Hey Garnt, since you are not afraid to get into books for new media, I recommend the Mistborn series from Brandon Sanderson. It is a fantasy book that begins on the premise that, what if the dark lord won? The first book starts as a heist to try to destabilize the empire and is a self conclusive book in case you do not like it, however if you do, there are two more books and then another four in a future era within the same world and there are more stories connected in the galaxy should you like to read more from Sanderson.
1:53:02 so true. I think about the popularity of certain things and how they came to be. Majority of the time they just get so big it’s sort of a collection of consciousness between everyone. But with the flow of entertainment sped up and the life spans of those things have 3-6 days of longevity, it’s almost impossible to connect and find that common ground. I do think it’s cool that there’s so many unique people and they have their own things but the relatability and finding that tribe or people is at an all time high.
I do that, but probably for different reason. Doesn't matter if someone is fidgeting with something or texting. I am not even looking at what someone is typing, but I am just staring at SOMETHING that is not static. Happens more when I am tired.
Love the extra effort you guys are putting in to try and put out some timely episodes - we all know how busy you are (and are going to be this year). It's not that they are bad, but there is definitely a level of disconnect when its 2-month old banked episodes that are being uploaded week after week.
Connor joining the neighborhood watch groups is so relatable. There's one in the area I live, too. It's bored people looking for some excitement and to stir up some drama. Everyone is a Facebook detective and they see everything as suspicious. I'm paranoid when I'm out in public that if i look at someone the wrong way I'll end up in a Facebook post. "A guy looked in the general direction of me and my child earlier, he seemed very suspicious. Be careful out there peeps".
The biggest factor for early TH-cam's low mobile use was more to do with the cost of mobile data and the low coverage of wifi. Most houses didn't get wifi until probably 08-10. I didn't even have a phone that could play videos until 2010, but I started gaming on my PC in 2004, and because of the internet/PC/cable situation, instead of a second monitor, I literally had a small 14in TV next to my monitor
Honestly I like that we all watch different things because now we all have different stuff we can talk about. we can also recommend shows to each other and contrast what we've seen. Someone describes a show or movie and you've seen something similar, you can tell them about it or recommend it! if we all saw the exact same things we'd just be having the same conversations with people over and over.
For the DnD movie if you listen carefully to how the characters speak, you can differentiate player characters from NPCs based on their speech pattern. Some of the events in the movie doesn't seem to make sense, but for DnD players you would get it, e.g. the labyrinth fight where the DM forced the scenario to happen cause he had already setup the battle board; the self insert paladin character that used to be from the DM's pervious campaign he played in; the overpowered staff the DM had to insert cause the players destroyed the only way across the lava chasm; every main character must resolve their back story arc, etc. The movie would have done well if not for the OGL debacle, and sandwiching it between John Wick and Mario didn't help it either.
1:36:47 This commentary from Connor remind me of the tragedy of King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword. That movie was really good and was peak fantasy/magic world, with a lot to expand and explore how to take old Arthurian stories and put it in a new light. Packed with a good story, action, characters and interactions, with a killer soundtrack to wrap it up. Unfortunetaly, it failed in the box office and I can´t accept that I live in a world without those 6 other planned movies in that new universe.
Agreed. While the movie had flaws (A LOT of flaws), it also had some pretty entertaining and interesting concepts (for example: the whole tower thing may seem pretty generic, but it could also be a reference to something happened in the original story, where Merlin and Vortigern saw the Dragons under it). And while the other movies probably wouldn't have been better, it would've been pretty cool to see a shared a universe about the Knights of the Round Table, like one about Lancelot, one about Gawain and his Brothers, etc....
@danielvalverde63 Oh okay, Yeah My mom loves that one and from what little I have seen from it, It was pretty decent, I'm really surprised they didn't continue with that and make more
Adding onto their slow burn take, I think another reason for why slow movies are rarer is because of how random the success is. Like for instance, Dune and Bladerunner 2049 were both made by the same director. They're both excellent films, but for some reason 2049 was a financial failure, whereas Dune succeeded. And as much video essay analysts try to pinpoint why this is, I don't think anyone *really* knows why this happened. It's like how Vinland Saga's farming arc birthed a meme; Some people thought the slow second season would fail, some thought it would succeed- I don't think anyone expected that it would birth a philosophical meme. Yet here we are.
