The Catholic Viewpoint on Men and Women

  • In the 80s and 90s, Americans responded to the disparity between men and women in the workplace with a simple solution: make women more like men.
In direct response, Pope (Saint) John Paul II identified and proclaimed what he called "the feminine genius"-all of the particular ways in which women are a gift to the world, and the "piece of humanity" we'd be losing if we asked them to "be more like men."
Lisa Cotter, acclaimed author of Reveal the Gift: Living the Feminine Genius (ascensionpress...) is here to give us the big picture on the Catholic Church's teaching on men and women.
Stick around and find out if there's a "masculine genius" as well! Bobby Angel sure hopes so... 🤞

Thanks for making this! I've been wondering a lot about what defines masculinity and femininity recently. I've found it really hard! They are both clearly recognisable but when ppl try to describe them they're often reduced to stereotypes that make ppl feel insecure for stuff that is just part of their personality and are clearly not imperfections or sin. This was helpful! Thanks! I think its an extremely important topic given the rise of gender dysmorphia

Thank you for creating this video. It sparked a thought that here in 2023, imagine you are a 10 or 15 year old boy. What has that young man seen expressed in the public square, in movies, TV or music that outwardly celebrates boyhood? Just about nothing but lots about toxic manhood, lots of content on women can do everything men can do, women's marches, etc. Today's boy hears very little if anything from the world around him that tells him he has unique GOOD things to bring to society and culture. Both have unique gifts and are complimentary. When boys hear women can do everything men can do just as well, be careful. That young man hears "you bring nothing unique to the world" and that brings despair, meaningless, fear of expressing "the protector" . You can't even hold the door for a woman without risking scorn and an attitude of "I can do that myself". Celebrate the complimentary nature God gave us and while also allowing individuals to share or cross over responsibilities as they cooperatively choose.

I suffer from lupus, and heart disease. I’m now waitressing but not making nearly enough to get by. I’m a single mom, my husband is with God. My children are autistic and non verbal, I’m overwhelmed because they demand so much from me. I recently started homeschooling them because they were having so many issues in school. I’m tired of struggling every month. I’m striving to afford the tools I need to homeschool my children but I’m falling short. But I trust in you Jesus even as I struggle providing groceries for my family I’m ashamed. I feel like a failure. Jesus hear my prayers. Prayers are all I need. Thank you Lord! I know you will provide! Faith over fear!

