It's a really good story
The conversation about live action vs animated romance turned into a really great example of the differences in preferences that people have for different mediums with Garnt being for animated, Connor being for live action, and Joey being in the middle. A big reason I think that romance was a good angle to approach that conversation from is that it’s a genre where the more obvious strengths of animation don’t really shine and the limitations of live action aren’t really present so it’s more of a level playing field to discuss the fundamental strengths and weaknesses of both sides and what preferences you can have for each.
I don’t agree with his opinion on anime romance but I do agree with him on the advantages live action (pure) romances have over anime romance when it comes to body language.
My fav animated moment of what real romance is in dressup darling. The scene when the lights go out they hear the love making next to them but they get so lost in moment, u hear the breath, u see the soft motion of care, the slow but steady speed of going in for the kiss. Then the anime pops in and the phone rings! FUCK!!!!
I don’t agree with what they said about facial expressions and body language though. Some of the most expressive characters I’ve seen have been in anime.
Hot take, La La Land didn't work in the way it was intended. The buildup of the romance didn't sell me on why the two loved each other. So obviously the devolvement arc had much less of an impact since, y'know, it never really was a great love to begin with. It took itself so seriously that it ended up being ironically funny.
@@lupolinar Comment pops up, disappears, I rewind, I sneeze, message pops up and then disappears again. Pinpointing a second long scene is annoying to do on a phone.
Ayo bro you can' say that without referencing what they were debating: Western vs Anima romance, and how realistically fucked up should the relationships be
It’s funny that Gnart was surprised Sydney watched Naruto when for me, Naruto being on there (and specifically THAT image used for it) was the dead giveaway. I don’t know what shows Sydney has seen or hasn’t seen, but she is EXACTLY that person who wore a Naruto headband to school in the late 2000’s and ran with her arms behind her back. Also, all the degen stuff on the 3x3. That’s all Sydney.
What garnt was saying about actors vs something animated effected suspension of disbelief is something ive always felt about anything that ever gets a live action tbh
Joey's comment on Ano Hana is so real. I didn't watch when it came out, but since so many friends love it I decided to give it a go many many years later. It did nothing for me, but I always had that thought that I probably just lost that overall timming
As someone who hasn’t seen a lot of these still I appreciate CDawg hosting this and getting the other two to elaborate. These last couple of eps are some of my favs Welcome to the NHK is a great series for anybody who has ever struggled with self-acceptance and demotivation, and is actually some of the only media I’ve ever come across that deals with this issue with kindness rather than judgment, while also being a hell of a trip

Not many people even know about NHK and it deserves more attention. My younger brother who's 18 lists NHK as one of his top favorite series due to how raw and relatable it was.
What I think the show really does well is shows that everyone has some shit going on in their life. Even the "normal people" in the show are depressed, unhappy, or looking to find some type of meaning. That is how the show resonated with me.