Ive heard the OP trailer was finished a while ago so I have some hope the show looks a bit more polished upon release. That said, I do like the overall feel of the teaser! I've been reading OP so long the drawn versions of them are engrained in my head and its hard for me to look at it from the perspective of someone who hasnt even heard of OP before. If it does break the anime live action mold and blows up worldwide I'll be stoked! The story built from the characters definitely kept me reading so even if it looks a little weird, it could still be captivating!
I think the issue with most live action is that they try to hard to stick to the anime style but in live action, anime and live action are different mediums and live action needs to play to its own strengths instead of just trying to carbon copy the anime
The problem is when you do that, all the basement-dwelling weebs who don't understand that will be complaining obnoxiously about it and the negative word of mouth spreads faster than the positive. See how we have a hugely successful Rurouni Kenshin live action series and all these ignoramuses ever speak about is still Dragonball Evolution. It's damned if you do, damned if you don't with the medium, and one half of your audience will have already made up their mind about your show before they even see it in full.
Genuinely think that Berserk could be a good ass live action in loving hands. The initial season covering Black Swordsman/Golden Age would only need about the Witcher budget I imagine
We've had so many Live Action Anime discussions but I've never heard them talk about the Rurouni Kenshin Live Action films. Arguably one of the best live action adaptations that exist, and there's four of them. Also the "uncanny valley" feeling Garnt is talking about is probably the AOT live-action filter that's blatantly obvious on that fish shot, the darkish, smokey shade.
Also the DND movie works cause luck is a huge factor in the entire film which is what they used to reflect the dice rolls. Luck has always been the hidden factor in everything they do from the very start of the film with the guy being late and all, to the wizard having his foot stuck, even the decisions they make are sometimes "out of the box" but still works which is something you usually do in a real DND game.
I am honestly surprised Connor enjoyed the new DnD movie so much after the complaints about jokes in Marvel movies, the movie is good dont get me wrong but it really had a "Guardians of the Galaxy" feel with its writing, one liners and character dynamics, just slightly family friendly and more traditional.
Speaking about youtubers’ maturity, I commend Garnt for being an awesome role model without him even noticing it. Over the last decade that I’ve been perusing this platform, there are far too few creators whose content I’ve loved so much for being an inspiration for creativity and passion. His writing and speaking is impeccable. To this day, I still go back and rewatch his video essays on different anime, a few special mentions are the ones he did for the end of Eva, and Your Name. His words and delivery speak volumes of the love and passion he has of the medium. Even his other content that are meme-y and unserious, I find most of them touching and inspirational in a way other creators can’t. Yes we see them act like fools with their trash takes in the podcast and after dark, but man, his personality and talent when delivering his essays have only gone up over the years. He has the eloquence of a poet who likes talking about anime titties who can make you cry from laughing too much or ugly cry from the way he talks about anime. I only have respect and admiration for THE Anime Zone.
I wonder if Connor has watched The Legend of Vox Machina. I feel like he’d REALLY enjoy it, what with it being an absolute banger anime-adjacent show in a medieval fantasy world
Love the topical episode! Would love to see these episodes a little more often (but of course if convenient to y'all sched). This also solidified my actions on streaming too thanks to the boys' inputs and takes!
Commenting on the Lord of the Coast in the OP Live Action. It looks plainly scary in the live action like any sea monster you'd imagine in your nightmares, but it doesn't really look the same kind of scary in the anime or the manga. Sea Kings usually have a more comical cartoonish face and the fear they're meant to instill is just on their massive size and some of them also have big smiles and crazy eyes like that monster from Madoka Magica. The Lord of the Coast in the manga looks like a grumpy old sailor
We know that Connor mentions he's using fb to talk to his family and peers but this is genuinely wholesome, Connor is enjoying Slice of Life unconsciously.
Connor only enjoys "real life slice of life". otherwise he would probabl react to th genre with a "why am i watching it when i could just do it myself in real life?"

