I change the oil every 5,000 miles regardless of time. i started the car out on 5W-20 synthetic oil but when Honda started recommending 0W-20 oil I switched to it. No issues, those actually on 0w16 work two centigrades cooler than 5w30 oil on the same engines. I do not race, cruising at 70 mph on a 37 centigrades highway oil stays at 95-96 centigrades. By the way this are two similar Toyota engines, 2.5 liters on Rav4 and Camry, both 2019 models. Both same oil history, both same results. Mobil1 0w16 has been the only brand that sells 0w16 in Mexico.
      Mobil 1 0w16, compared to Toyota 0w16 oil are very similar, with the exception of Molybdenum, that Toyota oil comes with 755 ppm of Molybdenum vs Mobil 1 that registers only 81 ppm of same antifriction aditive Molybdenum. My last change has been pouring half can of liquimoly Ceratec to add Molybdenum and reach around 300 ppm of Molybdenum, my BlueDriver device test shows same working temperature but engines definetively rev faster with 150 ml of Ceratec into each one.

    My Toyota manuals also gives me a choice of oil weights to use depending on the temperature of the region. Here it goes below freezing once or twice a year. But rarely below 5 Celcius. And day time temps can easily be above 30 Celcius most summer days. So I use the thicker reccomendations

  • @KendrasEdge757
    @KendrasEdge757 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    I say one should use what oil the manufacturer recommends. My 1GR-FE in my 2021 4Runner TRD ORP calls for 0W20 so that’s what I’ll use. 0W20 is full synthetic anyways, but I’ll probably just keep using Toyota 0W20 oil. There’s small orifices and channels that require a 0W20 oil and you can get into some trouble switching to a thicker oil. Also DON’T go 10k miles on an oil change as they recommend, change it every 6mos or 3k-5k miles. Great video brother!!

    • @AEVMU
      @AEVMU ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Except you are wrong about the oil orifices requiring 0w-20. Your same engine in other countries is allowed up to a 0w-30 or 5w-30 and it's the exact same engine. Most engine (not all) that specify a 0w-20 can go a grade higher a be fine. My owners manual specifies in writing that a 5w-30 is allowable despite a 0w-16 being reccomended for mpg and nothing else.

    • @KendrasEdge757
      @KendrasEdge757 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@AEVMU no, not wrong. I said you CAN get into some trouble switching to a thicker oil. Doesn’t mean you will have any problems, but that it’s possible. You certainly can. Using a thicker oil and the owner listens to the incorrect advice and changes it every 10k miles, the oil gets dirty, it’s thicker, and smaller channels can get blocked up limiting oil being allowed to flow freely to other areas of the engine. It most certainly happens. Furthermore I said one should use what the manufacturer recommends. If they recommend something different in a different country than so be it, use that, but that doesn’t just mean that you can use said oil everywhere. Some manufacturers have slight differences in the engines in different countries. Typically that’s just things like emissions equipment either having it or not, but they don’t always tell us what’s different. The weights of oil recommended by the manufacturer has some to do with the engine internals, but slightly more to do with the climate the engine will be sold in. Such as a truck in South Africa or a truck in Alaska will have different weight oils recommended by the manufacturer.

    • @AEVMU
      @AEVMU ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@KendrasEdge757 The oil orifices do not require a 0w-20. That is 100% wrong. If that engine can take thicker oil in any country, then the oil orifices can take a thicker oil period. ALL oil is too thick when cold anyway, even a 0w-8 is thicker when cold than a 15w-50 when hot, If oil orifices needed a 0w-20 than they would all fail when cold and all the oil would end up in the top end. Plus many 30 weight oils are thinner than many 20 weight oils when only 10c hotter and vice versa. Going up a half grade or a full grade is not going to negatively affect an engine except if you go too thin (0w-16 or below) in an engine not designed for it. Even my 2022 Corolla hybrid (Prius engine) owners manual, which is ''recommended'' to use 0w-16, specifically says a 5w-30 may provide better protection and is allowed. Cats get clogged due to the composition of the oil, not the viscosity and VVTI gears are perfectly fine with going up a grade as well, otherwise they would throw a code when 10c cooler than ideal operating temp, and yes, your engine will vary that much in temp depending on use/terrain. 0w-20 is recommended because in the US Toyota can't recommend anything other than what it was certified for, and mpg is part of the certification.

