Catchy title with a promise that really would be impossible to keep in the best case scenario.. it’s a commercial for a class. Not a bad thing if you are looking for a class. You’re a very good artist! You don’t need to make up BS video titles with magic tricks specially you as a great artist would know better 😊😊😊😊
Both! I can get messy but also create details. I have aphantasia, which means I can't imagine an apple in my hand if my life depended on it. I can't do guided meditation because all I see is black. However, I've been an artist since I was 18 months old. I won a state art ribbon when I was 8. I qualified to enter an art program at 11 but they wouldn't take me because I had to be 14. My art is done by gut. I understand shapes, shadows, and highlights because the brain knows when something is off. If I look at something I've done and something is wrong, I can find it and correct it ... but I can't plan it or take it out of my head. I draw by "feel" and instinct. I'm trying to learn to paint more loosely, but it's difficult because my brain goes for the details, which makes some works seem over processed. No matter how loose I intend the painting to be, I always get lost in the details, especially with pens. Trying, so thank you for sharing! The more I understand about loose painting, the easier it gets .... as long as I can leave it alone when it's done.
May I see a piece of your work. I wonder if your art is uniquely favoured by aphantasia or whether there are any distinct features that correlate to your art work and the condition
Neat! And this was one of the best teaching videos I have seen. And believe me when I say, I have seen a lot of painting tutorials over the past 5-7 years.
Using 100% cotton paper really does make a difference. A teacher of intermediate watercolour recommended artist grade paints but never mentioned the importance of the paper. Consequently I started out using pulp paper. It dried almost instantly, and the paint was not absorbed by the paper. It just sat on the top. When trying to glaze another layer over the dried pigment the fresh layer just lifted up the dried layer resulting in a homogenious mixture of the two colours. Also- I found that the cheaper paper pilled similarly to ply/cotton fabric.
That was so very helpful, thank you. I have focal hand dystonia after years of trying to be neat and have perfect lines, so now it’s messy all the way, as this relaxes my hand so I can paint again 😊
That was a fantastic tutorial with so much useful information and great technical tips. I learned so much, and I'm going to give this a try!! Thanks for sharing your talent and experience, I really appreciate it very much!
NEAT. Thank you for another watercolor tutorial showing your process and explaining why you paint how you do. And yes, white gouache helps make those highlight POP, especially the fine mist of the crashing waves.
I keep coming back to your tutorials because your precise explanations have made a significant impact on loosening me up. Watercolor is challenging, due to my perfectionist brain's proclivity to obsess over minutiæ. As a self-taught artist, comfortably facile with colored pencils and photo-realism, I decided to try mastering a more difficult-to-control media... while unlearning the various approaches that stymied artistic flowering in the past. I come to your channel and find inspiration... Suddenly, it's hours later, and have to tear myself from the studio to eat or I'll lose track of time hyperfocused on an experimental project that turned into a big fun new discovery! Thank You for lifting up other artists to a higher level of freedom of expression.🙏💫
I’m definitely messy! That’s why I always revert to street sketch watercolor and ink. You have been very helpful with the tips in this video. I’ll be back
Messy and abstract so I plan on using your excellent information and scoot just a little towards abstract. I am looking forward to experimenting. Thank you for an excellent video!!
Messy would describe it but I’ve only been painting for a year and half so still learning at this point. I hope to paint more of an impressionist style but I love your paintings. I believe realism is needed to create an impressionist subject. I guess really the journey is about finding your personal style hope to do that someday. I am finishing up some courses now but will definitely check the masters class. Thank you for taking the time to share your exceptional talent.
Very helpful... I was surprised how you applied water to the paper and worked it and worked it. I would have thought the paper would deteriorate but I'm going to try that myself now. Thanks for many helpful tips and inspiration.
I am in the advanced beginner category. I have been very 'tight' [AKA NEAT], but with instruction & practice, I am becoming more 'messy' which is my desire to master both! This tutorial was easy to understand and added much to my grasp of watercolor technique! Much appreciated!!!!
Watched your class on the lighthouse. Absolutely fabulous and truly inspirational. I was a neat painter but found it to frustrating. Now moved onto be more messy and happier painter. Thanks for the class which seems to me to be a perfect balance between messy & neat. Bravo 👏😁
Ohh wow 🤯 I love these lighthouses! I am definitely a Neat loose painter. Thanks so much for sharing this information of tips with us. Just what I needed to learn.
I learned a great deal from this tutorial. I have been working on a sunset painting which could have greatly benefited from som wet-in-eet looseness as a whole in transitioning from one section to another. I also painted some pet portraits which pleased me greatly, however I had not painted the background as part of my process. This left me with great anxiety as I strughled to figure out how to paint a background around the subject without hard lines. Your technique of loosely painting around the subject must be the answer! Thank you very much for sharing your process!
