    When thawing out my Snook's food, I just use a dedicated plastic container with about an inch of "as hot as I can get it" water from the faucet. I just toss the mouse in, put on the lid, and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes. After thawing, I just pat it dry with a paper towel and Viola! One warm mouse for one happy little sand sausage!
    The only thing that worries me about this method is the fact that tap water can be harmful to snakes, unless you use reptisafe or some other method to nullify its harmful effects.
    Also, I just wanted to add that I love your channel. I've learned quite a bit from you and your videos! Can't wait to see more! lol

    Novice tips for thawing rodents if a family member is a germaphobe:
    1. Put rodent in a plastic bag, then place it in a disposable cup.
    2. Thaw in fridge to reduce bacteria growth. Do NOT thaw it at room temp.
    3. When thawed, remove from fridge. Heat water in the microwave and pour it into the cup.
    4. When warm, feed to snake using tongs. Afterwards, throw used cup and bag away
    5. Thoroughly clean tongs and hands. Disinfect sink if you have to.
    This is honestly what I have to do because my mom is afraid of cross contamination. As much as I’d like to designate an old plastic container for thawing rats (thus saving myself from throwing an insane amount of solo cups in the trash) she won’t let me. Even though I’ll happily clean it out like I do with the tongs. Oh well. The fact that she’ll let me keep a snake and frozen rats in the house at all is more than I could have asked for.

    • @Hi_Im_Akward
      @Hi_Im_Akward ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you actually this helps me figure out that aspect. I don't have a snake yet but the cleanliness aspect concerns me. I don't mind designating and thoroughly sanitizing a cup every time but the idea of having a rodent uncontained in the fridge eeks me out. Also the heating of water in a separate container is brilliant, that probably was my biggest gross out factor. I don't want to throw out a bunch of plastic so I will probably figure out reusable non poris containers that are easy to sanitize.

      I clean my snake things in my bathroom sink so my husband doesn’t have to look at a mouse in a mug in the kitchen where we prepare food. So after I thaw it I warm it in the bathroom out of the bag for 2-3 mins until they eat.

    Fed my ball python frozen/thawed for the first time yesterday. She was severely confused at first, but it might have been because the has never seen a BLACK mouse before. I put it outside her cave, she came to out and just started tonguing at it for a few minutes. I thought it might be too cold for her to recognize as food, but when I bumped it just a little bit with the tweezers she immediatly grabbed it and dragged it into her cave. She didn't try to wrap or choke it like she's used to with live food, so she must've realized on some level that it wasn't alive anymore. Still gobbled it right up though. Anyways, keeping snakes is fun.

I have only had her for a year, I failed once when I first got her. After watching this video and taking the tips, I decided to try again. I thawed it out correctly and instead of holding the mouse by the tail, I held it by the back end. Sure enough, she took it!
    I wanted to get her to switch, since she almost lost her eye from a live feed, but I didn't know how. I'm so happy I can now feed her thawed without worry anymore. I'm sorry this is drawn out, but seriously, thank you for the amazing education!

I have 2 corn snakes who are around 14 years old, I have had them from a few months old, and you have helped me realise I can make their homes more exciting and interesting for them. More importantly though feeding time is now lovely and calm and I don't feel like they are completely unreadable mysteries thanks to your body language video! I've also realised that the female (I think) is becoming underweight, so I'm starting to increase her feeds slightly, she's always been bigger and I was feeding them both the same. I just didn't realise until I saw your video about snake weights. So thank you!!

    For those of us in Canada, but specifically Alberta, First Strike Snakes is fantastic! And if you live near Edmonton you can do pick up and skip the whole shipping cost. I just got my first snake a few weeks ago and one of the people at one of those 'big chain pet stores' recommended them as the place they go for mice, and they have been extremely helpful and have decently priced mice.

    Very fortunate in where I get my rodents. We have a local aquarium store that used to sell snakes. They don’t any longer, but they still sell the food. We’ve dealt with them for over 40 years, so I can go in and pick each individual rat/mouse I want. Very close to home, too!