2:07:28 There is a Nausicaa Manga and it came first. The reason why the movie exists is because Miyazaki agreed to make the manga if he could make a movie about it. The manga itself is considered Miyazakis magnus opus and is actually much better than the movie.
Sanest anime fan. Who tf goes to anime for romance or slice of life when its done so much better in other media? I'll tell you who, big smelly dumb people
I can’t fault Joey and Garnt for this since they definitely only watched the anime, but it just pissed me off while so I’ll put this here. White Album 2 is considered a masterpiece in the VN world, in both the West and East. The anime only adapted the introductory chapter which is basically just the prologue that sets the story in its tracks. The writing is amazing, and the music is Chef Kiss. The writer of it is the same guy who wrote Saekano. Note, this is about White Album 2, and not 1.
the fact that they then complained (connor, specifically) about romance in japanese media with how they're supposedly afraid of making conflicts that stems from the relationship itself, how japanese media ain't good at depicting love triangle and everything else made it even more ironic lol. not their fault at all considering as you said, they probably only watched the anime, but it's just funny that the japanese romance they wanted to see is right there all along, and they shit on it lol.
I just slammed my fist on the table about Nausicaä not having a manga. It has a manga! It was originally a manga! Written and drawn by Miyazaki himself! I was actually disappointed with the movie not being nearly as deep and emotional as the original manga, but it's understandable because the manga is so long he wouldn't have been able to fit it all in the movie. The manga is so good. I'm especially disappointed in Joey for not even knowing about it. :'(
Also Miyazaki finished the manga after the film (I think when the film was realised, he only had written the first 3 volumes). He changed the planned end, because he realised that Nausicaa was too much a bland figure with a message he didnt agree with anymore.
The written scenario by Maruto Fumiaki for the White Album 2 (WA2) two-part visual novel was an absolute masterpiece. People tend to downplay WA2's reputation from only watching its anime adaption, but we should always remember adaptions almost-always lower the quality of any original source that exist out there, especially ones with a lot of dialogue (light novels, visual novel games). But WA2 is definitely one of the best pieces of Japanese romance literature that exists out there due to the mastering of character interaction, dialogue, and inner monologue when it comes to romantic feelings and conflicts of the visual novel game.
The anime adaption was perfectly fine and not of lower quality, just that it only contained the introductory chapter of the VN. Joey and Garnt just have no idea what they are talking about.
@@ChrisU2012 I am just a bit biased having read Maruto's JPN scenario 😅 Having to see a work be adapted into a whole different container (anime) and realistically omitting dialogue was kinda an oof to me. I am definitely not saying the anime is bad, it was definitely really good, it's just the quality was lowered compared to the VN

Hold on to your seats... not just the Vinland Saga author was inspired by Wickie the Viking to make Vinland Saga... Oda was ALSO inspired by Wickie the Viking to make One Piece! This fact still blows my mind after years since I never knew that show was so popular in Japan. I saw it as a little kid in German television. It was a dope show for children and for its time. It was made by a Japanese animation studio from which Nippon Animation was later on formed. So it was made by a Japanese animation studio for German speaking television but they obviously also aired it with a Japanese dub in Japan which is why these two probably also saw it back then. Ngl the fact that a childrens cartoon that was produced for the German TV network ZDF and Austrian TV network ORF (state funded TV channels) inspired these goated Japanese authors to make these masterpieces makes me more proud to be German than anything else in this world. And I don't really feel patriotic about anything else. Also massive props to the Swedish author, Runer Jonsson, who wrote the original series of children's books which were then adapted into the German cartoon series produced by the Japanese. Just a really wild collab.
The last 3x3 is definitely the best one here. Just straight good taste. It also has Lodoss War which is actually based on a D&D campaign the writer did in the 80s, and it was a multimedia project with games, and light novels that came out before the anime did. There is tons of RPGs for the PC-98, the PC Engine and SNES. It's really cool to see how a D&D campaign became an entire multimedia franchise like that.
Idk, a lot of people forget it, but in Toradora it does not start off as the main couple being together or even trying to, and the episode where Minori realizes Ryuji and Taiga just work better together and that it's heading that way, and she kinda breaks just sticks with me as one of those emotional scenes.
Joey saying he has never seen or heard of Akazukin Chacha actually surprises me. I remember as a really young kid watching this show in Taiwan (we used to have popular kids anime dubbed into Mandarin, probably still do, IDK) and so much of it is ingrained in my memory to the point that I randomly remembered this anime about a month ago with no prompt.
Don't know when I first remembered watching it, but I definitely remembering watching it on TH-cam at one point. Part of it is due to the parts debacle (1, 2 and 3) being so prominent. It wasn't till later when I could actually finish it by using certain websites.
I'm not super into shoujo, but I wish they had someone who can fight for shoujo stories bc some of them are genuinely good stories and the bois haven't watched it or assume Emily only likes it bc she relates to it lol
I agree with this comment but more on the side of slice of life and the "socially anxious anime girl" type shows Don't get me wrong though, there really needs to be someone who can come on and actually give them a real discussion about shoujo, cuz it gets kinda repetitive after a while when they cycle through all the battle shounen anime every couple episodes and I just have to nod my head cuz I don't watch any of them

