    Thanks for watching. This trimmer started and ran but it didn't run without the choke being on. The fix for it was a simple carburetor adjustment.

    After a season of frustrating trimming, barely keeping it running by feathering the throttle instead of letting it idle, I just happened to find this video. One d socket purchase and a single quarter turn off each screw, and my trimmer is running better than it ever had. Thanks so much for this! Explanation was perfect.

    That was easy. A fella in the neighborhood, whom I didn’t know, came by last year. His trimmer need adjusting. I did just what you did. He asked what he owed me, I told I’m nothing, just remember me and recommend me to your friends when they need repair.
    He gave me $20.00 , and sent me some customers.

    I always tell people to bring me the equipment to check it out before going to the dump. Most times I can fix it if it is like the one you just fixed. To much good stuff ends up in the landfill. I just got a beautiful 21 h.p. Craftsman riding mower the guy was going to cut up and take to the dump because the starter was unable to turn over the engine. I took it and put a cam shaft in it with a compression release that was not broken like the one in the machine. Works great now. He always kept it inside and was super clean. He said he did not want to spend any money on it. Thanks for great video's.

      Sometimes it's just not possible. I had a Troy bilt mower that had plastic internal gears that would slip. Had to completely disassemble motor to get to the gears and replace. $30 part and $200 small engine repair shop quote. $300 bucks for a new mower so I went new. It's not the consumers fault companies have switched to the throw away motto. I try to fix what I can but sometimes it's just not worth it

    I have to say that I love your videos my friend. I've been studying about small engines and watching videos for over 2 years now and no one has made me understand the workings of a small engine carb and its adjustments better than you have. I have a poulan pro blower that I've had nothing but trouble with after the first couple months of use and I just threw it in the shed. Ha Ha. Now I feel I can fix it. I was given one last spring. It needed a filter and filter cap plus an attachment. I put it in my parts because I didn't think I would ever get a doner. But about a month ago a neighbor gave me some of his old lawn service equipment. And one was an old Trory -Built weed eater of the same model. I used it for a doner and it runs like a new one. So I gave it to a friend that needed one. Now every time I go over to see him that's all he talks about. Good video!!!

    Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me understand the issues with my trimmer's carb adjustments...and SOLVE them in just a minute or two. Knowing which direction to turn the idle screw was key. Most carberators that I've worked with were the opposite of this one. BTW - If anyone reading this has gotten their idle screw out of adjustment...screw it all the way in (not too tight!) then back it out two FULL turns. That puts you in a pretty good starting position. Finer adjustments can then be made to make sure the trim head stops spinning at idle.

    Thanks for the video. I didn't have the specific D tool . So i found a piece of ice maker supply copper tubing , i think its 3/16" ID. Wallowed it out then put a needle nosed pliers to make the flat spot. Barely fits in the spot but worked well. Quarter turn ccw of the air cleaner side adjustment screw. In 5 minutes, I had it running better than ever.

    Thanks I’ll try these adjustments,
    As I have 5 or 6 of little Troy bit trimmers & constantly switching from one to the other to find one that runs decent to finish the yard work.
    Had one that I had replaced the primer bulb & fuel lines earlier & it ran good, not perfect but good enough for about 1/2 hour then cut off & would only stay running at top speed when it was chocked.
    After trying a few things, I grabbed another old troybit weed eater, had to clean the carb & replace the bulb on it as well, as it’s been sitting for a year or more.
    And it did the same thing, would only run when fully chocked.,
    I was not sure what the carb screws adjusted.
    I’ll try these tomorrow

    a few months ego I bought one of these brand new under the Craftsman name, it worked ok but took forever to start. Also I think I was using too old of fuel besides the carb needing adjustment from factory. I ended up returning it a week later (and the extra TrimmerPlus attachments) and buying an Echo PAR (without the extra attachments) with the same money. I technically have less now plus Echo attachments are more expensive if I need them again but this starts every time I don't forget to switch back the off button. I could've given it a better chance with the tuning and new fuel...

