Me and my husband mostly listen to the podcast whilst hobbying :-) Just came here to say that in my experience as a traditional amateur artist that the art community is very supportive, all I was ever met with in various groups was encouragement and constructive criticism no matter the skill level. Keep up the good work!
I only allow myself to listen to the podcast while I'm hobbying as a sort of reward for sitting down and doing the work....which is why I'm just getting to this episode in April of 2023
As an avid runner, this podcast actually motivates me to go running as it's the ideal length and subject matter to zone out/ listen to passively while on the back roads around my house.
18:27 reminds me of when I was at the KDM paint and take a few years back as a young lad. Totally oblivious to social cues, spent most of the time bugging Scott and John with random questions. Both were very nice about it, and definitely encouraged me as a new(er) painter. Thanks guys, hope I didn't irritate you too much :)
I had this argument with my friend the other day. Vanilla is the best flavour. An exotic, difficult to grow plant with the tastiest seedpods. In fact, it's so good and so prevalent that it's become synonymous with "basic, default, safe". But you only get this from the fact that Vanilla is the greatest. Vanilla4lyfe!
I recently lost my father to cancer five months ago. Mini painting reminds me as a child watching him assemble and paint fine scale muscle and antique cars, battle ships, war planes and the like. I got into miniature painting because of him. So, for me when I assemble my little plastic men and pick up that paint brush, it feels like home, filled with some of the best memories I've ever had with him.
Awesome episode guys. If I may add, Enthusiasm. It's all about enthusiasm in this hobby. That combined with what Jon said about people not being selfish makes this community the Greatest. I once asked for advice from my IG followers because I was painting this commission piece and being clueless of wh 40k lore I had literally no idea how to paint the base. So this random guy spent like an hour searching his books to help me find what the ground should be painted like to replicate Istvan. Crazy and Beautiful at the same time.
1:42:50 The image the popped in to my head when I heard Origami Tyranids was the most beautiful thing my minds eye has seen this year. Gorgeous printed blue red and gold foiled Japanese paper hormagaunts.. Please some one teach me how to do this.
As soon as Jon mentions Brent, Scott laughs. I love Goobertown Hobbies and anyone thats seen "Ninjons : Dry paint revival" video. The bit Jon dose with Brent, 50/50 jons editing and Brents bit to me = Scott's laugh. Im watching this on its own having a night off from my batch paint cause im too tired and too many mistakes will be made hahaha
The reason many in creation hobby might be because through creation we realize the effort and other things that go into the world and how little we all really are . Being in awe and realization of what it took to make things around us shows us what is possible.
The first time I was at my local hobby store picking out my first box of Warhammer models, a fellow hobbyist was picking out some paints and gave me some tips on how I could use them. My first model came out awful, but I'm so proud of the progress I've made in 1 1/2 years. always a pleasure to listen to you guys ramble while I paint my minis.
I worked at the GW Gurnee Mill 1999-2000. It was a good store. I got some of the best painting advice I have ever received just hanging out and chatting with the other employees and gamers around the paint table in the back.
I'm in the commute group. I used to hobby and listen but I found that id concentrate on painting so much that id realize I didn't know what you were talking about all of a sudden and have to rewind all the time. Haha
36:30 thats called Anticipation or Follow Through and those are animation terms. Most action poses that are successful are either 1/3 into an action or 2/3 into the action. if its half it looks dead if its too early it looks off. its always the peak of the action. for example: throwing a punch is either right before impact, right before the fist is thrown, or following throw the impact.
Trapped Under Plastic: The podcast where we discuss the route to suit painting a cute boot and things that shoot, all while ensuring your poop chute is clean as a flute toot.
I feel personally called out, because I was actively placing a sanitary sheet on the toilet seat, as you said people listen to this while pooping. Thank you for acknowledging the struggle.
The blacksmithing TH-cam channel you referred to is Awe Me and the series is Man at Arms: Reforged. I believed I’ve watched every single video of theirs. Fantastic craftsmanship on display.
1:26:00 get some big tents, big enough for gaming tables, set them up at a big camp site, u could play games in the tents, have fire pits to play d and d around, do it for a weekend would be awesome!! 🔥🔥🐶🥰
I got back into mini painting during the pandemic, after being stuck at home for two years I showed up to one of my FLGS with some partially Painted Blood ravens to play. There were other people there that either were getting back into the hobby after a break like me, or there were people there because they were new to the hobby entirely. It felt really nice to be in this boat with people in my community. It also felt really good that more than one person looked at my models and told me that Dawn of War got them into 40k.
