Once you put you first tape line on the wall along the ceiling paint from the tape to the ceiling with your wall color. Then you can put your tarp up with tape but keep that tarp tape line in the center of the first tape you installed. You won’t have to worry about the black or whatever color your using bleed through.
Looks amazing. I'm getting ready to use the Dryfall in my newly built detached garage with high ceilings. Instead of hanging drywall, i like the industrial look of this. 2 questions: 1) Lowes has an acrylic Dryfall that is $40 cheaper than the Lowes waterbase Dryfall. What is the reason for one over the other? 2) Who rents a sprayer? I don't want to invest in a sprayer that i will never use again.
I am not sure about the price difference. I imagine any flat black dryfall would work well. I bought mine refurbished from a company online and resold it on Facebook Marketplace after the project.
Thanks for sharing this. It looks amazing. Taping the top of the ceiling is a really smart idea to save money and time. I was thinking I would need to do some kind of crown molding to hide the imperfections, but this method is so simple and clever.
I'm in the process of painting my open basement ceiling using a mini-roller. Yes, I'm retired and have the time but you'd be surprised at how much you can cover in a couple of hours. It isn't necessary to doing any masking, etc. I'm using dark grey (Graphite) and think it'll come out okay. Just offering another option for consideration. Thanks for the opportunity.

Jeff, thank you so much. I really appreciate that. Good luck on your project. In case you didn't notice, I mentioned in the comments that I did not prime the ductwork. Some believe this is a good step. Something to consider. For me, it's been fine so far. Thanks again!

ALEX!!! So this is hilarious, I’m considering doing exactly what you did - dryfall, exposed ceiling black, etc… so I go to find diy videos and I was like hmm this guy looks familiar! Hope you’re still playing guitar! :)
First, this looks amazing. I just removed my drop ceiling and am prepping the lines, etc. for paint. I have some pink insulation at the top of the wall. What should I do about that? Do I remove it completely? Remove it and put it back? If I put it back then I will have the contrast of bright pink insulation against black paint.
I had the same thing. I painted over it with two coats and it looks great. The only problem is that when you mess with it later to run wires through the wall or whatever, it looks bad. I need to touch up a few spots myself.
Looks stunning great job .. planning to do mine same way .. question .. do you also paint all electrical wires ? I have som many color coded ones like orange yellow white .. can I paint them as well?
Thank you! I didn't have anything color coded like that. I made sure to understand what I was painting over and it my case it was fine to paint. I removed a lot out outdated wiring when I did my project. (coaxial cable, etc.)
Thank you for this. It looks great. I'm about to remove old ceiling tile in my basement. I'm looking for ideas. I don't know if I can get into all that spraying.. But I love what you did!!

Did you need to prep ductwork to accept paint? Did you set up a fan to blow out fumes etc to outside? Did you need to use a vacuum or blower on ceiling to get rid of dust / construction dust debris before spraying? Thanks
I didn't do any special priming or anything. I did my best to blow the dust off and used an air mover to get it out of the basement. I think I used it when I was painting as well for ventilation, but I don't remember. Obviously, only so much you can do about all the dust up there. The paint accepted perfectly. A few years later there is no cracking or anything.
We just moved in a home with a full unfinished basement. I'd like to paint it but do paint everything on the ceiling to include pipes, vents, and a ton of cables?
Thanks a bunch! It took two coats to look right. The only annoying thing is that if you move the insulation later (which I've had to do to adjust wires, put mouse bait, etc.) you will expose unpainted insulation and will want to touch it up (which would be a hassle).
would you recommend spraying the ceiling in the rooms that will remain unfinished? I can't find any information or videos showing whether the entire basement should be sprayed or if I only need to do the finished rooms
I'm going to be painting my sunroom ceiling black. From previous painting experiences, the green tape gives a cleaner line. Also, remove tape ASAP. Not the next day.😊
No I did not. It was a bit of a risk but it paid off. The paint adhered to everything. It's been a year or two of season changes and there is no problem. No cracking or anything. The only annoying thing is the fact that the insulation looks bad where I had to fiddle with it after painting to run new wires and such. I'll have to touch it up.
it looks really good! did you consider priming any of the duct work before paint? i’ve heard paint chips easy on ducting so i’m curious there because i plan on doing this to my ceiling
Great video, thank you for sharing! Would you recommend spraying the drywall or rolling it? I’m at that step now and I’m dreading rolling all our walls- but I’ve never sprayed drywall before.
I rolled my drywall. It wasn't bad because I did it first. Didn't have to worry about getting paint on the ceiling or floor (I also did new carpet and trim). I think you could easily spray it though.
Great video! I will be painting my ceiling soon and was planning on painting before the framing and drywall. Thoughts on this? Also, did you have nails from the first floor coming thru and if so, did you cut them off first? Thanks.
Thanks! I'm guessing that would be a great way to do things, as long as the drywall is installed nicely. Mine was never intended to be exposed at the top so I had to do some patching, etc. Then I used the "black line" trick to hide the imperfections. I painted right over any nails.
Were there any parts of the ceiling you dont recommend painting over? Obviously duct intake/outtakes and light bulb sockets, but anything else I should be aware to not paint??
I painted almost everything, but like you mentioned there were a few things like that to block off. All the wiring, ductwork, and everything like that got painted.

