Thank you so much for this channel. I have only ever been given practical advice like this, in person, by a priest, once. Everybody seems to laugh at the mere mention of mortification.

@@newlin83 For some people, giving up coffee or Facebook is much harder than eating only one meal a day, so we shouldn't make fun of such sacrifices. Only Our Lord knows. Have a blessed Lent 🌺

Thank you SO MUCH for such a clear and simple (not easy, but simple) way to follow to do perhaps the most difficult thing: give up vice and grow in virtue. It is truly illuminating. THANK YOU.

A lot of times, I will deliberately practice patience in the grocery store. I just decide to be calm and relaxed while waiting for someone else to finish something or to move. Often, the person I'm waiting for seems surprised I am not the least bit upset with them.
We really need more patience in the world.

I burst out laughing when he said “get in the longest line at the store” because if I see a long line I am like “nope just put that milk back we don’t need milk that bad” and I will leave. Haha guess that was a calling to me to knock that off

    • @juliasmet6052

I have been doing this simple thing for years now. Taking the longest line at check out, almost every time. Also giving up getting upset at bad drivers in the car.
I think I am more patient with my kids. It is s fruitful method.

Forreal, though. It's great advice. We start off small and build up like working out at a gym. I'm trying to figure out a way to handle my gluttony and lust. I definitely think one way is to make social media, and any kind of media where lust gets in the way is to either stop going on social media so often (as it's awful for your mental well being anyway) or go on social media only for specific purposes, whether it's to post something or message a friend. No free scrolling. One way I think I'll deal with gluttony is either eliminate one meal out of the day or keep watch on my calorie intake. They say you should eat no more than 2,000 a day. I think I'll try to bring it lower than that to 1500-1800.

One warning wrt laughing at temptations and saying they're obvious: The Spiritual Combat teaches that sometimes the Devil will present us with weak temptations so that we may think we are something. We are nothing apart from Jesus. To Him submit every day in the morning and ask for His grace to trust in Him rather than us. Deny yourself and be weak so that He can be strong in your life. His grace is all we need for that. We need nothing else but His mercy and love. All else He has given us we return/submit to Him.

Practice meekness to conquer anger. Meekness is the opposite of anger. Its also called temperance. So, we need to practice temperance to conquer unjust anger. Food and drink sacrifices have to do with temperance, so sacrifices in this area will help with anger. Mortify yourself in food and drink to build temperance. Make a monthly sacrifice every month that you make a sacrifice of, such as this month, I will drink only water. Add in to this habit, the practice of sacrifices of fasting 3 days a week as well to build temperance. Habits are formed by repetition.

    Virtue of temperance
    DOUG MCMANAMAN
Temperance is the first virtue that perfects mans ability to act well with ones self from within ones self. For it brings order to the concupiscible appetite, and thus to the emotions of love, hate, sensible satisfaction, desire, aversion and sorrow as they bear upon a pleasant good.
Temperance is primarily about desires for the greatest pleasures, and the greatest pleasures result from the most natural operations, which are those that have as their purpose the preservation of the individual and the preservation of the species.
That is why the greatest pleasures are to be found in the consumption of food and drink and in the union of the sexes.

Nice picture of Mr. Creosote. ✔
But it's not clear what meekness is, although fasting and temperance can indirectly help any sin.
Rather, meekness is just patience from a different angle.