TH-cam is more like old TV than people think. In the early days of TV, shows had only one sponsor and the stars would pause during the show to give an ad read to the camera. It's fascinating how we've come all the way back around.
It would honestly be pretty cool if they could get Matt Owens (One Piece Live Action Showrunner) on to this podcast, it would honestly be a fun seeing them discuss about the ins and outs from these past 3-6 years for the live action

Not everyone cares about hiden meaning and what they are supposed to represent according to the writers. If he doesn't like something he doesn't like it simple as that.
I have low expectations for the One Piece live action, but the main cast looks so perfect in their roles and genuinely tight-knit as a friend group that I'm just looking forward to seeing their chemistry.
Alice in Borderland live action adaption was really really good, so I can’t say they all suck. Theres definitely potential for these adaptions to succeed and Alice in Borderland proved that.
What Garnt was explaining about the Three Body Problem is more a plot point rather than a synopsis, which is probably a good thing because it is WAY better going in blind. Best way to describe it is conspiracy and existential horror without giving anything away. Go read it!
you cant win with anime fans. if you adapt it exactly, they'll call it cringey. if you ground it to reality, they'll call it unfaithful. that's the downside of having a 2D waifu.
The only time I listen to TH-cam recommendations, is when I'm watching you tube on tv. Most of the time I will immediately go into my subscriptions to watch someone specific, I go to history, or I search for the topic I'm curious about.

It's like 24/7 people are shouting tik tok trends or watching or making tik tok videos. And I never use Snapchat. It hit my soul when someone my age said WhatsApp is for old people cos WhatsApp is what I use
Between Spiderman and Batman, I like Batman more not because of relativity but because of the stories and what Connor and Joey has said (the set, characters, and lore to name a few), being more interesting to me. I like the cartoons, games and the comics (some of the alternate universe stories are amazing). I enjoy the movies ngl, especially the animated ones. The only Endgame I love is the Batman: Endgame by Scott Snyder (not Zack Snyder), tbh I love his batman run, probably one of my favorites. As a dc fan, I'm so confused why they can't adapt the stories the way the animated ones does. Tbh, hearing their discussion really shows me how influential movies are in creating the public perception towards dc and marvel cause ngl some of the characters do not act like that in the comics at first but the moment it blows up, the character's personality is altered to match what the casual fans liked. Harley Quinn is one of those characters, where istg she became like a female version of deadpool with how much the character does a 4th wall break in the comics when it was not part of her character at all. As a dc fan, I've seen the divide in the Harley Quinn fans. The whole batfam being unkown to the casual fans or the fact that there are multiple flash and Green Lantern. These comic characters has decades of stories so I get why people won't know all but why can't the live action movies atleast show the core aspect of these stories/characters like Superman being hopeful (the lighthearted boy scout who grew up in kansas who does good things and has humanity) or Batman being more detective and serious (can I just say that Batman does have humor, it's just usually very dry and are mostly a witty one line joke/comment.)
As a TH-cam only enjoyer, I'd love to hear what the appeal of Twitch is. The most interesting content in Twitch comes to TH-cam without any of the boring moments, so I really don't understand.
The one piece fans that are toxic are the new kids. Tik tok op fans. The ogs like you and myself are chill. I watch all the main streams bleach, op, db, Naruto. I think they are all good
Comic books were successful when it came to live action movies. I just think anime is tougher to adapt that into live action with its unique art style and fictional worlds.
I think the thing that made comic book movies like the MCU so successful is that comic books were in themselves a shared universe. It was totally plausible for the MCU to just go in its own direction as long as the characters were even remotely faithful. In contrast, there isn't really a gargantuan shared universe in anime.
@@NateROCKS112no the thing is they tried and failed and slowly improved throughout decades and dozens of movies From Adam West to Christian Bale it took a colossal amount of work Anime is still a few decades 1 or 2 removed from their own Adam West era
@@NateROCKS112 also, comic books are used to just get "sanitized and filtered to a mainstream media". it is rare to see comic book films and shows that flat out embrace half of the weirdness of comicbooks. and when they do go all out, it can be good or bad. just look at quantumania adapting MODOK. everyone complained, but, it is a miracle they made MODOK remotely work (even if poorly) outside an animated show. usually only animated films have been able to deep into half of the comic book insanity. and most of them are sent straight to DVD / streaming anime is sooo weird, that, by the time you manaed to filter it enough to be a live action product, it feels like you changed it too much (like edge of tomorrow, keeping the main idea, but changing so much)
Also, live-action adaptations have a hugely different types of audience expectations. There are people who appreciate how they change things from the anime to fit better with the live-action looks. But there are also a huge number of younger fans who hate that Ussopp doesn't have a weird long nose or Sanji doesn't have the spiral eyebrows or Zoro doesn't have mint green hair. I agree that you shouldn't be directly replicating anime character designs . But there are a huge number of people who want it to look exactly like the manga/anime and this dicoromy among the fans itself is the biggest problem of live-action adaptations
Yoooooooo! Love to see Three-Body Problem getting some love. It was my first sci-fi book I read and the ideas and human politics it tackled hooked onto the entire genre of sci-fi. The sequels are even better.

