Yeah because you aren't destroying the engine and putting out more nox gas because the epa doesn't like it there like anti gun activists don't have the faintest clue what they're talking about but will write laws against it law makers do one thing and one thing only and that is make laws to stay relevant it matters not if they make sense if it did half the laws we have would not even exist

I was going to buy a new Cummins in the spring of ‘07. I had the choice between the 5.9 and 6.7. I parked them next to each other and popped the hoods on both for comparison. That said, my 5.9 averages 17mpg with a tuner. You wont get anywhere near that fuel economy with Emmisions, which is ironic because the EPAs solution to reduced emissions, is to use more fuel to create more emissions.

Some other important differences to note about the 03-04 third gen 5.9 Cummins vs the 04.5-07 third gen 5.9 Cummins. The 03-04 has two injection events, a different spray angle on the injector nozzles, different pistons, and the non-California 03-04 had no catalytic converter, just a muffler. All changes after the 03-04 Cummins engines had to do with stricter federal emissions laws and compliance with them. The 04.5-07 5.9s have three injection events, the third of which has to do with emissions reductions, as well as different piston bowls and spray angles on the injectors for emissions control. The 6.7 Cummins engines were designed completely around the need for stricter emissions standards, including having five injection events. The best combination for power would be early third gen electronics/injectors paired with the larger displacement of a 6.7.

One random interesting fact. A buddy of mine worked in auto auctions a while back and told me something interesting. If you live in a state with out inspections and you delete a trucks DEF system, then get in an accident where the truck is declared total loss by insurance and take the check like you normally would. When the rebuilder purchases the truck at auction and finds out the deletes have been done. They actually have recourse against you because they will never be able to get that truck to pass the inspection that changes the title from salvage to rebuilt. It's similar to odometer discrepancy cases where you essentially sold something to someone which you knew it was worth significantly less. The only way to truly protect yourself if you own a deleted truck and it gets totaled is to buy it back from insurance and sell it to a scrap yard yourself. But you're going to take a financial hit there because the scrap price is going to be less than the offer you have to make to insurance. Just something I thought you all might find interesting.

New Stage 1 turbo still on factory tune. Upped the hp to 370 and about 525 torque. Went from stock tire to 35” with a 3” suspension lift. Ride is a little rougher for now with only 400 miles on it. But expecting it to settle in within the year. Had a 2014 6.7 and was not overly impressed with the performance with the emissions. Just picked up a used bed from the south. I’m around farmers, who use the Dodge to tow farm equipment, with that being said they ALL wish they had the 5.9 over the 6.7, they are more dependable, and get better mileage. Emissions is the killer for the diesels, and that’s coming from a technician that works at Dodge, To solidify this theory look no further than newer tractors with emissions, they are always in the shop because of emissions system failures (look at the statistics). As for the Transmission, I own an 05, and the transmission went out at 135000 miles. I took it to Browns Diesel in Riverdale Ca. And they rebuilt it with Goerend transmission parts (billet flexplate, triple disc billet torque converter, billet input, intermediate shaft, billet high pressure Valve Body, and all internal components replaced with Goerend parts). It cost me $7000.00 and Browns guarantees it for life, and it’s good up to a 1000 hp. I have had zero problems with this truck after the transmission was rebuilt. I put a AFE intercooler, and tubes, AFE cold air intake, and replaced the transmission cooler, AC condenser and radiator with all aluminum parts for increased cooling. I live in California in the Sierra Nevada foothills and it’s hot here. I have owned my truck for 14 years, and I pull my tractor and other farm equipment plus my 30 ft toyhauler, and I can pull any grade including the 58 through Tehachapi, and Pacheco Pass with no issues. That 5.9 is a beast, and I wouldn’t choose a different truck. STAY AWAY FROM THE NEWER DIESELS, THE EMISSION SYSTEMS ARE THE DOWNFALL FOR THESE TRUCKS AND ANYTHING ELSE WITH A DIESEL ENGINE. DO THE RESEARCH!

I live in CA and have been looking at getting a 2006. Banks has enough legal aftermarket parts to give a reasonable boost. ATS performance has the best transmission upgrades available. If you want an allison swap on a 6.7, ATS Sells the allson with horse power ratings up to 1100 horse power. They also manufacture a bell housing that matches up with the Cummins so you do not need adapter plates and can use the stock starter. They have an electronics package which allows all the accessories to work also.

I have and 2005 5.9 I bought in March of 2010 with 151,000 miles and a plow for $19,600. At that point I knew a guy with a 12 valve Cummins with 380k on it . I sit here now a little over 13 yrs later with 334k on mine. The body and paint aren’t great. But most maintenance is joints, oil, brakes steering, water pump etc. It runs consistently and goes. I’m debating finding a new one to buy. More for outside appearance and less interior wear. Thing is, they want more for the same truck today than I paid 13 yrs ago.(seeing mid 20’s online) 🤔still wrapping my mind around that

Got a 06, upgraded the torque converter and installed a upgraded valve body, got a VGT turbo kit so I got the 6.7 improvement for breathing. But I have to wonder what are the bugs that will need fixing. I’m only at 200,000 and shop time has been reasonable. But when it breaks on the road do to cheaper design parts. Like the injector line, ball joints, trans control unit, torque converter… etc. The drivers seat gears.
What are the normal issues high mileage trucks run into? How about a show on that?
