Reasons why it’s dumb:
1. Trunks went from ss2 to ssb levels of power bc he was angry (bare minimum ssb)
2. It was obviously an asspull for merch
3. Fits the stereotype of there has to be a new transformation every season

Well, the thing is, is Trunks training constantly or briefly?? That does make a difference, kinda.
If it’s constantly, then that actually isn’t good. The reason why Future Gohan wasn’t as strong as we expect him to be is because he was constantly training and fighting, not letting his body take a break. He doesn’t gain anything if he doesn’t stop every once in a while.
If it’s briefly, then he definitely should be getting stronger. This is at least how I think it is.

@@brotbrotsen1100 Trunks (a once fan favorite re-entering the spotlight) with Broly’s eyes and a “different” aura. Trust me people bought it, they tried to make as cool as possible on a surface level without actually fleshing out the concept. Imo it looks like a fusion of false ssj and ssj2 which is neat design wise, just wish they did a single thing to make the form work narratively. Also I said this in another comment, it could possibly be a Berserk reference but that it itself is a major stretch. And maybe I’m the target audience but I think the ssj rage toys look pretty good especially if you enjoy Trunks’ redesign. On a surface level it could have been a really nice concept but it’s execution likely ruined anyone from supporting the form in the future. Lastly iirc the Japanese audience quite likes the form so maybe it’s just a western issue.

It was really just a way to power scale Trunks into the arc. It shouldn't have happened. Goku Black being so over powered shouldn't have happened.
Seeing you talk about timelines, makes me want to see you trying to figure out exactly is many timelines there should be using just what was shown in the Android and goku black sagas. Because even the number of time rings shown in the actual series was the wrong answer, it’s not 6 timelines, it’s much more than that.

If I were to give Rage any explanation, is that it’s essentially Vegeta’s rage enhanced power boost from Battle of Gods, a variant of grade three with the muscles condensed rather than simply expanded, and all of that is controlled and honed into a fine point, creating a ki density that creates blue plasma around the body from condensed lighting.
To summarize, Rage is a culmination of every mistake Trunks has learned from, Grade Three sacrificed Speed for Power, Rage condenses the muscles to get best of both worlds, Rage can blind someone like it did Gohan, so he controls and hones it into a weapon instead.
This may also explain why Gohan didn't get it, because Gohan never actually learned Grade Three.
The entire Goku Black arc had potential to be something cool! First hearing of this character, I thought it was Turles from the “Tree of Might” film, becoming canon. Then when he’s just Goku from the future, I became intrigued because I would’ve loved Goku just turning evil somehow. Once it’s all explained who he is, I just was annoyed because again I feel they could’ve gone so many other routes than what they chose, but the overall point is once I saw Trunks take that from, I decided to not watch Super any longer.
What’s even more upsetting is Future Trunks received some training from the Kais, so he doesn’t reach any new level of SSJ? The creators decided to just pull out some dumb form that makes no sense no matter what head canon a person tries because he has no idea what God ki is and therefore wouldn’t even know how to tap into it. The Kais iirc didn’t know about it, let alone how to train a person to gain that form

I think the only way u can explain the sudden appearance of the ssj rage is the God ki factor. Maybe because trunks is fighting among many beings with a huge God ki pool (Black, zamazu, Goku and Vegeta), he started to assimilate it. But, since he never actually trained with this power, and for being in a really stressful situation, he unlocked an imperfect God form based in pure rage. I know this is pure headcannon, since it was never said that trunk have god ki, but I think its an interesting explanation
I was about to say the same thing but I would add that Trunks did have a training session with Vegeta and Vegeta could have transferred some god ki to him the same way Goku training with Vegeta under Whis caused vegeta to unlock it
Even if it is canon, its still not a great explaination. The entire system of god ki negates the helf-form theory. Either its just super saiyan with god ki, or its just one or the other, but forms only work with a set amount of time. It's also super weird because he never really fought black prior to that fight, and in less than a day of fighting where he's mostly benched, there's no way he got that much.

