    Honestly idk why the “Goku is simple” take is so popular, they basically spell it out in the saiyan/frieza saga the character arc of his slowly accepting who he was as a saiyan. He purposely doesn’t have an obvious character arc in the Cell Saga because of Gohan and even than he grows as a character figuring out that Gohan is not about that fighting life, and the Buu saga also fixes a huge Goku character flaw AFTER the cell saga of his obsession with “the next generation”

      if you're talking about super than yes goku is simple because the writers don't know how to make a good character narrative for them to lean on all they can count on is the nostalgia in the manga and even in the anime. going back to goku his expertise and martial arts genius is not even emphasized, we don't even see his thoughts about the given situation.

    The problem is a lot of people base goku as a character off of either super or Z, the entirety of Z and super are snapshots of goku’s life for that particular time. If you were to compare start of Dragonball goku to end of super goku there’s literal decades of character development. We’re talking about watching a little kid turn into a man, then into a husband, then into a father, into a protector of earth, into a protector of the universe who can rival beings with the power of literal gods.

    • @kindlingking
      @kindlingking 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      His change in age has nothing to do with character development. Literally the only thing that changed about him is that he grew too old for a "pure hearted jungle kid outside his world" approach, so it got replaced with Goku obsessing over fighting strong opponents.

From doing things for his friends, to having a kid, sacrificing for said kid, to acknowledging after coming back to the sacrifice that he won’t always be around and letting the future developing itself. Say what you want about gt, but he stalled fusing with vegeta to allow his kids have a chance to beat shenron. Vegeta also had dope development into gt.

    Goku by all sense of the word was a dynamic character but also a flat character. Oh yeah I’m bringing in that high school literature knowledge back.
    He changed as the story of dragon ball went on. From a boy who lived in the mountains to a thrill seeker for adventure and as time went on he started encountering foes along the way. Which would fuel his desire for fighting leading to the world’s martial arts tournament. Getting humbled by master Roshi in the end who taught him there would always be a stronger person than him. Which this lesson taught to him would be beneficial to the threats he would face in the future. His personality doesn’t change much. He was always the light hearted, goofy, and thrill finder we know of today. I won’t go much over dragon ball since goku’s growth will always be a thing he’ll experience as time passes.
    Onto Z now we see Goku as an adult. His encounter and fight with Raditz shows his growth. Although it seems that his personality has changed somewhat due to age. Departing from his younger self’s innocence knowing that taking one’s life should not be the only answer and others can change in time. Although for Raditz, goku could not take the chance with how little support he had. This fundamental change in goku’s personality can arguably make Goku into a round character but I think not as in the future this part of him is died down a bit in Super. We can gloss over a couple things like Vegeta being spared, Goku showing some mercy against the ginyu force, Goku trying to show mercy to Frieza, and his training under the people of Yardrat.
    Now for the cell saga this is where we get into some real development. Goku and Gohan bond in the time chamber and Gohan shows off power Goku has never seen before. Goku after seeing this leaves the time chamber earlier and ready up against the battle between cell and him. He goes in the fight trying to guage the power of cell and then stops halfway through. Giving the chance to Gohan who’s now surpassed him. Although Gohan gets beaten up badly Goku still sees that spark in Gohan to go even further beyond. When he see Gohan can’t he tries to intervene but is stopped by the jr’s. Then Gohan unlocks super saiyan 2. Just skip half of that fight and now Cell is about to blow up and Gohan can’t decide what to do. So Goku intervenes now teleporting to Cell who’s about to explode saying his final goodbyes and then dies after teleporting away. After cell is defeated by Gohan who was encouraged by Goku, he sends his final message to the z fighters and his son passing off the torch to protect the world while he’s gone.
    Onto the buu arc. Fastfoward to Goku seeing Gohan failed in protecting the world and realizes Gohan isn’t up for it yet. Taking back the mantle of the sole protector of earth Goku fights against fat buu but still sees Gotenks as the future of protector of earth. Giving gotenks the chance to fight super buu but he fails. Then Ultimate Gohan gets some hits in and also fails. So Goku has to step in again and calls upon Vegeta for some help to go against Buuhan. Fused together to become Vegito and skip that whole fight where we get Goku saving fat buu who was absorbed. Goku sees the good in fat buu when others cannot. This shows his growth in character till now seeing even the supposed “greatest evil” in the universe as someone who can do good. Whole fight with kid buu later and now we got a Goku alive and ready to face against the threats to the universe and earth in the future.
    Battle of gods happeneds and nothing much. Beerus ain’t some big bad he’s just some guy looking for a rival who can beat him. Which Goku can relate to.
    Resurrection F and this arc shows that Goku has let his guard down for once. Due to the many years of peace and a strong opponent who wasn’t evil appearing he really hasn’t had any reason to be on alert.
    Then we got the other arcs and those are self explanatory. I’ve written enough for you guys to understand really.

