Good policy on the free version. Create the community, get them profitable, sell them products to increase skill and profitability. This is the kind of business I like.

True, just learning it myself for free!😍 I did see, however, more turorials done in after effects, but I am trying to do the stuff from AE in DR. Green screen and it's controls are really straightforward and easy. It's the effects like "superhero landing" and "cutting limbs away" stuff that I'd like to learn in DR.

This is exactly what PhaseOne with Capture One did. And than ...
they skipped the express version for sony. and than ...
the Upgrade from express (free) to Full Version for 1 specific brand went from 99€ up to ....
... 249€!!! They completely freaked out. 249 just for Sony cams of course. A price jump by 150%!!!
      So I use luminar now.
But I also use BM Studio now with its speed editor.

00:13 🎮 The video is sponsored by Nvidia, showcasing a Razer Blade 17 with an Nvidia RTX 3080 TI laptop GPU for enhanced performance in creative applications like DaVinci Resolve.
01:20 💻 DaVinci Resolve offers a free version with no catch, but requires a decent system to run. It's recommended to have a device with a dedicated graphics card for optimal performance.
02:03 🖥 The free version supports hardware-accelerated encoding for faster rendering, but only with one GPU. The paid studio version allows for multiple GPUs.
02:44 🔄 Free version allows unlimited usage and all future upgrades and updates are included. It can be used offline without any online DRM requirements.
03:27 🚫 Watermarks appear in the free version only when using Studio-only features, providing a clear indication of where the watermark will be applied.
03:40 🖼 The free version has a maximum resolution limit of Ultra HD (3840x2160) for both timeline and export quality, but can import higher resolution footage.
04:09 📏 Custom aspect ratio timelines are available in the free version, allowing for creative video formatting (landscape, portrait, square, etc.).
04:35 🎥 While higher frame rate footage can be imported, the free version is limited to a 60 frames per second export capability.
05:17 📷 The free version is primarily designed for consumer-level 8-bit footage and may not handle higher bit depths as effectively.
06:13 🎬 Transitions, titles, and visual effects in the free version are similar to those in the paid studio version. Some effects, like noise reduction, are limited tothe studio version.
07:38 🌈 Color grading capabilities in the free version are extensive, offering control over highlights, shadows, contrast, colors, saturation, and more.
09:45 🔊 The Fairlight system for audio controls, including effects like noise reduction, compression, and pitch adjustments, is available in the free version.
11:47 📤 The free version allows for exporting in various formats with control over quality settings like bitrate. Custom export presets can be created for efficiency.

I used the free version for a couple of years alongside a prosumer (it reckoned) video editor, which later went subscription. I bought the Speed Editor with 'free' Studio included. I then dropped my old software. I probably wouldn't have paid £280 for Studio. After enlarging my C partition on my SSD, for some reason Resolve reverted to the free version. I continued working on a project, but I was shocked to see the 'watermark' appear on many parts of the video. I had no idea I used the extras so much. Studio is much better, even for a keen amateur, than the high quality free version. Whether it is worth the money depends on how much disposable you have. I paid £290 for the Speed Editor (excellent bit of kit - wouldn't be without it) and Studio. A bargain. I'd like to try the DaVinci keyboard, but the price is out of reach for me.
For information: there was no problem in upgrading to Studio the second time. I downloaded it after entering the code, although I had to delete the free version first.
I'm a big fan of Resolve. I had no trouble adjusting to the interface, the same problems with all changes of video editing software, and I've used a few. But I'd suggest neither is the best choice for beginners. Lots of 'How-to' videos on TH-cam from very knowledgeable and helpful people like yourself, Alex. Thanks so much for your efforts.

Great video. I recently 'upgraded' my home studio set up by buying a second hand mac that had already had all the hardware upgrades done for video editing. I was going to use final cut pro but have chosen resolve instead. What I am surprised with is that it wont import 'old school' avi files. I don't know if that is due to avi files not being compatible with the mac or if it's an issue with the software itself? Thankfully it will work with my new camera but a real shame I can not edit a load of footage I shot a couple of years ago with my old one.

Thank you! Answered my question whether it was worth buying a second hand Pocket 4k camera without the Resolve studio code, or if I should purchase new which includes the paid studio version of Resolve. Clearly I need the paid version to use a 10 bit 4:2:2 camera properly, cheers !

Excellent overview! Mind sharing the different Nvidia vs AMD GPU on DR (CUDA, tensor)? They are about equal or is one well better than the other? Thanks.

Yep, it is free. I have been using Davinci Resolve for probably 4 years. I started with the free version, but moved onto the Studio version when I bought my first Blackmagic Design Pocket Camera 4K. Later, I bought an USRA Mini 4K Pro...and yes, they still have a free version. I have also bought a 6K version of the pocket camera, an ATEM Mini, the EVF for the URSA mini, and several different other accessories including SDI and HTML converters. And still, there is the free version. It does make you wonder how Blackmagic Design makes their money by just giving away their editing software. LOL.

Resolve is amazing. I switched from a pirated Premiere years ago to free software so that I am not stealing from people. I tried a lot of other software which I will not name since I do not want to sound as if I am hating it. However, only Resolve game me what I needed to replace Premiere when I was growing as an editor. Now, when I have actual serious projects to develop, I am sooner or later going to buy the premium version knowing it already gave me its money's worth a long ago.

I have an issue with certain title effects. I'm trying to use the Film Strip effect on a title that overlays a picture. When I add the transition, it completely blacks out the background. If you have a solution to this, I would be grateful.

I am a real beginner at video stuff but have been a professional recording engineer and singer songwriter for decades. Looking forward to seeing all your content.

My biggest complaint with the free version (which is fantastic, BTW) is that it would stop and stutter during playback. For the most part, this issue went away when I got the paid version. And, come on, under $300 for this software with free updates is an amazing deal. Adobe Premiere wants you to pay them every month!

It's more or less negligible when you're recording in studio/indoor. It's however more useful for people recording audio outside.

BlackMagic Design also make some truly amazing (and expensive) hardware that really big studios use. That's clearly their bread-and-butter. :-) So making a free version of Resolve to get people to use their tech and get into videography... pretty much a no-brainer.

Great insight, and will check out more of your videos...............do have a question/problem with Resolve though that maybe you can shed some light on: I import a Mavic Air 2 video, color grade it, then set the playback to 50% to slow it down, plays fine, but when I render the output the program chops off part of the footage. Is there some setting I am missing, or is this a limitation of the free version? Thanks!

2:22 - do you mean if I have Studio, my 4k H264 10bit from DJI Mavic Air would work well and fast on timeline?
My rig is 5950X, RTX 3060 12GB, 32GB RAM, 1TB Nvme drive and still my 4k vids on timeline are soooo slow... Even I swith to timeline proxy resolution quarter...
    It really irritates me...

I started using at v.18 (free) just a few weeks ago. I was kind of anxious because of a learning curve that i havent run into yet.
When ya got Alex and Ferris and others showing you how to do this my confidence rose immediately. The way processes are explained here with Alex is brilliant. I say 'hey i want to try that','how do i use this tool' . I look alex up and whoop there it is and i reproduce what he did in a super short amount of time. This free version is plenty for me throwing titles in, editing game play, slow mo and tracking. Its a gem
