to you.

Connor doesn't know the difference between those two words, lol. Hard concepts for monkey, lol
@@Mellow_Yellow13 He said the vibe because he got One Piece Video, so he need to keep hype it up LOL

also because he kept saying The Vibe, as if its a single unchanging entity that requires a proper noun.

@@_ch1pset very simple:
Berserk vibes:
lonely formidable warrior guts
companionship of puck and his antics
creepy souls and demons
dark and gloomy weather (often)

Takehiko Inoue is the GOAT.
49:24 to correct Joey, Real came out AFTER Vagabond started releasing so its actually the other way around. Inoue took a hiatus from writing Vagabond to write Real instead. Inoue has this sense of responsibility in maintaining an impossible perfectionist standard in regards to Vagabond so he writes Real as a break from his burnout working on Vagabond. Also it's not in "permanant hiatus". Real's latest chapter was released this February.

In an attempt to help Connor try to understand what "Vibe" is
Vibe is basically STYLE.
Yes it called feelings. Connor feels happy and enjoyable when he saw something with dark, violent, cool stuff.
@@albertl5444 Yes, he is using the word to represent "I'm into this type of stuff"
But he sadly dismissed that things outside of what he likes are also Vibes. Just not his kind of vibes, I hope I explained it in an easy to understand manner
@@yarion4774 Found the fellow media person lol
And yes. It can be something as simple as a "pause" in certain scenes.
Some movie/anime will just blaze through a convo, but then you find those shows that do dramatic pauses with excellent results and feel "Damn, that's so vibe when the music stopped as he paused before saying 'I loved you' " or something
It is everything as a package, the combination of fashion, music, art style, camera work, timing, but not focused on the story/character action itself.

He can just say "I dislike One Piece & like Berserk more"

Vibes, etymologically speaking, come from vibration and frequency. It's a deep rabbi hole with for example that water freezes differently with different music, which is controversial. But ultimately, it's about "being on the same frequency" with something after you first "get it" and then you "vibe" with it. It's subjective and emotional, and can't really be fully explained on an intellectual level.

Watching Connor constantly contradict himself when talking about vibes was a vibe
I read Tokyo ghoul before watching the anime and I honestly don’t think any adaptation would have done the manga justice. It’s the same with berserk
Well, I always have the manga to look back at. It's a masterpiece imo. Sad that some people won't give it a read based on what the adaptation showed.

Berserk Game Ideas- Just spitballing here
The Houseki no Kuni manga is a goddamn masterpiece, its still ongoing and i think its nearing its compleation.
Can highly recommend
Joey and Garnt failed the Vibe Check.
Nah they were making a good point, Connor had pretty much nothing to say so he just said vibe over and over
@@SquareOstrichnah the sheer people in the comments who got his idea alone bear witness to the fact that isn't true
@@Caleb-zl4wk Numbers mean nothing, he just thought something was cool and tried to spin it into something bigger that's all
@@SquareOstrich I disagree but like... it's all good. Mb for sounding combative in that last comment, I forgot how exhausting doing this all over a comment section was lmao
@@Caleb-zl4wk Dw my dude, I like your vibe
Just to add my opinion on the Vibe Discussion:
I have this idea of 'charm' where you can let a story with objective faults slide because the other aspects carries it.
Poor Mudan having to censor half of the entire intro
Aesthetic + idea = vibes
Soft color panels, cutesy art + wholesome girls camping = chill, sweet, comfy vibes.
Vibe is just a number of different things. It’s the visuals, the music, or even the lack of visuals and music. It could also be a moment in a story, or not. Basically anything that makes you feel a particular kind of way is a vibe. It’s similar to “atmosphere” and “tone” which can come in the form of visuals and audio, or both.
the best out of context clip which might win a TT awardw started here at 41:19
Garnt just casually grad a cup of stale water out of nowhere and sipped it two times (the second time he might finished it) until he frowned and realized it at 41:42
Connor's "If I shred up your body Joey" has the same vibe as Jerma's "If I chop you up in a meat grinder"
meat... grinder...
Tripping off the beat kinda

Who is Jerma?

The boys arguing about the vibe has unironically killed the vibe this ep
Agreed
the last 2 episodes of solo leveling were insane. I hope they get back to it in a future episode
Congrats on 200 episodes!
Also, this video kept reminding me of my favorite Filthy Frank line:
I'll always be one step ahead of you... cause I read the manga ~
3:14 Joey: “we filmed that 20 minutes ago”. Oh so they filmed those backlog episodes back to back?
this episode was truly a vibe
When Connor is ranting about “vibes” I think he means “tone and mood.” He’s talking about tone and mood.
Vibe = atmosphere thats created, how it makes you feel “comforting, nostalgic, excited etc”
Pandora Hearts mentioned 👀 it's my favourite manga, it honestly has everything I like. I recently started collecting Houseki no kuni too, very glad it was so high on the list! (Chihayafuru deserves more though!)
In no particular order:
- Oyasumi Punpun (Asano)
- Vagabond (Inoue)
- Sunny (Matsumoto)
- Goodbye Eri (Fujimoto)
My personal favourites
1 - Berserk
2 - Tokyo Ghoul
3 - Oyasumi Punpun
4 - Koe No Katachi
5 - Made in Abyss
6 - Happiness
7 - Deadman Wonderland (Shiro deserved better)
Would be my list, but I'm not a huge manga reader so, if I had read manga like Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Monster, then I would have probably loved them.
This is in a particular order
1. Usogui
2. Vagobond
3. The climber
These manga to me are perfect
@@something3251 still havent read The Climber!
Mine would be -
- Dandadan
- Blue Box
- Bokutachi ga Yarimashita
- My Dearest Self With Malice Aforethought
- Summer time rendering (the anime is on par with the manga)
@@RodrigoBarrazaNunez I would highly recommend you do it’s amazing to the art work to the beautifully crated story and much more
Definitely agree with Connor about vibes, to me vibes are something that I use to describe something I like when I don't have any other words for it.
41:36 THE WAY GARNT LOOKED BACK AT THE CUP AFTER DRINKING IT😭😭😭😭😭
The vibe and art convos are Connor’s “I feel” definitions without ever digging deeper into what either term means
I understand Connor. The vibe is a real, based and valid aspect.
The whole VIBE part, has the same vibe as that time that Joey and Garnt attacked Conner for bringing a 75% keyboard when he travels.

18:10 is that where the "you thought this was a spoiler, but its me Dio!" Came from?
Not even close it’s basically a small sample of overly dedicated weebs. Mal is maybe 5% of anime watchers
@@SkeetWeet4368it makes sense if you consider that people scores are influenced by hype
@@SkeetWeet4368 It's probably because of more hype being around those series.
this episode is a vibe
Garnt’s description of “vibe” made total sense to me, Connor’s made no sense to me and made me feel like I was going crazy
(and I do have an arts degree haha)
I had a stop in the middle of my shower because as someone that loves literature the thing that Connor is describing as the vibe is tone! TONE. in modern times a lot of people have actually described tone as vibe probably starting from the beach boys good vibrations. But yes, tone is something you can specifically like about a piece of literature.
i feel like when talking about manhwa's story it kinda shows that maybe japanese mangaka having an editor helps so much in terms of how well the story is made
