    Thank you Topher! Long time fan of your channel :) Your series from the Si to the Type R convinced me to trade my 22 civic sport hatch for a 24 FL5! Best decision I've ever made and the only cars I've ever fallen this hard for are triple if not quadruple the price range. Keep up the awesome videos! Good call on the octane bump. In the WRX world, a lot of folks use the 91 OTS tune and still fill with 93, since the quality of 93 varies so much. Car looks fun! I feel like I have Gingerman memorized at this point lol

    • @maximus9401
      @maximus9401 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I used to do the same in my WRX but realized that in the Midwest we get some ethanol content in our fuel. So I figured that help keep knock down enough to run the full 93. Besides the OTS tunes are built with that safety buffer anyway. They're pretty conservative. A custom full send tune, I can understand the hesitation

    • @MEEKLO333
      @MEEKLO333 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I keep it at 91 tune and use 94 most of the time. Accessport def detects less knock this way in my 2014 wrx hatch.

    • @joby602
      @joby602 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@maximus9401 The ethanol content is taken account of in the fuel's rated octane rating. I don't think it adds anything extra.

    • @maximus9401
      @maximus9401 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @joby602 how can that be? Even the gas stations don't know how much ethanol is in there. It's always saying may contain up to 10% ethanol. I doubt they'd take into account the ethanol to create the octane rating. It varies too much

    I suggest doing a datalog with it and check all of the important parameters, if you haven't. If the OTS maps are anything like the Subaru maps, they have the potential to blow the engine over time, since they aren't designed for your exact car, just general parameters. It may be different for a stock car vs having mods, though. That may also just be a Subaru thing, since their tunes need to be perfect for else they risk being blown because Subaru.

      Agree, its OTS and not a true custom tune taking in elevation and fuel. Would check AFRs and fuel trims to see if the car is happy.

      Same thing with mazdaspeed 3s, made a pretty big difference once I switched to a tailor made e tune instead; better throttle response, power, and less knock.

  • @ChrisIam-007
    @ChrisIam-007 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    @TheTopher I know that others have commented on this too, and I’m curious if you’ve answered anyone as I haven't seen your response.
    I’ve owned two previous turbo four-cylinder cars (a VA WRX & a Fiesta ST) that Cobb supported via the access port. I utilized a Cobb access port on both of those cars.
    Cobb does a very nice job for street use, but for track duty you will want a custom tune. Cobb tunes are created to operate “within a safe range”, but for how you are driving on track I wouldn’t trust an OTS map that is pushing additional boost and timing while being at WOT and higher rpm's for extended periods of time.
    I’m positive that an OTS tune file is safe enough for street use but perhaps work with your preferred tuner sooner than later for something that is more custom to utilize on track. I’ve seen on my previously mentioned cars via data logs that the AFR's can vary widely with some troubling knock readings when going WOT in higher rpms on a Cobb OTS tune file. I'm not tuner but seeing the knock events and AFR variances when pushing hard was enough to make me seek a professional tune.
    At least verify if you haven't already that the OTS tune is safe with some datalogging. That would make an interesting episode showing what your 93 octane OTS tune is doing while on track!

    • @TheTopher
      @TheTopher  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's a good point, I was thinking about getting a custom tune before next season, even if it's just to gain a bit more power. The initial data log I ran looked great, but that was with just a couple hard pulls to redline, not extended track driving.

    Knowing there isn’t a true dedicated oil temp sensor, but an algorithm that considers load and many other factors to determine a theoretical temp, do you have any further concerns with the extra power/tune?

    I've never had a tuneable car before and now have a 23 wrx, I am of course always considering the cobb ap. It doesn't seem like these power bumps on an otherwise stock car are really that likely to cause mechanical issues and I don't understand why cars like the vb wrx aren't more aggressively tuned from subaru? Am I missing how this could possibly be adding that much sketchiness to a stockish type r or wrx?

    • @mikefawcett5596
      @mikefawcett5596 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I bought a 2015 wrx base new, and got the AP and a MAP performance OTS 93 tune at around 10k miles. I live in PA, so its easy to find 93 and thats all I've ever used. Now I have about 107k miles and the car runs great. Really scoots especially 1st gear.

    • @williamrori1274
      @williamrori1274 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To comment on this, it was relevant because I was co-driving his Type R that day so there were bound to be a lot of comparisons. From a driving dynamics perspective, the Type R is something special and has tons of advantages over the Elantra N. It's sharper, it communicates better, brake feel is better (more on that in a sec), and has more mechanical grip due to the dual axis front strut as opposed to the Elantra's Macpherson strut. With similar mods, I'd guess it's about a second quicker at Gingerman all things being equal. That being said, this video focuses on driving dynamics, when there's obviously much more to a vehicle than just that. While the CTR is a better vehicle dynamically it also has some large shortcomings - Complete lack of engine/exhaust sound, no heated seats in a nearly 50K car, in order to not literally melt the brakes on track you have to do an absolutely laughable pedal dance (since it uses the brakes to assist in turn-in etc.), my brother and I could not get android auto to work properly on either of our phones, and some more. So pick your poison, they are both excellent cars.