    I just remember something very helpful..... NOT running, turn each screw in count how many turns it makes. If you start at say 12 O'clock each half turn ins one. IE from 12 to 6 in one. Once all the way in. a STARTING POINT IS counter clockwise 2.5 TURNS. which is really 1 complete turn plus 1/4.turn. Do that to H and L and you'll find from there you'll only need a very small adjustment after that. I JUST did that worked like a charm, like brand new money

    Great instructional video. I had the exact same issue; I bought the single D tool and the adjustments went just like the video. I also realized the pre-mixed fuel I got was under-mixed (40:1 instead of the Troy Built 20:1 ratio...) UNFORTUNATELY, the next day the thing would not start at all. Very helpful. I really do hate this trimmer but trying to just get through another summer with it because I’m selling my house and won’t need it any longer. I just ordered the carburetor replacement kit and I’m glad it came with the adjustment screw driver thingy because i ALWAYS ALWAYS have issues with it dying or some other issue and your video was very helpful in showing how to make those adjustments. Hopefully with the new carburetor, it’ll be less of a pain in the ass. DONT BUY THIS TRIMMER, IT SUCKS!!

    I have a very similar model Troy-Bilt and am having the same issues--the trimmer will cut off once I move from 2nd to 3rd position. However, I noticed that when I try to depress the bulb, it doesn't "bounce back" to its original position which makes me think it's not taking in air to reinflate (if that's how these things work). Is this likely to do with the gas filter you mentioned in the video or am I overlooking something? Regardless, thank you so much for this video. It's always difficult finding a solution 1:1 with a problem. This seems pretty darn close though. This is also my 2nd TB trimmer after the first one "died" from a similar issue.

    I adjusted my weedwacker with new carb,it bogged down when choke off and throttle up.

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Remember that when try to start a 2 cycle machine and it doesn't start that it will flood the engine with extra fuel that will keep it from starting. Take out the spark plug and leave it for a day. Then the next day put the plug back in, and try to start it, BUT leave the choke off at first, then after it won't start, try using the choke according to the instructions. IF that doesn't work it means your settings for the carb won't work to help with an easy start and replacing the carb is recommended .

    • @HomeGaragechannel

      sorry I'm not aware of what the factory settings are. I can only guess that you've made adjustments and things are not going well, and need to reset. I would turn it to 1.5 turns and start over with your adjustments. If that doesn't work out, then there is another problem that tuning won't fix.

    Hello... I have a TroyBilt TB525C. I was using this trimmer with an edger attachment yesterday and after a while, the trimmer got very hot and it shut off. It has done this before but I was able to let it sit for some time and then it would start back up. I let it sit again but now I can not get the trimmer to start unless the choke is on. When I take the choke off the engine dies? Could overheating cause carburetor damage?

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's sounds like the carb is out of adjustment because it starts on choke and won't run off choke. A carb that isn't delivering enough fuel will cause a Lean condition and results in higher than normal engine Temps. Check the fuel filter in the tank and make sure it didn't fall off and if that's okay try adjusting the carb for more fuel.

    • @MarvinNicholson
      @MarvinNicholson 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HomeGaragechannel Thanks... I just change the fuel line and filter with new and also have adjusted the carburetor screw all over the place and no change... it will sometimes start with the choke on. I find if I open the choke and squirt some carburetor cleaner into the chamber it fires up for a second and then dies again. Could I need to replace the carburetor? I can find them on Amazon pretty cheap.

    Most of the trash-bound units I've seen have recoil starter problems -- rope hanging out, etc -- plus whatever the original problem was. People have spent way too much effort trying to pull-start a non-starting engine. Two issues or more for a low-value machine = no thanks. The more worthwhile 'projects'-- more premium units -- rarely reach that stage to begin with. Not quite a catch-22, but almost.
