  • From THE ANXIETY MD, www.theanxietymd.com -Often in treating anxiety, we doctors go after the mind, but what if a bigger source of the problem lies in the stored energy of alarm in the body? This video discusses the 3 step process that leads to anxiety relief in healing anxiety by identifying and releasing the alarm that is trapped in the body. This video links to an article in Elephant Journal that can be seen here

    Mine is always in my stomach, then if I don't address it it spreads into my chest and then I get hot flashes. Breathing helps tremendously. I have also "named" my alarm Momo. I say "okay Momo, settle down." That makes me laugh. I am a therapist as well.

    This video is now 5 years old and I wish I saw it back then! I'm 60 this year and had a dysfunctional upbringing and a messed up adult life, and even though things are ok now, I still live with chronic anxiety. I've had several counselling sessions, read books, had hypnotherapy, watched videos, exercised, meditated, etc... and nothing stopped my racing thoughts and anxiety. After watching this video I have felt it's shone a light on where no where else has... the focus on the alarm in the body. It's true.. my mind has shut up since I turn the attention to the alarm and now I intend to make peace and be friends with it. Thank you so much, you can be proud to know you've really helped. ❤

    Dr. Kennedy is exactly right and this actually works. I have been able to seriously dial down my anxiety using this method. I've struggled with anxiety for a long time and was in therapy with multiple doctors for years. Every doctor told me that anxiety was brought on by my negative thinking even though I told them that it started in my body first. I would be just fine and all of a sudden the anxiety would come up from my chest and begin to expand outward into the rest of my body. This feeling of "gloom and doom" would trigger negative thoughts and only exacerbate the physical feelings in my body which would start the downward spiral. Finally - someone who actually gets it. Thank you!!!

      I am so glad to know that more and more professionals of conventional therapy finally open door to the alternative therapy, as you never can heal the body without healing your soul. The energy medicine has an answer for example.. There are several essential energy systems in our body, that never been properly studied, like cardiovascular, nervous or other systems that operate as one, controlling all. Bioenergetic points, meridians...lots of techniques to reach your body to know where your life flow was blocked and what to do to open it again.
      You can try to do the Tapping therapy- like knocking on the door of your body, reaching the soul .
      Everything is in there, all the answers...

    I delt with severe anxiety from a PDS situation. I had never experienced anything like it before. Only when I stopped running from the anxiety feeling, and actually "met" the anxiety in my body, and started "talking" to it dealing with it as "someone" and when I stopped being afraid of it. Then it finally left my body. This is exactly what dr Kennedy is describing.

    Pro tip: sometimes we mistake excitement for anxiety due to the same somatic result-cortisol release. It took me a while to understand that feeling in the pit of my stomach, anticipating "fun" experiences, was NOT anxiety, but anticipatory excitement! Helped me to see/enjoy the few people living that I genuinely Love, instead of isolating/ avoiding. It has been another WIN from the knowledge of the mind/body anxiety connection:)

    « The alarm feeling in the body is what keeps the anxious thoughts of the mind going. » Lightbulb. So many of my anxious thoughts suddenly made sense to me. With eyes closed I went to the painful sensation, mostly in my belly. I tried to breathe there. I realized suffering had been there for a long time. Tears. My belly was white light. I could breathe again. I hope each one of you too. Thank you Dr Kennedy, thank you.

    Never heard anxiety explained in this way. Thank you. When I realized my 'alarm' is always my 'racing heart', which then causes stomach upset and panic attacks, I concentrated on just slowing down my heart rate.... and almost feeling sorry for my own heart... and it hit me! This is also a form of self-love, which I have difficulty with .... and difficulty even typing that! I was an abused child and am now 60 years old... still suffering from anxiety. Thanks for your unique therapy... and thanks for helping others.

    I absolutely agree. I have suffered with low/medium repetitive level trauma (not one major traumatic experience) since childhood. From my early 30’s spent a lot of money and time on talking therapy which did little to actually show me how to live with the feelings and emotions I felt about myself on a day to day basis. I’m 67 now and only in the last year or so has the ‘light bulb’ come on..

    I recently bought a big plush red heart pillow at target. I've been hugging it once day thinking of my inner child at different ages, hugging her, giving her what she needed and didn't get then. One disagreement with this video, my extreme anxiety isn't worry, it's grief. But truly accepting situations and allowing myself to rest or shut down as long as needed either renews me usually after couple few days or allows thought process to fuel new solution or idea to situation. Very helpful stuff here though.