Great video Sage, I tried to justify SSR and different transformations in general through the Toei/Bandai Cosmology rather than like appealing to the specific form itself. I probably didn’t do the greatest of jobs but everyone was kinda saying the same things so 🤷🏽♂️

Trunks on an eroded planet with like 30 people was able to enough energy to beat Zamasu. At the same time kid buu is pushing back a spirit bomb that was boosted by at least all of east and west city and the world of the Kai’s planet’s energy.

It's a double paradox, the cell that was defeated by gohan was the one that came back in time after killing a trunks that completed his mission in saving the past and defeating 17 and 18. if they aren't separate Universes then the trunks from super would have been killed by cell or defeated cell stopping him from coming back to the past to be defeated by gohan. Also in the past universe Krillin kills cell, if this isn't another universe then there wouldn't be a cell to hibernate to then attack future trunks to later come back in time to become perfect. Even if you want to say trunks training made the difference in why he's still alive for goku black to be a thing then your saying that that trunks had to come from a different timeline than cell implying that the branching is a different universe all together separate from the main timeline as none of the cell arc could happen once krillin destroyed the lab. if DBZ is the main timeline then once actions happen in their present it should effect the future, and if cell is from this universe then his timeline would have been stopped in place the moment DBZ krillin killed him, undoing everything about cell before enacting his plan to come to the past. Even 17 and 18 should be changed to the DBZ equivalent

Super late, but I wanna counter that timeline argument that the second to last guy brought up. Dragon Ball timelines just don't function in the way that he explains. Different timelines only are created when changes are caused. And only those changes are what differentiate that new timeline from the one that it branched off from. To put it into perspective, the main timeline(the one that we follow) would have ended up the exact same as the future timeline. But due to Trunks's interference, it changed. And that was the only way that it changed. Everything else that changed is the butterfly affect. To put it simply, something just being an alternate timeline doesn't mean that everything can be different. It's specifically everything that's impacted by what caused the branch in the first place, that changes.
He was half-right about different timelines being different universes too tho. They're actually different multiverses.

Gonna clarify this by saying that it's a dumb form in my opinion, but for dumb forms you need to use dumb logic to justify it all:
To use the biggest gymnastics I can (and I don't like using this as a reference), imma try looking at Super Dragon Ball Heroes (again it is a bad reference but also what better way to bs a form than by looking at the show that bs's most of their original forms)
Somewhere in that show, Vegeta gets a bunch of "evil ki" shoved into his body, has a character moment, then unlocks a new form by fusing that power with his strongest form, Super Saiyan Blue.
Contrasted with Trunks, he fights Vegeta and Vegeta beats up Trunks in Blue. If Vegeta gaining God Ki at all is anything to go by, it's not entirely unreasonable that some God Ki could have entered his body, then immediately after a character moment, Trunks gains an aura that has the "SSB-type" aura on the inside, just like Vegeta's SDBH form, fused with his strongest form at the time, SS2.
As far as Goku and Vegeta not really noticing the form itself the way they would SSB, he's not awakening any "new" level of power, he's just using the energy he's already been imbued with in SS2, so there wouldn't be a ki increase beyond just a standard rage boost, just a boost in output
I think everything else can generally be excused by just the powerscaling being so absolutely terrible in the Goku Black arc that I don't really know if any of it is all that reliable

my only head cannon is that rage is what id consider the form is what is after super saiyan 3. The way i see it is this is the form after ssj3 because all the other saiyans branched away from any forms after 3 which could be argued god ki to me is in its own tier of forms. Back to gohan after ssj 2 he moves his own tier of forms as well aka ultmate gohan then goes beast from there.

To be fair about the Trunks Novice argument, that might be coming from the Grade 3 fight where it was stronger than Vegeta's Grade 2 and possibly enough to give Cell trouble, but was too slow to actually put that strength to good use, which Cell ROASTS him about. Which yes, he learned to turn the state on and off to swap between a speed and power form like Goku does with God and Blue in the ToP, but there's no reason to use the Grade forms in general when he has SSJ2 outside of flexing to Vegeta that he learned from his screw up.

