      So true! I think it's easy to get caught up in the "how far did I go" mentality. I know I fall into that headspace too easily, and then feel like I've underperformed. I tell myself that my trips are to recharge my mental capacity for my day job, and that it's a vacation. Mind you that's a tall oder, when I'm lugging around camera gear and trying to make videos at the same time. Laugh.

    Every Spring, eager for a bikepacking trip, and I find snow......why didn't I buy a ??? bike?? I couldn't make out what you said, or I never heard of the bike you're referring to.
    ....And what a sunset that was on the beach. Cool slo-mo. The whole video format is very travel documentary feeling. Really nice scenery. I love the drone action. And going "into the woods" was so lush. I sort of wish I could do this, but I'd never make it. LOL! Oh, and I LOVE the Pink Panther graffiti!! The one thing I'd like to see at the end of your videos is a map with the route highlighted, maybe showing the stops with stars or pop outs or something. It would give viewers the sense of distance travelled.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A fat bike... designed for riding on snow and loose sand.
      As for where I go / the majority of my videos have routes available on RIDEWITHGPS- look I the description, or in the top right of my banner photos.
      This particular trip was not a successful trip as planned so I’m not providing a route, nor did I provide distances. FYI - I rode about 80-90 Km out of town and played in the hills for 2 days and then back. I did a lot of relaxing in my hammock reading on this trip.

      @@barrybogart5436 - I do add undocumented information on my RWGPS maps. (ie bridges are out etc) On this particular video, it was early season and hey... didn't know if the road was going to be snow-free yet. Not a failure to me. Just an eager start to the year.

    A voice from behind - passing behind my chair, "Who's that? where's his fishing rod?" I tut and carry on watching, passing the comment : "Have you managed to fit your new cassette yet?" - the voice mumbles annoyed and goes away to curse at technology and a cassette for their gravel bike. Checking weather for tomorrow morning over the Dales and looking for a nice coppice wood or forest, pine would be ideal. What do I use for cooking? spirit, gas or wood? Curry & rice! good video man, nice.

      Glad to hear it! There are so many similarities between adv-moto and bikepacking. I too have a long history with Moto. From Yamaha RD350 and Kawi H2 750 two-stokes as a young rider/racer, to my last few bikes 71 Moto Guzzi V7 and 2000 KLR 750C (I didn't know how rare that KLR was at that time). But with a growing family, motorcycles faded away, replaced with cycling (I don't think either one is more or less expensive / or risky) - but at least I'm staying fit. I'm happy to hear that my channel is inspiring you to document your adventures and grow as a filmmaker/editor. Feel free to contact me if you ever have questions. I'm always happy to help.

I was going to upgrade to the GoPro hero 9, But i recently bought an insta360 OneX2 camera instead and love it. Hardly use my gopro now. I can just mount it on my bike and not have to worry about framing at all. So i can just concentrate on the ride. And later while editing, i have infinite number of choices.

      @Regantdarcy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SaltyBeard_Adventures I hear ya. I usually don’t upgrade my cameras unless I have to. Much rather spend money on bike upgrades! But I was having some issues with my GoPro hero 7... so was thinking of upgrading to the hero 9. The insta360 oneX2 was about the same price as the hero 9 if you got the gopro without a subscription(at least here in the states). So I went with it and am glad I did. But if nothing is wrong with your gopro, i understand why you wouldn’t want to shell out the $ for an additional camera. Seems like you have enough to produce awesome looking videos. 👍🏼

    Hey man. Now I am certain I saw you heading back home, you were just about at the top of the hill heading down to Jordan River. I also yelled "Hey, Salty Beard!", but you wouldn't have heard me on my motorcycle. That day I went into the logging roads at Lost Creek. My goal was to loop back and come out the way you came in, but I also encountered snow on the road and had to turn back. I stumbled onto your channel researching the Hurley Pass, I have the same trip in mind. It was super useful to see the road conditions at a cycling pace, and you've inspired me to extend my loop. I hope the situation gets better and we can travel to the mainland this summer.
    Ride safe!