      I'm sorry, but what the hell? Is this a late April Fools joke I'm not getting or do people actually believe Goku is some kind of well developed or even profound character? Not only is this not the case in the slightest, but it's actually insulting to all authors who put in time and effort to actually develop their characters. Toriyama isn't...well, wasn't one of those. He wrote comedy and was pretty good a it, especially considering he was coming up with this stuff on the fly.
      Kid Goku is a flat character. Any development he gets from his martial arts training or experience with other characters is superficial. He's goofy and adventurous, but can get serious when his friends are in danger. He's a kid, but don't be fooled! He's incredibly strong! And he has no clue what social norms are because he grew up in the mountains. That's his character in a nutshell.
      As Toriyama ages Goku up he stats to pull back on "innocent clueless kid" aspects of his character and firstly replaces it with saiyan lore (coming in terms with heritage and all), but it's not particularly explored. Remember Grampa Gohan, Goku's foster father killed by a big monster? Goku never learns he was the big monster untill Vegeta fight and even then he never dwells on it. In fact this incredibly important part of his character gets completely glossed over and forgotten should tell you everything about how profound Goku's character is.
      He also doesn't spare Piccolo and Vegeta out of mercy, but rather to have a strong opponent he can later fight, so this merciful Goku thing has no roots. Goku was always merciless to his foes but also incredibly selfish, which is alright for a kid, but not so much for an adult with two kids. Yet this is the trait Toriyama decided to latch on post Saiyan Arc. Goku wants to fight strong opponents and he doesn't care about consequences. Remind me, why didn't Goku and the others stop Dr. Gero before he even built his androids? Did they have a valid reason or was it just "want go fight strong guy now!"? If Goku was actually against this idea, that would've showed his development, because he just learned (with Frieza) some people are just evil and have to be dealt with before they can cause too much harm.
      Oh and don't get me started on Gohan. They spent what was that? A year? Together inside time chamber, Goku even stopped training at one point, yet not even once did he tell Gohan about his plan. And what kind of plan it is to prepare for a battle with a genocidal bugman only to forfeit at the last moment and put his kid to fight instead out of nowhere. And give a damn bugman a full heal on top of that! I don't give a crap about "Gohan's hidden potential" or "only Gohan could've beaten Cell!". No. Gohan might've been the strongest by the end of the arc, but by the beginning of the next one EVERYONE is either reached or surpassed that level with Goku himself getting not only SSJ2 but also SSJ3. And considering Goku failed to pass the torch and had to return anyway, what was the point of putting a little kid (he's 4 during saiyan arc) though all of that? For what?
      And then there's super...oh my kami. They realised something wasn't working and brought the "clueless kid" shtick back... despite Goku being a grandfather. Yet fans will still argue how Goku was actually preparing everyone for future arcs in advance and every of his idiotic decisions was brilliant because it worked out (because plot bailed him out).

    • @castform7
      @castform7 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kindlingkingI get where you're coming from on a lot of this but I take issue with the Cell part. Yes, Goku just thinking his son is like him and would want this big fight and thus not understanding him is a flaw. One that is drilled into him immediately afterwards. One that he lays out his life for without the plan of coming back. And yes everyone surpassed the level Gohan was at in the Cell games in Buu but that's over the course of 7 years. In Cell, Goku and Gohan had a year while the rest of them had a week. At that time, no one except for Gohan could beat Cell.
      I also don't understand why trying to find deeper meaning in Dragon Ball is "insulting" to other authors. I'd get it if people were actively denouncing other anime in favour of DB but we're judging DB by itself here. Just because people see a lot more meaning to Goku than others doesn't mean they're spitting in the face of other characters or stories. Honestly it's more likely we'll try to find more depth in them too if we can do it for Goku.

    A mistake a lot of people make is thinking flat characters never develop or never evolve. In reality, they can and do, but the core of the point of the character is a pillar or rock that stays consistent at the core of the physolodphy and foundation the character.
    Goku is a flat character, but that isn't the same as saying he has 0 development. It's just that his development isn't the core function of his character.
    Goku's evolution is deep and narratively profound rather than being his character is about how he becomes a fundementally different person at the center of his function as a character.

Goku shows he still has the struggles he couldn't change. If we want Goku to get to an endpoint since The black Frieza arc is already the end of Z then we need Goku to have an easy and simple end to his character. Not an overly complex ending with a big bang. People just misunderstood Goku from Z to Super.

By the end of Z, Goku character was "completed" or at least the next step for him was 'carefree acceptance', and GT Goku embodies pretty much perfectly. Say what you want about GT, but the characters are in continuity with Z.

    I always liked goku, but definitely appreciate him more now. But the video also kind of makes me feel a little indifferent about one of my favorite goku moments in Super. The moment he learns black killed alternate timeline chichi and goten and rages and afterwards looks down on a defeated black, contemplating whether he should kill him and, in the end, giving into rage and going for the kill(only to then have his arm caught by black). I've always been like "look at how mad me was! He didn't even want to kill frieza in the end, really, but he did want to kill Black!" It was like what made the moment cool was it was kind of out of character. But now, after really looking back at the frieza moment, the moment with Black does kind of sort of feel like character regression in a way.

    • @salaga6574
      @salaga6574 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Nah, Like TSO said, goku eventually learns that sometimes people have to die, whether it’s cell, Buu, or any of Bobbodys minions minions goku still kills people or attempts to kill people after beating frieza. It’s one of those things where Black and Zamasu were literal scum who wiped out an entire timeline worth of mortal life, there was 0 redeeming them

    • @Hellothere_RANDOM
      @Hellothere_RANDOM 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Hard disagree, thats actually in character for goku. After frieza he realized that some people will have to die whether he likes it or not. Black killed his family even if that version of his family was from a different timeline, goku gave into his rage with the intent to kill Black. To back this up during the T.O.P in the anime, goku essentially says he is not a hero of justice or anything of that sort, but anyone who hurts his family, friends, or planet, they were going to pay. So that moment was a very in character moment for Goku.

    One of Vegeta’s peaks was when he finally accepted that Goku is the strongest, only to go back and forth with Goku in Super, he seems so humble in the End Of Z, and he doesn’t seem to show any kind of that character in Superhero.
    Goku had an entire character arc from the beginning of Dragon Ball to the End Of Z where he accepts his Saiyan roots after being told he, the purest soul in all of Dragon Ball, is part of a genocidal race so terrible, they’re worse than all the villains Goku has defeated.
    Sure, Vegeta’s development is iconic, but Goku’s development has been under looked for years that it deserves the praise it gets.
