I was born and raised in Anaheim California in the late '60's and '70's, the pollution was so bad, I saw the San Bernardino mountains only 1 time, in nearly 10 years, on a clear, windy Easter morning. Today, you can see the San Bernardino's pretty much every day and the air is very noticeably cleaner. People diss on California for lots of things but, they're doing a great job on adopting EV's, solar and wind energy, and housing the homeless and cleaning up the state, which are all very difficult tasks.

I think the Berkeley University might be a little bit generous on overly crediting EV's for the decline in California's air pollution. It has been on the decline for decades, well before the first EV hit the road. There are numerous reason for this. Another academic con job. At least Sam's convinced, though.

California has also been ramping up the renewables for their power generation, and has always been the leader in the US. On average California uses around 85% clean energy during the day and over 50% during the night. They have solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, nuclear, and battery storage. In fact, they'll have a total of 7gw of battery storage by this summer, and have a goal of 50gw by 2045. And a transmission line is also currently being built to bring another 4gw from already built windfarms from Wyoming.
They no longer use any coal power, and gas sometimes only totals a little over only 1gw on good days when they average close to 95% of clean energy generation.

    • @nornal

Several summers ago California advised it citizens to charge their EVa at only certain hours of the day as there was not enough electricity to go around. We had rolling blackouts back then. Imagine if the number of EVs increased dramatically. Everybody will suffer even those who don't own evs.

    • @Paul-cj1wb
      @Paul-cj1wb 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@nornal You see my "batteries" mentioned in my comment above. That's what that was about. They have installed most of that capacity since 2020. But especially in just the last 2 years. They can be called up in mere seconds when needed and takes extra power needed. No more rolling blackouts in California.
The best evidence of that can be seen on April 8th of this year during the eclipse with around 11:20am local time being the very worst. Anyone reading this can go to the CAISO site, select "Supply Trend" and then go back to 4/8/2024 on the left side of the graph and see for themselves.
As the outer edges of the eclipse (not the total but the outside shadows) reached their solar farms (beginning around 9am, but more significantly during the period between 10:25am to around 12:pm when they dipped significantly), and the batteries (which were in the middle of charging) took over in an instant. For comparison, from a cold start, it takes gas 2 to 3 hours to respond.
Batteries have worked so well that even oil rich Texas is turning to them now to avoid what happened in 2021.

Sam has made a point that can't be argued against EVs . EV adoption reduces air pollution locally . It's very simple . If you had a complete EV adoption in your area ( the more urban the more benefit ) you would not be breathing in vehicle emissions which are released at ground level . As Sam stated if your eating at a outdoor cafe along a busy road you are breathing in car fumes . People commit suicide with carbon monoxide . Basically the more you breath those fumes the more you contaminate your body .
I ran into a guy who has 2 little kids and owns a diesel pickup . Standing by the truck with it running you get a strong order of the exhaust vapors . Those little lungs are taking in those vapors on a regular basis and the parent is ignorant to what he is doing .

The study you allude to, but do not link, collected data form a small area in San Francisco with high EV adoption. The CO2 emissions decrease in that small area is not at all indicative of CO2 emissions for California as a whole.. Further, correlation is, of course, not causation as admitted by researchers: "Looking at California data for electric vehicle adoption - which is very high in the Bay Area - Cohen and graduate student Naomi Asimow concluded that the decrease was due to passenger vehicle electrification." That's an unscientific conclusion.

    • @jeffl4810
      @jeffl4810 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yes.
      - barely any pollutants from brakes, as regenerative braking makes brake parts last a very long time. Like over a full magnitude longer then ICE brakes.
      - no exhaust emissions. This is a massive reduction. Exhaust contains: C02, NOx, CO, VOC, and PM. Most of the pollutants have skmewhat been reduced over the last few decades, but they are all still there, along with trace combustion byproducts from impurities being burned.
      - Energy is recovered during braking, saving substantial energy, especially in hilly environments and in stop and go traffic.
      - tires do wear a little faster. But not dramatically more. 10-20% seems to be the consensus. Weight of an EV is getting on par with ICE however.
Performance vehicles always chew through tires, and like ICE, performance EV's do too.

We will start getting farther away around 2030. Then we will be getting close like we are now around 2050. Unfortunately we are told through government propaganda that emissions will be reduced with EVs and renewable tech such as solar panels and wind turbines. The manufacturing process for these technologies produces enormous amounts of CO2 well above that required for equivalent ICE cars and nuclear reactor technology. Because Net Zero technologies are short lived when compared to the older technologies they replace there will be a continuous and massive amount of mining and manufacturing required. CO2 will as a result spike dramatically and never come down due to their short life cycle and the need to continuously replace them. Because of the battery EVs are more or less similar to your mobile phone, when the battery is done and new tech has arrived they become useless. There is essentially no second hand market for an EV as buyers are not interested in taking on the battery risk. Calling Net Zero tech green is simply a lie the government wants you to believe.

      Stop spreading FUD.
      - Solar panels are energy neutral within a few years, and are productive for decades...
      - EV's save enormous CO2.
And will only get better with time. This is 3 fold:
      a) EV's use less electricity then it would take to make the fuel for ICE (accounting for extraction, transport, refinement, storage distributionand dispensing). Resulting in *a net savings of electricity by switching to EV's* and no FF required
      B) EV's can be powered by any source that makes electricity. And are much more efficient at consuming that energy. This also means they become even cleaner and cleaner as the grid cleans up. And grid scale pollution is much more controllable and lower emissions than a billion or two individual ICE.
      c) Batteries are indefinitely recyclable... The minerals only have to be mined *ONCE*. In the next 15-20 years enough lithium will be mined, that we won't have to mine more. Note the typical passenger EV only contains 10's of kg of lithium...
Can't say that about the *10"s of thousands of liters of gasoline* consumed by by the average car over its lifetime... None of it recoverable, extremely environmentally damaging in its extration, transport, refinement. And then untimely all the issues from its combustion...

Really, Sam? According to their own estimates, the number of air quality alert days has INCREASED, not gone down. As well, particulate pollution has gone up.
Seems like killing off acres of grass and trees for solar panels kind of erodes the area's ability to filter air and absorb CO2. Also, since solar and wind AREN'T generating hardly any power and coal and natural gas plants have to be used less efficiently to cover the difference, emissions have gone UP due to solar and wind and EVs.
The narrative doesn't play anymore. The real life facts refute it completely.

Modern combustion vehicles clean the air of more harmful pollutants they they emit. The grid is incredibly efficient. Even old skool steam thermal plants are between 40-and 55% efficient in turning fuel into electricity. With the latter being Ultra Super Critical steam plants. Gas turbines are 60+%. Hydro is even more efficient.
The transmission losses are in the order of 7-10% from plant to end user. Sometimes lower. Especially when distributed generation is used.
ICE efficiency peaks at 20-25% maybe a bit more with some designs. But it's not in its peak for long periods of operation. And ICE requires a LOT of energy to: extract, transport, refine, distribute, and dispense the fuel. So much so, that fuel processing uses more energy than if everyone used EV's instead.
The grid could use more distribution capacity, and it's becoming greener all the time. It's also far less polluting, even if all ICE was gone and the grid was powering EV's using FF.
The USA alone would save about 1100 TWh annually by not processing FF. More than enough to to power everything with EV's and still have about 500 TWh left over...
Capacity issues will be helped by grid scale batteries, HVDC transmission lines, and management of resources such as hydro.