      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You were heading north? and I was just standing there (actually filming) One of the passing motorcyclist looked over my way. I was wondering if it was one of the guys I work with as there's a few hardcore ADV guys. I was planning on doing Jordan Ridge north, and then back south on Loss..... apparently even the top end of Loss hadn't been plowed off. Lots of cool Moto/4x4 roads to do out Bralorne & Chilchotin area. How adventurous do you get on your bike? I have lots of unpublished routes, many are 4x4/overland type. if you haven't already, set up a free account on RideWithGPS, and find my route portal. I can set you up with some killer routes all over BC

    • @nekkar8688
      @nekkar8688 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SaltyBeard_Adventures Yes, I was heading north, I'm on a 500cc red adventure bike. I seem to recall you were riding, but it was only a second or two so who knows, haha. I did Jordan Ridge North once last year, just enough space to get my bike past the gate. The fog was super thick that day though, not much scenic viewing.
      I upgraded from a 400cc scooter just last spring, so I am still kinda green offroad. Mainly enjoying the gravel main roads for now, but I have started exploring some double track. I don't have any riding buddies(offroad), so I try to balance challenging my skills with getting my self into a sticky situation. I will check out RidewithGPS for sure.
      If you like enchanted forests, last Saturday I rode out to the Walbran Valley of Caramanah Walbran Provincial park, way out past Port Renfrew. Really awesome old growth forest down there, I believe some of the protests in the 90's were situated there(I was like 5 or 6 so I dunno), and at least 3 little camp sites right along the road. I went in the Cowichan way, longer but the road is much nicer, and returned via Port Renfrew, shorter but rougher roads and loose inclines. The last bit down into the valley is a bit rougher too. Spent an hour or so hiking, but one of the trails said it was like a 6 hour round trip so didn't check that one out. Just got to be aware that it's pretty remote out there, no cell reception past Cowichan or Sooke as I am sure you know.

      I can’t complain living on the island. Even the rain can be nice an cleansing. I used to cycle year-round in Calgary, and a lot in Ontario so I know what winter commuting is all about. If I ever move back to somewhere with real winters, I’ll be first in line for a fat bike & a good smart trainer too.

      Drivetrain was nice. On my last day my bike feel over posing for a photo and I tweaked my derailleur hanger. Tolerance for clean shifting is very narrow. I could not get it adjusted to shift well, until I swapped out with my spare hanger.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the compliments. I quite like the wheels/hubs. I have about 6000km on them, and I’ve been pretty hard on them. Light mountain biking, loaded rough roads, winter commuting, narrow rubber, wide rubber. Still perfectly true, and no hub issues at all. They’ve been through the wringer. Be mindful you will need a few various thickness of spacers for the back of your cassette depending on what you run.

    I'm working on gathering my layers for warmth and keeping dry, and the last piece of the puzzle I'm down to is something to keep my legs warm (have rain pants). What are you using for tights?

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this video I just had my old set of Castelli tights. I had chamois liner shorts on under, then the Castelli's tights, and MTB shorts over. For more casual tours, I use chamois liner shorts, casual shorts over, and leg warmers. Usually that's good for me. At night, I'll strip everything off, and wear just my casual shorts, and if it's cold, toss on thermal bottoms on under.

    Hey Salty? On these trails, do you ever encounter dangerous wild animals? And if you do, how do you deal with them? Because I see myself screaming in the hope that they will run away.

    • @SaltyBeard_Adventures
      @SaltyBeard_Adventures  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, but I sing… so I know they will run away screaming. LOL. I actually had a close encounter with bear cub and mama bear on my last trip, but my acting correctly she didn’t take me as a threat and eventually moved along.

      @@dennisnjuguna1047 I guess it all depends on your exposure to wild animals in your region. I grew up hiking and working in the bush, so certain wildlife encounters (if dealt with correctly) are generally not that bad. I could say the same from where you are.. I would be scared of big things that wander around at night too.... only because I've never around such wildlife.

For me I've grown up near the city. An encounter with a wild animal would be life changing I think. Bt seems you have nerves of steel. Maybe with more exposure I could emulate you.

      @@dennisnjuguna1047 That's very similar to here, many city people who don't venture into the "woods" very often and are not informed enough to deal with wildlife encounters, or do things that can attract wildlife.... ie) bears can smell food from a long ways away, and will come seek out the smell. If you startle a mother bear (sow) with cubs, you have to know how to react and no appear to be a threat. All this is part of educating people with good information.
