More recently, the Pope spoke directly to the mafiosi in 2014 about asking them to "stop doing evil" after the targeting and murder of a 3-year-old boy.
Video games are an under appreciated art that is becoming more and more recognised as a medium to tell a powerful story. He said he likes westerns, and as westerns go RDR2 has a great story.
RDR2 isn’t just a great western, it’s one of the greatest stories told in a game period. Along with arguably the best protagonist a game has ever seen in Arthur Morgan
I hate to bring this conversation to this particular game, because it was so well made and everything, but I think because players are actively involved that games can get away with fairly rudimentary stories and be considered narrative masterpieces without much effort. This _can_ happen with movies and I imagine literature too, after all, it has always mattered at least a little bit more how a story is told than what it contains. The story seems pretty safe to me as far as Rockstar games goes. The characters play their expected roles and don't really deviate from them. It feels like they reinforce the same points over an over, just in this one game, but up to and including rehashing the ending from the first Red Dead Redemption. I mentioned in the comments of a completely different video that the basic plot seems like it got a trial run in GTAIV's "Lost and Damned" DLC. Even though that almost seems _less_ safe to me because it has such a downer ending but they don't kill the protagonist at the end. I don't know. It's obvious I'm in the minority by being disappointed, and normally I wouldn't care but I think my biggest pet peeve is Rockstar never lets a story unfold. I don't know how many hours it takes to finish RDR2, but It would've been more interesting to me to see Dutch perhaps go from charasmatic, ideological revolutionary to a volatile gangster in love with the smell of his own farts. As it stands getting a whiff of his own farts is pretty much what we can assume he's always been about despite some disputed words to the contrary. If anyone thinks "well it's clever they let players decide for themselves" imagine how much more clever it would be if you showed us the gang at the height of their loyalty to Dutch, and we were _still_ in a position to decide for ourselves. Look at this way, in the first game Dutch suggests that Abbigail was a prostitute who slept with every member of the gang, even if the prequel retains the basic backstory of Abbigail's prostitution (I don't remember anything about it) they don't _really_ paint a picture of a gang were that scenario seems even remotely plausible. That's the kind of thing I mean when I say "safe"
Also the graphics does it justice for old timers like him. No way he could look at say play station 1 graphics and enjoy it the same from spectating. Playing it of course is different.
The Pinkerton Detective Agency was a private investigator firm which back then was hired by the U.S. government as well as various private clients - such as Mr. Cornwall in the game - to deal with interstate crime cases that could be anything from a missing person case to taking down outlaws like the game's Van der Linde Gang. They were very expensive but had the largest force of field agents in the States; in a sense they were forerunner for the FBI. Also, something I noticed as a regularity in the commentary: cowboys are NOT to be mixed with outlaws and gunmen. Being a cowboy was a legitimate business of herding cattle from A to B across long distances and living on the rough along the animals, as opposed to ranchers who were working at a more or less fixed location. It was the bandits and outlaw gangs that made a living by robbing trains, banks, stagecoaches, etc. Fun fact: There was also a tradition of "cowboying" in Europe as well up to the mid/late 1700s in Central Europe and the Balkans, with medieval Hungary being the biggest contributor to it. Since Hungarians had a nomadic ancestry before settling in Europe, trekking long distances with animals wasn't at all a strange concept and they herded quality cattle for meat and hide as far as the markets of London. In Hungarian we called these people a "hajdú" (hajdúk in plural) which is a derivative of the word "hajtó" which means - among other things - a herder or cattler.
Yes, but cowboys did also venture into outlaw or bandit territory as well. Some cattle barons made their cowboys commit crimes such as murder, intimidation, and robbery. There's some interesting stories out there about it on TH-cam.

I think it's cool to have an actual ex-capo of a real mob to validate everything in a mafia game. It's like sitting in a classroom and a special speaker comes in and you're just locked into his speech. I love the authenticity.
Let's just say killing Micah aka giving that sniveling, cowardly rat what he deserved as John in the post-game epilogue was so satisfying and it helped that I hated Micah's guts due to how he acted in the main story.

