connor: Music to listen to while gaming joey: Music that is probably similar to what he makes garnt: Music to listen to while being transported to another world
What garnt missed out on is actually that natsuki has as much as brain cells that a teenage boy has at that age and the character development as he goes into college and then becoming an adult, the way he matures and accepts the dumpster fire of the situation he's in. There are actually consequences for loving your teacher, your sister like in real life and how characters deals with them
Garnt really sold me on the manga he talked about. He explained them so passionately, and it made them sound infinitely interesting. Even Domestic Girlfriend lol.
If you ever get shamed for liking Domestic Girlfriend just telling them "Wow, I guess you don't support women artists, I guess I'm just built different" Lmao
Ya I get praising his art but it's almost like they weren't crediting One for his amazing writing when One is the reason why One Punch Man exists. Despite his art skill, and his friends and family discouraging him not to become a mangaka, he knew what he loved and kept doing it. I have a lot of respect for One
@@kolortechnician Exactly the opposite of Mob Psycho 100 for me. If it had a spectacular ultra detailed art I think it would lose a lot of its personal and intimate feel.
I love how in Vinland saga, you see Thorfinn, a character that starts so violent and angry, become significantly less violent and go towards living (or trying to) as a “true warrior” without a sword. Then in juxtaposition, you see Canute, who starts off so feebly, change into a much more violent person. They both follow in their fathers footsteps. Vinland Saga is beautiful for a ton of reasons.

But the artist has a new sci-fi body horror survival manga called "Gigantis" and it's based on a novel on the same name. Y'all should check it out but it's only 1 chapter for now though cause the manga just recently released last week.
Im guessing the amount of work is totally different or something but how can your series go on hiatus because of health problems but you start releasing a new series?
Ikr how do you even mess up this bad... all their manager had to do is just open MAL and he would see that it's still ongoing to this day XDD "it's finished in 2014" lmao
When Garnt had Psyren, and then Joey said he loved it, I thought I was in some sort of strange dreamworld because I really didn't think anybody else cared about Psyren.
I disagree when Connor said that Guts just gets even more violent as the series goes, shit just happens to him. I mean the edgiest Guts has been in was the Black Swordsman Arc. He has come a long way since because he is more accepting to things and has found new companions he can rely on.
@@ianabe636 yeah when he said that it didn’t sit right. There’s literally panels where guts stops swinging his sword because he realises he now has people to protect, rather than just be a violent monster. I imagine Connor was just generalising for his argument, but it’s just downplaying guts’ character arc
@@NoNo-fe8kn he probably forgot about the Brand of Sacrifice which Guts has no choice but fight everynight. Imagine if Thorfinn has the Brand, would he still be able to farm and seek for a peaceful life? Intead of Trashtastes, it should be Trashtakes.

“The Case Study Of Vanitas” and “I Hear The Sunspot” are probably my two faves. Though I’ve read a ton, those two are definitely my children. I’ve read “The Case Study Of Vanitas” since the first manga came out in 8th grade, and it finely getting an anime during my freshman year of college was really heartwarming.
I´m currently watching Vanitas and it´s so cool. Is the manga even better? And "I hear the sunspot" is so adorable! In Germany we have a total of 5 volumes right now and I can´t wait to get more!!

I gotta disagree with that. In my opinion most of the best manga are the ones that don't overstay their welcome. Some of my favorites off the top of my head are Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, Death Note, Azumanga Daioh, Solanin, Orange... All relatively short manga that wouldn't be nearly as good if they were longer
@@austinwiebe3801 if the narrative is short and it keeps its mark, it's cool but long anime can't tell their story in 20-30 episodes. One Piece cannot and I am happy for it. There is a reason it is the second most selling comic ever.
@CjayPlyz went through majority of the Chinese light novels. Most of them just ended up annoying me after a few dozen chapters in, though I did read hundreds of their chapters, i stopped reading them.
My favorite Onizuka moment is when he took a 5 hour test to renew his teaching license in 1 hour, with several bullets in his gut after beating up a room full of guys trying to kidnap one of his students.
The biggest kicker was it wasn't even his own student, it was the kid of the lady trying to get him fired, and the kid even tried to make him her slave by saying she'd talk to her mom to not get him fired. The man is a straight up legend and my favorite manga character of all time.
Punpun is a masterpiece. i followed it while it was ongoing and have re-read this several times since its completion. This is a story that hits hard into you even after re-reading it for the fifth time.

