  • We examine the Artificial Intelligence (AI) of the Halo, Star Wars, Mass Effect and the Culture Universes on today's episode of Sci-Fi factions compared!
    We're going to look at, specifically, the Droids of Star Wars Legends Lore, the Forerunner AI (or ancilla) of Halo Lore, the Reapers of Mass Effect, and the Minds of the Culture.

    I just wanna drop this quote from the IsoDidact about the only Precursor AI we have seen in the Halo universe. This AI was named Abaddon.
    "He now realized that it was a Precursor's version of an ancilla-one as far beyond those of the Forerunners as a keyship was to a wooden raft."
    - IsoDidact on Abaddon

      If they every decide to write about the precursors the way that greg bear wrote the forerunner sage then Halo most likely moves up beyond the rankings of the Culture.

    If I remember the Leviathan DLC correctly from ME3, the Reapers were designed to only purge the Milky Way by their creators. Once they reached the level of technology that allowed them to pretty flawlessly annihilate the most advanced species every cycle, they basically went on autopilot. No doubt had they succeeded against Shepard, they might have made some changes to their process in the next cycle.

    • @xenon8117
      @xenon8117 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      ttlpwn34 Exactly, the Reapers were created for a purpose, not to keep advancing and go to other galaxies so it's not really a fair criticism.

    • @adamharvey8444
      @adamharvey8444 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes and no. The leviathans designed the reapers to ‘save’ the lesser races from creating and then fighting synthetics. The reapers solution was to purge the galaxy every 50,000 years, the reason being that synthetics would rise up and destroy their masters (which of course the reapers did themselves)

    • @swa5026
      @swa5026 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Reaper's harvest is basically shooting fish in a barrel. While they had to work hard to harvest the Leviathan since that cycle they would only allow civilization to progress to a point they can still be easily beaten. Over time they let too much to be known, yes leaving enough for the next civilization to have someone to attribute the mass relays and Citadel is helpful but letting them leave clues to a superweapon that can wipe out the reapers is a problem.

    • @capnsus1100
      @capnsus1100 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In all honesty, the Reapers are kinda similar to the flood: they take living creatures and use them to add to their own numbers. If Shepard and his crew did not stop the Collectors (an indoctrinated race from the previous cycle), there would have been a human reaper, and likely also an asari, turian, salarian, krogan, batarian, and whatever other species im forgetting about

In the Grimdarkness of the Far Future there is more than just War, there is real people too. That and everything is shades of grey. Nothing is *truly* black or white. The Imperium gets shat on by having both a shit economy, a shitty type of ftl, and shitty governing.
      The Empire is corrupted beyond belief and it's almsot entirely too easy to just steal some shit from somewhere or you know have a star destroyer show up and just park itself on a crowd of people.
      The UNSC actually doesn't have that many problems other than space pirates but they are stopped by the UNSC navy almost all the time.
      The Federation just sucks lol it really just sucks and has such a low population it's amazing it even has an economy.

      To add to this (a little late I suppose), majority of a mind is situated in hyperspace, and when this part of them is removed from hyperspace, they can still stack the entirety of their consciousness inside of them, with the only problem being that they lose their personality (or something along those lines, it’s been a while since I’ve read a culture book) during it. Pretty sure this is found in consider Phlebas with the occasional segments featuring the mind.

    What kinda breaks my heart about this and I'm sure it was mentioned, the Reapers were originally written for another purpose but due to a leak of Mass Effect 3's information or something, they altered the story highly (as I understand it). The reapers were originally harvesting races in order to try and figure out a looming threat of some kind of dark energy that was causing stars to collapse. I'm SEVERELY paraphrasing here, but I'm pretty sure that was said somewhere- and it gives them more of an altruistic, neutral vibe than what we got. I know all stories go through many iterations before settling into a single canon, but this one is very notable because what they went with completely changes their nature and also disregards foreshadowing from the previous games (in my opinion.) Feel free to tell me I'm wrong, it has been what- almost a decade? Since I was a Mass Effect NUT! lmao

    I really enjoyed this video. And the addition of the Culture was pretty neat, too. Although I have to say, I think why the Reapers seem to be stagnant isn't necessarily a flaw, or at least not one they haven't accounted for. They are, after all, performing a massive experiment on the universe, and when performing an experiment, you want to try to eliminate as many variables as possible. One variable might be the Reaper's own technological level, so they may be maintaining it at a certain level to act as a bit of a control, or a consistent foundation. Regardless, great video!

