Easy Weed Eater Carburetor Adjustment To FIX - BOGGING DOWN - STARTING PROBLEMS - ROUGH IDLE

  • You will learn how to properly adjust your carburetor, which is the main cause of your problem, when the engine BOGS Down when throttling up, engine Won't Start, Won't Idle or Rough Idle problems and more.
    Many people run their weed eaters / string trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers and other 2-cycle engines with the carburetor out of adjustment. It is very easy to adjust your carburetor and doing so will remedy many of the common problems people have.
    Also, during winter months or when the equipment is not in use for a period of time... be sure to drain the fuel from the tank and run the fuel out of the carburetor to prevent the carburetor from gumming up.
    Many people have asked how I got the slots in the adjustment screws... Click on the linked video at the end of this one to learn how!

    Super annoying how the manufacturer doesn't slot those adjuster heads. Instead you need a dumb specialty tool.

    Thanks for the video I have a same machine and this start on but smoke too much What can be ? I put new spark plug Clean mix oil gas mix from Lowes 40:1 This a New carburetor New fuel lines too Somebody helpme Or can be for the carburetor adjustment ? Let me know please

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Without more information... it sounds like your oil / fuel mixture is too rich (too much oil in the gas). Check your owners manual to make sure you have the proper mixture. also look at the container your 2 cycle oil comes in and it will tell you how much oil to mix with your gas to achieve the mix your weed trimmer requires.
      I like to run my 2 cycle engines a little rich which helps lubricate the engine better... but you don't want it too rich or you may foul the spark plug and gum up the exhaust screen.

    The main thing I needed to know was the initial settings of the carburetor, which is start with both Low & Hi screws all the way in and down, then back out the Low1/4 turn and the Hi 1-1/2 turns to start with, then go from there. I had no manual and have relied on a local small engines shop and internet. You brought out some good points, including the adjustment notch cut all the way across to use a screwdriver and setting idle for no movement and the string line out to normal length for the load before making the final adjustments.

      Floats in the carb get gummed up if you run tank empty and leave it residual oil in fuel dries and gums everything up and you have to clean it or new carb

    I have a new craftsman 25 CC Weedwhacker that looks similar to yours except mine also has a electric start shaft hole in the casing where you can put your drill on it to start it if you buy the optional drill adapter, anyways I find the motor on these red Craftsmans are sluggish, when you hit the throttle,they’re not very reactive even after you tune them to the perfect spot. My older green craftsman Weedwhacker was a lot more reactive, when I bought the new red one I noticed it immediately, any thoughts?

    Thanks for sharing. Great info. @ 5.28 min of the video, you were adjusting a vertical screw. Was that for throttle movement? which screw was that? Hi/Low initial setting info is great help. What should be the initial setting for the idle screw. Mine is all the way in. Is it ok?

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes… I was adjusting the idle screw. On a string trimmer you want to adjust it to where the head or string is not turning at idle but almost. There is no particular number of turns for an idle adjustment screw. On a chainsaw you set the idle so that the chain is not turning but almost. Hope that helps

    Thank you so much for this video! I've found others that told me that's what I needed to adjust, but none of them explained which was which and that you needed to be in the middle of bogging down between clockwise and counter-clockwise! Now I can use my trimmer without having to "jump" the throttle lower and higher to prevent it from bogging out.

    Sir sorry to bother you. I have craftsman weedeater that is less than 2 months old. The last time I was using it it just up and started acting like it was out of fuel and stalled. Started it and it will idle for a few minutes and die or if you give it gas just hesitates then dies. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Local repair shop wants $40 hr with 2 hour minimum just to adjust a carburator. Figured if I could fix i could skip the hassle of a return.

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      sounds like your carburetor needs adjusting. Did you try to adjust the carburetor?... if you turn the Low side screw just a bit one way or the other you may be able to correct your problem... be careful to note where it is currently set so you don't make things worse though. Could also be a bad coil?... but unlikely since it is brand new?.
      Hard to help you further than my video without being there. Maybe you have a friend who knows a little that could look at it with you... otherwise you may come out ahead just exchanging it and getting a fresh start.

    I’ve got a Craftsman weed eater that always ran fine and it started bogging down and even quitting when you give it gas. I didn’t have the adjuster tools (mine is the circle with a flat part) so I ordered those. Only $20 for a set. Ended up tweaking mine a bit and it runs a lot better than it was. I can use it again. I had already took the carb apart and cleaned it out. Diaphragm and gaskets were fine so I didn’t replace them yet. • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think I understand what you are saying / asking. The "stages" you are talking about are the choke on... the choke partially on and I assume the 3rd stage would be the choke in the off position. If you are having problems with throttling up when the choke is off... that means the engine is not getting enough fuel.
      Try turning the "Low Side" adjustment screw (the one closest to the engine typically) counter clockwise a 1/8 to a 1/4 turn and see if that helps.

