Top Gear showing its age. When they said they want fake engine noises, they lost all credibility. Are they children? Need vroom vroom noises - pathetic!!
❤
@ev.whyking u must have watched the wrong tg video.
@ev.whyking once again you established that you like most trolls are not grounded in facts
Their writers are not children. Even children know smart-EVs are coming. Their writers are old men. They are a meme for old generation thinking about cars.
@@hugh7840 A person's age has very little to do with a person's ability to embrace new and better ideas. I know lots of dumb ass kids.
Top gears comments about fake noises show how out of touch they are!!
So Sam lauds Matt from carwow, but now makes silly comments about all UK reviewers have mental issues or lack of testosterone? How fragile is this none EV owner 😂
And outfits like Dodge will likely provide them, to the extent there's demand. But who really cares, re the mainstream buying cars to commute or for family transportation? Like maybe 2 percent of drivers?
When I was a kid I loved those cans that would make a "moo" noise when you turned them upside down. But I outgrew that by age 10.
Jai Hind. We Indians will miss the rhythm of the Bulls trotting on the roads when we all drive the soundless Made in India EVs.

Top Gear is also having a Kodak or Nokia moment . I used to be a huge fan and then they just lost the plot.
Top Gear is an irrelevance in the UK. I am also finding more and more of my friends and relatives coming up with snarky remarks about electric vehicles . I think it's a generational thing.
, especially if you talk to the 18 to 20 year old and especially if you talk TESLA can't wait for the impact of the - $25K car will have on the UK 18 to 25 year old market . Dad will really get a surprise. !!!!
Jezza leaving or self destructing or whatever and was it whats his name Chris red head for 1 or 2 seasons and the GT on Amazon killed TG for me.... GT wasnt even that good till 2nd season probably!!??? I can t even remember because i think i stopped watching GT as well
I mean TG did sort of get good when Chris left and Harris and Joey!? was on??? dont know what the hell the rally cross test course was about!!!!
But i loved TG and GT for May!!! I grew to dislike the midget noel edmunds.... and even Jezza just got tired... but noel edmunds teaming up with Jezza in jokes felt really tired and i always liked May's bits.... and Mays other programs.... i hated the midget for some reason in everything he does! LOL dont ask me why
I did love either TG and or GT in China episodes! That Jezza statement of China's progress from when they had the Stigs Chinese cousin to when Jezza was driving across one of Chinas bridges was apt and on the money! China is eating the collective West for brekkie!
The West has just given up creating positively and doubled down on war and destruction.... it is amazing watching those Chinese episodes then to seeing Rich Ham driving the NIO EP9 and now seeing the Chinese infrastructure and EVs!!!
I would love to see TG trio race across China! CURRENTLY! HSR v EVs! v electric scooter i dont know!!! XD the HSR would win hands down LOL!!!!! May would absolutely love and die in the HSR!!!

UK journalism has gone completely off the rails, both newspapers and specialist motoring journalism. Everything is determined by the agenda and the need for clicks.
Welcome to the internet and almost everything, re websites and the quest for clicks.
@ev.whyking Sam does so little fact checking and just endlessly defends companies he holds shares in. Makes himself look ill informed on a daily basis. Plus so many of his ‘game changing’ click bait titles 😂
@ev.whyking actually Sam is correct, and you are wrong. They referred to the lack of a fake transmission and fake exhaust noises and the weight as 'limitations'.
so, what has changed? except of course there were no 'clicks' back a few decades ago.

@@FS-eh4dj I'm not sure you or the people you're referring to understand, A manual transmission is preferred in a ice car because you can gain more control over acceleration, which in an electric vehicle is 'irrelevant' as it has only one speed transmission and will always give you the best acceleration and control when you put your foot down.