It is that little sharp pain in my chest then my shoulders tense up and maybe my arm or hand starts to tingle. Then my mind starts to think all these crazy things and the body gets worse . It’s definitely in the body. I forgot that when I Lear ed to sit with that feeling and stop fighting g it that it would go away. So glad I ran across this video because it reminded me of what I already know that I’ve just forgotten and let my mind take over. Thank you!

    This is what Claire Weekes is all about. ACCEPT your anxious feelings, images, thoughts and sensations (false alarms) and the anxiety will disappear. Easier yet, Recognize the sensations, Accept them, Dismiss your false alarms as noise and the you will be free of your anxiety. With time and practice the process will become automatic, stick with it!

    • @dexio8601
      @dexio8601 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah Claire's method was, Face..Accept...Float...Let time pass to deal with anxiety and severely sensitized nerves that have been sensitized by the adrenaline rushes you have given your body through fear and fear on fear or 2nd fear, I'm shocked no anxiety video I've watched today has even mentioned your adrenaline releasing nerves...
      Face- as in don't run when your anxiety comes on
      Accept- you must accept the anxiety 100%, accept as in don't complain about it at all, that part is hard to do but is key
      Float- when the symptoms hit, you float or sag yout body through it, instead of tensing up you do the opposite and try to relax and float through it, even though the symptoms may be super annoying
      Let time pass - this just suggests that by practising the above, your sensitized nerves will desensitize over time, and the length of time may vary for everyone, it can take months or even years, but you will get there...good luck. 😊

So I would assume I had to fix the original thought to fix the sensations, but it wasn't the thought that was really causing the ongoing problem. This is the most accurate description of anxiety manifestation! After many years, I started to notice what u're saying; I was paying attention as to where is this thing starting in my body...Few years ago I was told by a doctor that anxiety actually starts somewhere in the belly, around navel but didn't care than much back then. But now, after a stressful time, anxiety started to rumble again, and was able to access the 'source' of it; when felt this anxiety at it's best, started massaging the area left and right; then started belly breathing for a few seconds; after 1 minute or 2, the anxiety dissipated completely. I said to myself "whuuuuuttt!??!" was that all? Is this real? But, yes it's real. Of course, mind is also entangled in this story, but just as an echo of that sound in the body, and yes, can keep the alarm on and on with catastrophic thinking and all the stuff out there we know from CBT therapy. I can confirm that anxiety does not always starts in the mind! There are times when I do have anxious thoughts but they just don't bother me; I mean, same anxious thoughts.

    I agree! You can't fix mental stress with more thinking.
    I've tried since I was in 10th grade and had my first panic attack.
    I've been in therapy off and on for over 20 years and know so much about psychology and have loads of tools. No mental tools help when you're having a panic attack because your frontal lobes are all off grid.
    The body is the 1st to respond and key to regulation. Knowing this and being able to do it is totally different. I'm struggling so bad with agoraphobia now. I've lost my will to live from being so hopeless and stressed all the time. It's a cruel existence. 💔

    I was in and out of foster care, sexually, mentally and physically abused all through my adolescent years. I have been suffering from extreme panic attacks and anxiety since I was a young teen until now... I would associate my alarms with my health or thinking that I was actually having a heart attack, I have gotten myself so worked up to the point of fainting I ended up in the ICU a couple times. it was so bad after covid I finally got on antidepressants only to realize they weren't actually helping me at all... Anxiety always seemed to me like this mystery disorder that know one could really give us answers to. After watching this video it made me think that maybe our reactive thoughts of the alarm are what complicate it and turning it into a even scarier experience. I love how simple this technique is. In life, most things are very simple but never easy. I truly believe the answers are within all of us and everyones trauma is unique to them so by being aware of that inner Alarm/ Unconscious Trauma, having compassion for it almost treating it like a ally rather then a enemy you can work with it and cure the Anxiety/ Panic Attacks. Thank you for helping me understand this tonight Dr. Kennedy. ❤❤

      @@infomercialguy honestyly, i surrender to it, treat it with compassion I find that now that i understand its my bodies way of getting my attention i remind my body that it is safe and that it doesnt have to send me alarm signals but i still thank it anyway and im patient with it i do the same with the negative thoughts that follow, and that seems to keep them under control for the most part, I no longer take any medication for my anxiety instead i work through my emotions by journaling, talk therapy and meditation. i also feel better when im eating healthy, working out and managing daily stressor’s. also, never do anything that goes against your heart if something is no longer serving you listen to your feelings and let it go despite what might work for others may not work for you... might sound cliché but, always listen to your heart everything we are seeking is already within us...

