Yes, some of the mixes seem very weird at first, or like they'd give out brown. It was a very fun thing to test out, hehe! :)

Indanthrone blue is my favorite blue too, I can't decide which one I like better though...the Daniel smith indanthrone blue or Sennelier indanthrene blue! Great walk through on creating neutrals! I mentioned below but will add again how pleasantly surprised I was to see the dioxazine purple and hookers geeen mix a beautiful neutral!!
Thank you! :)I have yet to try Sennelier's version of the color. I've been eyeing their Indanthrone and their Prussian Blue but it's hard to justify the purchase for now... I have this pigment (Indanthrone - PB60) by three brands and they are all different.
I loved the dioxazine purple/hooker's green neutral! It feels like something really useful for artists who like to paint flowers a lot and who want to keep the palette simple :)

This is really useful! Thought I already knew how to mix a black and that's all I needed....but some of these I never thought to try and just looks better as a shadow when they are the colors used in the painting in the first place.

Mixing our own greys makes for such rich, deep colors! And it clears room in the palette for more colors by removing the black, hehe :)

I found out some time ago that the original mixture of Payne's gray consisted of Prussian blue, crimson lake, and yellow ochre.

I am about to start doing studies for a large painting with a very restricted palette - mostly browns and greys, so this video was particularly helpful. I will definitely be buying some Sennelier caput mortum and some Daniel Smith cobalt teal blue! That grey is the softest, most beautiful grey!
Isn't it? I was kind of surprised by how it came out! Quick tip: if you can get Daniel Smith's Cobalt Teal Blue watercolor stick, it'll save you a couple of bucks! This is what I got and it works really well, since I like to paint mostly from dried paint. It's like a long paint cake that you can cut yourself to fit your pan :)
I had thought of that, but I plan to also dilute the color(s) and use with a dip pen. I still might do this since you are correct, it's a terrific bargain.
I've never used watercolors with a dip pen, do you have to make the color much stronger for the lines to show? How do you get the paint on the nib? (I'm curious! Sorry XD)
I have never done it either, so I am assuming that you just need to mix the paint to flow like ink and you need to mix enough of it to dip the pen into it. I have vials that my blood test strips come in and I have been saving them to use for mixing and storing. I think that many calligraphers use different paints rather than inks because of the variety and lightfastness that can be obtained from paint.
I see! I think there's a way to use a brush to put the liquid inky paint on the nib, so that way you don't have to make a large quantity of "ink". Sounds like a very interesting process :D

I've looked at Jane Blundell's website often, but I use handprint more. I don't really have issues with mixing paints by now so I more often seek the technical, chemical infos rather than mixing infos. That said, when I feel like looking at color eyecandy, I go to Jane's website. She's an invaluable resource for comparing how pigments look, too, compared to other similar colors.

When we mix two secondary colours ( like green and purple ) we actually mix three primary ones ( yellow, red, blue ) because green comes from yellow and blue, purple comes from blue and red.
That’s the theory and can be the practise as well, once you recognise,
whereabout your triad - mixture is tending to take place on the colour-chart, and when you know the complementary opponents ( like red - green, orange - blue, and yellow - purple ) you can easily control and balance your greys, and make them as neutral you just want.
Mixing triads allows you to experience more flexibility at choosing your way, and the result is more stable and rich at component and looking, as all the pigments have their own physical behaviour in different mixtures of pigments.( granulation, transparency, cold- warm relations, fluency, etc. )
Your lovely review shows wonderfully, that the right mixture of secondaries can work. The only thing is, when the ratio of the two mixtures ( I mean the two secondary colours ) are different, than can happen that we get one of the primary hues as a dominant ( blue, yellow or red ). The funny thing in the market, that the pigment called ‘neutral tint’ at some companies looks slightly bluish, se not exactly neutral, or the ‘Paynes Grey’ can be bluish as well. Overall, I don’t think it is something to worry about. Each and every individual painting and their local hue -relations in a picture we paint are different and at the end of the day we will find the most suitable hues of grey to choose as an element of the whole picture. Mixtured greys usually more exciting, they aren’t too ‘flat’ ( as you also mentioned ) however sometimes something more smooth and even will be more useful.

The brush I used for the part at the beginning with the sketch of the girl with a baseball cap is a Raven mop by Jackson's, size 10/0 (here bit.ly/2pooSU3 ). The brush I used for the swatches is a Royal and Langnickel Zen Z83R brush in size 8. Hope that helps! :)

nice work. would you say, the mixes with at least one opaque colour are not only more opaque but not that nice as well? or do you use all of these mixes at one point?
Whether the mixes are nicer or not is a matter of personal taste... I use all of them. One of my fav is made from two opaque colors :)
I find it handy to have this reference chart and knowledge because it helps me find neutral mixes faster when working with a palette that has a unique color selection.
@@EveBolt interesting. do you have a video, where I could see an example? a painting with opaque grays? II am trying some lanscape motives, small citiy pictures with some houses and various forms of abstracts. I sometimes use opaque bright colours for some particular reason. (rather in pure form to be honest). But I don't see the application of opaque greys. I like to see examples to understand more (mostly, because I am often not that motivated, to try new things, while I am either trying to get better or just paint to relax. One could also say, I am too lazy :-D )

If you have colors that look like them, or have the same pigments, you can still try them to see if they mix in a grey or black neutral :)

You are talking as if in the video she is using weird and expensive primateks that no one has. Yet the sienas the umber the phthalos and the Ultramarine are all included in every single beginner set. If you don't "own" those colors then which ones DO you own? JESUS CHRIST!!!!!!
@@Drumaier no need to be so rude. Not all beginners understand that the pigments are universal in watercolour and they don't need a specific brand's version. Also not all starter sets, even high quality ones, have all of the mentioned pigments. Different brands also have different names for the same pigment, and not all brands offer pigment information in the first place. Someone looking only at the names of the paints would struggle to find them all in a starter set.
I just bought Daniel Smith half pans Floral Inspiration on Blicks website. I hope you review those. I need to learn to mix with those floral.
colors were nice but here is the thing- If I were expert then I would have already known it and if I am not expert then I have a basic pallet. So this video was not useful for me, at least for now.
