- In today's video we discuss how to prevent and plan for power outages, emergency evacuations, fires, and more. This includes how to make your emergency "Grab and Go" bin that every reptile owner should have! That doesn't mean you should make it later- you need it prepared NOW so it's ready for an emergency situation.
Note: The cool packs will obviously need to be chilled for best results (though even room temp is cooler than some outdoor temps), but should still be kept in your supplies bin so you have them with you while evacuating.

We were without power for 76 hours in sub-freezing temperatures, and as soon as the power went out, my snake emergency bin was fully stocked and ready to safely hold our ball pythons and keep them warm while we figured out what to do next. I think one very important tip is missing: Have fire alarms! They save lives. If you have a high risk area in your house like rooms with uv lights or heat pads, place an extra fire alarm in this room so if a fire was to occur it is detected quickly. Also make sure that at least one of them is in hearing distance of your bedroom so you wake up.

And remember to test them regularly! A smoke detector is useless if it isn't working.
Alarms should be a given. I guess some people need to be told.
Fire alarms are usually planted into houses when you get them, but yes this is a good suggestion to the ones who already dont

I can't imagine how heartbreaking it would be to see dead snakes who had tried to survive a house fire in its water dish.

Honestly it made me think. I may not have snakes but I have 2 dogs and 2 cats I could easily snag my dogs but my cats I might not be able to and that would break my heart.

Remember, tell the firefighters that there's pets on the property and what those pets are (especially if you've cracked your snake racks to let them escape). It prepares the firefighters for the potential sight of a slithering friend, and they may be able to rescue more of the animals that you can't or focus on putting out fire in the area of your enclosures first to preserve life.
This. So much this. When I was working as a firefighter, we had this kind of situation happen. Guy said he had 10 hognose snakes he couldn't get out. The fire was in the back half of the house, close ot the snake room. We were able to get 9 out (the other was hidering quite well!) so we made sure to get the fire out ASAP, and all sneks survived because he let us know they were in there.

If the fire doesn’t start in the reptiles room, having doors shut to their rooms at all times could help prevent smoke inhalation. Or cracking a window and shutting a door to a room if you have to leave them behind. Also, put a sticker on the windows that say “reptile room” (that you can see from outside) to alert fire fighters there are live animals in there. For tornados, high winds, etc. you could prepare before hand by trying to secure racks to a wall and throw blankets or comforters over the racks or enclosures to help shield them from flying debris. People will shield themselves by grabbing a mattress off a bed and placing it on top of themselves. Obviously, you can do the same concept with pets but only if you have time. My dad is a professional fire fighter and saw too many people lose their lives by trying to save animals. I know it’s hard but you have to think logically and your life is more valuable. Fire fighters do try and save pets. My dad did CPR successfully on numerous dogs and cats. These are only my ideas. I sadly did have a house fire and a flood. I lost everything twice and it absolutely is devastating but like anything else, you can recover.
These are good tips but I don't know if opening windows in a fire is a good idea as it lets more oxygen into the house and might feed the fire to burn even faster. But that's just based on some fire emergency training from like sixth grade where they really drilled in the point of closing all the doors and windows on your way out, so I'm not sure if the risk of that outweighs the pro of providing ventilation.

krissy beaubien Tornados are probably one of the hardest emergencies to prepare for. Sure if they’re calling for severe weather in advance, but thunderstorms can intensify quickly and tornados seem to love to spawn at night. For fires, it’s a good idea to place stickers on windows stating how many of each kind of pet is in the house so firefighters are aware. My indoor only cat is microchipped because one never knows what could happen. I live in FL and while we have a plan about what to do if we have to evacuate due to a hurricane (cats are among the first things put in the cars), anything could happen to the house and something could spook her to the point she gets outside (she hates the outdoors). I know Florida has regulations and laws on how to contain and secure non-native species kept in captivity during hurricanes... no need to have a repeat of Andrew causing an invasion of pythons...
My life is not more valuable. If it was I wouldn't be hear (u have no clue where I live so you don't know) sorry but I don't care if I'm gonna die sorry but it's true.
JaniskaTheDudeska if the door is closed, there is less chance of a backdraft and if the fire is located further away from the window, it will help ventilate the smoke out. It should only be cracked and not fully open.
Man I only have a few reptiles, I couldn’t imagine having a whole collection like you do and essentially having to pick who has the best chance to live and who you’ll have to leave to try to fend for themselves. Hopefully you never have to make that hard choice, but thanks for showing us some awesome ways to plan for the worst.