This truly is not trash taste anymore, its The Gentlemen's Taste
The reason I think Jump never fails is that they get eyes on probably every single manga before it gets sent anywhere else. Jump is where every mangaka wants to be published.
Oh forgot about that one...iirc the ending arc wasn't great? I think it had a hiatus before that idk. But I remember loving it so so much before that. Hardly remember anything else
Psyren is the one that had the ending rushed in the two last chapters. Honestly, with the amount of time they were given, they at least gave it a decent "ending" point.
I loved Psyren. I didn't know about it cancellation by Shonen and the ending did feel really rushed when I read it. But, even rushed, there was still a satisfying ending (for me at least) compared to Bleach's ending.
I read Black Cat for the first time about 4 years ago, and I absolutely think it holds up. The entire tone was so much lighter than i expected but in a way that worked really well, all the different character dynamics were really interesting and engaging to me, and there’s also something unexplainable about it to me. Easily my favourite manga of all time, and I’m so happy joey talked about it because it needs more love.
So lemme get this square: the manga/anime the boys know they'll love but just aren't in a rush to start/can't start bc they're busy Connor: One Piece Garnt: Fullmetal Alchemist Joey: HunterxHunter
Pleasantly surprised Connor likes the Black Butler manga. Such a good story that unfortunately had an overbearing fandom steering away fans. Glad to see it getting some praise. 🙌