@@futurestoryteller I've only played the remake/remaster for Mafia 1 and 2, normal release for Mafia 3. I didn't find them to be models of realism. I maintain what I said about M3 . . . it was the lackluster open world sandbox implementation, not Lincoln Clay that dragged it down. M3's main story, supporting cast, and multiple endings are all great. The after credit scene with John Donovan is legendary.
Whether it is accurate or not. The acting and characters and setting is just top notch. Its really a good modern tribute to old western movies. If it somehow came out in the 60's it would be a hit for several reasons. Not just because of the alien high tech technology its run on.

Really enjoyed what he had to say at the end about it's better to be loved than feared. There is definitely a lot of wisdom in that and it's VERY in line with Arthur's whole character arc in the game.
I'd like him to react to more RD2 content but at least give him some context of cutscene instead of a blind reaction cause he might have a different opinions/reaction if he know what's actually happening

It's not even a spoiler problem because, Michael isn't gonna be playing RDR2. Let's be honest. lol. So I don't think spoiling him on the plot is going to really matter.
In the first train robbery it was actually scouted and planned by the rival gang the O'Driscolls. The Van Der Linde gang gets wind of it when they raid an O'Driscoll camp and decided to do the job themselves. Also I remember a video you made about the Cosa Nostra originating in New Orleans. San Denis is the equivalent of New Orleans in RDR2.
There actually were many rules of war in these times. One of the most commonly known was that bayonets cannot be triangle shaped because it made nearly unsalvageable wounds. Reason these laws and practices existed was because many of the lawmakers and politicians of the time partook in the war and saw or even were subjugated to the effects of it so they had first hand experience on "what was just too far".
Nope. Triangular bayonets were never banned, didn't cause more grievous wounds, and were actually designed like that to make them more durable. Give a grunt an expensive, fragile peice of kit and he'll show you how to use it to pound a nail in.
I love how he talks about the events happening not as someone who will claim he knows the lifestyle of the wild west but as someone who wonders and thinks about if it was like that and maybe add some of his experience to it. Really fun listening and thinking about it as well. He has a point about security, it isn't like today where there are cameras or other security measures. I do wonder if they had the five families then how would it had been like.
I would've loved more emphasis on Bronte's crime syndicate in Saint Denis (RDR's New Orleans) and Michael's reaction to it and the idea of the criminals of the old meeting the new, civilized form of organized crime that he brought up. Still, it's always entertaining to hear his insight into crime stories.

2:15 this scene is actually a blatant recreation of a scene from a movie called Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The original quote was, "I work for Mr E.H. Harriman of the Union Pacific Railroad, and he entrusted me." They then blow the cart open. Rockstar used so msny influences its awesome. They recreated the train robbery scene from jesse james as well later on.
I disagree. The characters are great, but the storyline basically amounts to: "We need more money Arthur!" "Let's go get some money!" (Something goes wrong) (Big shootout). Rinse and repeat for 50 hours. Also it's silly that they're in constant need of money when the player can be carrying thousands of dollars; which would probably be worth hundreds of thousands these days.
@@inputfunny Still, it's a good history, a little repetive sometimes, but most of the scenes and camera plans are very cool, besides, sometimes what makes a good game isn't the original history line, You could watch for example "Little Nightmares" and "Little Nightmares 2" both of them have kind of the same history "we are in an unknown world and the only thing we can do is survive" now, the cool thing about little nightmares it's how is shown in the story, while you are escaping to survive, lots of things are going on in the background, and if you play both games maybe the first time you won't get it, but after playing it some times you will understand some of the symbolisms and parts of the history of why the world is like this.
@@inputfunny That perfectly describes RDR2's story. It's a masterpiece of a character exploration and writing but as a plot with missions, it's a great but flawed story. Chapters 4 with Bronte is rushed, Guarma is a weird, abrupt detour from the main game and Chapter 6 quickly tries to wrap stories brought up earlier like the Wapiti tribe in the middle of the gang's downfall. Again, it's a good story, but I don't think it'd be as excellent if not the excellent character development and performances.