    This is truly remarkable! Simple when you really think about it - everything you say makes total sense - and yet so many of us have been looking at this all wrong! I certainly have. I agree with others on here who have said that for some people the body reacts first and the alarm goes off but is most of the time ignored as the thoughts sync up and take over. I think alot of self development comes down to compassion, self-love and acceptance. I have tried to "fight" my anxiety and ignore my trauma for many years and it always comes back and takes over. My inner child needs to be understood and loved fiercely. Until now I've never given my body the respect and care it needs to address the physical effects of anxiety and fear. Today I isolated my alarm for the first time in my life, mine is in the centre of my chest/rib cage, a tightness in my sternum and vice on my chest. Your video fills me with so much hope and comfort. I wish everyone out there all the best on your anxiety journeys, we can do this. Love always. Thank you Dr Kennedy!

    100% spot on and factual. The negative emotions or unhealed trauma is stored in the body since the mind becomes the body. Building a relationship and loving the trigger causes a softening of the emotions and actually causing a detoxification process from all the stress chemicals that is continually pumped into the body, which then keep the continuity of the perpetual loop of stress chemicals going between the body and the brain. Essentially it requires a complete physical detox before the anxiety levels will drop since the feedback loop and strength of the impulse loops between the body and the brain will start to diminish, leading to a calmer more emotionally stable individual.

    Thank you so much! This is the exact thing I needed to hear. I always tell myself when I feel that alarm that I just want it to go away, and using the analogy of a small child crying for comfort and pushing it away - omg, I of course would never do that! This is absolutely coming from my childhood, and why would I tell it to go away? I needed the love then and became so hard wired to not receive it, I do the same to myself with the thoughts and meaningless distractions, which never make it better, always worse. Lately I'm becoming better at self nurturing, self soothing and identifying the areas and sensations within my body that require extra love and attention, without judgment. And when I do, I begin to feel better. Also, the dancing, the yoga, yes! This all just resonated with me so well, and I thank you for presenting it in this manner that makes perfect sense to me! Not "out there" at all. Thank you, thank you so very much, doctor!! 🙏❤🙏❤

    Every anxiety expert has their own pet ways, their own things that have (finally) worked for them. And so that is what they want to share with the world. And all the techniques and approaches DO seem to work for some of the people some of the time. I have come to believe though (after decades of struggling) that there are actually different types of "anxiety" and different stages of anxiety, and each one responds best to a particular type of treatment. No one path into anxiety, and no one path out of it. And here is yet another approach.
    Years of therapy and years of mindbody work and years of qigong and years of exploring trauma, anxiety conferences, work with an anxiety expert, etc etc etc has not really worked for me (other than helping me get through another day, which is actually no small feat so I'm not dissing that) - so what have I got to lose? I will try this, too. So far so good. It is an hour or two into this and I would say I have had a little success with this already. Promising. I will see how it goes today and explore your other videos. Thank you, Dr Kennedy. I hope that I become as successful as you, with this approach.

However, anxiety symptoms distract me and keep me in a cycle of fear. I tried ignoring my symptoms , talking to my brain, telling it I'm okay and didn't need it to save me, laughing at it, I take supplements to avoid having to take the horrific anxiety drugs psychiatrist prescribed. My nights are like horror shows. Anxiety keeps me awake with symptoms and panic attacks. I have been going through this for 4 months , and it frightens me to read that some people have been going through it for years. I'm older, and I don't have the time to spend fighting this demon.

    very interesting! I am currently reading your Anxiety Rx book too x i am a HSP/empath and was a sensitive child, anxiety started young but didnt affect my life too much until midlife. My anxiety is mostly health anxiety and I get a lot of palpitations (been checked) that I just csn’t lose my fear if, I always say if I didnt have palps I wouldn’t have anxiety, I don’t trust my body or feel safe in it because it has sent me so many weird and scary symptoms over the years so I can totally resonate with this idea of alarm in the body. Chronic anxiety and other life stresses has now led to CFS but I think this is caused by a dysregulated ANS from years of worry and anxiety x really hoping your book helps me, I also recognise elements of Claire Weekes in your work x thank you

    • @seffie4363
      @seffie4363 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @IN NA well cfs is the same but the book isnt really for cfs its just that my anxiety contributed to having a dysregulated nervous system which is what can be the roit cause of cfs. As i’m still reading the book i havent learned the practices yet however, just having a better understanding has helped and i do feel my anxiety in certain situations is better. For example i always felt that in some situations my body would suddenly have anxiety symptoms-overbreathing, palpitations, tight chest etc even though i didnt have anxious thoughts, it would just take off and i would then try to usemy mind to calm down which never really worked. He explains this in the book and the idea is that you cant think your way out of a feeling problem. No-one has ever explained this to me before and i always felt it was because if my thinking that i had anxiety but its alarm held in the body. Understanding this helps but his methods will hopefully help release and change this alarm response which is basically just your body trying to protect you.