A real point to Conner about Hajime No Ippo: You will grow to love Ippo, but also his Gym mates and the opponents they face. The enemies are super well written and if they arent one offs they stick around and get further developments. Its long but its so worth it.
I concur. Cloverworks doing the best job that is to actually replicate the feeling and atmosphere of the manga. All the scores are original, the animation is crazy insane for a slice of life (480p looks like 4k in this show). They even have their own blue rays cover for each character episode. Crazy man

The thing about Suzume is that (apparently) he never meant to include romance. The chair guy was supposed to be a female friend but (apparently) the executives wanted romance because that's what made Your Name so successful. I agree with Garnt that the romance threw the story off. Movie might've been a masterpiece without the romance tbh
I don’t feel the same. It was definitely the weakest romance of his last 3 movies but I didn’t feel it detracted from anything. It’s just the first one where it wasn’t a plus. All that said, I would have preferred the female be the older character (forgot his name).

Immediately guessed Kevin Penkin's because he's probably the one great Earth Maiden Arjuna stan left on the planet and I respect that dedication immensely; and frankly, as the boys said, even if I weren't familiar with this fact, that nearly every show and film on there has a truly immaculate soundtrack and the one outlier is a very memorable and compelling entry in the animated dumpster fire canon would have tipped me off immediately. Also, conflict of interest or not, Made in Abyss is god-tier and he *should* be proud to have worked on it, let alone to have created one of the most iconic soundtracks in the medium. Extremely based chart. P.S. Shinkai has actually talked in interviews about how the very strange, perfunctory romance plotline in Suzume was a bit of malicious compliance on his part: He had floated a couple of ideas for films without his trademark angsty heterosexual romance plotting, whether devoid of romance entirely or exploring a lesbian relationship, and his producers shot him down under the belief that it wouldn't be marketable, so he decided to turn the male love interest into a literal piece of furniture and sideline him for most of the film.

Them talking about romance moves where it devolves and Mudan just slowly putting LaLa Land in the frame was comedic gold LOL 45:10

I also think mushishi also highlights the mystery and wonder of the world well.

It’s funny that Gnart was surprised Sydney watched Naruto when for me, Naruto being on there (and specifically THAT image used for it) was the dead giveaway. true. because real actors make my brain go "hmmm this is real world made with real people" but anime is like "this is a fiction made with fictional characters in a fictional world with no connection to reality" like you sometimes see"melting" character in anime and it's never out of place but put that in real life and see that turn into a horror show

2:07:28 There is a Nausicaa Manga and it came first. The reason why the movie exists is because Miyazaki agreed to make the manga if he could make a movie about it. The manga itself is considered Miyazakis magnus opus and is actually much better than the movie.
The manga started before, and then continued far later than the anime (Miyazaki changed the ending)

Note, this is about White Album 2, and not 1.
wait there was a 1? i thought that was an urban legend. i have never heard anyone mention about the 1
the fact that they then complained (connor, specifically) about romance in japanese media with how they're supposedly afraid of making conflicts that stems from the relationship itself, how japanese media ain't good at depicting love triangle and everything else made it even more ironic lol.
not their fault at all considering as you said, they probably only watched the anime, but it's just funny that the japanese romance they wanted to see is right there all along, and they shit on it lol.
I believe what the anime they've describe is the first White Album it was a car crash Romance show

Yeah I know, it made me quite upset as well lol. You think you'd look it up before making a statement about how you wish there was a manga lmao
White album 2 is soooo good, but when you finish it you want to shared this feeling with someone and see their heart get broken it's so relaxing

@@shyguy5473I can't tell if you're serious or this is very clever sarcasm
I mean it is an amazing show and has an amazing opening 🤣

Voice of a Distant Star is my favorite Makoto Shinkai film. Something about the time dilation really resonated with me.
