I tend to gravitate toward classic video games from the 80's and 90's. They are easy to pick up and play, and the controls are fairly simple (usually 2 or 3 buttons). I can easily stop playing after 5 minutes if I need to do something else, or if I really have some free time, a lot of these games can be beaten in under an hour. They are non-addictive to me, and they also give me a dose of nostalgia, reminding me of fun times in my childhood and the people that I used to play games with.

    • @dakabaka4912

Exactly. I believe games that are short and skill based, [card games, board games, arcade games], are easy to pickup and put down. Progression games are the traps one should avoid.

This is a great way to look at it! Unless it is your job, it shouldn't feel like a job or have the aspects of a job. Those are good signs that it is taking too high if a priority in your life. I experienced they same thing with Apex Legends, a fun and relaxing game with friends at first, but a desperate grind for levels once you buy the season pass. So much of the industry wants your time and money for all the wrong reasons and with little pay off.

I’ve heard the same sentiment expressed about MMOs like World of Warcraft. The competition to get those coveted top spots as a World First raider are so insidious that people start to hate themselves for succumbing to a grind. Even going out of their way to blame the cash shop, the boosting, the greed, or the scandal found in everyone else but themselves, it leaves one wanting to avoid the heartache entirely because it leaves you feeling like the gambler is in all of us.

I've played games with massive time sucks. They definitely become jobs. Planning, modding, grinding. Its just not fun. There's always something to want and you start taking pride in something so menial. I've since dropped those sort of games for simpler games. [Card games, board games, arcade games, etc] I find games that rely on your abilities, rather than measures of progression are better. Chess gives you all the pieces, its up to you to win the match. Its short, thought provoking, and fun. All the better.

I think as I’ve gotten older I’m kinda starting to go through a midlife crisis at 23 lol, and I’ve realized how much time I’ve wasted on games, specifically Overwatch and fps games like it. It definitely is like an addiction, I go off it for a time but I get so bored and get “cravings” to redownload it, so I waste time on it again.
Perhaps, and God-willing someday I’ll look back at this comment when I’ve overcome those addictions and have spent my time getting closer to God and becoming financially successful and I’ll laugh.

He missed what I've heard many speak of which is recreation is when we unite closely to the state of God who never has need of work or toil, all his creation is recreation, the artist participates in this gift when he created but also when we play games. All rightly ordered games will build some form of character and natural virtue and in many cases it requires the complete exhaustion of effort and sport tests the character of man. Games and sport I believe are not quite the same thing. But great homily.

This was a great sermon. At one time I signed up for online risk to try and improve my skills at the real risk game. In hindsight that was taking such a trivial thing way too seriously to begin with. The online version was designed to be so addictive that it enslaved me. I ended up not sleeping or eating for three days. I know that is an extreme case, but some fall victim to these things more easily than others. I remember playing one level and telling myself I just needed to finish this last one before sleeping. But then, maybe as an inspiration from my guardian angel, I had the question of what would completing this level accomplish in both spiritual and temporal matters. The answer was absolutely nothing. I laughed at my weakness, turned off my computer and went to sleep. Strangely enough I had no desire to play the game after that for the longest time. But then suddenly, months later, I had a desperate feeling that I needed to try it again. Gratefully, attending daily Mass and praying the rosary prevented me from not living life while trying it a second time, but I still spent way too long at it. Eventually, I had the same question and stopped cold turkey again. Basically, I can't play those games because I can't seem to stop. I have to recognize my own weakness. But I also agree with Father that if a game is designed to be addictive then it is probably immoral to partake at all.

    • @dakabaka4912

I get ya. I think I've played like 8000+ hours in video games across my childhood. I was allowed to essentially play all day, every day. Its... not fun. It very much becomes an addiction [I think the proper word is dependence], and its sort of the medium I lived my life through. Its the "freedom", gameplay loops, the ease of play, and the "perceived" social connection which makes it so pulling. It was a good way to ignore my problems. It starts out wholesome, but quickly becomes all consuming. The priest hit the nail on the head.
After hearing sermons from good priests, and in light of my own condition, I finally deleted all the games on my computer. I deleted all my gaming accounts, meaning I can't retrieve the many games I purchased over the years. I'm done and I have to say, I feel GREAT. I don't feel compulsed anymore and I can take or leave any fun activity.

