You are a genius. I have about eight weedeaters people gave me that only run on choke. I tried so many different solutions and never even thought about the tank vent. Thank you so much now I have to look at eight of them again LOL😂
I have 1 doing the same thing. I changed the plunger because it was leaking then the line was crack so I change it after that it won't run. I will be checking it out again.
I’ve been fighting sluggish equipment, replacing plugs and rebuilding carbs etc. I never ever would have expected the gas tank vents to be the problem. I can’t wait to give this a try.
I had the exact same problem with my echo polesaw/weed eater and took it back to the dealer I bought it from. They installed a new carburetor. I got it home and it would not run. I drilled a tiny hole in my gas cap to get it to run. Thanks for the info.
Auto tech here and friend of mine gave me his trimmer to try to get it to idle. Only ran with choke on and idle screw all the way in. First of all the lines was in wrong place and adjusted mixture screws thing runs like new cleaned it up now looks like new but it’s a 2016 model craftsman. Saved him a few hundreds on a new one. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge.
I worked on engines since I was a kid and numerous echo Weed eaters for 45 years. This is the first time I couldn't fix one. I looked on numerous videos and they show muffler clogged, carb issues, carb adjustment, sparkplug, gas, fuel lines which I already illuminated. I then saw your vent trouble shooting which was my problem. Never thought of this or had this issue ever. The line assembly was new. I just have to get a vent tube and we're good. Thanks!!!
Arrrrr the joy of finding the problem I know it well, sometimes I'm not so lucky but with the help of people like your self we have a better chance. Thanks from Graeme in Australia
Looks like the sort of thing that happens to me every year preparing for bushfire season, and every year I take it in for a service. You've just saved me a ton of money and heaps of time waiting. Thank you!
I got a "C" on this if this was a test. I knew right away that the fuel lines were backwards. Tank line is always close to then engine on these. Other clue was when you were priming the bulb, it wasn't priming correctly. That could be because of the line (which it was) or that the bulb is cracked or weak. Since it was dis-colored, I would replace it. Probably has one more season before it goes south. Good tip on removing plastic caps. I knoew about them, but was unsure which was the high and low. The vent hose tip was priceless! Never would have figured that out! Great find! Thanks a bunch.
Had same issue on SRM 280T. After porting exhaust, replacing carb, filters, and lines it was the two intake bolts that had loosened over 10 years of use(vacuum leak). Thank you for this informative video

Man thank you for this video and your time here , I have a 20 year old srm 3100 trimmer and have a new carb in it and only runs on choke and now I know why !!! I got the lines wrong , it was frustrating bc I know the machine is a powerful engine and had never failed me before I just put the lines weong
Thanks for the video, stuffed around with a trimmer that wouldn't get off idle, followed your checks and found a blocked fuel intake under the filter. Looked like a ball of grey gunk! Put her back together and primed properly which is what caught my attention in your video and ran mint after a few tweaks on the mixtures. Saved a new carby purchase, which would have been a waste of money.
I've had my Roybi for just over a year now and it's doing the same thing this was. I've never taken the lines off, so I know it's not that, so gonna try the filter and see if that's it. Thanks so much for ALL the tips!! It's great when I can watch a video that actually helps!
Thanks. I picked up one that was doing the same thing. The fuel cap wasn't venting good and I think it caused the primer button to vapor lock. Cleaned the fuel cap up and unplug the line between the carburetor and timer button and had to pump the primer button a few times to get the air out and now it runs great. Thanks for sharing the knowledge
Thank you sir, I've been fooling with this old echo 210 for a while now actually 2 weedeaters trying to get one going, you got me straightened right out.
Outstanding! Based on this video I compared our trimmer that starts but won't keep running with the one that is o.k. and darn if the fuel lines weren't crossed! Thank you so much! Glad I didn't have to try all the other things but I WILL remember them!
SIR, you are a great little mechanic. I really wish I could do half as much as you can do. Ive never been able to work on my cars like I wanted to so I always had to buy cars in fantastic shape so I dont have to pay huge charges like so many idiots like me end up. I have been very blessed in the cars ive owned. I have a 2011 POLICE Crown Victoria that had a 109,000 on it when I bought it. It was Fleet maintained by the dept motor pool and it was in perfect condition my mechanic asked me if it was the original motor because it was in such beautiful condition. Anyway Im so impressed with your ability the way you got right to the problem. Congratulation on your channel. I wish you were my personal mechanic. I would trust you completely.
