    The fear of Western sanctions is what's keeping Indian car companies from expanding to Russia. I'm sure Mahindra & Tata use Western financial institutions even when they do business in non-Western regions like Africa & West Asia.

    I think Mahindra and Tata took the best decision for their bottom line. They are capable of breaking into the American and European markets, so it would have been an unwarranted risk.

      They aren't yet capable to break into US market european market is just shadow of it. The stringent regulations and hostility towards other brands especially asians is predominant in there plus any automobile related rule or law passed in the US gets accustomed into worldwide car trend. Our two brands have miles to go before passing their safety net, our 5star rating is still Global NCAP not the actual NCAP, realistly speaking don't expect any of our vehicle there anytime soon.

      Sanctions will apply to Tata and Mahindra because they are associated with the sub brand plus their financial access will be permanently cut off from SWIFT if they did that since both Tata and Mahindra has other brands in other markets their government can easily block Tata’s and Mahindra’s access to other markets.

    Real reason is the Sanction Regime of USA. Indian cars are highly dependent on US and European component IP. Manufacturing can be anywhere, but the IP is generally US/European. Example: BOSCH. For example, as recently as 10 years ago half the tata car in terms of VALUE was Bosch + Fiat technology.

    I’ve lived in North America since 2005. These people like big, safe and powerful vehicles along with good looks. I don’t think Indian companies have many vehicles fulfilling all the criteria except JLR. So I think we should focus more on capturing Russian and Central Asian markets and worry less of the west.

    One of Mahindra groups company operates in Russia, and after the war also they did not pulled their hanks back even after the criticism by many forign media houses. So I am sure just after the end of war they will launch their vehicals in Russia. And they are trying to launch since 2019 but then corona came and the plan got postponed.

    Chinese cars have developed a lot and we Indians buy them in Middle East
    Especially Haval,Changan,Geely are one of the top notch cars from China
    They have less thirsty engines,feature loaded and bigger cars
    If they launch in india they may rule the market like in mobile phones

    Indian car brands can't compete with Chinese makers. The indian auto industry exists because of the Western technical inputs. Besides that if tomorrow the indian govt decides to allow chinese carmakers into the market they would literally smoke tata and mahindra. Russia will be a level playing field for Chinese and Indian brands. So no question that indian car makers will have a hard time coping with that.

They always feel that their energy can compete with China to become the boss of Asia. A $3 trillion economy competing with an $18 trillion economy is a ridiculous story.     I know the stigma attached to Chinese car but they do make some good car actually.. So, people just think that India will enter and will eat Chinese car due to superior quality is quite debatable also Chinese have done quite impressive development in car tech.. They should enter the Russian market after the war is over and everything is chill.. This will help Indian brands to compete with Chinese brand and increase R&D.. As per ranking Chinese companies spend huge amount on R&D and do come in top 10 spending companies in R&D.. Let's see how will it end up.😊

      Indian car makers need to step up if they want to compete against established Chinese Automakers. Looking at the products coming out, China, Indian automakers are maybe at least 10-15 years behind. Thus, Indian domestic market automakers are not experienced with foreign competition, since they never had established products to create competition, for example Tata only sold their Telcoline series in Europe for a few years ubtil they pulled out, whereas mahindra up until recently was still selling the mahindra scorpio getaway for 20 years.

      @@kevi152 Chinese were never serious about Africa if they were they would have set up domestic manufacturing. Also there was less competition in the bike, either there were cheap bikes which were unreliable or expensive bikes which were reliable so it was quite easy for Indian brands to give both as it has lots of experience gained from the domestic market. Whereas it's not the case in cars China entered the European market even though they had inferior quality but with time they improved it. Moreover, European people are rich so they will pay more if the cars are well engineered. So China has done work for competing with European brands.. Even Japanese and Korean brands were considered cheap and inferior during the 80s and 80s, now look where they are now. The thing is Indian brands don't take risks at all and always try to play safe which is good but also hinders its expansion. Thb we are late but we are never too late...

I know it reduces R&D for the LHD model but the thing is most RHD countries are quite rich and prefer expensive cars.. Indian manufacturers should try South America and Africa first and then expand to Australia Europe etc...