This has definitely convinced me to read Berserk. Side note: when Garnt says "Am I wrong" just proves the lasting influence Ladybeard has had on the podcast.
dude read it, i got to read it because of meme about berserk suffering and the ntr and it got me into the manga. the world building is so amazing i wish the dude who created it got immortal because of it xD
I fvcking love reading Berserk. Every erc, every chapter, every character was just so thought out. Everything was written perfectly, and it really showed Guts' character as the lonesome hero. It's really a masterpiece, and I'm so glad I read it. It's really THE best manga out there. The art style as well progresses which is amazing to see while you're reading it. Honestly, Berserk has all of the possible action you can think of. All of the possible worst things that could happen are all there. Even the saddest and heartfelt moments that you can also think of are all there, and presented really nicely. I agree when they said that those are the best moments in the manga. Those "quiet moments" served as breathers to Guts' really long journey. It was truly an experience reading that manga. That's why I was really sad when I heard about what happened to the mangaka. He really left a masterpiece behind :(
When i read Vagabond, Vinland Saga and Kingdom it totally changed my taste in Anime, Movies and Comics. It's so good, and as a Chinese person i hope some of the epic Mangas aren't censored in our market.
Eyeshield 21 is the one sports manga set in a high school I've read that genuinely captures what it's like to play a sport competitively at school/uni just for the pure love of it (in a way America doesn't seem to do cause people go watch high school sports and it matters so no American high school sports get it either). It was so amazing and so powerfully nostalgic for the era where I was playing rugby with my teammates at my local club under 14s/15s/16s/17s and with my uni team. And the ending is perfect. Genuinely made me cry with how beautifully it was handled.
Haikyuu! gives that feeling as well. They all seem like actual high schoolers playing a sport they love, whether they'd want to go on and play it professionally or not. There are no "villains" and you see actual progress from when you meey certain charactets first. And the pacing is just right. The ending was so heartwarming too
I have read quite a bit of sports manga but Slam Dank is just special,it was one of those manga where u didn't even know u finished reading it cause u r so invested
Connor's rection to Beck manga is so hilarious. But Beck is so good, definitely recommend it . not wishing for another animation, or a remake but I would love to hear the official version of Devil's way.
I remember reading Punpun because of Joey's recomendations near new years a couple years ago. Maybe shouldn't have read it all in one night but boy did it hit fucking HAAAAAAAARD, took me out of comission for like half a year but it certainly stayed with me ever since and marked me in a way that just made me change as a young adult. Thanks Joey
@@metallicafanatiko ya I very much agree that you shouldn't read punpun if you are struggling with mental health. I heard a lot of people said their depression got seriously bad after reading the manga
Oyasumi punpun is my favorite manga, still one of the most spine chilling stories i've ever read, i still get chills when i see the “Punpun is just fine again today” panel. Would 100% reccomend ONLY if you are in a good mental state, please do not underestimate what Joey is saying about being very depressing and needing to just sit there and contemplate what you just read.
I remember reading it about 2 years ago, and I had to drop it not because it was bad, but because it genuinely made me feel horrible. I want to pick it back up again, but unfortunately I am absolutely not in the best mental state to do so :')
I think people really overestimate how hard it is to read. Existential dread, suicidal contemplation and the "dark" inside everyone are tough subjects to cover, but only if you've never seriously thought about it yourself.
When I was younger and read Vinland saga I hated the change of pace when the farmland arc began and ended up dropping it. But rereading it now that I'm older I really enjoyed it and basically ended up understanding what Thorfinn's dad was trying to teach him, and I felt like I had grown enough (like Thorfinn, too finally understand that).
When Psyren ended, I was actually quite surprise seeing that it didn't get an anime adaptation. But considering that it ran during the era of Naruto, Bleach and One Piece and also some other manga like Toriko, Eyeshield, Bakuman and Yakitate Japan, it kind of makes sense. Maybe what is depicted in Bakuman exactly happen during that time.
Wow.. haven't heard of that title in so long... and you know what, I believe there were quite a number of shounens at the time that would most likely do well now than it did during the big 3.
As a fan of Solo Levelling I got to say - I generally agree that the story is somewhat lacking. But it is still a solidly-build world and, although it follows basically every possible Korean trope there is, it's still rather good. But the art... it is beyond gorgeous... it is borderline orgasmic. Also we all know Koreans love their necromancers just as much as the Chinese love their cultivators... not much intrigue there, tbh.

One reason why I dislike the "Giorno never develops" argument is that almost no character develops in general or develops in a major way. You said like most people that Bruno carries the arc (he is my favorite character of Part 5) but how much does Bruno change or develop? Giorno fulfilled his position as the supporting protagonist perfectly. He didn't outshine his team members but also fulfilled his goal.
Giorno was never interesting to begin with and people dont see him as a support protagonist because he is marketed as a "JoJo" the main character of every part.
I think Giorno's feels alot flatter than his peers because the bulk of his development happens in his back story, which is established VERY early on. The rest of the GioBros, we get to know a bit before they get any further development or growth. As a result, Giorno feels less nuance, even though he really isn't, since what we get right at the beginning is also what we largely end with. Jonathan's similarly static, the only difference is how his story is structured. Getting to know him as a naive brash rich kid first before time skipping to what is basically his end state gives the audience the illusion of a more substantial change. Also, kinda hurts that Giorno's the least expressive of the JoJo's. Despite Joseph, Jotaro, and Josuke arguably being more one note, Giorno's subdued personality definitely results in a coin flip when it comes to how he's perceived. He doesn't stand out, but that quality, when compared to his family, might be what makes him stand out to you.