I went through every step you did, and my pole saw still only runs when choked. I even did a total Carb replacement, and it's still the same thing. I don't know what else to do. Thank you, though. Great video.
Boy how simple you make things, would not have even thought about a mix up in the fuel and return line, great help to start sorting out my problem with my Ryobi weed eater, just replaced the carbie but wont run without choke, now know where to start looking, just hope i have the same problem. also didn't know how to tune the carbie but now have an idea, knew about the small adjustment screw in the top of the throttle body but wasn't sure what it adjusted. Thanks heap, am now going to watch your other videos.

After messing with 2strokes one too many times I changed all my trimmers and other 2 strokes to battery. Never regretted it because with no longer wasting time with crappy equipment I'm getting more done
Been running 2 strokes for years, and I mean probably dozens, if not hundreds, over 33 yrs in the tree business. Weed eaters and trimmers , all part of the fleet. Slowly getting some battery stuff in the fleet. I keep my saws outside all the time, in the rain, etc. Never hurts them. Now, gotta consider how to keep all the electric tools, covered, and places for all the chargers and spare batteries, for all this new equipment. We are in a new age.
I always empty the fuel tank when checking for water. Water is always on the bottom..If you shake the tank , then you will see water distributed in the fuel. Good video.. thank you
My Troy-bilt st75ss(I think, lol) is 20 years old ! Use it to weed whack and I have a Ryobi tiller attachment that fits the shaft for my garden. Rebuilt the carb around 2008 and haven't had a problem since. Sometimes you get lucky and get a great machine! It was my late father's trimmer and I'll never let it go, I guess because it has that tough, never quit quality like the old man. I hope he knows he picked a damn good one😉😏
You're friggin wizard! I love your patience and thoroughness. What an amazing video. I just subbed, liked, and saved with this one video. Thank you for being so generous to share your wisdom.
One thing that I can hear is that the idle is too high! The first thing that you want to do to a 2-stroke engine is stop the trimmer head from spinning or if it is a chainsaw you need to turn the idle down until the chain stops spinning! When you have a high idle setting your already in to the off idle circuit! And that causes a dead spot when you clobber the throttle! That throttle plate needs to be closed to where if you look inside the throttle bore on the same side that the high and low jet is on you will see two little holes! One on the front side of the throttle plate is direct vacuum and is your low speed and if you crack open the throttle plate you will see another hole on the back side and that is your metered vacuum and opens the high speed. The throttle plate needs to be closed until it is in the middle of these two little holes in order to have transfer from low to high vacuum signal. 😉
How about a 2 stroke tiller bolens bl410 model it runs and idles on level 1 but when I move to 2 it turns off has a new carb good compression new spark plug good spark
Thank you for helping us out to troubleshoot these little engines. If I may, I would like to ask you if you could do close-up shots of the small details. My eyes are not helping much, and again, thank you. Excellent work!

Nice... my weedeater, of almost this exact model has the same issue. Scince the problem started all of a sudden, im guessing its the airhose from the tank. Will check it out. THANK YOU. :)
I suppose the reason for higher octane fuel is that it has no alcohol in it that would destroy seals in the fuel system. I have two weed eaters that are 5 years old & they have used regular pump gas since day one. Dunno. Great video.
Nice video friend...thanks. Guess the old methods are only so good...just because there’s fuel in the tank, doesn’t mean it’s getting to, into, and thru the carb...
I am so going to be asking this man for help if I cant get this strimmer I just brought at an auction. I only had a little mess around with it earlier today and will be trying a new spark plug after I have tried a couple more things hopefully he is still active online :)
My 16 year old Craftsman (poulan) trimmer has two different size fuel lines and fittings, so they can't be put on wrong. The smaller line is the fuel supply. I thought they were all that way. Tank vent is in fuel cap. This year, it is acting up. Maybe I didn't get all the fuel out last year. Carb adjustments work, even trimming grass under load.. It later acts up, stalling and hard starting. Stalling even with choke, as if out of gas. Bulb pumps but air is in return line along with fuel. Forget if it always did this. Fuel lines look good. Acted up with no fuel filter and cap loose. I took the carb apart and no visible dirt or deposits found. I put the top carb section on wrong and punctured the fuel pump diaphram with a screw, so I don't know if cleaning helped. I ordered a new carb as it may be something else inside carb. It has not arrived yet.