      @@timmy6588 hi Timmy well i havent really used this book as i havent finished it yet but mostly use the TMS approach which is by Dr John Sarno, too difficult to explain here but good info on youtube. I think alot of people niw use somatic therapies in order to help regulate the nervous system and the key is teaching your limbic system (primitive brain-anygdala) that you’re safe so that it gets you out of sympathetic activation. I think that as long as we fear anxiety symptoms then the limbic brain senses danger and sends symptoms to warn/protect us but if we fully accept these and dont worry etc then it sends the message back that we’re ok and it can turn the alarm off. i also think you have to take a good look at all aspects of your life and see if there are things going on that coukd contribute to a hypersensitive nerv system and then address these. good luck 👍

    • @seffie4363
      @seffie4363 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timmy6588 Sorry but its too complex for me to explain in a reply here. If you’re asking about TMS then the person who keeps it simple is Dan Buglio Pain Free You on youtube but like i said just replace pain with whatever symptom you’re dealing with. He explains how to use TMS in a simple practical way. Alternatively, the best advice for anxiety that I came across was Claire Weekes books-bit old fashioned language but way ahead of her time. There is also an anxiety programme called DARE which is an updated version of Claire Weekes work, I think theres a book and an app you can use. Basically with anxiety you need to reprogramme your brain by teaching it that you are safe etc as it only sends symptoms because it believes you’re in danger and its trying to warn/protect you but the primitive limbic brain needs to be ‘shown’ that its safe, it doesnt communicate in words, so telling your brain you’re fine while holding your body tensely for example wont send a message to the limbic brain that you are ok. Thats why a lot of talking therapies for anxiety only go so far and where somatic therapies and techniques come in. I hope that helps explain it better. Good luck

    I definitely notice the cycle now that the sensations in my body have worsened, and even changed. Before when I was stressed out I d feel tense in one spot, near the diaphragm. When my anxiety started getting worse, it felt like my diaphragm was super tense, like locking. Since it’s gotten way worse (triggered by some event) it depends, it can be in diaphragm or chest, and tense or palpitations. So, at this point, I assume that one needs to address the alarm wherever it happens to manifest itself, is that right?

By the time my anxiety hits my brains higher functions fail. I loose the ability to talk and even remember the words i want to say. I tend to also suffer from paralysis i am stuck were i am until is is almost over. There is no getting used to it. I have tried to get comfortable with the feeling but it does not go away.

      I wonder if there was a time where you experienced intense fear causing you to freeze and being unable to get away (hence the feeling of paralysis). The body may be repeating the same pattern when triggers arise. Apologies if this was not the case. But the work of Peter Levine speaks to this kind of bodily response to trauma. All the best.

      They key is to accept it 100% and try to not make it go away, by accepting it the fear of it lessens, and with this so does the adrenaline surges, and over time your adrenaline releasing nerves will desensitize....

    Yes, did feel a little woo woo but the main message is having compassion to yourself.

    The alarm feeling I’ve had for the past 3 insane years, and then got fired for not taking a forced medical treatment, and now permanent alarm. Lost a senior role, forced to sell our home. Am still trying to get over the shock and find a way to move forward.

      I absolutely understand what you’re saying. Shock is a perfect word. You’re not alone and now how to get unalarmed when insanity is all around.

    Eat carbs! I did Keto for 3 months (during a torn meniscus injury & gout) properly & went through hell with anxiety & panic attacks (putting it lightly). Pulse was a 100 at rest. Now 75-85. Lost 18lbs. Put 2lbs back on after 3 days of complex carb eating. I'll find another way to rid my body of inflammation (exercise). Keto is NaoT for everybody. Hope this helps someone.

      Interesting, I've had the opposite reaction. On carbs I had way more anxiety, and worse panic attacks. Going carnivore has greatly diminished my ptsd symptoms.

      charming! I've been dealing with this alarm for three years now, but I haven't pinpointed its location. I liked the word alarm, because that's exactly how I feel. Thank you. 🙏🏼

      Dr. Kennedy, you are a tremendous blessing to me. I'm 60 years old and have been struggling with this Alarm vs Mind issue for the past 3 years. It hit me right after I had a heart ablation procedure but I'm so tired of trying to explain my issue to others as they look at me like I'm nuts. Honestly I've always felt it was a stomach vs a brain thing but they worked hand in hand. I'm going to overcome this Alarm thing come heck or high-water. I feel confident that once I've treated the Alarm, my anxious Mind will heal. I firmly believe this and have the faith needed to accomplish/overcome this obstacle in my life. It can and will be done. Seriously, you're amazing and a God given gift to me. Thank you, Tim T