You don't need fake transmission or fake engine sounds. Better to spend the money on something useful like power share.
Cant be top gear if theres no gears
maybe 'one gear' unless you have a 2 speed Tycan or something
When i was a kid we used to put playing cards into the spokes of our bicycles so that they would sound like motocycles. We were nine years old, thats the sort of things that nine year olds do. An adult who did the same thing would be a a very sad individual indeed.
Yes I had a bike with a plastic engine with a battery, that’s what tg want.
Spot on, I've had a Model 3 RWD for 3 months and the last thing I miss is the noise and lag of my old diesel....
That instant torque beats any stupid noise. Also, it's much stealthier when gunning it.
The hardest part about manufacturing the Model T was getting those faux horse poops to come out of the exhaust.
I suspect not having to FEED and clean up after the Model T, pay vet bills, etc. were a meaningful part of why such cars very rapidly replaced horses for the masses. (Obviously speed, reliability, etc. were significant aspects too).
😂
Great comment. 👍
I live in the UK and have owned an Audi RS GT. The fake noise in my opinion annoyed me as I could not turn it off.
I now own a Tesla model Y and the peace and quiet is fantastic!
As far as the British journalists comments, I honestly feel that they are mostly petrol heads and need to grow up and except that the future is electric.
Old people like quiet time…😂
I used to have a Rover 45 with a CVT auto box and it had a "fake 7 speed gear" selection. It was a novelty for about three minutes. Ok. the car itself was nothing to write home about but fake gears did not add to it's appeal.
If they want it to make a noise, then they can put lolly sticks on the wheels!
And a pee wee bell😂
😅
@ev.whyking what did they say about weight and gear?
That's like asking an electric oven to have fake fire. For what???
They want to give the BMW M3 a fake horse trotting noise. Monty Python stylee.
Completely agree. They need something to say so they make up criticisms. I find their videos hard to watch.
i want my car to fart like a horse, leave road apples, and refuse to move until i whip it.
They should also make a fragrance emitter to spray a little gasoline into the cabin too. Cmon Tesla.. give people what they want… besides a super car for family sedan pricing.
Car GUys (Not Tesla Fan Boys) want these things. Aren't all the EV lovers wanting us to get onboard? Well this is what we want so give it to us! LoL
Been a car enthusiast as long as I can remember...and a Tesla owner for over a decade. After 300k miles of driving an electric power train, I still miss shifting. There is something engaging about hearing and feeling the vibration tell you when to shift. That said, I don't miss the noise. When I'm traveling at high speeds on the track or elsewhere in my performance M3, I can hear-feel the tires reacting to the pavement (better workout a full helmet). I missed the noise from a gas powertrain for a couple years... now, when I drive a 5 or 6 speed, the roar of the engine gets in the way of my hearing how my tires/power train are reacting to the road. My Model S made me realize I'll never commute in a gas car again. My model 3 performance reminds me that I may never build a track car, and my Rivian r1t covers all my hauling and construction work needs.
Yawn. Verbose …
Shifting is the worst part.
If you must consume so much energy and resources I suppose we should appreciate that at least you’ve gone electric. But we’re going to be in trouble globally if everyone expects to do this.
Really disagree went on a driving holiday in Italy last year.
Nothing better shifting gears coming out of tight corner. Hearing the power change as you eat up the the road.
@@patrickkavanagh3504 but would a fake gear change with a fake noise really be the same? And how much money does it cost to run a 500hp Internal Combustion Engine car? the spark plugs alone will be $$$
We have the same level of Car journalism in Poland, paid by Oil in short, people cannot be so stupid.
Again, great video Sam. These same journalists would criticise Tesla if they put in fake exhaust sounds that didn’t hit the right note! It’s exhausting!!
Thanks for addressing the low volume issue Sam. You nailed it =)
As for your point about noise pollution, I totally agree, in a fossil fuel car as a driver, it's hard to have a conversation with a back seat passenger because of the road and noise engine, they have a hard time hearing you. These journalist mindset, are stuck in the last century.
Rolls Royce used to boast that the sound of their engine was so quiet that you could hear their clock ticking. Come on, Tesla, bring back fake clock noises.
🤣🤣🤣
One of the UK “journalists” that reviewed the Model 3P actually stuck his head by the right front tyre and said the cooling fan was noisy. With a straight face to boot.