I find it extremely difficult to quit playing not because I'm addicted but because I've made so many good friends. So last year I just started limiting myself. Quit playing for lent, decreased playtime from the entire day to 1-2 hours. Eventually, I know I will quit but I'm just enjoying the little bit I have left. Playing video games will become impossible once I have a job and God willing a wife and plenty of kids. I've replaced playtime with more prayer, reading theological books, and striving for sainthood; God bless.

A very reasonable homily. I would have loved him to touch on tabletop role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons but I believe the principles stated here could be easily translated for use in this favorite past time (since 1974).

    • @stompingjester1926

I am not sure about other tabletop games, however, growing up my (evangelical at the time, but I hope to fully convert to catholicism) well meaning, family would always warn against dungeons and dragons, from some sort of story of a group of children getting possessed and becoming very violent from playing it, and we never bought the game or even seen it. We also bought yu gi oh cards and our mother made us rip them up and throw them away, due to the summoning parts of the show and self explanatory dark magician girl (with pentagram in its design!) I'm not saying all tabletop games are bad, pokemon and monopoly can be quite fun with family and friends, its just I'd be wary of media/entertainment and do research on it beforehand before deciding if they seem to go against our faith. I've had to let go of tv shows and games due to younger me not noticing blasphemous nature/false gods in them/or just for the fact it takes too much time consumption or its too addicting!
For example me and my siblings had a chance to go to a voice actor's meet-up at a comic book store only for us to do research and find out he showed aggression towards the fact another voice actor co worker would proudly profess he was evangelical, and he also had a severely big ego and a God complex. We felt like we dodged a bullet then.

Point-and-click adventure games can be great tools for practicing other languages, but it is difficult to find ones that do not have objectionable content. "Silence" "Syberia" and "FoxTail" are the closest I could find for practicing languages (Polish, German, Ukrainian). "Monkey Island" very well done, but promotes magic potions and Voodoo, which is definitely dangerous.

If he dreams of going to the olympics and does what it takes to get there, is that sinful? (the hard work is certainly not fun). He seems similar to an artist perfecting a craft. • @christinemako7714
      @christinemako7714 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Hello, I can address your issue. Like all games, if this game leads you away from God or is disordered, or immoral in any way, then it is. In other ways, if you are more attached to games/movies than things pertaining to God, then you are -in a way- worshipping them. All things are supposed to lead you to God, so if you are everything about Games, so obsessed about it that you do not have time for prayer or good works, then that’s when it becomes sinful because it is leading away from God, instead of closer. I know video games are fun, even Blessed Carlo Acutis engaged in it a bit too much sometimes -but repented obviously. Here’s a hint: Imagine Our Lord beside you when you play those games, would you want him to be there? The yes or no as the answer will help you figure out if those games should actually be played. The main point is that your games should not lead you to sin either by too much engagement, immorality, violence, distraction away from God, etc. I hope this could help. 😀😀

In relation to other athletes however it is still beneficial to compare the virtues of different trainings and see how they hold up against the training styles of your competition. Analyzing your own natural gifts or lack thereof and developing a strategy to be pitted up against your adversaries is a good typology of the spiritual life. The world , the flesh, and the Devil are always at work to undermine our spiritual success. That’s why St Paul writes we must “run as to win the race”. Prudence should lead one to develop our resilience using the graces from the sacraments to build virtue on virtue until they reach the perfection of charity.

Meh, judgement may be individual, but the "communion of saints" is still a thing. Our progress towards preparing for our individual judgement very much takes place in the context of other people. I'd argue that healthy competition (for those whose temperament disposes them to be competitive) is a very useful tool to that end. Competition is a form of learning through imitation, which for some people is the primary way they get good at things.

I'd actually argue that it would be a disorder for men to not have some area of competition in his life. Iron sharpens iron.

@Samuel Barry how can there ever be a ‘fair match’ between two men? Each man is fundamentally different and possesses a fundamentally different body and mind. And not to mention having good days and bad days. So every match is a handicap match.

@@Michael-vf2mw competing to better yourself is great. As long as the competitors understand they are only really competing against themselves.