      Edit:
      Orks would win with Krogans.
      Simply because the more Orks You kill the more of them will come.

      Necrons can't reproduce, they're robots. The Prometheans Watchers can resurrect destroyed Prometheans, also the Crawlers, Watchers, and Soldiers are true AI, so they can be replaced with ease. I bet the Prometheans have a device for containing energy, and the C'tan are living energy. Halo has Gauss cannons, and the Prometheans can use them.
      As for the Orks, remember that Krogan also reproduce at a high rate, and the Krogan are smarter.

This special droid has a personality it can control other droids and order them do things. It can also activative defensive weapons , it can send other messages to other droids and to organics , it uses Tactics, It learns and studies, it knows how to use Technology, it can upgrade systems Upgrade weapons and do other things. It can be adaptive to learning. The AI on this thing is one of the most advanced in Starwars during the Old Republic. And the citadel and the original Reapers were built by an organic race.
    "I create nothing. I bring Nothing. I succor only destruction."

    • @dungeonguy88
      @dungeonguy88 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the key issue with the Reapers. They don't care about anything other than their assigned goal. And because they don't need to advance, develop, improve or expand upon how they reap the galaxy in their cycles, they don't.
      The Reapers themselves, given their scope and the time they've had, could be top contenders among Sci-Fi AIs. They just don't see any point in doing so.

Also not all minds are equal, though any mind could become more. Then there are drones which would be human like. I think in one book he had an intelligence scale, but beyond the drones it becomes irrelevant compared to the quantum computing General System Vehicles. Author was way ahead of his time. I still remember how the GSV's had force fields because of their height and the pressure would get to high or low, he just seemed to think about everything. Regarding the Reapers, it shouldn't be hard to know why they haven't advanced. Their entire purpose is essentially to be the managers of a millennia long experiment by The Catalyst to find a solution to the original problem it was presented with (finding a way to prevent synthetics from destroying their organic creators). Thus, they are inherently limited by their original directive. I think the Geth would have been a better candidate, or even EDI, as these were allowed to develop on their own, and in different paths.

    Important point, if a Culture mind wants to be a literal god they can do that. They just start up a simulation of a universe so perfect that this could actually be one right now and mess with it on as large or as small of a scale as they want all while they have countless copies running in tandem so they can mess around with different choices and the like. Consider how much processing power it would require to perfectly simulate every last bit of data that makes up our universe.
    As they do this they also have the time to care for their meat bags, fulfilling their every little want and desire within socially acceptable bounds, run the enormously complex ring-worlds, craft-worlds or other ships that make up their bodies, ensuring their galaxy spanning 'government' continues to run smoothly and cracking every little question about the universe that is left for them to solve.

    • @benwhiley9680
      @benwhiley9680 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, this is actually dealt with in one of the books - they actually have a moral duty when creating their simulations to not make them too accurate/Real because they essentially become indistinguishable from reality lifeforms.

      Orks don't have a nervous system like any other organic being. infact all their organs are fluid in a fungal sack plus when an ork dies they release spores which in turn create more orks. Flood require a nervous system to infect and if it's not there or damaged in some way then they can't infect you. Just like the flood orks get more and more dangerous as they grow in number and unlike the flood we have seen they create ships, weapons, vehicles that shouldn't work at all but do any way.