Comments re horse noises made me laugh. Have ordered mine in red and so excited. Colour was my only tough decision. Some of these petrol head reviewers are clearly feeling threatened. The only (and I mean only) complaint I have with this vehicle is the speedometer and absence of a heads up display. Otherwise what an absolute bargain. Also just falls under luxury tax threshold so looking forward to the satisfying tax benefit through a novated lease confirmed by my accountant. Love the channel Sam and hope your foot is healing nicely.
If you're going to do fake noise, do it right. Start with Clip-Clop, then a trot, accelerate to a canter, then on to full Gallop. (bloody idiots)
Surprised they didn't complain about missing the smell of gasoline when tanking up
That smell isn't gasoline - it is an additive called benzine. and it is a carcinogen so try not to smell the stuff if you can.
Transmission = workaround for the limitations of the narrow torque band of an ICE. Also, Noise = wasted energy.
I drive a Tesla, and I don’t miss the engine noise, because I’m enjoying the swift acceleration. The stereo is incredible
Here in the UK Top Gear is no longer considered a serious motoring programme, it is almost a comedy program these days, despite the exit of some of their more infamous clowns.
Imagine complaining that our computer keyboards no longer make the same clicking sounds as a typewriter.... 'One major downside of this keyboard thingy is that when I press 'Return,' I don't hear the carriage return bell/clank!'
Don't like anything fake.
I quite like fake breasts ! 😂
Never watched Top Nobs after blocking them years ago. So thanks Sam for reminding me why
My favorite noise, is the traction of the tires gripping the road. By being able to hear that, you can drive closer to the limits of traction, than you could in a car that all tire noise is drowned out by the engine. It's an asset, for the car to make virtually no noise. Under heavy acceleration, you do hear motor cogging and gears meshing in the reduction gears and differentials. (A very SATISFYING sound!) By the way, Tesla's DO have fake "fart" noises! Just enter "toybox", then, select the "whoopie cushion" Icon.
For a track car, controlling torque is important. Sound is a heads up power gauge. In that sound is level of grip. Torque and what the pedal is capable of in the moment.
This seems valid. It wouldn’t be bad for Tesla to add some audible feedback with an OTA update. Something which can optionally enabled. But instead of artificial motor sounds, maybe Tesla engineers can think of audible feedback which is more useful and precise.
Exactly, Hyundai pulled it off with the Ioniq 5 N, Tesla could've done it too.
During the transition from horses to automobiles, it was a pretty common (and valid) complaint that the new automobile didn’t smell enough like horse farts.
I love the quiet of electric cars and especially the model 3. They silently blow away the competition. Now that's exciting!
The love-affair with cars is a hard habit to break. Needing ‘fake sound’ to enjoy driving a vehicle though reminds me of my granddaughter refusing to give up her soother. Personally, I absolutely enjoy the smooth quiet acceleration of an electric vehicle while also having a conversation or listening to music without having to compete with engine noise.
Petro heads love the sound of a combustion engine rowing through its gears, along with the smell of gasoline. I believe they use the term visceral for many high performance combustion engine cars as the vibration through the seat of their pants is a pleasant experience. As the migration toward EVs continues, these types of experiences will be restricted to places where noise is not of concern. Just like some folks like to ride horses, there will be closed tracks for folks who want to experience old fashion driving. I don’t know anyone today who doesn’t want modern safety and convenance features. Do you want EFI or a carborated engine - did you enjoy pressing the accelerator of a cold engine and having it hesitate or stall because the mixture was not optimal? Do you want ABS or a chance to practice your braking modulation skills in emergency stops. How about bias ply tires, or do you prefer modern steel belted radial tires? Want drum brakes, so you have to manage brake fade to ensure you have enough braking action when you need it later? I have no desire to go back to the “bad old days.”
People always complain about the lack of information about the tires through the steering wheel on modern cars, well , buy an EV, dich the noise and listen to the rubber scream.
To be fair, he gives an excellent commentary about how the car drives and is very positive about that. He also points out that a highly specified M3 is nearly double the price. He doesn’t explain why he prefers to drive the M3, one could infer he meant the weight, but he makes that point quite strongly.
Blame Aussies, in particular R.Murdoch. He killed journalism in UK, Australia and the US.