I'm nowhere near the level of DB experts, as many here. But, the only kind of argument I could see, would be Goku using a rage-like variant of SSJR in a movie, if we do count that. We hear it time after time that, for the Saiyan transformations, emotions towards a situation were the catalyst to awaken it, and training molded it, despite each Saiyan going their own way about it. Vegeta called out Trunks' variant of SSJ2 was wrong, like Wrath/Berserk form, in the Cell Saga, but it's the improved one in Zamasu's arc. As for the God ki, I could only think of the ritual of becoming a SSG in Battle of Gods, since Gotenks, Vegeta, Pan, Gohan, and Goku was apart of it, (And low key, may explain a lot about future transformations, since everyone was in a different, and he was a kid then), and would follow the previous point, to an extent. It's like how you said before, it's a specific, variant transformation, like Goku's SSJ3 was trained rage, Vegeta's Majin Vegeta was trained rage, but not really given, Broly's C-type/Berserk was untrained rage, and cause by his Daddy dying, Gohan's Beast untrained rage, but had an Android 16 moment again, UI is trained godly rage, to the point you're calm, Ego is trained godly rage, to the point you're hasty. I honestly think, it's due to the SSG ritual, that Trunks improved HIS variant of that transformation, but its lot of reaches, but at the same time, I can see it🤷🏾♂️.
The only thing that’s a pro with this “ANIME ONLY FORM” is that the build up for the form is good in my honest opinion. That’s it.

the spirit bomb makes no sense as stated in the Majin buu saga's End of Z spirit bomb, Gohan tells the supreme kai (if my memory is correct) that he can't use super saiyan while gathering energy because the super saiyan form is formed by anger and that he can't use it because like king kai says "you must be pure of heart to use the spirit bomb." So being angry would make trunks heart (if it was pure in the first place) to be unable to use the spirit bomb technique.
Vegeta : gets mad and cries over jealousy and become a super saiyan. He then ran off and appears with a form that needs 5 saiyans. I guess there’s nothing wrong with that
I think when people refer to Trunks being a novice, they dont mean he doesnt train, they mean he has much less experience in battles, especially close battles(he NORMALLY either gets stomped or stomps his apponent) he, compared to literally every other Z fighter, has less fighting under his belt by his time leaving in Z and still most fighters in super. His only fights never push him to be a smart fighter, only a pragmatic fighter.
I don't know if he mentioned it in the video, but let's say Trunks did unlock it with rage... Why didn't he unlock the form WHEN HE MOTHER AND HIS GIRLFRIEND DIED (I know mia didn't actually die but he thought she did). Feels like that was a perfect moment to unlock a rage-filled form

If I’m being honest, I thought it was a fine form for what it was when I first watched the arc back in the day. However, my feelings regarding the form have diminished overtime especially with it being done for the purpose of plot. It could’ve worked had it been due to his training with the supreme Kai (with Supreme Kai’s having divine/god ki such as with Goku Black). Though, he probably should’ve gotten God like he did in Heroes if the writers wanted him to keep up with Goku and Vegeta.
Ironically enough, Beast Gohan had better buildup and a better payoff.

The forms like ultra instinct and ultra were said to formulated based on their fighting style true and this was said by whis i don’t know what record deal piccolo had to sign with Sheron but super saiyan 1-3 seem like birth even after seem as though they have to be rituals and combined powers the conditions over times kept changing because they were running out of explanations but trunks form really has no justification but the reason they did that was to keep the story going of him saving his own timeline