Other than the warfare and politics, it isn't that deep in terms of philosophy, themes when compared to the other three, Berserk, Vagabond and Vinland Saga. It's good but at times it just feels shonen esque, a mature version of One Piece.
Actually, I really enjoy ONE's art style. It's super straightforward yet abstract and it really is touching my heart. Reading Mob Psycho 100 has been one of my favorite manga I think and I often come back to it cause I find the art weirdly amazing.
I agree. I think the ideas that ONE comes up with in the webcomics are great. He and Murata are long time collaborators. It is like a very good writer and an amazing artist came together at the right time.
Hot take: the onepunch man webcomic is better than the manga. The pacing is a lot better and One has the best comedic timing ever. The scene where flashy flash wants saitama to either repair his sword or give him money instead, and then saitama sends genos to buy some duct tape is so fucking hilarious. One's paneling is so underrated
Vinland saga is good imo, but for me Kingdom blasts past vinland as a historical manga. It's packed with action, the story is good throughout the series and the characters are fun as hell to watch. Whereas vinland got a kid whose only goal is to get revenge, and then he becomes good. For me it's a bit generic compared to Kingdom but still good Edit: Fucking hell, I got alot of shit for this take lmfao. I know u guys like vinland n think it makes u smarter n whatnot but I'm just saying Kingdom is better than vinland as a "Historical Manga", generally I put both about the same standing as both are good imo. It warms my heart seeing Beck get a mention and some love. As someone who started learning guitar at 15 and was getting into bands like RATM, Pearl Jam etc, the coming of age story and journey really resonated with me. I'm not even finished with the episode, but bless Connor Dawg for recommending Black Butler!! Listen, the older fandom of Kuroshitsuji is definitely uhh hm, Yaoi obsessed but once the hype train kinda died off, you really realize that Black butler isn't just yaoi bait, it's a genuinely entertaining story full of plot twists and just,,, oh boi fucked up shit. This twelve year old boy really threw his morals and never really gets it back, that boy will never be brought back into the light.
I mean honestly speaking, I was initially really drawn to the mangaka's art style, but the writing is definitely so so good as well. I've read from a tweet that the biggest most recent plot twist was something she set up and foreshadowed for more than 8 years. It's the slow, methodological build up that really affected me bc the clues were all there, I just didn't realize that it had that much of an importance to the plot 🤯
I started reading manga when I was about 15. I'm turning 40 next month, so I've been reading manga for a very long time. I've read so many titles over the years that I don't think I could come up with a 3 by 3. It's impossible! I could do it if I only considered manga that I read in recent years, but not if I considered 25 years worth of manga.
i have literally the same taste as garnt and it makes me happy that psyren and the breaker is getting more recognition rn. to anyone curious, both are worth the time and effort to read them.
Oyasumi shaped me. The manga will pull you back and when it lets go, you will fucking sky rocket mentally. The manga did better than my therapist at the time.
It got changed to Hail Devil Pass because Hiruma was the one who was doing it lol. Also I think the metaphor that Garnt was trying to tell is Musashi's(the Kicker) last kick against Teikoku Alexander. The chapter calls it the 'Christmas Miracle' or something.
2:22:00 Joey, Mx0 totally did get axed. It was given a couple chapters to "finish up", but I remember the huge uproar from fans at the time (myself included), and for a long time it was hailed as one of the greatest travesties in axed manga in online discussions. The ending is basically the main character transfers to another school to train up and become an actual magic user and that's it.
It's funny how every person that has finished Oyasumi Punpun has the same collective experience of just sitting still contemplating your entire existence after finishing the entire manga lmfao😭😭
The last 4 chapters would scar your life for days like it might make you feel empty. Definitely not recommended for people with depression or experiencing existential dread. I might sound exaggerating but think about for yourself.
My thoughts were WTF was that and why did I buy all of it before I started reading it, probably would have dropped it earlier if I hadn't. It was depressing and weird. Nice art though.
Exactly. It's still the best story I've ever read, it impacted me like no other show has, not even breaking bad. It might not be for everyone but it's dear to my heart
@@cas9007 Punpun is less "Im depressed I need help" and more "How deep can humanity fall, accelerated by depression", Case in point, that point in the final few chapters, where blinded in one eye, bloody and cut open, Punpun and Aiko have sex out in the forest. Two people truly driven to the brink of sanity more by themselves, than anything else, I'd say. It's a brilliant manga. I thought it was the most accurate depiction of depression ever, before BoJack Horseman showed up, but Punpun is a very very close second there. Again, just to reiterate, I think Punpun is more a warning of how deep you can push yourself, how deep you can sink, fueled by your own self hatred and inability to get out, than existential dread or fight against depression. I could go on for very long about Punpun. Hands down my favourite manga.
The one "Honorable Mention" in this that made me squeal with glee was Joey mentioning "Mx0". Mx0 was a manga that I binged when I was a young teenager, and it was so damned good and yet it was so underappreciated. It's been a very long time since I read it, so it might be time that I go back and flip through it again.