The website you talked about was 1/3rd the cost of the online store I used initially. I also watched a half a dozen of your other videos for tips on heat/humidity care, when/where/how to feed your snake etc. and all of your videos are packed with wonderful information that seem to cover a wide range of reptile care tips from a neutral stand point. So I am really looking foreward to have a petsnake. I fell in love with the mexican Black Kingsnake but the problem is that I live in Germany... It is really hard to find anyone who sells those Snakes and (very important as well) the food! It is not as common to keep snakes as a pet here as it is in America. But America does not ship to germany (snakes/food) (wich ich totally understandable)
    If you should not have any more Videoideas some time: Would you like to make a Video about how to find breeders (in general)
    and food etc in other countries? Maybe simple tipps?

      You can try searching in animal shelters, the bigger ones usually have a wide selection on snakes. Mostly cornsnakes but if you search long enough you can find anything there. I just looked and the bigger ones sadly don't have mexican blacks right now, though if you are fine with a californian kingsnake, there are plenty of those
      If you are set in mexican blacks however, I can give you this link www.striped-colubrids.ch/zuchtplanung-status/
      You are right, they are hard to find here in Germany, it took me more than an hour! I usually find snakes I'm looking for in less than 10 minutes!
      It doesn' seem like they have any available right now and the site is not very structured, but you can try to get on the waitlist. Good Luck!

    • @reptilerant173
      @reptilerant173 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely wouldn’t say it “builds character” however, feeding live isn’t as bad for the snake as some people make it. Snakes don’t need live and it tends to be more efficient for the owner to feed frozen thawed. However, there are some snakes that will only eat live, so keep that in mind. Also health wise there is no difference, the issue with feeding live is that it can bite your snake and some people don’t want to see a live animal die.

    Seriously awesome video. I have re-done the way I feed my snake recently, and it's SO much better.
    I used to use warm water, and it's not a great smell, and your fingers are wet ad out of action, and the scent of the rat gets washed away, and you need to pat dry it a bit if you don't want water everywhere, or for bedding to stick to it. Uses a cup, and paper towels. It's just annoying. Plus I don't like using really hot water, so I needed to add more hot water over time, which is tedious (I just used a kettle and add a tiny bit).
    Now I just take it from the freezer t night time and put it in the fridge (in a little plastic bag). Then the next day I sit it in front of a ceramic human-heater for 3-5 minutes, then I feed her. So easy.
    Human-heater is quieter and easier than a blowdryer. It's also good because the rat doesn't get wet at all. Which means feeding her in the enclosure is now a thing I can do easily. Which simplifies things.
    Alternatively you could put it in the fridge in the morning, then feed the snake at night time. But either way, it's good in the fridge for like, 2 days to be safe. So there's plenty of leeway with the method too, which is great for flexibility if something comes up.
    Or, you could leave it out at room temperature for like, 3 hours, or more if it's cold. Which is quicker. But then you gotta have it on your mind, and it fluctuates with the daily temps, and you don't have leeway with it. You have to use it. BUT, my snake is fine with room temp. So that's a plus.
    If you really need to go quick at the last moment, then yea the water in a cup method. You can use a plastic bag to prevent it getting wet, but generally the bags aren't a perfect seal, and the rat gets wet anyway. Which is annoying.

    Just a rando person's method of thawing here;
    Place frozen rodent in baggie (I label these with weights so I know how heavy they are, and what snake can eat them).
    Add RO water to baggie, just enough to 'encase' the rodent.
    Add baggie with rodent and water to a gallon ice-cream tub of warm/hot water (I add multiple at a time)
    Allow 30-60 mins for thaw.
    Replace water with hot water (not scalding)
    Allow 10 mins to warm up.
    Remove rodent, and pat dry with paper toweling
    Feed.
    The RO water on the rodent will 'absorb' the scents of the rodent and basically broth it. This has been more successful to me than other methods.

    I like how Emily causally is picking up and moving around a limp, dead rat like a kid with blocks

      With as may snakes as she has, she's likely almost as used to handling snek food as she is to handling people food lol

    I live in a different city than my parents because I'm going to university, and I recently got a ball python. Last Saturday I came home for the first time in three months, and today, my brother got his own ball python.
    Snake fever is contagious!

      @@reptilerant173 mine is an Axanthic Pastel, born July 27th. My brother's is a 'normal' ball python, but he's got some interesting genes according to the breeder: pastel, spider and fire. I haven't really been informed much about that, my brother knows more XD

    I do the running water method, however i use warm water at about 50 degrees celcius. This thaws and warms it in about 10 minutes. I then move the bowl of water and then take it out, shaking it slightly. It is the right temperature by the time it gets to the snake.