      @@nicholasroberts9618 manuals say different specs in different areas of the country is my understanding. Whether you’re in northeast or southwest I’d imagine would recommend different viscosities of oil. For example, I’m in southeast area and this is copied from my manual:
      8-1 Specifications: page 523
      • Engine oil selection
      "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota approved "Toyota Genuine Motor Oil" or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity.
      Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil
      Recommended viscosity: SAE OW-20
      SAE OW-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather.
      If SAE OW-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE OW-20 at the next oil change.
      • The OW in OW-20 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils with a lower value before the W allow for easier starting of the engine in cold weather.
      • The 20 in OW-20 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the oil when the oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions.
      One should stick with what their manual recommends.

    In my country, Pakistan, Toyota recommends various viscosities ranging from 5w30 to 5w-50 for different ambient temperatures for the 2ZR-FE powered Corolla. This engine is still being offered in the Corolla here. 5w30 is filled from the factory. Since it is quite hot in the summers here, the Toyota manual for the corolla recommends 5w30 in winters and 10w30 in summers. 10w40 and 5w50 are recommended for extremely hot regions and/or for older engines. 0w20 is recommended as an all year round oil for hybrids only. I know, in the U.S., 0w20 is recommended for the 2ZR-FE. There have been reported 2ZR-FE failures using the 0w20 in the scorching 50C heat south of my country. I've been using 5w30 in winters and 10w30 in summers as per the Owner's manual recommendation, and never faced any problem. Over here, we use kms. I change the oil every 5000 kms or 6 months, which ever comes first. My corolla has accumulated 2,57000 kms and the engine still runs great. The car has undergone suspension work, though, but that is another story.

    Before I saw this post, I’ve been hearing more about modern engines and oil consumption.
    Knowing that manufacturers engineers are driven by satisfying epa fuel goals, it’s not hard to figure out why the recommend 20 instead of 30 viscosity for less ring drag.
    I immediately switched to 30 viscosity because not on,y does it provide a better ring seal, it doesn’t evaporate as quickly and the better ring seal reduces unspent fuel from passing the rings and contaminating the crankcase oil.
    30 weight will maintain it’s viscosity longer too.
    Change synthetic at 5,000 or less and you’ll burn less oil and increase the life of your engine.

    Back in the early 2000s, Toyotas and VWs were through a sludging problem they commonly referred to as “gelling”. Toyota went to a full synthetic engine oil back in due to their VVTI systems and requiring thinner oils. They went to a 5W-30 and increased the frequency of the engine oil changes to 5000 miles. VW had BG make their engine oil that came with BG MOA. Much of those gelling issues began to disappear. IMO engine issues will increase by extending the engine oil change intervals. I still used BG EPR every 30,000 miles on all cars I service. I still recommend a 5,000 interval and the manufacturers engine oil recommendations.

    I've never liked the fact that oils are getting so thin, and now it's down to 0w-8 which is crazy. I have 7 Toyotas and many of them use 0w-20 but I've always felt odd about using it in a turbocharged car. I own a 2023 GR Corolla which calls for 0w-20 but I've always wondered about 0w-30 or 5w-30 as I don't live in an area with brutally cold temps. Even in the winter it gets down into the 25F area only rarely and my cars are garaged where the temps will be warmer. I have used 5w-30 and I currently have 0w-30 Amsoil in my 2009 Corolla S that I turbocharged. I didn't really hear you talk about 0w-30 as being a good option.
    On another note, I hate the way Toyota and other manufacturers push the 10k mi,e oil change interval. It shows that it's for normal driving but only a small number of people would qualify as around 98% of drivers would fall into the severe category which calls for 5k mile oil change intervals. But do owners do this? Not most of them. Oil is cheap, engines are not. Don't even get me started about transmissions!

      In some engines with low-tension rings, a higher viscosity oil can increase oil usage. The low tension rings ride up on the more viscous film of oil, allowing that film of oil to enter the combustion area. Same way a lighter car will hydroplane more easily than a heavier car, assuming identical tires.