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you can't get it started or it starts and dies... you can try to make a small adjustment to the low side adjustment screw. I would turn it a 1/4 turn counter clockwise (which will give it more fuel) and see if it will start and run. If not try turning it a 1/4 turn the other direction (clockwise) to see if that helps to get it running. Once you get it running...even a little bit you can make the fine tuning adjustments as I describe in this video.
      If you can't get it running you may have another problem... clogged fuel filter, clogged air filter, gummed up carb (very common if you left it over the winter with gas in it... the gas settles and separates and clogs up the carb), broken fuel line... etc.
      You can watch this video for help with getting it started if adjusting the screws doesn't work and it is not getting fuel.

    You never turned off the choke to setting 1. You did all adjustments on full choke. Biggest problem on these trimmers is that after all adjustments they cut out as soon as you set the choke setting to run mode, that is, standard operation. Please clarify and show how your trimmer runs on setting one. This is missing in your video.

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On that weed eater #1 is full choke, #2 is 1/2 choke and #3 is no choke. If you have to run your machine on full choke it is probably because your carburetor needs cleaning, fuel filter is clogged or you have a clogged air filter... you are not getting enough fuel.
      Be sure to always empty the fuel out of the tank and run it out of the carb when not using for a while to prevent gumming up your carb.

    This absolutely worked for me. I used a tiny saw to make the cuts across the top of the screws. This machine has been/is so frustrating. Not nearly so much now. Thanks again.

    Thanks a heep for both your videos. I cut my carburator adjustment slot as you showed and can now adjust the mix. My son found this trimmer (Yard Machine Y2500) in the garbage and would not start up at all. Needed a new bulb and spark plug plus a good carb cleaning. Everything else is pristine condition. Now works great. Thanks again.

    Is it the same method for a 4cycle. My leaf blower is straight gas

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on the carburetor… You may have just one air fuel adjustment screw… Or possibly none at all. I will have a video coming out in the next few weeks of a four cycle weedeater that I repaired. It had one adjustment screw on the carburetor and also add a limiter cap over that one screw that I had to remove.

    What if I can't get the trimmer to start to warm up? It is starting to install that's all it does

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I understand your question correctly... your trimmer is starting but then it stalls. If that is the case I would adjust the low side fuel adjustment screw just a 1/4 turn one way and try it and see if it will run enough to adjust...if not try the other way. If you have already done that and your adjustment screws are off you may have to start over and screw them all the way in then out 1-1/2 turns and adjust from there.
      You could also have another problem... bad coil, fuel line or filter problem... etc.

    I have the very same trimmer but it won't idle, therefore adjusting these two screws while the engine is running is impossible.

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      it sounds like your trimmer will run but not idle. I would try adjusting the hi side while it is running full throttle and once that is set leave that screw alone. Let the rpm's come down with your throttle as low as you can (while keeping it running) and adjust the low side screw. when you turn it one way or the other the idle should get better if that is your problem. If that doesn't help you may have to replace your fuel filter, clean your carburetor or you may have a cracked fuel line...etc. I have videos on how to do those things if you need further help.
      hope that helps

      @@helpinguonline I already replaced all the fuel line and fuel filter. I also took the carb off, apart, sprayed every orifice with solvent, checked the diaphragm, it all looks like new. This tool has under five hours of run time. Will not idle.

    My H2520 would not go full throttle the first time I fired it up this year, which would only be the second season I've had it. I at first thought it was due to hastily using SAE30 motor oil to mix the fuel last year instead of 2-cycle. It ran fine with that, but I figured the higher ash content may have gummed up the filter after sitting all winter, so I planned on buying a new filter and spark plug in hopes of getting it back to normal. Instead, I performed the procedure on this video, using a Dremel tool with cut-off wheel to make the notches, and dare I say it actually runs better than when it was new!

    I have a craftsman 31CC which is similar. The light blue lever I think adjust the choke. How is that adjusted. My trimmer will not run in position 3 and runs best halfway between position 1 and 2.

    • @helpinguonline
      @helpinguonline  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That means that your carburetor is not getting enough fuel and to make it run you are having to limit the amount of air your carburetor is getting. If you left fuel in your trimmer over the winter the carburetor may need cleaning (the fuel will separate and gum up your carb). You can watch my other video, that is linked at the end of this one, on how to take apart and clean the carb. th-cam.com/video/vRSRANWAnWY/w-d-xo.html
      You can also check for a clogged fuel filter, cracked fuel line, loose carburetor, etc. Something is limiting the amount of Gas it is getting... most often a clog or dirty carb.

    "Cut a slot in them", son of a gun!
    I knew I needed to adjust the carb, but didn't have the special tool for it, I was ready to throw this thing out tomorrow so I figured I'd screw around with it, if I kill it so be it.
    I just watched your video... I feel like an idiot. "cut a slot in the screw heads", son of a gun!
    I didn't have to take them out of the carburetor, I just got the Dremel out and slice right through the housing and adjusted them with a screwdriver. it's working like brand new, thank you sir.

    THANK YOU!! I had a trimmer that would stall if I let it idle and wouldn't run fast enough. I disassembled everything thinking it was the carb or a clogged muffler.
    I cut the adjustment screws with a dremel and had it running perfectly in 30 seconds.