I Love it so much!❤❤❤ sometimes I love to painting messy and neatly when it's necessary. And when you work on wet on wet, the artwork turn so magical! That's why I love watercolors so much! Thank you fir this tips❤😊
Excellent 👌...I feel you are right blend of wet on dry and wet on wet ..my biggest frustration in watercolor is SPEED! I hate speed in art...with wet on wet...could slow down ...like Louise De Masi style
I love your word Missy control that's kind of what I do in my paintings thank you very much for this video I have a Facebook group for art that I'll be sharing this video with. I also subscribed to you beautiful work
Hi Teri, in the description of this video, you'll find the masterclass link and everything is explained there, the photos of the projects are also displayed. I hope this helped!
Thank you that was excelent. I am currently using a very restricted colour palate as I think the image holds together better. The only critique i would make is that the blue at the top of your painting didn't use a big enough brush, it's too streaky but you are currently my watercolour painting hero. Thank you for sharing your techniques
Francoise's courses are highly recommended. If you want to learn about watercolor painting quickly and effectively and want to improve your skills, this is the right place for you. Francoise is a master at explaining all the tricks in an understandable and friendly way. There is a lot on offer in her courses, which is really worthwhile. She also helps you individually when you write to her
Great video! Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge, and for all the preparation you must have put in to prepare this video. Very helpful! BTW I think I tend toward messy, but there are some subjects that require me to be neat.
I really enjoyed your video. Thanks. When you were putting in your washes, I think it would be useful to have some way of knowing how much time elapses. I suppose I'm saying I would like to watch the uncut version of you painting that lighthouse picture. I struggle with bigger washes, so I'm super interested.
Messy …I tell myself I’m making art not blueprints. 😊 Also, I’ll put browns on yellow & orange in a heartbeat, looks great. No better layer than burnt sienna and yellow ochre. Great painting & information. Thank you.
I think I tend to be on the messy side. It’s always about balance. Also knowing when to put down the brush, and stopping especially when you get to the point where you are painting and forget to pay attention!
What a lovely video! Messy for me - with a touch of detail! I love painting wet into wet & seeing the surprise unfold. I’ve been practicing to get my skills back after a decade. I learned with larger brushes from Ron Ranson books & videos when he was still with us. He pushed for a very limited palette, just as you mentioned, & lots of loose wild skies, rivers, lakes & trees using big brushes- the hake was his signature brush. My practice now is to prepare to paint a sunset seascape as a wedding gift for my son. It’s from a photo of the place in Italy where he proposed ♥️🌅 Question: I watched you pour water onto the paper & spend a lot of time moving the water around. Did you add more water? Based on how much time you spent pouring & brushing water, it seems like you had a goal of extreme saturation. From what you said throughout the early part of the video while painting wet into wet, it seems I might need to focus on getting my paper extra wet for best wet into wet results. 🌸 Gorgeous video with excellent tips & explanations on why you make your choices! I’ll look into your courses! Many thanks!
@@paintingandchocolate I thought so!! Thank you for confirming this! I’ve watched 3 online teachers who give tutorials that appeal to my style of watercolor (loose, larger brushes, + wet into wet). The amount of water on the paper is never fully explained. I know it makes a difference from my own experience but don’t know enough yet to get it right for the type of paper & style of wash + paint I desire. Thanks for this! I’ll keep watching your videos & will consider taking a class with you when my life is a little slower ☺️
Lovely to watch this work come together. Quick question if i could. Do you pre stretch your paper? Or does the better quality mean you dont have problems with buckling?
This is excellent and very tempting. Too bad I must first get reacquainted with the basics after a break of almost eight years (and I didn't get far the first time!). I will practice and maybe take Francoise's "Landscape for Beginners" course first, but I'll keep this one in mind, that's for sure!

No pressure as I know showing work can be a private issue so excuse my directness. I am happy for only a comment on this and you don’t need to show
Very very good
Please share some of your works with us, I’d love to see your talent
I loved this tutorial, you made it look effortless, but i know that there's a huge amount of learned skills going on there. Really inspiring!
I am glad this helps!

The paper matters more than the paint.

Mostly working neat, I also love the realism in your picture of the lighthouse.

So far I have been messy, but as I progress, and slow down, I get neater. Especially with the details.
That is great, keep it up!
Both actually...
I love to paint realistic paintings and explore more while painting. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial dear francoise.🤗🥰🥰🥰

Excellent advice and tutorial. New subscriber.

Messy but occasionally the perfectionism kicks in.
That sounds like a great compromise 🙂
I agree! 😄