PASS is such bull because it uses to of the same letters and you can mix them up if you didn't already train yourself to follow the steps.
Also a lot of fire departments will let you practice with your extinguisher if you ask them.

This is a big thing down here in Australia, every house is supposed to have a 'fire plan'. Also don't just set and forget your emergency preparations. Things like heat packs, fire extinguishers, medications and batteries have used by dates so it's best to check your bins twice a year and make sure everything is up to date! :)
Agreed. We don't have reptiles, but we have a briefcase with all important documents. That, and my dog, are the only things we grab in an emergency

yeah we've got a fire box with a bunch of important things like that, as well as a few photo albums, and a hard drive full of photos that each of us back up pics to every now and then

(also I hope you have not had to use it, but if you have, I am glad you are safe)
Even better, it's good to practice your plan ESPECIALLY if the home has children. And include a meeting spot line of site from the house where everyone knows to meet to avoid tragedies where parents go back inside looking for children who made it out safely, then don't survive.
My four-year-old daughter randomly asks to practice our emergency drill. It's usually super inconvenient and still, I try to say yes every time.

Some people are dedicated fish keepers with big, expensive aquariums, and I'd bet they would be fairly attached to at least a few of their long-lived fish.

@@QueenofSilence101 It would be tricky, especially with lots of/large fish, but you could. 5 gal buckets could work for that, just throw them in with some aquarium water and an air stone if you have one and get out of there. Should be ok for a while, depending on the fish.
This video is so necessary. Thanks for doing an emergency prep video. I lost two ball pythons after an ice storm took out our power for three weeks because they got too cold. We didn’t have a generator and all the heat packs were sold out in our state after the first week.

Ever since I was little I've had a fire emergency plan. I know which animals to grab and in what order. I know to grab my puppy last because if I need to run he will absolutely run beside me. And I know to grab my cat and Hedgehog first because they're the ones who would just lay there and nap as a fire roars beside them

A lot of cats in house fires their first instinct is to hide. So it could be really hard to find your cat. If they're lucky, they might find a place to hide that keeps them safe, but if not, they're likely to be too scared to escape on their own.

That's odd that cats will choose to hide until it's too late. Even domesticated cats are fantastic predators; you'd think they'd be inclined to run ASAP. Huh.
@@QueenofSilence101 Thats the key thing tough. Theyre predators, not prey. Theyre made to pounce and stalk, not run. So in danger their defense is attack or hide, not run away. The deer sprints acros the plains and escapes the fire. The cougar climbs the tree and burns.

A year ago I lost 2 of my snakes from a house fire.
After I got my daughter out, I tried running back in to get my snakes. My bf wouldn't allow me, but he ran in and grabbed my spider ball. But couldn't grab the other two.
I am still thankful one of my snakes survived. I now have emergency plan... and my snakes are close to a window I can push them out in bins

And depending on where the fire/gas leak or whatever home disaster where would be occurring n the house, she could just GENTLY AND CAREFULLY toss Rex out the window to get her outside to safety instead of having to carry a heavy alligator thru the house out the front or back door...

