If a band couldn't perform live in Australia they had no chance of making it. Didn't matter how good the studio version was.
It was always trial by live performance, wasn't it? Had to hit the pubs and clubs before a label would even look at you and that is how it should be.
He'll yes u couldn't sing live then you were gone just look at milli vanilli they lip synched and almost got shot nowadays you do it it's accepted ah the good old days indeed
Back in the day bands had to have a solid following before a label would sign them. The only way a band would get a following was to play live....well. Chisel are the epitome of great Aussie pub rock multiplied by international talent

Couldn't have put it better myself... saw Cold Chisel many times... since their early days... saw 'The Last Stand' tour... saw Jimmy Barnes 'Back for a Flash'.... first vinyl I ever bought was Cold Chisel 'Barking Spiders Live'...... my mum was the Clinical Nurse Consultant for Westmead Hospitals Adolescent ward.... and JImmy would drop by to see the kids.... (got jealous those days when she told me lmfao)..... he is a lovely man... and him and Mossy were a duo that will be remembered forever.... no matter their falling outs or drama..... ROCK AND ROLL BABY.......

Apart from sheer vocal prowess, the arrangement itself and the fact that this is live. How about we talk about the out and out professionalism of 3 elements.
1) the stage/road crew. For ensuring Jimmy stayed on.
2) the band generally playing to Jimmy ad- libbing it out in the crowd - I mean he looked like he was gonna throw a punch early.
3) Mossy. Deadset. Jimmy is climbing back onto stage and Mossy is free-wheeling vocally and on the guitar. Then Jimmy (2 bottles of vodka in) drags him to the ground and Mossy doesn't miss a chord whilst being hung over or sitting on his arse. Brilliant.
What you probably don’t understand is Chisel lived and breathed pub gigs… from school halls to taverns and pavilions they started when they were 16+ years of age… over 20 years of surviving it all… that’s what made them so great.
You are 100% correct The Greatest Rendition of Wild Thing EVER….. absolutely killed it…. And don’t forget IAN MOSS’s fantastic guitar work and vocals…..

I remember a story from Peter Garret from Midnight Oil, saying Chisel stopped in while the Oils were recording Bird Noises, and both bands just jammed all night, to the early hours. Their partying was drinking and playing their favourite songs.
To some degree back in the day folks wanted to play music...
To some degree a lot of folks these days want to be stars...

First time hearing them. They definitely took a song I knew as a "young" soul and made it a new song I can love all over again. They definitely have that passion you spoke about. They have talent, you have a group here that doesn't need autotune. They will go off and just jam! I love when you get the full experience. They love what they do and are bringing you in. They also do a good version of Knocking on Heaven's door and Ian Moss (lead guitarist) does a few amazing versions of Georgia on my mind
I agree best version of this song I have ever heard. Cold Chisel smacks my DNA right in the head.
I've always considered this a duet between Jimmy's vocals and Ian's guitar. Sometimes doing a call and response, and sometimes 'singing' in unison with each other. And sometimes Ian Moss takes over the vocals without me even noticing, while Jimmy is caught up in the crowd.
This is one of my favourite performances of all time too, and it's hard to get close. As far as Cold Chisel goes, there's a live version of Bow River with a harmonica player where the music is out of this world.

In their LA trip, the label tried to "manage" and "style" them for the US market. The engineers did a bad job re recording their album, then suggested Chisel weren't really that good. So they came home, and Jimmy wrote: "You got nothin' I want."
That’s why they didn’t hit the US market…. In the end Jimmy told them to shove it where the sun don’t shine and wrote “ You got nothing I want “ … what a shame the US music lovers didn’t get to witness this live…. it was AMAZING!!!!

Jimmy HAS recovered very well. He's doing physio in a hotel pool in Thailand with his lovely wife Jane. He's writing a book, and some music. Jimmy's a national treasure.

As someone with a brother 14 years older than me who is obsessed with anything Jimmy Barnes and Cold Chisel, I’ve listened to almost every song they’ve released both as a band and solo and probably know far too much about them for someone my age, but I have to say this and Bow River from the Ringside show are definitely favourites as far as live performances go 👌🏻
Can we also appreciate that up until he jumped into that crowd, Jimmy carried that bottle of vodka everywhere with him on stage 😂
What you have to realise that all Aussie Bands have come from the Aussie Pub scene.....from Cold Chisel, INXS and Midnight Oil & AC/DC they all began their journeys in Australian pubs. (public bars) back in the 70's. We also had Countdown back in the 70's, an ABC TV show on Sunday nights hosted by the hapless Molly Meldrum who was one of the best Rock promoters in Australia, he used to go to all the Pubs in Melbourne and if he liked what he heard, he'll letting everyone know about it, and he knew when a song was going to be a huge hit. Great times.
I was a 16yo high school student working house security at the Melbourne venue for this tour, and was seen there by some of the girls at my school. By coincidence, I was scheduled for shoulder surgery the next day. When I returned to school the next week with my arm in a sling, the sympathy for what they thought was the cause was worth all the discomfort I had.
Lol. What makes this performance even more extraordinary is the amount of booze he would have smashed down his gullet beforehand. Most mere mortals would be struggling to walk, let alone string a sentence together and sing. It was back in his “couple of bottle of Vodka” per concert days.