Nice video. One other thing that needs to be checked is the screen in the muffler. It gets clogged with carbon and won’t allow it to run correctly. I worked in a small engine shop and ran into it all the time. Another indication of it being clogged was the spark plug was fouled up with carbon.
Thumbs Up Man I appreciate the video. Finally i found a good teacher lol You addressed a couple things I didn't even think of doing or checking 👌 You gave me the "light bulb moment" 💡 Ill have this used $50 buck wipper snipper hauling ass in no time haha thanks bro "GOOD MORNING MY NEIGHBOURS" Hahaha
I have a trimmer that would only run on half choke for years. It would not start today. Figured I have nothing to lose by taking it apart. It's hard to get the thing apart to even work on it. There is a red cover over the top of the engine which is notoriously difficult to remove. There's 10 different screw types & sizes. The fuel lines are so old, they're nearly impossible to remove. Hard to tell if there's even a problem with the choke apparatus. I don't have the skills or experience to know how to fix it if there is. There was a bunch of fuel in the piston area that came gushing out when I removed the cap under the fuel tank. The gasket ripped in half when the cap came off, so it really can't be reused at this point. So I'm guessing the engine was flooded in addition to having an air problem. Any parts that this might need are likely not carried at the local hardware store. Even if I spent the money on the parts needed, there's no guarantee I could even put this thing back together. Also, taking it somewhere to try to have them fix it would have been more expensive than buying a new one in the first place. Solution - don't buy gas trimmers unless you have friends or family with skills & ready access to replacement parts. The throwaway economy that we've developed is unsustainable, and eventually will come crashing down.
Thanks man, had the same problem whit my dads new trimmer and could not work it out. Seems he switcht the hoses around when he try to fix a fuel leak. Blast, disasembled the hole machien and cleand it but stil didn't work. Was breaking my head on it but never tought about those darn hoses!
I fixed small engine equipment in the past and now do it on the side for fun. One note about that echo brand is they use a hose and vent system...so the gas cap is not vented...thats the difference...like a mower gas cap is vented....and some chainsaws too...on a trimmer you may turn it sideways or upside down so im guessing they made it that way so no gas will ever come out of your gas cap.
very good in my opinion...but the camera has to get closer, to zoom in for us novices who cant ask anything in real time. And you know wht tey say about ''ASSUME''
Have a still weed trimmer it did almost the same thing, a guy who works on those, took and removed the muffler filter, never knew they had one, replaced the old one for free runs like a new one.
Excellent information. My Echo weed eater has been driving me crazy. Starts fine but several minutes into job it starts to bog down and won’t rev up to full. Rebuild carb and checked lines. Same thing when completed. It ever crossed my mind that it could be the gas tank vent filter. Thank you.
My friend had a Stihl weedcutter from 1980’s. He removed the gas air filter and made one out of a window screen mesh leftover. He just layered the mesh with three layers, crossing over the layers. It works fine and he saved a little bit by keeping the trimmer. It works fine with the fuel mixture for the 2 cycle engine.
@@helpinguonline I'm a handy guy and have fancied myself as being able to learn to repair my own 2-cycle and 4-cycle gas tools but it hasn't gone well for me to date. The 2-cycle tools are the truly tough ones, compounded by ethanol fuel and its detrimental effects. Before one learns how to repair them, one needs to learn everything about all of the parts and what can go wrong with any of them. Only then can one be able to go about troubleshooting. I've found that a pedestrian knowledge of 2-cycle engines won't help e.g. assuming issues with clogged fuel filters and carburetors to correct restricted fuel flow, and squirting anything that moves with carburetor cleaner by itself won't help. But your video is one of the best places to start. Thanks again and Good Luck.
My Stihl does not have a vent. My Echo does just like this one. The Echo works fine. The Stihl just started giving me fits where it runs on choke but not off choke. I will use as many of these techniques and see where it leads me.
I learned that the carb. vent in the white cap assy. may be defective and not allow the "Throttle - up" condition. By unplugging it as seen in the video, it allows air to pass into the tank. I thought it was the opposite- that it vented outwards towards atmospheric air to equalize the pressure inside the tank from over pressurizing for safety. Thank You.

