Daekwon Da Prophet what people always overlook is that in order to be funny you really need A LOT of talent. People don't take comics seriously because it doesn't seem hard because it's light and fun, but it is. To be dramatic usually takes you to a darker place so people notice a dramatic performance more. But people need to remember that funny people turn excellent dramatic performances, but not a lot of dramatic actors can be funny.

Such a well deserved win 👏 She was terrifying in this movie. She transformed into a whole different person. From the little things like the scene with her in front of the TV dancing in her leotard thingy, combing her wig, to the final scene where she admits to letting her man abuse her baby. Its such a strong ass, unforgettable performance. Nobody else could've done it like she did.

I don't know how to feel watching this. At the time this movie was out, I wondered aloud to a friend how Mo'Nique, a comedienne, could so become the awful woman that this character was. His response was that many comedians became so from a place of pain - laughter through tears, basically. Now, to have Robin Williams, one of the funniest people ever, have taken his life, just brings that conversation back. Breaks my heart.

I don't care what they say about her not playing the politics game and all that like COME ON isn't this BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE... a performance in a movie? Like God Mo'Nique was so amazing in Precious I knew when I saw her bits on the trailer she'd be Oscar material. I am still so happy Mo'Nique won the Oscar because like hello, she deserves it!

so eloquently put. That final scene is what earned her the oscar. While she is the antagonist of the film, you can't help but pity her for the abuse she also suffered from having made a poor decision to be with the kind of man that would turn out to be precious' father. All the while, it is still her own fault as she was an adult that was supposed to be making adult decisions. And because she refused to do so, her daughter suffered even worse than she did. All this captured in one scene! Bravo!

I just don’t know what to make of the way Hollywood has treated her. You hear all this talk about her difficulty and her attitude, but it seems to me she’s simply an extraordinarily talented woman who knows her worth and demands it to be recognized and compensated. There’s nothing whatsoever wrong with that. I hate that we’ve missed a decade or more of her onscreen, and I hope we see so much more of her in the future.

I think people who are only equating her comment about "politics" to mean race is short-changing her message. Don't forget that a lot of Oscar season involves actors schmoozing in Hollywood to get a nomination (making sure your film is seen and has buzz to carry it over for three months) and once you get a nomination, you have to do all the publicity rounds and behind-the-scenes type of networking in order to "win favor" with a lot Hollywood who also happen to be members of the Academy. A lot of people have spoken about it. In this particular year, Mo'Nique refused to campaign for an Oscar and wanted it to only be about voters picking the performance they liked best. So, when she talked about "politics" she was really talking about that. Of course race does play as some movies need more campaigning than others and some films are simply going to be seen by more members based on their tastes which can be shaped by their own life experiences and what resonates with them. Look at the Academy demographic (race, gender, age, socio status, geography, industry) and you'll see what movies tend to be up their alley.

In total, eleven black women have won acting Oscars. Nine have won for Best Supporting Actress: Hattie McDaniel, Whoopi Goldberg, Jennifer Hudson, Mo'Nique, Octavia Spencer, Lupita Nyong'o, Viola Davis, Regina King, Ariana DeBose and Da'vine Joy Randolph. And only one won (Halle Berry) for Best Actress. That's gotta change!

This was the best speech ever in the Oscars; so true and that was one well-deserved award. And I also love that no one understood what Mo'Nique meant when she said «It can be about the performance and not the politics». Everyone thought she was talking about racism, when in fact she was talking about how Academy always gives the Oscar for the actress who campaigns hardest for the award and has the best publicity.

She speaks with such intelligence and that's not something I hardly ever pick up on her when she was in movies before Precious.