I can confirm through a friend of mine that it is possible to pay your way out of the mob. He got caught up in a gun fight while picking up drugs from the triads. Decided that's not how he wanted to go. Paid 10k to get out quietly. That was nearly a decade ago. No trouble since then.
"You wouldn't rob a train without knowing what's on it." Little did the ex-mob boss know, that's a very subtle but long-impacting detail. It shows Dutch's desperation at this point, and it was a major factor in his hatred of Leviticus Cornwall.
When you go into depth on what is better, to be loved or feared, I've always been told that it's better to be feared, however i've always been a firm believer that loyalty is the most important thing to have (to be loved). I would get ridiculed by my answer everytime by people around me, but in turn would see the same people have their lives flipped on their heads when someone close to them either stabbed them in the back or betrayed them because of monetary gain, attention, lust or fear as you put it. I might've lost a ton of people in my life due to being too naive, hoping people have a good heart by default, but in turn I've slowly regained a circle of people that not only are understanding and loyal, but also ready to have my back... which is shocking, but so refreshing to experience. I'm not of course fully there yet, but it's slowly becoming a reality.
for the train robbery, they got info on what was in the train from a rival gang that was about to rob the same train (thats also where they got the dynamite)
I love that despite not being some big expert on the old west, historically speaking, he still applied his knowledge of his experiences with the mafia to how gangs used to function back then. The fact that everything he said was spot on blows my mind. It just shows how much old practices carry into the new. Even in a different time period, things could be the same. You could put the Van Der Linde gunslingers next to a bunch of Capone's lieutenants and they'd probably be similar in everything except for appearance.

In fact in 1891, so roughly 8 years before the game is set, Police Chief David Hennessy was shot and killed either by members of the Mantranga or Provenzano family which led to the New Orleans Lynching, the largest lynching in American history in which 11 Italian-Americans were killed

The guys Cornwall was talking to are actually the Pinkertons who were actually (and surprisingly still exist) a private agency of sorts and also were responsible for union busting and also hunting down Outlaws, they also assisted in protecting Lincoln during the days before the American civil war broke out.
Totally agree that there aren’t enough Westerns anymore these days I love “3:10 To Yuma” not because it’s a fantastic movie (it’s good, not great IMO) but just because it’s a Western made somewhat recently and that makes it a rarity 😅 This game SHOWED how much good, well-crafted Westerns still speak to people… Hollywood should take note

I must remind everyone, during the events of RDR2 (Red Dead Redemption 2), the year was set in 1899, while the wild west ended in 1865. During the early 1900, we are beginning to see the construction of cities, federal law, and travel on a national scale. RDR2 represents the end of the gunslingers and outlaws, where the last few criminals and vigilantes are hunted down and either arrested or hung.