Totally agree with you, Sam. I have been driving a 2022 Tesla 3 Performance for the last year or so. I drive it fast, and it is REALLY fast. It took me about 3 days to adjust to the no noise factor (and I thought I would miss it!). The silence is wonderful. The only faster car that I have driven is a McLaren 720S - a beautiful machine that I only had for a few days. It had all the great noises, fabulous torque and dynamics - a real racing machine - but not a practical car for normal driving. Which do I prefer for my day to day driving? The Tesla. I have just ordered the new model. The Brits must be suffering from myopia or bias, not sure which, or why.

An AWD M3 starts at $83K here in the US; the Tesla M3P $54K.
Many of the EV comparison to ICE fail to compare like for like. They will compare the weight of an AWD Tesla to a FWD Honda or Camry. They seem to want to do a similar thing with price comparisons. Much of the capability of a Tesla is simply not available in an ICE car.
Then add in cost of ownership! Gas alone for the M3 + maintenance at super expensive BMW specific shops. After 3-5 years the difference in total cost will be huge.

I love those m3p esp if it pulls like a model s long range it’s the perfect car for me . I’m anticipating the feeling of a model
S long range with a substantial handling upside .
Having a sporting coupe pass you with such power and speed, silently with nothing more than a whoosh of tyre noise is magic. Those who want noise are attention seekers.
I agree with you.
A quick check of kerb weight on Car and Driver shows, 2024 Model 3 (albeit LR) at 1830kg, 2024 M3 Competition xDrive at 1782kg and 2024 C63s at 2154kg. Yeah, the M3P might be a couple of Big Macs heavier but it's close enough that it's not a point of contention in my opinion. Comparing the MG Cybester to a Lotus Elise and then sure you can talk weight if that's your angle but that's not a fair comparison either.
All the other stuff is just because that's how people have "measured" an involved driving experience. If ICEs had come along now to replace EVs then they'd be complaining about the need to change gear etc. Besides, you can argue you only need a gearbox in the traditional sense because the optimal operating band of an ICE is so small!
I own a Model 3 highland long range. And I love this car. However the only thing I miss is some sort of sound. Every time I hear a nice ICE car I still get a bit jealous. Still wouldn’t swap.
Right on, agree 100%!
I 100% agree with you!
New Top Gear is barely watchable even when reviewing gas cars. The fun of the Clarkson, May, Hammond era is long gone.
Well said! UK media needs to evolve.
Im a tesla fan but took a ride in an model y uber recently and thought tbe suspension was atrocious. I dont remember most car reviewer's mentioning this when they were waxing lyrically about the model y. Sometimes its good to have different viewpoints.
There is a conncetion between the machine and human through senses. Lack of an engine noise takes away an element of that but it takes nothing away from the crazy car this new model 3 Performance is. I drove the last version and was beyond fast, this new version is just... well... a lot of points on the driving license! :)
TG/AT should know the billions of people will never pay for fake things.
We live in a time of technological transition. People certainly had similar concerns when switching from horses to the combustion engine.
Tesla should offer a Porsche-like engine sound profile that mimics gear shifts with the acceleration of the electric motor that can be heard only inside the cabin as an option! That would be fun!
You are spot on. UK auto journalists seem a tad infantile and like to look backwards, going on about a missing manual gearbox and howling engine etc. I absolutely love my Tesla model 3 and don’t miss my previous BMW X5 50i (weight 2,600kg) or its expensive maintenance and fuel guzzling. You either get the Tesla philosophy or you don’t. All good, there are plenty of alternatives out there. Me, I’m going to order the model 3 performance as it ticks all my boxes. Sub to your channel 😊
Feedback and sensory cues are crucial in our interactions with machines, especially when it comes to driving. Integrating artificial engine noises or other feedback mechanisms can help bridge this gap for consumers transitioning from traditional vehicles to electric ones. It's about providing options and accommodating different preferences while also recognizing the broader goal of accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles for environmental sustainability.
How did you manages to not laugh out loud throughout that video? That was British dark humour at its best. Thank you for this!