Although I don't own reptiles, I have a dog. I don't give a darn what anyone says. I'll run into a inferno in order to save her. She's like my kid. I can assure you, if I had reptiles, they would have the same extended to them. My animals are my family.
I know this is an old video and an old comment but I just have to get this off my chest. So many people say things like this and I don't think they get it.
My family had a house fire 20 years before I was born, nearly 40 years ago when my parents were young teens. In that fire people died. And I have heard their stories my whole life. The stories of that little baby who never got to grow up and his dad that couldn't bare to leave him behind. And the story of the aunt I never got to meet.
Who was smart and kind and only 2 months from graduating high school, who had already been accepted into the college of her dreams and who dreamed of spending her life helping disabled children.
My aunt Cathy lead her to cousins out of the house. They busted out a screen to escape but just as she was about to escape she heard the cat meowing for help. She left her escape route for the cat, got turned around in the smoke and never found another way out.
I've seen the nightmares, the ptsd, the near panic at the sight of fire trucks at a house 2 blocks down. Everyone that lived through it is still traumatized.
The whole family talks about them all the time every good memory, every joke, every dream they had.
And then Cathy died because she went back for the cat. Neither Cathy or the cat made it out that day but they have never even mentioned the cats name. I'm sure the cat was a member of the family, I'm sure the cat was loved, I'm sure they would tell me if I asked but they never mentioned it, and I've never thought to ask.
It no longer matters that the cat died in a fire 40 years ago. It is nearly forgotten, but Cathy isn't. Every dream that never happened, every birthday and holiday she didn't get to see still matter even now.
Pets are great, I love all of my pets like family. I make sacrifices for them and put their needs over mine in most circumstances but if it is ever between your life and your pet, put you first. Trust me, please.
If you lose your pet it will be aweful but your family and friends losing you will be so much worse. If it puts your life at risk don't do it. It isn't something people ever get over it will haunt them forever. Live to dream another day, see the next birthday, and to celebrate the next milestone.
TLDR
Don't risk your life for your animals it isn't worth the possible consequences.

The way I see it is that if you go back in for your animals and 1) you already got some out, or 2) some escape or survive on their own, you're risking leaving the living ones without a caretaker. If you have 20 snakes and you get 15 out but die trying to save 5 more, where are those 15 gonna go? It's great if you have someone else in your life willing to take in 15 snakes on short notice, but most of the time that's just not possible. Not to mention, as others have said, your pets are your family but the people in your life will feel sad remembering your bearded dragon in 30 years, but theyll be absolutely devastated having to mourn you.

One more thing to add, make sure to buy emergency bins that have latches! Even if your snake is small, I promise they are stronger than they look. They can easily push the top off of regular bins by making themselves into little car jacks, and they will escape!
🐍 🔥We very nearly where evacuated with the bushfires here in Victoria Australia two weeks ago, and while we didn't have to leave, we did loose power, and thus our ability to cool our animals on the hottest day in 150 years here!

We have from 40plus degree weather coming though so will be keeping an eye on the emergency warnings over the next week

i have an idea for evacuation; have a small shed outside with the bins set up for your snakes and have a bag next to every enclosure so you can put the snake in a bag, bring them all out and put them in proper setups. i don't know if it would work but i think it might.

I think if you have a car, you could store the bins in your car instead, and do the rest how you described. If you have as many snakes as Emily, it probably isn't convenient to keep that many bins in your cars at all times, but in that case, throwing all the snakes in the big bin will probably be easier than using many pillow cases.
It's good to keep an emergency kit in your car even without pets, but remember that many medications will be ruined by extreme heat, so it's probably not a good place to keep medication.

This vid made me cry because I had a house fire yesterday and I already new to crack the tanks and my snake lizard and sadly they died but I managed to save my two turtles that were breeding at the time so this vid shows how much u need to be prepared for these things

thank you so much for putting this together. really useful info here! my daughter was in a tornado last may, in an area that NEVER has tornadoes, we were not prepared. she was ok, her building wasn't hit but the tornado hopped over destroyed the buildings to the left and right and seriously damaged the one directly across from her. we weren't allowed back in to get her snake for over a week. her mice all died and cannibalized each other it was awful on so many levels. we were finally allowed back in, but had only 5 minutes to grab and leave because the house wasn't stable. i literally grabbed the mice habitat, threw the ball python down my shirt and ran back out. seriously awful. i didn't know i was carrying a box of dead half eaten breeder mice :( have a plan, make a kit, practice using it.

I have always had an emergency plan for any pets I had an also just for me and my partner. I like that she also covered the part of having an escape plan for your family.
I agree it is so import to have a back up plan and never use it than not usve one and need to use it
It makes me sad to realise that if their house ever catches fire a lot of their reptiles including Rex would likely perish
Edit: yes I am aware of that building they bought but it's not ready yet and anything could happen before then, and yes I know she's on the first floor but if the place is on fire they can't throw her out, plus she doesn't like being carried as we all know.
They said this in another video (can't remember which one) that Rex is at ground level next to a window so they will just trow her out of the window in an emergency so he can likely survive. But yeah the thought of their house burning down makes me sad too. There are so many animals that I don't think they will save everyone in time no matter how well prepared.
@@laartje24 i mean they did just buy themselves a facility. if they move all the reptiles (i forgot if they said they are or not) to that facility and depending on what the building is made of a fire may not be likely and the reptiles may be pretty safe. and who knows maybe it will have one of those sprinklers in it just in case of a fire.
You know for sure their new place is going to be completely decked out in stuff to keep your reptiles safe
I suspect most of their reptiles will soon be at the new facility which probably has sprinklers. I know they talked about a habitat there for Rex