I want to be charitable and understand there were some good ideas shared in the video (e.g. trying to understand the opposite gender better so we can better serve each other). However, there is also so much muddying of the waters in modern discourse surrounding the nature of gender that this video seemed to fall right into, as well. The video started out talking about complementarity and the need for women to NOT act like men, but then descended into so much talk about how we shouldn't be pigeonholed into gender stereotypes and how women can do all kinds of things that are traditionally thought of as masculine. Again, I realize they are trying to be nuanced, but in reality, this kind of nuance doesn't work in light of the teleological moral order.
I fear the world is so disordered right now because of all the drastic changes we made through the feminization of the world and we are timid to teach was is plainly obvious from natural law, the Bible, and historical Church teaching. Just look at how many women work full-time away from the home while the kids are in daycare (taking on man's role to provide while failing to fulfill the maternal role by having day care raise their children), how late people get married (close to 30) and how few kids we have (less than 2 per family), how many violent sports women play (e.g. boxing, mma, wresteling, etc.), the utter fear we have to talk about man's authority in marriage, or the lack of clear teaching of the marital debt with the conjugal union.
The world is so disordered! These gender dysphoric examples above are all things that stem from feminism's agendas and the inability to teach the clear teleological roles of the human person for men and women and what the Bible and the Church taught so clearly for all of human history until the 1970s.
For an example of clear teaching on just one of these topics, here are a sample of Church teaching on the dangers of women trying to be men and working away from the family:
Dear Newlyweds. by Pope Pius XII (1939-1944)
"Is it not an ageless truth-a truth rooted in the very physical conditions of a woman's life, an inexorable truth proclaimed not only by the experience of distant centuries but also of those more recent in our era of consuming industrialization, of seeking for vindication, of competitive sport-that the woman makes the home and takes care of it and that the man can never replace her in this? This is the mission which nature and her union with man has imposed upon her for the good of society itself. Entice her away, lure her far from her family with one of those many attractions that vie to overcome and conquer, and you will see the woman leave her family hearth untended. Without this fire, the atmosphere of the home grows cold. For all practical purposes the home will cease to exist and will be transformed into a precarious refuge of a few hours. The center of daily life will move elsewhere for the husband, for herself, and for the children."
Dear Newlyweds. by Pope Pius XII (1939-1944)
"Present living conditions resulting from today's economic and social status, due to the custom in the professions, arts and crafts of accepting men and women in workshops, offices and various employments, tend to engender and introduce on a practical scale a broad parity between the activities of a woman and those of a man, so that husbands and wives very often find themselves in a situation that almost approaches equality. Frequently a husband and wife practice similar professions and contribute an almost equal amount to the family budget through personal effort. Yet because of this same work they come to lead lives quite independent from each other.
Meanwhile, how are the children whom God sends them to be cared for, protected, educated, and instructed? You see them-we would not say abandoned-but very frequently entrusted to strange hands from their first years, formed and guided more by others than by their own mother who is far away from them practicing her profession. Is it any wonder that the sense of family authority begins to weaken and, as it loses hold, gradually disappears entirely, since the father's control and the mother's care are inadequate to create a happy and loving family life?"
Rerum Novarum, published on May 15, 1891:
Women, again, are not suited for certain occupations; a woman is by nature fitted for home-work, and it is that which is best adapted at once to preserve her modesty and to promote the good bringing up of children and the well-being of the family.
    Quadragesimo Anno, promulgated in 1931:
In the first place, the worker must be paid a wage sufficient to support him and his family.[46] That the rest of the family should also contribute to the common support, according to the capacity of each, is certainly right, as can be observed especially in the families of farmers, but also in the families of many craftsmen and small shopkeepers. But to abuse the years of childhood and the limited strength of women is grossly wrong. Mothers, concentrating on household duties, should work primarily in the home or in its immediate vicinity. It is an intolerable abuse, and to be abolished at all cost, for mothers on account of the father’s low wage to be forced to engage in gainful occupations outside the home to the neglect of their proper cares and duties, especially the training of children.
    Casti Cannubii
...social, inasmuch as the wife being freed from the cares of children and family, should, to the neglect of these, be able to follow her own bent and devote herself to business and even public affairs; finally economic, whereby the woman even without the knowledge and against the wish of her husband may be at liberty to conduct and administer her own affairs, giving her attention chiefly to these rather than to children, husband and family.
    75. This, however, is not the true emancipation of woman, nor that rational and exalted liberty which belongs to the noble office of a Christian woman and wife; it is rather the debasing of the womanly character and the dignity of motherhood, and indeed of the whole family, as a result of which the husband suffers the loss of his wife, the children of their mother, and the home and the whole family of an ever watchful guardian. More than this, this false liberty and unnatural equality with the husband is to the detriment of the woman herself, for if the woman descends from her truly regal throne to which she has been raised within the walls of the home by means of the Gospel, she will soon be reduced to the old state of slavery (if not in appearance, certainly in reality) and become as amongst the pagans the mere instrument of man.
Divini Redemptoris, published by Pope Pius XI in March 1937:
Communism is particularly characterized by the rejection of any link that binds woman to the family and the home, and her emancipation is proclaimed as a basic principle. She is withdrawn from the family and the care of her children, to be thrust instead into public life and collective production under the same conditions as man. The care of home and children then devolves upon the collectivity. Finally, the right of education is denied to parents, for it is conceived as the exclusive prerogative of the community, in whose name and by whose mandate alone parents may exercise this right.
    LABOREM EXERCENS 1981
It will redound to the credit of society to make it possible for a mother-without inhibiting her freedom, without psychological or practical discrimination, and without penalizing her as compared with other women-to devote herself to taking care of her children and educating them in accordance with their needs, which vary with age. Having to abandon these tasks in order to take up paid work outside the home is wrong from the point of view of the good of society and of the family when it contradicts or hinders these primary goals of the mission of a mother26.
    LABOREM EXERCENS 1981
But it is fitting that they should be able to fulfil their tasks in accordance with their own nature, without being discriminated against and without being excluded from jobs for which they are capable, but also without lack of respect for their family aspirations and for their specific role in contributing, together with men, to the good of society. The true advancement of women requires that labour should be structured in such a way that women do not have to pay for their advancement by abandoning what is specific to them and at the expense of the family, in which women as mothers have an irreplaceable role.
JPII's FAMILIARIS CONSORTIO (note the distinction between working women and wives/mothers):
While it must be recognized that women have the same right as men to perform various public functions, society must be structured in such a way that wives and mothers are not in practice compelled to work outside the home, and that their families can live and prosper in a dignified way even when they themselves devote their full time to their own family.
Furthermore, the mentality which honors women more for their work outside the home than for their work within the family must be overcome. This requires that men should truly esteem and love women with total respect for their personal dignity, and that society should create and develop conditions favoring work in the home.