That looks very nice. Is it okay to paint HVAC ducting made of stainless steel or aluminum? Is there anything that you encountered that CAN NOT be painted? Thank you.
Sorry, I accidentally deleted this and wanted to put it back for others - Thanks Max! Some choose to prime the ductwork in order to protect it from cracking. I did not, and it's been fine so far. However, I may need to report back after more time passes. I didn't paint an electrical outlet box. I think that was the only thing I had to avoid.

Is the paint holding up well on all objects equally? Did you paint over anything that would get hot like exhaust ducts or hot water pipes? If so are they also holding up?
Good question - It's been over a year and it still looks the same, even though we have been through a few HVAC seasonal cycles. I did have to move some insulation around to put some mouse traps in the ceiling. The areas where I moved the insulation obviously don't look great and I will need to touch them up.
Did you prep the ceiling to dust off? Didn’t know if I could or should use an air compressor (or something) so spray dust away, maybe wipe everything down
Almost. I used some plastic child safety covers when I was painting the ceiling electrical outlet so that I didn't spray into the outlet and still got a nice clean spray.
I painted over it. This is the most annoying part - I had to move the insulation over the last year to place some mouse bait and to run some things through the wall. It doesn't look good where I messed with it and I am going to have to touch it up.
How much water did you add to the paint or would it be a recommendation based on the sprayer? My sprayer is not as fancy as the one you used, it is just a Wagoner Power Sprayer. I didn't see any recommendations in the manual or on the product.
How old is the house? The paint looks like it went on very smooth. I just painted my basement ceiling with the non-dryfall Behr flat black, and with my house being built in '70, you can see a lot of the jagged edges and knots etc
I have exposed pink insulation installed on my ceiling. Should I remove it and go forward with this project? I hate the insulation but I’m not sure if I really need it
Painting over the insulation works (2 coats were needed), but it doesn't look great if you have to go mess around with the insulation later to run new wires or do anything like that. If you don't plan to be touching it much, it's fine to paint in my experience.
@@KodiakWoodcraft i watched other youtubers and i feel they did not look as good as yours so I figured maybe because you did two coats. Thanks for confirming. Great job!

Since I took down the old drop ceiling, there was probably a minor increase in noise. Its not an issue for me though given the way the house is used.

Sorry if I missed. One coat?
I did two coats. Thanks for watching.
How do you get around lighting? If you plan to install lighting should you paint before or after?
I took down my lights and put up new ones after I painted. I made a video to discuss the lighting: th-cam.com/video/YYH1lohPn1s/w-d-xo.html
Hi what did you do about the insulation between the joists did you just paint over it ?
I painted right over the exposed insulation. On first pass, it didn't look great. By the second, it looked good.
@@KodiakWoodcraft awesome thanks!
Good luck with your project!
Thank you for sharing! Did you do one coat or two coats?
Thanks for watching! I did two.
@@KodiakWoodcraft i watched other youtubers and i feel they did not look as good as yours so I figured maybe because you did two coats. Thanks for confirming. Great job!
Thank you so much!
@@KodiakWoodcraft one more question, what color did you paint the wall?
How many sq ft was your basement? You used 10 gallons of paint?
Probably 700-800 square feet.
How many coats did you spray on the wood?
I did 2 coats. Thanks for watching.
Looks great honestly, I guess any new pipes, ducts, or wires you add will need to be painted black
Yes, that's one of the downsides of doing this. I had to get behind some insulation recently, and I will need to touch it up.