Giorno is the supporting protagonist? I thought he was the "JoJo" in "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure"

@@davidgrc75 If I think of the last 10 chapters as non canon it's a top 3 manga for me. With the last 10 existing it's still in my top 10 but it's hard to justify because of how much the ending killed the series for me.

ONE has a good sense of composition and perspective imo, really visible in Mob

@@dhruvsenju they are two different people
I’m so happy that they talked about Vinland Saga. The manga is GOATED.
Vinland saga is good imo, but for me Kingdom blasts past vinland as a historical manga. It's packed with action, the story is good throughout the series and the characters are fun as hell to watch. Whereas vinland got a kid whose only goal is to get revenge, and then he becomes good. For me it's a bit generic compared to Kingdom but still good
Edit: Fucking hell, I got alot of shit for this take lmfao. I know u guys like vinland n think it makes u smarter n whatnot but I'm just saying Kingdom is better than vinland as a "Historical Manga", generally I put both about the same standing as both are good imo.
Kingdom details the event of the history while at the same time expanding on a huge line of characters, while Vinland focuses on a set of characters.

02:51:00 I just remembered the first time I read Berserk about 9 years ago, devouring page after page of sir Kentaro Miura's beautiful unfinished masterpiece. Though do note that it's still One that prototypes and lays out each scene. He pretty much draws each one, sets the angle motion etc, and then just has his drawing monkey Murata does his magic :D Imagine being that good that Murata is your drawing monkey. And you are just mangaka for fun.

And the Manga’s pretty good honestly. Trashy, yes, but does more than enough to develop the characters to make the trashy plot and set up worth it for me.

You are doing "ONE" dirty, while the art by Murata is obviously better and close to god-tier. A lot of the awesome scenes in the redraw, originate from the webcomic, especially in regards to how the scenes are framed.

It warms my heart seeing Beck get a mention and some love. As someone who started learning guitar at 15 and was getting into bands like RATM, Pearl Jam etc, the coming of age story and journey really resonated with me. It’s genuinely a really good show/manga but the timing of me discovering it and it paralleling some parts of my life at the time have cemented it as my favourite.

Also the boys: *talks about their taste in manga for nearly 3 hours, making it their longest podcast episode yet.*
This confirm their statement actually. They know it’s tiring because they wouldn’t be able to stop talking about their favorite manga.
This twelve year old boy really threw his morals and never really gets it back, that boy will never be brought back into the light.
honestly if anything he just loses more and more morals over the course of the story.
No thanks.
the plot twist got me, shiz got darker and deeper
I mean honestly speaking, I was initially really drawn to the mangaka's art style, but the writing is definitely so so good as well. I've read from a tweet that the biggest most recent plot twist was something she set up and foreshadowed for more than 8 years. It's the slow, methodological build up that really affected me bc the clues were all there, I just didn't realize that it had that much of an importance to the plot 🤯
Meh.
The “angel pass” is actually a Hail Mary! It’s a Hail Mary because it’s gonna take take a miracle to be able to catch that pass!
We have similar things here in NY, we called it “hail taxi”, because it takes a miracle to get one as well!
Kinda crazy none of them put Blame! on their lists. It's a sci-fi masterpiece and the art is just breathtaking.
Blame! is a litmus test for good taste.
The blood going through my heart and veins felt like petrol after I finished. Great manga
Every time they said the “moon” when describing “terra formars”, I was screaming “MARS not the moon, it’s in the title for gods sake” in my head.
Yes!