    • @imzjustplayin
      @imzjustplayin ปีที่แล้ว

      lighter cars aren't any more likely to hydroplane compared with a heavier car. Hydroplaning has to do with evacuation of water from under the tires more than anything. Insufficient tread depth and driving too fast is guaranteed way to hydroplane in any vehicle regardless of weight. Just remember, container ships float and they're in the thousands of tons. Oil control rings gumming up is more of design issue with them being low tension and pistons not providing sufficient cooling which allows them to gum up due to the high piston temperatures. The higher the spot temperatures in the engine, the more likely the oil will burn and carbonize in the ring landings especially if it's a thinner oil. Low viscosity oils are mostly for moderate to cold climate cold start benefits. There are no fuel economy benefits with thin oil when the ambient temperature is above 95F because the viscosity of these oils is at most 15 centistokes less than the thickest oil. 0W-16 vs 5W-50. The biggest difference between the oils is when cold or warm which are in the thousands or hundreds of centistokes respectively. Using a PAO oil such as the Mobil 1 European formula 0W-40 or Castrol Syntec 0W-40 or the Amsoil reduces oil consumption if there is any by half. "fake synethic" as the video author has alluded to is something specific to synthetic oil sold in the USA because European oil needs to be a PAO oil to be considered "synthetic" while in the USA, it just has to have additional processing done to it. @@Resistculturaldecline

    5w-30 will absolutely not cause cam phaser issues. Cold 0w-20 is thicker than warm 5w-30. So you would have cam phaser issues when the engine was cold and this is not the case. Toyota went to 0w-20 so that they could claim a slight increase in fuel economy due to the thinner oil causing less drag on the engine. In normal driving conditions a slight increase or even decrease in viscosity will have no detrimental effects. Oils can actually thin or thicken during an oil change interval on their own. I like this channel and the guy gives great info most of the time.

      Yes! At 5:01 of the video you say, “Modern Toyota engines with variable valve timing need thinner oil otherwise cam phaser issue will be a common thing”. Which I agree with if you go drastically out of grade; however, the difference in a quality synthetic 5w-30 and a 0w-20 will not cause an issue. I’m not trying to get on your case, I have learned a lot from your videos and you definitely know more about these engines than I probably ever will. Oil weight is simple. The first number is how thick it is when the engine is cold. The second number is how thick it is when the engine is hot. When a engine has 200k miles on it the rings, cylinders, and bearings are worn out and have more space between them. You want thick oil so it can fill in the gap and keep a good coating of lubrication. Stay with 5w30 and if you see the oil pressure is low you could try 5w40 but prepare for a engine rebuild soon.

    I have a Mitsubishi outlander, my recommended oil is 0w20 in the owners manual but the manual also states that I need to use the proper thickness oil for the temperature were I am driving. I live in Texas and the temperature reaches above 100 degree Fahrenheit. How high can I go in the viscosity or 0w20 ok for hot temperatures?

    Hi there. My wife's 2011 v6 rav 4 calls for a 5w30, and i'm thinking about using 0W20 instead. My 2012 highlander v6 has the same engine and according to the manual is should only use Ow20. Would you agree with me if I use OW20 for both vehicles? I live somewhere in Alberta Canada (cold winters and warm summers)

    I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey that says on the oil cap 5w-20. I would like to to use 5w-30, but I heard it would damage the variable valve system if I use a higher viscosity than a 20 weight oil. Friend, I’m moving down to South Carolina this month it doesn’t get below freezing in the winter. I really despise using the zero20 you study a lot more than me well I hurt the VTEC System if I use 5/30 oil full synthetic I change it every 4000 miles, I can’t understand how people get sucked into changing the oil every 10,000 miles or the Fram oil filter every 20,000 miles, 2013 was the last year they built a good car then they realize the cars last too long so they’re trying to make it so we have to buy into it

      When I drove over 20,000 miles a year, I did a 15k mile OCI with full synthetics, as I only get 3 months of decent weather. Did that for 10 years with no problems. They were 80s Dodge turbos and they did fine. A GDI is probably not safe for that, fuel oil dillution, and todays cars have low tension piston rings, so I probably don't do that with modern cars. I also no longer drive that many miles per year.