    It's not only because of geopolitical reasons but many OEMs, suppliers, components that TATA and Mahindra cars use come from the west. For e.g the infotainment system they use are Harman and Visteon that are american companies. Same with automatic transmission etc.

    The key strategy they can use is a middle man version of a company that will sell Indian cars under its own brand. Basically a rebrand of Indian cars.
    Indian companies can establish a company and register it in smaller countries like Nepal, Bangladesh or even Bhutan and sell the cars to that brand which would export it to Russia. It will be little expensive but capturing a market worth billions will take some effort

    India should first consider how to conquer the Indian market before considering conquering Russia. Even so, Russia's per capita GDP is much higher than India's. Indian cars can't meet Russia's requirements in terms of quality, function, and cost. The reason why Chinese cars can successfully export is that the Chinese car market is the most fiercely competitive and technologically developed market in the world. Unfortunately, Indians can't see what has happened in China

    Mahindra tractors are famous in USA for low cost and efficient farm vehicles compared to high cost and automated John Deer. Though Mahindra cannot be effective in car/SUV market in US but the brand is now known to US people and they will not jeopardize that

    As Tata and Mahindra are becoming global brands, I wanted these 2 players to slowly capture russian car market as russia is a large car market. In long term it will benefit them. They can purchase russian brands and operate under their name. I think chinese are good in capturing opportunities or creating new opportunities, and Indians have conservative mindset, and they don't take more risks and we need to come out of this kind of mindset.

    Except of Chinese and Western cars brands that come to Russia through parallel imports, there are many powerful domestic car manufacturers in Russia (Lada, UAZ, KamAZ, Ural, PAZ, GAZ, NefAZ, Aurus, Volgabus and many others). Im Russian and, sorry, i never seen an indian car here

      This man said that I have never seen the Chinese Automobile Companies in top position in any country....but it's does not include Electric Vehicles. When it comes to Electric vehicles China is a single king. World will see in near by future so that time is coming soon day by day....😂but where is India how many countries India's Automobile Companies are in top positions?     Thanks for picking up this important topic. Can you please give a comparison of the offerings of Chinese companies vs what Tata and Mahindra are offering. In low cost two wheelers India is a super power. In four wheelers I suspect Chinese companies might be far ahead in technology and quality.

      In two wheeler but China don't have normal vehicles in China all two wheelers are Electric Vehicles so their is no comparison because India's two wheeler are normal and China's two wheeler are Electric powered.

    Ind has only 5-10 car manufacturers not 100. Only tata, m&m or Force can build products of that category. But they are technologically & market wise dependent on West. Gadkari ji should deeply think about it, rus car market is not small.

    One of the reason Russia wants to sell oil to India on Chinese currency yuan payment, is because India is not selling as much as it is buying from Russia thus resulting in skewed balance of payment position if India wants rupee to be most prefered currency for trading India should export more to Russia and what better way than cars and automobiles.

    Mahindra should make subsidiary car brand or takeover a Russian car brand to enter in Russia or Mahindra can directly enter in Russia with their own products. Because Tata has a huge risk for owning JLR but Mahindra don't have any other subsidiary car brand. With taking risk if Mahindra & Tata enter together in Russia, they would able to sweep out Chinese car brands from Russia & they can make their own monopoly in Russia. Just like Bajaj & TVS did in Africa & South America. Nowadays, our indigenous brands makes their products in premium level with less price. So, customers will happy if Indian brands specially Mahindra launch their cars in Russia. I know a Russian guy and he told me one day that Russians have been waiting for Mahindra for a long time.

    Indians car manufacturers should not enter into Russian car market due to the high capex required to setup manufacturing and then the "high volatile" situation of Russia. But yes exporting vechicles can be a option through hook or crook ways

    Lost opportunity for Indian car makers......no risk no gain. China aise hi biggest 2nd no. economy nahi bana. Wo 20-30 yrs aage ka sochte hain.     Chinese car co.s like Chery, Haval, Geely, Saic etc have come a long way since their cheap and low quality cars. Their cars are actually very good and most models are actually on par or very close in terms of quality to their western counterparts. Articles from reuters are biased against China. Also if you're a Skoda fan, then indian cars will also look bad in front of you. Russians have learnt that chinese cars are good and they'll be amazed when they see the nevs from byd and nio.