Video games are an under appreciated art that is becoming more and more recognised as a medium to tell a powerful story. He said he likes westerns, and as westerns go RDR2 has a great story.
RDR2 isn’t just a great western, it’s one of the greatest stories told in a game period. Along with arguably the best protagonist a game has ever seen in Arthur Morgan
I hate to bring this conversation to this particular game, because it was so well made and everything, but I think because players are actively involved that games can get away with fairly rudimentary stories and be considered narrative masterpieces without much effort. This _can_ happen with movies and I imagine literature too, after all, it has always mattered at least a little bit more how a story is told than what it contains.
The story seems pretty safe to me as far as Rockstar games goes. The characters play their expected roles and don't really deviate from them. It feels like they reinforce the same points over an over, just in this one game, but up to and including rehashing the ending from the first Red Dead Redemption.
I mentioned in the comments of a completely different video that the basic plot seems like it got a trial run in GTAIV's "Lost and Damned" DLC. Even though that almost seems _less_ safe to me because it has such a downer ending but they don't kill the protagonist at the end.
I don't know. It's obvious I'm in the minority by being disappointed, and normally I wouldn't care but I think my biggest pet peeve is Rockstar never lets a story unfold. I don't know how many hours it takes to finish RDR2, but It would've been more interesting to me to see Dutch perhaps go from charasmatic, ideological revolutionary to a volatile gangster in love with the smell of his own farts. As it stands getting a whiff of his own farts is pretty much what we can assume he's always been about despite some disputed words to the contrary. If anyone thinks "well it's clever they let players decide for themselves" imagine how much more clever it would be if you showed us the gang at the height of their loyalty to Dutch, and we were _still_ in a position to decide for ourselves.
Look at this way, in the first game Dutch suggests that Abbigail was a prostitute who slept with every member of the gang, even if the prequel retains the basic backstory of Abbigail's prostitution (I don't remember anything about it) they don't _really_ paint a picture of a gang were that scenario seems even remotely plausible. That's the kind of thing I mean when I say "safe"
Also the graphics does it justice for old timers like him. No way he could look at say play station 1 graphics and enjoy it the same from spectating. Playing it of course is different.

The Pinkerton Detective Agency was a private investigator firm which back then was hired by the U.S. government as well as various private clients - such as Mr. Cornwall in the game - to deal with interstate crime cases that could be anything from a missing person case to taking down outlaws like the game's Van der Linde Gang. They were very expensive but had the largest force of field agents in the States; in a sense they were forerunner for the FBI. Also, something I noticed as a regularity in the commentary: cowboys are NOT to be mixed with outlaws and gunmen. Being a cowboy was a legitimate business of herding cattle from A to B across long distances and living on the rough along the animals, as opposed to ranchers who were working at a more or less fixed location. It was the bandits and outlaw gangs that made a living by robbing trains, banks, stagecoaches, etc.
Fun fact: There was also a tradition of "cowboying" in Europe as well up to the mid/late 1700s in Central Europe and the Balkans, with medieval Hungary being the biggest contributor to it. Since Hungarians had a nomadic ancestry before settling in Europe, trekking long distances with animals wasn't at all a strange concept and they herded quality cattle for meat and hide as far as the markets of London. In Hungarian we called these people a "hajdú" (hajdúk in plural) which is a derivative of the word "hajtó" which means - among other things - a herder or cattler.
And then apparently the plural “hajdúk” became a singular in Romanian as “haiduc,” and in South Slavic languages too, IIRC
I didn't know that about hajdu! My great grandparents came to Canada from Hungary as refugees in 1914. I raise cattle now in western Canada (BC).

@@futurestoryteller I've only played the remake/remaster for Mafia 1 and 2, normal release for Mafia 3. I didn't find them to be models of realism. I maintain what I said about M3 . . . it was the lackluster open world sandbox implementation, not Lincoln Clay that dragged it down. M3's main story, supporting cast, and multiple endings are all great. The after credit scene with John Donovan is legendary.
Whether it is accurate or not. The acting and characters and setting is just top notch. Its really a good modern tribute to old western movies. If it somehow came out in the 60's it would be a hit for several reasons. Not just because of the alien high tech technology its run on.

In the first train robbery it was actually scouted and planned by the rival gang the O'Driscolls. The Van Der Linde gang gets wind of it when they raid an O'Driscoll camp and decided to do the job themselves.
Also I remember a video you made about the Cosa Nostra originating in New Orleans. San Denis is the equivalent of New Orleans in RDR2.
There actually were many rules of war in these times. One of the most commonly known was that bayonets cannot be triangle shaped because it made nearly unsalvageable wounds. Reason these laws and practices existed was because many of the lawmakers and politicians of the time partook in the war and saw or even were subjugated to the effects of it so they had first hand experience on "what was just too far".