I always empty the fuel tank when checking for water. Water is always on the bottom..If you shake the tank , then you will see water distributed in the fuel. Good video.. thank you
Exactly. Water is heavier and gravitates to the bottom, so draining off a little from the top will not be a valid test of fuel purity.

He was trying to get it started bro...and keep it running. I’ll bet he knows exactly how to set the idle on a trimmer or other fuel powered engine.
How about a 2 stroke tiller bolens bl410 model it runs and idles on level 1 but when I move to 2 it turns off has a new carb good compression new spark plug good spark
😅
High idle can also be from an air leak after the carb.

I suppose the reason for higher octane fuel is that it has no alcohol in it that would destroy seals in the fuel system. I have two weed eaters that are 5 years old & they have used regular pump gas since day one. Dunno. Great video.
The excitement when you fix something!
Thank you for sharing this information.
Now I can use the machine again😊
Great 👍
Awesome 👌 job thanks my friend. You just fixed my weed trimmer for me. Thank you!
Glad to year that
Thanks for the idea man...Funtastic...Good Job!
Glad you liked it!
Thank you you're a wonderful teacher
Nice video.
One other thing that needs to be checked is the screen in the muffler. It gets clogged with carbon and won’t allow it to run correctly.
I worked in a small engine shop and ran into it all the time. Another indication of it being clogged was the spark plug was fouled up with carbon.
Take screen out and heat red with a torch with long handled pliers. Check first when it won't run again from the last time.
Leave the screen on the bench and go back to work?
Stihl is/ was terrible for that. Losing the screen= better ruuning. Do that in Commiefornia, and, lookout.
@@treeguyablethey will never, ever, come check if the spark arrestor is in place on a piece of lawn equipment.....
Thumbs Up Man
I appreciate the video. Finally i found a good teacher lol
You addressed a couple things I didn't even think of doing or checking 👌
You gave me the "light bulb moment"
💡
Ill have this used $50 buck wipper snipper hauling ass in no time haha thanks bro
"GOOD MORNING MY NEIGHBOURS"
Hahaha
Glad I could help
One note about that echo brand is they use a hose and vent system...so the gas cap is not vented...thats the difference...like a mower gas cap is vented....and some chainsaws too...on a trimmer you may turn it sideways or upside down so im guessing they made it that way so no gas will ever come out of your gas cap.
had a similar experience but was the spark arrestor. If it isn't the air going in check the air going out!
You are amazing I wouldn’t have never thought to do this my weedeater has been running just like you described in this video thank you so much
Glad I could help
Great work. Thanks for taking the time to explain the process
Glad it was helpful
very good in my opinion...but the camera has to get closer, to zoom in for us novices who cant ask anything in real time. And you know wht tey say about ''ASSUME''
Great video. Ill try the vent cap on one of mine that was used in really dirty conditions.
Love your trick to test lines… Thank you!
Thanks for your visit
Have a still weed trimmer it did almost the same thing, a guy who works on those, took and removed the muffler filter, never knew they had one, replaced the old one for free runs like a new one.
Going to get to work and fix mine too ! Thanks for the video !
Glad to help
Try putting premium gas in it or 50 1
Ur video help me to fix my leaf blower thank u
Very good demostration!
Thanks
Great job and thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge.
My pleasure!
Wow, he is a wealth of knowledge. Thank you.
Our pleasure!
Outstanding!!! This is an excellent video. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank You .. I think this may actually resolve the issues with my GT200.
I’m good on my dirt bike 4T motors, carb or fuel injection or even 2T race motors.
LOL, I didn’t expect to learn here, but sure enough, I did.
Thanks
Glad to hear that I could help
Thanks. Now I know what else to look for. Huge help.
Thank you, my strimmer is having the same problem so I will attempt this when ime free 🤞
EXCELLENT VIDEO.THANKS A MILLION MY BROTHER
Thanks for stopping by
Thank you I new to this small Eng repair
Welcome!
Thanks for the lesson
My pleasure!
Thanks buddy, a lot of great information… I love your enthusiasm ha ha ha
Thanks for stopping by
My Stihl does not have a vent. My Echo does just like this one. The Echo works fine. The Stihl just started giving me fits where it runs on choke but not off choke.
I will use as many of these techniques and see where it leads me.
I really like the part about the open flame and gasoline!!
Thank You.