1:06:44, Garnt is describing poetics! It's a term we use in the breakdown and dyeing of costuming to describe the small and subtle aspects of costume that convey world building and tone of the story. In cosplay, we'd just call it weathering/battle damage. Imagine if a character falls on the asphalt ground, how strange would it be if there's grass stains? It's all in the continuity!
My real gripe with people saying they don't like a thing just cause it's popular is they have no actual opinions on it for why they don't like or do like something. "Always the same 3 responses. "I don't want to watch it cause X" "I won't watch it because I don't care" or "that's that popular thing isn't it"
usually because popular things are made to cast a very wide net and so inherently won't have anything too weird or interesting as to not offend people, so people into weird and interesting stuff just don't bother with them most of the time
There's a whole season of Three-Body Problem Chinese TV series already released on Viki made by Tencent, it was great! Very faithful to the book. Now I'm kinda curious on the Netflix version, I do not expect it to be a faithful adaptation judging from all the information we get, also the first book is very Chinese centric so it's not gonna be the same as adapting a Western book, because the writing style and ideology were from a different culture.
Garnt mentions Into the Spiderverse's animation gave him the same feeling as the first time he saw the Matrix. That's interesting because about three weeks ago. Jeremy Jahns said the same thing, during his Across the Spiderverse Review. Either these two were sharing a braincell with a three week lag. Or Garnt is also a fan of Jeremy Jahns. 🤔🤔🤔

I'm about to finally finish wheel of time and man there are few fantasy experiences better than spending probably 300 hours in a world, able to learn about the intricacies of the world, fantasy shows or movies will literally never compare to that feeling honestly. That being said I am still excited for any potential Brandon Sanderson adaptations just gotta hope and pray it doesn't turn out like how they butchered Wheel of Time as a TV show.
The Final Empire would make an amazing series if done right 😩
@@PointlessRantz started The Wheel of Time a couple of weeks ago and am halfway through The Great Hunt atm. Really enjoying it so far. Book 2 is already an improvement from book 1 I think. I know some people say it’s one of the best things ever and I don’t doubt them but so far it’s just pretty good to great for me. When did it become amazing to you? (No spoilers ofc). I feel like I’ll end up feeling the same way as I read more of the series but was actually interested in hearing from other people.
Monster really needs a live action tv-show, Del Toro wanted to do it, please any studios give him money. Also LoGH can be made with the present technology, pay the Battle Star Galactica team to do it.
I always thought LoGH can become a great live action, I saw a news article apparently a Chinese company that has rights for it has been in the process of making a tv series (it's own by a guy who loves LoGH so much that he brought the rights just to stream it for free for people.)