Probably goes without say, but this video applies to everyone no matter what your pet is! I have a dog so in my “go bag” I have a small container of food, a bottle of clean water, an extra harness and leash, a small towel, a mini first aid kit, and my dog has some health issues due his old age, so I also have some backup meds for him in there as well.
If my house is burning and all else fails my snakes are native and I might just yeet them out the window
That's... actually not a terrible idea. Unless they have like crazy morphs that would allow them to easily be spotted by predators. Imma keep that in mind when I finally feel ready to get snakes 😊

This video hits really different when you've gone through it. Christmas Eve I lost power and it's way too cold where I live for my snakes to not have heat. It was storming HARD and I had to spend the night with my friends and I didn't sleep at all. These strategies work and helped so much.

@@miloainsworth5423 we have a fox rescue here and live way out in the country so just need our outdoor secure area and we r all set. Its something we have always wanted and of course will only have an orphan fox who needs a home.

I was freaking out for a second when you said your friend threw the bin with snakes out the window - and then you said they lived on the ground floor thank goodness lol.
I think letting the snakes out is an excellent idea, if that’s the best you can do, since the important thing is to not inhale the fumes - that was the advice anyway given to me as a kid about fires, to lie on the ground because none of the smoke is there. So sad about the ones curled up in their water dishes though :(
This breaks my heart.. most people have plans to get pets like cats and dogs out, never crossed my mind that people with snakes or other reptiles would need more prep than just grabbing the animal and getting out. I don't have any snakes or reptiles but am hooked on this channel! So educational and interesting.. Emily is awesome!!!

Damp/wet towels usually cool down a small space when put in there or a body when placed on said body. Kinda like how grandma tries to help you getting rid of a fever and wraps damp cloth around your legs.
Mine always put the cool cloth on the back of my neck.. legs is a good idea 😲

Yeah, I would say that. Animals are remarkably good at saving themselves in emergences, just make sure they can get out.
This was really helpful! We recently had a power outage for a few hours and I had to keep my Leopard Gecko down my shirt so she could stay warm! I’m glad this method was approved 😅

YES! Thank you so much! There was a really bad fire in my town where a family of 6 died from a gas fire, and I was panicking over what would happen to my reptiles if there was a fire.

Please remember to mind the expiration dates on fire extinguishers! They can lose pressure and become ineffective after their expiration date. You can find services online, or contact your local fire station, and have your extinguishers recharged and evaluated once they've reached their expiration. This can extend their usefulness for a period of time (length depends on the extinguisher).

I'm so happy I watched this video... I have thought a few times about what I would do with my two snakes and my turtle (and my 6 large goldfish) in an emergency, and I never made a plan. I'm gonna get the supplies to make my emergency bins tonight! I think for the goldfish I'll just get a 5 gallon bucket with a lid... man it's stressful to think about the fish
I know this is an old comment, sorry, but a little tip. You might want to include a battery powered air stone with your bucket, since goldfish need so much oxygen. It could really help keep your babies going
I'm so glad you made this video. I cried the whole time watching it. I survived hurricane Harvey and luckily so did all my pets and reptiles. It was so difficult and scary. We where all homeless for a while and certain people would help till I was able to get home to my parents in Massachusetts. And they survived a 3 day car trip. I could only get my hands on stirefoam coolers but it retained the heat so well . But I am to this day paranoid about have a plan for them incase something happens.
I have a bin for every reptile that I own. (Except my cornsnake, his bin is is the same size as my emergency bins) but I need to make a supply bin. Thanks for the tips!

