People who criticize Dragon Ball for its "lack of plot and character development" are the same people who will praise complex shows (HxH, JJK, AoT) without even understanding the basic development and themes of Dragon Ball.
Usually my issues with DB critiques aren't necessarily the critiques themselves, but the people that make them because you can tell they don't know what they're talking about.

@@A_Sketchy Exactly, it's why I'm a big fan of more simple stories. Because there can be hidden layers in them without the story telling you how complex it is. I still love complex stories like HxH and JoJo, but like simple or "generic" storytelling is not even bad.

I think the reason people say that no other character in DragonBall has character growth is because the majority of the z fighters are already complete characters in Z. That's why people don't know if there are any other characters besides Vegeta and Gohan that had character development. Since the majority of the Z fighters' character development is in og dragon ball which a lot of people never watched, including myself.
Also, homie should've watched all of Og DragonBall, then all of Z before making this video honestly.

Yeah, Goku going from killing opponents without issue to wanting to spare even the most cruel of villains, and going from rejecting his Saiyan heritage to embracing it and becoming the legendary Super Saiyan, both show that he’s definitely had a lot of character development throughout the series. Yeah he’s still basically the same person he’s always been outside of those few things, but a character can have development without them entirely changing as a person; anyone who can’t see that has little to no media literacy.

I think the only time Goku has outright won a fight *by himself* in Z is the fight with Burter. Every other time he either loses/dies or wins with assistance of varying levels. It's not even like you need to look into the subtext of the show, it's right there for you to see.

Great video. DB Z introduced me into the genre. I was so close to visiting Japan one point myself. I had experience with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama San. can never get behind people saying goku will always win at the end of the day. he lost to vegeta twice, died fighting raditz, got washed before going ssj against frieza, lost literally every single fight in the android/cell saga, and got folded by buuhan. i'm pretty sure he has around a 50% win rate in Z.
Ain’t no way you said he lost twice to vegeta. If you’re referring to their fight in the buu saga as the second one that’s a crackhead take. Vegeta HIMSELF wouldn’t consider that a win since goku could have literally skinned him alive at that point in time but decided to “indulge him” anyway. That’s why vegeta was so mad when he found out about ssj3 . That shit was never a “fight” , it was goku playing with vegeta like a child and then vegeta doing some snake shit after they mutually decided to end the fight. Goku giving cell a senzu bean is a great showing of goku’s character at the time with him thinking selfishly and that gohan would also enjoy it since didn’t understand him right after that goku realizes his mistake in that gohan doesn’t like fighting and was gonna break the tournament rules to help him ultimately leading to him sacrificing himself as a way to not only atone for his mistake but also show his growth as a father and character in general
I swear whoever made that video, (that TSO_Sage reacted to), has zero comprehension of media literacy unless it’s LOUDLY BOLDLY telling what they are feeling, thinking, or what it is all about. Subtlety and thematic storytelling is a foreign concept to them. This is just not about liking an anime or not, no this just shows they have poor attention span and general misunderstanding of cause & effect and different kinds of conflicting interests leading to key plot points. I think a lot of times bro people when the answer ain't obvious can't see shit when it comes to storytelling and art. And say it's dumb down or this and this stuff. Not using context clues, oberservation? Understand author intent, analysis, etc. I can tell because these people sucked in English class during essays and work. But in the same breath say and obvious or dark theme being told and it's in your face, and be like ohhh good writing. It's funny because I feel most people give Goku more flack for one of the few times he was super prideful which was in someone other than himself his son, but these same people also are always Vegeta lovers or in his case gave Vegeta props for writing. When Vegeta makes way more detrimental choices consistently throughout the series for Saiyan pride, but he is not given as much shit as Goku. In fact, they say that is just the beauty of Vegeta's writing. This is crazy because Goku realistically was ignorant to his mistake or too optimistic at times for the things he gets trashed on the most, Vegeta the smarter of the two knew full and well every time and just said fuck it I do what I want which objectively is worse.