I can't stop laughing at 52:55 when Connor is dead staring at Garnt fidgeting the fans. It's so random lmao
Npc behaviour
Its that subway surfer brain, mlnke reacts to any stimulus
Omg this is the best, he starts at like 52:43 so he holds that stare for a hot minute
me watching the boys fidget every episode
1:36:47
This commentary from Connor remind me of the tragedy of King Arthur and the Legend of the Sword.
Are you talking about the one from 2017?
@@ElricZ yep that one with Charlie Hunnam
@danielvalverde63 Oh okay,
Yeah My mom loves that one and from what little I have seen from it, It was pretty decent, I'm really surprised they didn't continue with that and make more
I can't take that movie seriously, the modern costume drip is so ass and jarring
Yeh looks like the entertainment industry math doesn't work
it happened due to sony's marketting of the movie
It's luck on top of luck
Ive heard the OP trailer was finished a while ago so I have some hope the show looks a bit more polished upon release. That said, I do like the overall feel of the teaser! I've been reading OP so long the drawn versions of them are engrained in my head and its hard for me to look at it from the perspective of someone who hasnt even heard of OP before.
If it does break the anime live action mold and blows up worldwide I'll be stoked! The story built from the characters definitely kept me reading so even if it looks a little weird, it could still be captivating!
I think the issue with most live action is that they try to hard to stick to the anime style but in live action, anime and live action are different mediums and live action needs to play to its own strengths instead of just trying to carbon copy the anime
very true, and then the fanboys flip the fuck out when you change anything lol.
Yes, that's what I always said. They should just give the script to a good movie director/producer or something and don't let them see the anime
@@rayneman6549 EXACTLY. It's these fans that are pushing live-action behind
I’m hoping that thumbnail ages poorly and the One Piece live action turns out to be amazing
I really hope they do a lot more of these more frequently going forward. This was incredible
At this point, I think Connor just subconsciously hates MARVEL stuff irrationally. He sees it is somehow realted to it, instant hate
I love the fact that a Batman Isekai does exist. Samurai Batman existence is so odd.
He's great and well rounded!!
It's very funny to hear what the boys think about D&D. I think they should have a special where they play or watch one of the old movies or TV shows
I wonder if Connor has watched The Legend of Vox Machina. I feel like he’d REALLY enjoy it, what with it being an absolute banger anime-adjacent show in a medieval fantasy world
They should sll play the old capcom game

There are good live action base on anime and/or manga.
I heard they called it J-Drama or Tokusatsu or somthing.
As a TH-cam only enjoyer, I'd love to hear what the appeal of Twitch is. The most interesting content in Twitch comes to TH-cam without any of the boring moments, so I really don't understand.

@@NateROCKS112no the thing is they tried and failed and slowly improved throughout decades and dozens of movies

it is rare to see comic book films and shows that flat out embrace half of the weirdness of comicbooks. and when they do go all out, it can be good or bad. just look at quantumania adapting MODOK. everyone complained, but, it is a miracle they made MODOK remotely work (even if poorly) outside an animated show.
usually only animated films have been able to deep into half of the comic book insanity. and most of them are sent straight to DVD / streaming
anime is sooo weird, that, by the time you manaed to filter it enough to be a live action product, it feels like you changed it too much (like edge of tomorrow, keeping the main idea, but changing so much)
what connor is saying about going on the neighbourhood facebook groups and seeing the drama is so real. i feel less alone
I genuinely miss when every superhero film was in its own contained universe
Also, live-action adaptations have a hugely different types of audience expectations. There are people who appreciate how they change things from the anime to fit better with the live-action looks. But there are also a huge number of younger fans who hate that Ussopp doesn't have a weird long nose or Sanji doesn't have the spiral eyebrows or Zoro doesn't have mint green hair.
I agree that you shouldn't be directly replicating anime character designs . But there are a huge number of people who want it to look exactly like the manga/anime and this dicoromy among the fans itself is the biggest problem of live-action adaptations