I disagree. The characters are great, but the storyline basically amounts to: "We need more money Arthur!" "Let's go get some money!" (Something goes wrong) (Big shootout). Rinse and repeat for 50 hours. Also it's silly that they're in constant need of money when the player can be carrying thousands of dollars; which would probably be worth hundreds of thousands these days.
@@inputfunny Still, it's a good history, a little repetive sometimes, but most of the scenes and camera plans are very cool, besides, sometimes what makes a good game isn't the original history line, You could watch for example "Little Nightmares" and "Little Nightmares 2" both of them have kind of the same history "we are in an unknown world and the only thing we can do is survive" now, the cool thing about little nightmares it's how is shown in the story, while you are escaping to survive, lots of things are going on in the background, and if you play both games maybe the first time you won't get it, but after playing it some times you will understand some of the symbolisms and parts of the history of why the world is like this.

Chapters 4 with Bronte is rushed, Guarma is a weird, abrupt detour from the main game and Chapter 6 quickly tries to wrap stories brought up earlier like the Wapiti tribe in the middle of the gang's downfall. Again, it's a good story, but I don't think it'd be as excellent if not the excellent character development and performances.

I can confirm through a friend of mine that it is possible to pay your way out of the mob. He got caught up in a gun fight while picking up drugs from the triads. Decided that's not how he wanted to go. Paid 10k to get out quietly. That was nearly a decade ago. No trouble since then.

When you go into depth on what is better, to be loved or feared, I've always been told that it's better to be feared, however i've always been a firm believer that loyalty is the most important thing to have (to be loved). I would get ridiculed by my answer everytime by people around me, but in turn would see the same people have their lives flipped on their heads when someone close to them either stabbed them in the back or betrayed them because of monetary gain, attention, lust or fear as you put it. I might've lost a ton of people in my life due to being too naive, hoping people have a good heart by default, but in turn I've slowly regained a circle of people that not only are understanding and loyal, but also ready to have my back... which is shocking, but so refreshing to experience. I'm not of course fully there yet, but it's slowly becoming a reality.

I love that despite not being some big expert on the old west, historically speaking, he still applied his knowledge of his experiences with the mafia to how gangs used to function back then. The fact that everything he said was spot on blows my mind. It just shows how much old practices carry into the new. Even in a different time period, things could be the same. You could put the Van Der Linde gunslingers next to a bunch of Capone's lieutenants and they'd probably be similar in everything except for appearance.

The guys Cornwall was talking to are actually the Pinkertons who were actually (and surprisingly still exist) a private agency of sorts and also were responsible for union busting and also hunting down Outlaws, they also assisted in protecting Lincoln during the days before the American civil war broke out.

So weird that they didn't show him the Angelo Bronte parts. What a missed opportunity. I would've like to see his take on an authentic Mobster that came from Italy and how he seen through Dutch. And Bronte was a major factor in chapter 4 so it's really weird they didn't include him. Once again a major missed opportunity
I must remind everyone, during the events of RDR2 (Red Dead Redemption 2), the year was set in 1899, while the wild west ended in 1865. During the early 1900, we are beginning to see the construction of cities, federal law, and travel on a national scale. RDR2 represents the end of the gunslingers and outlaws, where the last few criminals and vigilantes are hunted down and either arrested or hung.
1) We know what "RDR2" is. No need to add "Red Dead Redemption 2" in parentheses.
2) You don't need to explain the plot of RDR2. We fucking know. In fact, what you just said is explained with text in the opening of the game.
I like how Dutch left the decision on the guys from the train up to Arthur. Plausible deniability. "Hey, they were alive when I left."

Also Michael Franzese: I should make a video where I critique this game without doing any research on it and make false assumptions about the storyline that would easily be corrected if I had just spent a little time actually looking into the game before making a video about it...