I am reminded about how our culture is rapidly turning into ancient Sparta in how it views women. Women in Sparta were more or less viewed as “defective men”. They had the liberties associated with men, but they were expected to dress like men, act like men, and make up for the lack of fighting strength with labor, as opposed to Athens where they were viewed as destined homemakers and men as scholars. This includes recognizing and affirming the different expressions of masculinity and femininity that may exist in individuals, regardless of their biological sex.

People say men don't take their responsibilities, are selfish and uncaring, and from almost every men I see around it is true, they buy what they want, their wife makes more money, they don't take care of the kids and their wife. People say it is the church's fault if men are like that, (big misogynistic babies)?.
How do we respond to something like that, how do we prove that the church never stood up for that?
My point of view was to say men and women have their faults and they both should be better, and we should not all put it all on men because women could become entitled.

Its call the fight or flight response,( lizard part of the brain) and every animal has this from human to insects. But really though, if the objective is survival for everyone, maybe the best plan of action would be to gather all the kids, exit the house undetected, and call the police from a neighbor’s house? And if that’s a woman thing, then maybe women would just make better COs than men, because that’s some brilliant military strategy right there. Hopefully you do have time to get right with God though if you haven’t already. It might also be a good idea to sleep with a weapon nearby you’re not going to accidentally injure yourself or somebody else with. Depending on how large your house is though, you might still have time to get out even if they’re already inside. Thanks for this. Honestly the catholic church understanding of the gender binary is really refreshing compared to what I was taught.
I think a lot of the confusion around gender now days comes from the fact we are are taught its in a "box" it has a stereotype. And it's performative to the point of being a label/aesthetic.
And if you don't fit that strict stereotype then your neither male or female.
This hyperfeminine and hypermasculine that's so rampant in my generation is so toxic.

Random thought. Does it weird anybody else out or wonder what would have happened if while Jesus was preaching, He told the people about automobiles, jets, computers, and cellphones...

    • @dylangtech
      @dylangtech ปีที่แล้ว +8

The preaching would probably be very similar.
That’s the thing. Even if the Jewish customs have been lost or replaced, Mary, Joseph, and Jesus would still have still existed much the same, but with their lifestyles being more akin to the time. Poor widows still exist. Feuding and wars still exist. Tyrants still exist. Drugs, brothers, gambling, corruption still exists. Christ would have found himself executed much the same way.
That’s what must be realized. His message is timeless, but God chose Abraham to prepare the way, and the Son incarnated to the children of Abraham at that time and place to save us.
It would probably frighten the people to be told the future. God gave us Free Will, but does not wish to tell us of a future on this world. Though there have been prophets who tell of machines and their consequences. Some not divinely inspired but rather understand the tech of their time creating problems

I’ve thought of this too. My answer is that if we lived 400 years ago, we would be saying “what if God told everyone in the Bible about cannons, large ships, muskets, medicine, etc. we would look at that now and go “this is such basic technology.” The same thing will be the case in 400 years from now. Truth is, God doesn’t care about our technology, as our works are rags before Him. He cares about our conversion, and that is what is written for. Technology us cool to us, but not to God, who looks at our technology and scoffs at how we think we have power

The Romans turned our SPIRITUAL MOTHER into a male. She is the HOLY SPIRIT. The Greeks called her SOPHIA,which means WISDOM. Jesus was CONCEIVE by the HOLY SPIRIT as expressed in the Nicene Creed.

Mary and joseph look no further.
The fact that is not the center point of this video is the effect of modernisation of the Catholic church and that trickles down to this channel.
Great points made, yet this being a Catholic channel this is really lacks Catholic tradition, and the Catholic religion. Mega church vibes.

Man was made in the image of God, while the woman was made from the rib of man. That means her place is next to a man and she serves her man as the man serves God, Amen 🙏🏻.

Both were made in God’s image.
And God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Gen 1:26-27 clarifies that the Hebrew term adam stands for the generic species of humanity which is composed of men and women
Don’t let your own bias and limited understanding corrupt God’s word.

The Catholic “viewpoint” has been dead wrong many times in the past and is still dead wrong about some things. Not to worry, though, the Holy Spirit will guide us Catholics - and the official teachings of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church - to all Truth, eventually ❤