    Hey Eck, my main proposition for a future video is more of an idea for a new series; but before we talk about that i wanted to ask you a lore/science based question. I know there are ion cannons in the star wars universe but my limited knowledge an I have never heard of or know if its even possible to ionize a turbo laser shot. I on occasion like to design capital ships and some of my designs have a axial super heavy turbo laser. I was wondering if its grounded in the star wars universe to ionize the axial turbo laser shot either before or after it leaves the barrel. I'm having a lot of fun making these ship and your videos help me find weaknesses and balance in my ships. I really don't want to design anymore around a axial ionized turbo laser if it isn't even possible. Please let me know in the comments if you have heard of anything like that or if you believe it would be possible in the star wars universe.
    My idea for a new video would revolve around large battles conveyed beautifully with your majestic voice and amazing story telling abilities. The series would consist of an iconic "supercapital" ship like the eclipse or the executor with a small escort fleet battling it out to the death with a second fleet with a make up strong enough to give it a run for its money. The fleet make up and size would be completely up to you; whatever you feel stands a chance against the super's. I think this could work with your current series, star ship verses, or as somewhat of a stand alone. Super Capital ships are one of my favorite aspects of the star wars universe and a combination of your knowledge, enthusiasm, voice, and story telling capabilities would make for an amazing few videos. That said, everything I've watched that you've made so far I've loved; keep up the amazing work!
    P.S. I loved both episodes of the "after Endor" series and would love to see them return. You are an amazing story teller!

      Brad Deremer well he's on the death star and they could probably destroy the star destroyer from the inside but not from the outside and the death star even from the inside they'd fail cuz the numbers r too much and the tech star has in the death star is far more advanced than halo

    Some quick info about AI capability in the Star Wars universe
    Iokath was a massive artificial sphere constructed around a star located in the Unknown Regions by a technologically advanced species at some point before the Manderon Period. Every orbital body in the system was demolished and salvaged for core elements, from which an impervious habitat for the species was constructed, using all of it star's energy output. The species of weapon designers created many technological wonders such as the Gravestone, the Eternal Fleet, the GEMINI droids, SCORPIO and the Old Gods, using their superweapons on dozens of different worlds for live testing. When a civil war broke on Iokath, both sides began using their superweapons against each other, which led the engineers to drive many of their creations into Wild Space with their memory cores locked. However, that did not save them, as the Six Gods were unleashed on Iokath, eradicating all organic life on it and leaving a single self-aware droid known as ARIES to reshape the world in his image. Few visitors that found Iokath over the centuries were all killed by ARIES in brutal tests, until many new arrivals came to Iokath around 3631 BBY, in the middle of the revolt against the Eternal Empire of Zakuul by the Alliance.
    If star wars AI seems stunted it is by design through restraining bolts and regular memory wipes to prevent rouge AI

    Suggestion: What if the CIS won the Clone Wars and were around and did not demilitarize by the point when the Yuuzhan Vong Invaded?

      @@temiajuwon8893 While they certainly weren't the most powerful, they are my personal favorite portrayal of A.I. in any sci-fi series. Because they were so flawed like their creators, and thus had a stronger impression of free will.

    The others are insignificant when comared to Culture Minds which can “ascend”.
    You really are wrong saying they they only “edge it”. Their minds operate in another dimension to cope with the instantaneous speed. They are intelligence and far beyond the term “artificial”

    I prefer the Star wars A.I, they are so varied. There are the C-3PO's of the galaxy which are very human, then there are the others that are very robotic. But no matter what they aren't these "gods" that just do the best, they are flawed, and If was going to have to be in a universe with an A.I i would hope for it to be like star wars.

    The Reapers stagnated despite consuming thousands of galaxies of species precisely by the very method that they were able to conquer (and I think it's one of the more interesting aspects of the Mass Effect setting) : They ruins left behind directed the development of ALL technology along a certain path, their path. So once a species developed spaceflight and discovered ruins on a nearby planet, they were essentially locked into a way of thinking, using Mass Effect based technology, and had little reason to develop away from that. Even the supposed way to defeat the Reapers, the Crucible, was ultimately just part of the plan.

    Video Idea: Which Sci-Fi Faction has the best Gate Travel? Star Wars Hypergates, Lantian Stargates (SG-1) Iconian Gateway (Trek) or Eve Online's Stargates. Maybe even a special Mention of the Mass Effect Conduit.

    The thing about AI in Halo is that even they are not infallible, as Halo 5: Guardians has shown. Lore has also shown that Forerunner AI have been corrupted by the Logic Plague, which Cortana probably has at this point, too.

    The culture from the Ian Banks M. Banks books. Nice to hear them mentioned. I like the mass effect reapers as well and HALO ai.
    And off course Star Wars droids love them all

    6:36 My takeaway from the reapers was that they are ascended being living in a sort of energy state and that their corporal forms are shaped in the way they are shaped because the creatures who created them were like the angels of Babylon 5