Totally agree with you about this. The two UK sites are not dedicated EV channels and there is a bias to ICE but the level of sloppy reporting is disappointing.
I'm in the uk and I'm embarrassed too... there's no place for fake anything in my view. The quietness of a Tesla is a feature I love!
I used to put playing cards in the spokes of my bike and pretend it had an engine. I thought it was pretty cool. Of course I was just 8 years old.
the option for a simple, audible stepped regen braking would be nice for most performance oriented EVs - so you don't just have to rely on the seat of your pants when entering or exiting a corner. I think it also helps to have the audible queues and limited revs in drift mode - so you don't overcook it or wind up constantly hitting the traction control instead of relying on driving skills :D ... That said, I'm sure you could go back to old TG episodes where they probably disparage artificial engine noise in EVs, so they should probably make up their mind.
Your closing remark about horse poop noises is hilarious and exposes the critics for being ridiculous. 😂
Yeah......a CVT/ DSG is definitely a big miss for the maintenance dependent dealerships.

We are in a transition period, between the well-established and familiar appeal of a performance ICE car, namely a good manual transmission, powerful and aurally appealing engine, and a well-sorted chassis that is balanced and quick but also communicative to the driver (through the transmission, brakes, steering and sound) are fading away, and we are moving to EVs, that don't have a lot of that, by design. So people have to get their heads around that, which is not easy for everyone. I see the appeal in the former, having owned manual BMWs and I still love some of the al time great performance ICE cars. However, I also see the appeal of a performance EV (I currently drive a LR Model 3 with acceleration boost, lowered and 20" Uberturbines with Pilot Sport 4S tyres), namely extreme performance, great balance and low centre of gravity, and amazing value for money. The missing parts, ie. (good sounding) engine noise, the connection you get through a manual transmission, brakes and throttle control, as well as good feelsome steering, are largely missing in EVs, and people need time to mourn their loss, while also recognising the benefits and the necessity, of moving forward. Both sides have some merit.
The Top Gear review of the MG Cyberster wasn't too bad, of course they mentioned how heavy it was
Some say the Cyber Truck is too heavy yet it weighs the same to less than the Diesel Ford Superduty Pickup trucks.
Some of these guys would likely put fake motor sounds on a Sail Boat. Whats next... Fake shopping mall and big crowd sounds for wilderness camping?
Truth be told one of the biggest complaints against early ICE vehicles was the excessive noise and exhaust fumes. And while I don't recall hearing about fake horse noises I do remember seeing photos of some early automobiles that had fake Horse Heads sticking out of the front like a kids Hobby Horse on the broom stick or part of a carousel ride.
Best!
I completely agree, Sam. Some of these journalists need to calibrate their moral compasses.
As soon as I can afford it, I will trade in our 2018 Model 3 (which we just love!!) for a Dual Motor Refreshed Model 3 oe possibly a RWD Standard Model 3 with the LFP batteries actually. I think the car looks stunning, and its tech and craftsmanship have gone up several notches.
Jason Cammisa is the guy to listen to. Gearhead who speaks the truth.
Hi Sam I’m from the UK and agree with everything you’ve said. These shows and presenters are petrol heads who unfortunately are biased and will remain archaic in their views and opinions
Agree completely it’s like when we first had jets they should have put fake propellers on them.
Top gear also complained that car wheels don't squeak and engines don't make loud horse sounds like they do in horse and buggies. They also complained that internet modems don't make dial-up clicking noises either.
Hi Sam,
thank you.
I don't think these journalists are being totally honest with themselves.
A good journalist reviews, makes honest evaluations, critiques technology, and assessments of the value of a product ( in this case a car) so the reading public can make informed decisions.
They can write what they like, ultimately the readers will decide by buying or not buying the story.
Their comments appear contrary to popular mainstream views, suggesting these journalists have driven off the road into the ditch.
Great Posts
I see only seven negative points, not so good on M3:
-No good underbody protection (Too little wax in hollow space)
-Problems with undercarriage/wishbone at 50000 Miles
-no bumper sensors
- missing velocity screen or head up in front /no turn signal lever
-no real leather version
-back trunk lid does not open like BMW I4 widely
-no DCC variable suspension
-high repair costs after crash (insurance costs)
When I was about six years old, I took some playing cards and used clothes pins to attach them to my bike so when the wheel spokes hit them, they sounded sort of like a fake motorcycle engine. If Top Gear, et al, want fake engine noises on a Tesla, I recommend they use the playing card trick to get it. I love the quiet of my Tesla. I also love the fact that it has no transmission. Beauty is in simplicity!