This was actually really useful. We went out of town a couple of weeks ago, only for the weekend but our power went off about 4pm on the Saturday and we didn't get back until 10pm Sunday. Our corn, Sir Galahad, didn't seem too bothered by the situation. We took him out and warmed him up with body heat whilst his mat was heating back up and he's fine. But we are now considering one of the battery extensions, and writing a contingency plan for our landlord/neighbours just in case.
Thank you so much for putting this video out when you did. I live in South Minneapolis and had to leave my house due to the fires a few blocks away. The preparation you talked thru here made it so much easier for me to feel safe taking my new baby Sunshine, an 8 month old Sunkissed Snow Corn snake, with me when I left. He weathered the time in his temporary bin like a champ, even eating while we were in this stressful situation. Thank you again, for everything you do.

Then we have another 2 week break in early August, we go back late August. Then we have another 2 week break in October, come back. Then, mid December we have a six week break and go back end of Jan.

I wonder if it’s good to have the snake bags ready on top of the bins to throw in the more cannabalistic ones or even different types so that then you can sort them properly once safe to do so into their temp bins?

I was thinking the same thing. I don't have a king, but If I did that might be my go to plan. Somthing with a drawstring to make sure it can't get out easily for a while till I could get to it.

If you have a crate and he sleeps in your room, keep some treats in there to lure him into the crate so you can take him outside :)

I never thought of just opening the tanks as a last ditch effort. I'm always terrified about natural disasters and what to do if I can't get to all my pets in time. The main one I worry about where I live are tornados. Thank you for this video! It makes me feel so much better :)

For someone looking into getting a snake, this is an amazing video. Thanks! Even though emergency situations don't happen often, its good to at least have an idea of what you should prepare if it were to ever happen
When she said that the snakes tried to cool off in their water dishes my heart dropped. I just thought of how scary that would be for the snake. They have no idea whats happening but its so hot and in a desperate attempt to stay alive they curl up in small pools of water not knowing what to do as they slowly and painfully die there all alone.
Side note: I have one leopard gecko and that is all as far as reptiles but I also have three fish tanks and two mice and it breaks my heart that in an instance where my house catches on fire I wouldn't be able to save all my fish. To anybody that hasnt had fish as their main pet you probably think it sounds silly but I love my fish so much. I keep a couple jars in my room just in case there was an emergency but I know I wouldn't be able to get them all. Not to mention we have two cats and a dog we'd also have to grab. Honestly I think a fire is one of the worst things that ever happen to anyone and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.

I think mostly it's important to remind yourself, not everything is entirely preventable. Yes, a LOT is; common sense & due diligence go a long way, but even planning and preparing every day, there are still things that can take you by surprise. Obviously it would be a very traumatic/emotional thing to deal with (the fire itself, and the after-affects), but mostly to keep in mind, you can only do your best, and not to take on unnecessary guilt. Sorry if this sounds preachy!! I am definitely an emotional crybaby at even the thought of something happening to my pets.. it's all about striving for balance.

Last year I had to evacuate my house due to fires... I took the whole 20 gallon tank. This is sooo helpful!!!! Thank you for this thoughtful video
Suggestion: I live in a wildfire area. There are a couple of pet shops in my region that will board reptiles for free for up to a week for people in evacuation zones. So check with the pet shops and reptile stores in your area and see if any would be willing to do this in the event of a natural disaster. You can also check with your local veterinarians and ask if they would be willing to board your snakes in an emergency. Even a vet that isn't a reptile specialist may be willing to keep your tubs in a warm back room for a few days if needed. This may be important if you end up having to go to a shelter, as shelters will not take reptiles.

Perfect timing! I was taking a shower last night and suddenly the light turned off. It wound up just being a blown bulb, but my first thought was, "Oh no, how am I going to keep Noodle warm until the power comes back on?" Now I have a few heat packs stashed with his stuff.

It's good to see these kind of videos. I no longer have reptiles but I have a ferret, and in case of emergency I have a bag fully ready with a travel enclosure, bottle of water, food, bowls, kitty litter, litter box, blanket, collar, and leash. I use this bag when I take him with me and we stay overnight so I know I have all the necessities. It's ready near the door so I know I won't forget it. One time when I was out, I got a text from my mother that there was a fire in the building my apartment is located in, so I asked her to go and check. He was fine and there was no smoke in the house, but she knows about the bag too.
Point is! If you have someone near who has a key, and you yourself are out, and something happens, make sure they too know the escape route and the rescue plan!!
