How to mix interesting neutrals and greys with watercolor

- There are a few different ways you can mix neutral colors. You can get interesting greys and browns with just the slightest hint of their base colors by adding complementary colors together, or simply use the muddy parts on your palette to add neutral areas. Other possibilities are using premixed greys (there are a couple useful ones), or using a single pigment grey.

Enjoyed this video it has helped alot as I'm into my third yr of learning watercolor I'm trying to now learn more about mixing colors...I'm not sure I'll ever be good at it..but I do love looking at the different mixes one can achieve from combining different colors I'm sure this takes time tho like being a good cook .....how some chefs just instinctively know what to add to make a good dinner it takes time practice and alot of woopses...lol..many art blessing to you today... would like to say a quiet prayer to all aritist from Ukraine may they have peace and safety in their and their loved ones life....🙏💙💛✍👩🎨🎨 mikelle art mom
Mixing colors is definitely a skill that you will improve on over time and with practice. Just keep doing it!

This was such a helpful video for me. I knew a lot of this, but to see you mix the colors, and even colors I have but that I've never mixed together before was so beneficial. The lilac or lavender color you used is quite vibrant. I have nothing like that. What is the color? I am inspired to make another color wheel and do this myself instead of just watching you-- thanks for this great video!
Thank you so much Julie! 😊I mainly use two purples: Dioxazine Violet (which is seen in this video), and cobalt violet, which is softer, paler and granulating. Dioxazine Violet can differ a lot in lightfastness depending on the brand, I use the one by W&N which doesn't fade. Happy mixing!

Thank you for this beautiful video! I want to ask you something. I want to buy new watercolor paints but I couldnt decide which one is better. The brands that I can buy are van gogh 12+3, st petersburg sonnet 16 or 24 whole pans and daler rowney aquafine 24 half-pans travel set. What would be your choice?
I have to admit I haven't painted with any of these - sorry I can't be of help with these exact paints. But generally, I would opt for a set that doesn't have too many non-lightfast colors, and that has a well-balanced range of colors (most sets have). I would probably go for the St. Petersburg Sonnet paints (I know their artist grade paints and they are good for beginners). If you are going for student quality paints maybe keep your eyes open for Winsor & Newton Cotman - they're also really decent and very good for their price.

Hi Julia, thank you for this video, really useful as always. Can I just ask about blacks… I know you mentioned not using convenience blacks, and I’ve always avoided that so far but I paint mainly birds and struggle to mix really intense darks/black, for example for blackbirds or puffins. I have a neutral colour that’s very dark, and usually I just add in whatever colours I’m already using in the painting, and sometimes add indigo or sepia. It ends up pretty black but also flat. I know that apparently mixing the primary colours results in black but I’ve never been able to achieve this. Do you have any advice? Many thanks. :)
You can get a very dark neutral from mixes like Phthalo Green and Quin. Pink, or from Phthalo Blue and a warm red. Another possibility is Burnt Sienna + Ultramarine Blue. I've shown all of these in the video, but they are more dark grey than real black.
As far as I understand it, your main issue when using a pre-mixed black (which is totally fine for some subjects like black birds, I do that too) is avoiding the flatness. You can try and apply the paint in several layers, starting with very thin washes and continuously building up the layers with more pigment. This allows for some slightly lighter areas that let the paper white still come through. Hope that helps!