I wish people would not compare Jimmy to FAMOUS OVERSEAS artists. He is so much more, he can sing so many genres is amazing and he sounds like Jimmy Barnes that's it. He has never copied anyone else's voice or tried to sing like someone else. And at the age of 66 he still sounds the same depending on what he is singing and I think he has earned the right not to be compared. He is just a GREAT singer in his OWN RIGHT. I think he should be the bar people are compared against now. But that just my unprofessional opinion. 💯❤️🔥

@@wren1960 i have noticed this seems to apply mostly to Americans because their radio play was very much controlled by the record labels. They didn't play anything that strayed from what would make them $$ or fit what they wanted to sell. Where in other countries like Australia and New Zealand we got to hear every genre available and consumed it like a sponge. I am in my 50s and my children were exposed to everything from Metallica to RunDMC or Andrea Bochelli to Dixie Chicks. There was no genre that wasn't worth listening to. Where that doesn't happen in The USA. They have missed out on so much.

Nothing on this planet quite prepares you for seeing Jimmy Barnes live for the first time. I remember getting my hair (Back when I actually had some) blown back from his vocals at a small country pub - standing 10 feet from the stage and the speaker stack - I'm pretty sure a bit of pee came out LOL. Can't take anything away from Mossy in this one either - killing it. If you want to see another amazing Australian band that are better live than studio - check out "The Teskey Brothers - Hold Me (Live at the Forum)" . An amazing live performance - but in an entirely different way to this.
Tremendous performance. Cold Chisel is ridiculously good. Jimmy was a force of nature back in the day. We missed out on some great music here in the US as evidenced by this live performance. I’d say some of SRV’s performances are at least as good as this and Janis and Beth Hart and the Who back in the day, and probably any of the classic rock bands in their prime but that takes nothing away fr this performance. It was great.
The significance of the Last Stand is Chisel at the height of their first era ( 74 - 83 ) saying goodbye, at the height of their popularity. Barnsy and Mossy both pursue successful solo careers thru th rest of the 80s and into the 90s. Their popularity never waned, like an old trusted friend always you would hear on FM radio. And so we were bless with their return on more than one occasion into the 2000s. This band are as significant to Aussies as ACDC, yet in some ways more...yet never receiving the international accolades so deserved. Their 20 or so well known hits are all so distinct from each other. If you want to see that scope of flavors they offer. ONE LONG DAY / KHE SAN / FLAME TREES / STAR HOTEL / CHEAP WINE / SATURDAY NIGHT / I could mention 6 or 7 others but never mind.

Cold chisel are Aussie legends. I grew up listening to them because my mum loved them. Hearing jimmy Barnes sing when I was a kid made me love singing. He's one of my favorite all time singers. And he just seems like a cool dude

you take me back to "experiencing " chisel at a concert at narrara [north of sydney " back in the 80's i think it was .it was a weekend gig and chisel were one of the bands.what made them so good? it was their energy and jimmy's ability to connect with the crowd and REALLY enter in ,like no other i've come across, and take you with him .[i think it came out of the aussie pub rock where they really learned to perform live,where you had to give everything or you got the bullet ] it was a time to really let loose .
we expected jimmy and the band to give everything ,nothing held back ,and i think the band expected the same from the audience .it some ways on the surface it was as rough as guts and in another way their was a real honest purity about it . i was a fantastic experience where you could really blow the cobwebs out.
My jimmy ,.not only was Barnsey rocked this song but I also love your passion to these songs. Look at the great time people have when their isn't a bloody cell phone in sight.❤Thanx Drama,your my favourite reactionist.

Jimmy is next level. Yeah he was heavy into the drinking at this stage, but WOW, what a performance! Mossy never disappoints, the whole band just gave everything in this fantastic show!!