With that being said, if I had to explain a theory about what the ssj rage form is, I would not call it rage but “False SSJ Blue.”
Let's start with the appearance of the form.
Blond hairs and a yellow aura, but under that aura is a mysterious looking blue energy that flows closely around his body like some form of ki shield/armor.
Do you remember the training goku and vegeta had in that strange room, before the arrival of freeza, which required them to keep their energy from leaking?
Once their fists connected, you could see blue energy surrounding them for a moment, we later learned that this energy was god ki.
I assume we see the same blue energy, aka god ki, on trunks in this form.
Let's continue with the transformation sequence:
1. Turning into a big bulky ssj grade 3 without pupils
2. Mysterious blue energy, aka god ki, appears
3. body mass shrinks down significantly.
Step 3 seems kinda reminiscent of how Goku got a lot leaner after the ssj god (red) ritual, which means god ki has a reducing/leaning down effect on muscles.
The verdict of my theory is the following:
Trunks somehow obtained god ki during his training with the Kais and or the fights with goku black, but has no mastery over it at all, he can't sense or control it.
Just the rage inducing dire situation pushed it out of him by coincidence, which caused this False SSJ blue transformation to happen. (like the false ssj transformation that happened in the slug movie with goku.)
The only forms that would be considered actual Martail Arts, is Ultra Instinct and Ultra Ego. Cause at least those can be implied with actual real life standards.
The DBS manga and anime have different continuities. The anime came out before manga. Basically toriyama gave toei(anime) and toyatoro(manga) outlines of what would happen in the series. But they got to fill in the margins. Which is why there are some differences between the manga and the anime. There is no perfected SSB in the anime. But it exists within the manga. Super saiyan God was all but put on ice in the DBS anime after the BOG recap until the Broly movie. But in the manga Goku and vegeta use it alot. The tournament of power in the manga is different then the anime.

I think he got it from fighting beings with God Ki just as he kinda takes people’s power for the spirit sword it can be a good form ngl story wise they just didnt handle it well the form itself is good the power amp put trunks on a higher level than ssb
The only version of Rage I slightly Liked was the first version of it when he loses the pupils, But After that it’s just SSJ2 with a Blue aura You can barely Tell he Is in the damn form.

Isn’t it kind of ironic how Majin Buu canonically had God ki from absorbing the Grand Supreme Kai and Future Trunks in Ssj Rage does not have any?
look up just random episodes of heroes online and in the corner it literally says "promotional anime" for the dragon ball heroes game. TSO you are so right rage is the downright worst form.
I wanna bring up another point and that's regarding the God Ki theory. It already has no merit as is cause of how Trunks was training but also who he was training with. Cause yes in theory, one *could* get God Ki from the Supreme Kai, but that doesn't work for one factor: Trunks is just stronger than him. How does this make sense? It's mainly due to how we all understand that weaker characters tend to benefit more from stronger characters a lot of the time. Sure we could have specific exceptions like the Spirit Bomb where it can be taught regardless of power level, but this is still holding true currently. Dabura was stated to be equal to Super Perfect Cell, which Shin is nowhere near the level of by the time of their encounter, let alone Kibito. And considering that Trunks was able to hang in there with Dabura and even managed to defeat him because of him unlocking Super Saiyan 2, it would only make logical sense that Trunks wouldn't really benefit from gaining God Ki from Shin because of how much weaker Shin was, especially at the time.
And before everyone else goes "Well Goku and Vegeta were around Trunks and he could've gotten it accidentally from them by absorbing it", that makes no logical sense because Trunks would have to actually understand how that works. Plus Trunks stated himself he can't understand God Ki, let alone understand it in the first place. In order for him to actually gain such divine power, he has to train with an actual *divine entity*, not someone that just happens to have God Ki by itself. Meaning Shin isn't powerful enough to help Trunks with such a task, let alone being alive to do so, and Goku and Vegeta can't give it to him cause it wouldn't make sense in any form of context outside of doing the Super Saiyan God ritual. The only logical way of him getting it would be through Beerus and Whis, but Beerus was dead by the time the Goku Black Arc surfaced and he didn't even know the energy existed until he went back to the past where Goku and Vegeta were. So like.... Yeah, that's all I have to say on that front. Let me know what y'all think tho.
I assumed it was common knowledge that the form made no sense they need a way to make trunks stronger in narrative so boom let’s give him a made up form never seen before that puts him on the lvl of God ki without using it or experiencing it any way but that’s Super all of it is random power ups with some explanation this isn’t one but hey it had some cool fight scenes
The only transformation that screams martial arts is ui too me rage was always weird sometimes it was weaker than ss3 then it others it was in par with blue if they would’ve said the blue part of the form was from the sword of hope and if they waited till the end
Only excuse I have for the form is that this is an alternate timeline. Even though we haven’t seen it before, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen in that timeline. And they grew present Trunks up in the latest movie so I dont think we will see future Trunks anymore. It is a send off form

The only thing that doesn't make sense imo is the amount of power he gets, but everything else makes. And the form looks cool af too.