I have only been watching all his new stuff of the past 4 years or so....but I so appreciate where he cut his teeth on those wild old days lol. This is by far the best version of the Troggs "Wild Thing." Jimmy is at his drunkest and best. The ad libbing and creativity. Vocally, Jimmy was in point at this concert. This is why we are always astounded and excited when the rest of the world discovers Chisel and this creation we love and know. This is world-class. Everyone else missed out when Chisel didn't go global.
Another really passionate performance by Jimmy is the cover of 'Change is gonna come' - obviously a song you will know from the legendary Sam Cooke - the live video quality is not great but the performance is unreal.

I’m always ready for more Chisel…. If you don’t mind a good cover then try Jimmy and friends singing Knocking on Heavens Door, a Bob Dylan tune. It was from a tribute concert for Andy Durant, an Aussie Musician who passed away at 24 or 25 from melanoma from back on 20 August 1980. You may recognise Ian Moss and Jimmy singing, but if you are willing to give it a try, I can’t wait for you to watch Jimmy and the late Renee Geyer sing together. She recently passed away on 17 January this year. I just love that moment when Jimmy takes the microphone off the stand and harmonises with her. RIP to Renee.
I was at this concert right up front as I always was. This COMPLETELY blew my MIND 🤯
They did another mental version on German television in 1982 called ROCKPALAST. The crowd went mad and clapped and chanted Chisel for 8 mins for an encore

Hey, it's only taken 45 odd years for America to discover CHISEL. The great Ian Moss. My first ever concert 1982 Logan Campbell Center Auckland NZ. Circus Animals Tour.
About 8 yrs ago I sat my 7 yr old Granddaughter on my lap & showed her Tina & Ike Turner in 1971 live on stage with the girls absolutely laying & slaying LIVE with amazing vocals & moves !... As you said brother, they left it all on stage like Rent Money was relying on it BECAUSE IT WAS !

The greatest rock performers in the world grew out of bands playing in pubs right here in Australia. They had to capture their (usually drunk and disinterested) audience pronto and keep them captured. The best of the best you just watched ply their craft after years of playing in that environment.
Yea, they were interesting days. Remember, most teenagers had a garage band in Australia and talent tended to rise to the top. An artist was given exposure, if they really had exceptional talent. Today, as you know is driven by technology, not driven by emotion.

Ohhh I miss the old days of watching these boys live. Wild Thing was never sang the same way at each concert I went to. The only constant was Jimmy being drunk, yet never missing a beat and the band played on never knowing what he would do next,
In those days Jimmy was drunk as a skunk when he performed yet the band always knew when to take over and when to back off. Incredible understanding of each other. They never disappointed me be at a concert hall or a pub. Mor than 40 years later Jimmy is clean living and singing just as good as ever.
Totalky agree that in here in Oz if you can't do it live you don't survive, and the Australian pub rock bands that survive(d) are brilliant.
BTW there are some bands around now that can leave it all out there. From Mexico is The Warning, 3 piece (all sisters) who rock.
From Japan you really should check out Band-Maid, try there live videos. I'd suggest Play (live), Manners, or Choose Me.

I had the absolute privilege of seeing Cold Chisel many times. Towards the end of Chisel, Jim was NOT happy. I saw him at The Tarmac Hotel in Laverton. He drank a bottle of vodka and a bottle of Drambuie ... interspersed with cans of VB. His capacity for booze was insane (fuelled by a truckload of speed sure, but still ...)

I was at one of the last "Last Stand" concerts at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on 19th November 1983. Great concert and a fitting farewell to one of Australia's best Rock bands.

Ditto mate. I've never been a great fan of Wild Thing but this is something else. You should react to the whole Ringside concert. You will be blown away by the band's performance and the talent of each member. My 3 favourite bands are Cold Chisel, Led Zeppelin and Metallica. All are great live and all are a polished unit as a band but with individual talent right across the board. Chisel has been going for 50 years this year and have still not produced a bad song. A new subscriber from Oz watching you discover Chisel like i did in my early teens.

Indeed they did but to be fair he did turn up blind drunk and smelling of vodka and unfortunately didn’t make the most professional impression which definitely worked against them.
@@Dr_KAP that’s BS, if you read his book and interviews, their US management was more interested in DJ dog party than Cold Chisel. Chisel were getting a following and management couldn’t be bothered in showing up to their shows. At a great expense Chisel tore up their US contract and return home.

Saw them live in Griffith on their break up tour in 1981. You had to be 18, so I had to sneek in as I was 3 months shy of turning 18, but it was great 👍 love it ❤
I've somehow missed this one But this is the greatest cover of wild thang I've ever seen . I watched it a couple years ago and it blew me away . Jimmy Barnes is one of the greatest vocalist ever . And I'll quote Brother Drama and say they getting down to the get down .