01:22:50 about that: yes, location is much less important now. I live in the 3rd world, i would need to go to one of the 3 metropolises in my country to find anything hobby-related: whether it be people or models or paints. but thanks to youtube, i was able to get into the hobby and learn it on my own. still cant find people to play, but i really enjoy painting so its alright :D
I was expecting the Lilith sculpt to be so much more worse than it was based on the conversation. Obviously there is a lot going on in the mini, but I was expecting something where the intention was much more clear. I don't think it is. Where is the do not cross line in dark fantasy? i.e. "I want my evil murderous space demons to be dark, but not TOO dark."
I started with the North Texas figure club. But not a lot of sharing techniques there. But like Scott said about the GW store, very friendly staff and willing to help you, or find someone who could.
I'm definitely part of the group that listens while they workout... Also while I clean my house or build things in the garage... Ironically I never listen while I hobby haha
If the hobby goody PP's are a community, I am the guy that comes into town twice a year for yeast and copper line. Love the "podcast" guys, lets me get involved while maintaining my distance. All hail the TH-cam algorithm gods...
I get the feeling that the mini painting community has a lot of "look at this cool thing I can make and this is how I made it" rather than "this is my cool shit". adding the second half in trying to teach and show possible new tips and ways of thinking when approaching something makes all the difference.
RE: Nemesis there is a Campaign! its the "Untold Stories" books that come with the game, that allow you to play a short campaign mode. but the Games story of an individual game is certainly enough for most!
Whoa. The TH-cam ad for me at the beginning of the video was for Scott's kickstarter. (Yes, I leave ads enabled.) I initially thought it was just part of the video. I was so confused for a moment.
For me, a big community perk is that I can play with people who are just interested in having fun, and don't get too caught up on any technicalities, and are very patient with people learning the game.
Dude, I had a full on colonoscopy at 18 back when I was living in the UK, and I didn't have anyone to drive me to/ from the hospital, so I wasn't allowed to have anesthetic to avoid anything going wrong as I walked home. Not only was the procedure rather uncomfortable, I can confirm that the suction device does not work at 100% efficiency. That was not a pleasant walk home. I felt like how Danny DeVito's Penguin looked. Anyways... Back to painting.
My first time playing Warhammer was in the Gurney Mills GW store. My brother and his friend and I were being showed how to play a game of 40k with an army of Orks and an army of Space Marines (though, it was during 3rd Edition). Anyway, at one point the manager told me about a house rule where my Orks could get a bonus attack to their charge attack if we could get the whole store to yell "Waaaaagh" so loud that the security guards had to stop by to check in. It was incredible. As a 12 year old (whose mom had also dropped the 3 of us off), it was a totally captivating experience.
growing up in Australia we only played Warhammer out site, our parents weren't keen on us taking up the dinning table for hours on end so we were religated to the outdoor setting.
Scott, you weren't urinating much (if at all) because the bowel prep you were using (Miralax/Polyethylene Glycol) is an osmotic. They are designed to pull fluid into the bowel to increase the fluid content of the stool thus less free 'water' in your body to be processed by the urinary tract and sent to the bladder. Edit: Also, likely you are thinking of Internal Hemorrhoids, which can sometimes also cause blood in the stool, discomfort, etc. and can be confused for polyps without a diagnostic exam
Spill the tea means “spill the beans” or “share gossip.” The earliest version of this phrase, which appears in print in the early 1990s, was spill the T, in which the letter T stands for truth. The phrase was popularized by the TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race, and a similar use of T for truth appears in John Berendt’s 1994 bestseller Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
I always meant to get into twitch streaming, but their user interface needs a tutorial... (youtube got me being lazy, just click the 'start stream' button, super easy) I like what you said about having a community with various games being played, at my local we play bolt action fairly regularly, with plenty playing dead mans hand, malifaux, some naval games that look cool and the more common GW games. Variety is great!
I reckon a good gateway into the 40k universe that wouldn't require loads of background stuff would be a Dredd style Necromunda movie. Could easily create a contained story in that environment then if it does well you can expand from there
TUP day is a great day. Quickie community story - just a few days ago I posted on the TUP Facebook for some help with blacklining tips (I suck at it).. Got several different methods which immediately produced better results.. People were happy to chime in with what worked for them. Being a relative newb who needs help, this crew is wide open to answering those questions and the help is real.. Micron pens were a good cheat, but I'm also trying gloss varnish, ink and a cuetip for situations where a pen won't work. Instantly I had crisper black lines than I ever achieved with a brush n acrylics. Good stuff
About that controversy - I feel like I know why it is controversial but when I think about this logically - why is this so much worse than a dude carrying an axe in one hand and a decapitated head in the other? And somehow that axe dude is a perfectly fine sculpt. It's a slippery slope if we start banning stuff.
I don't know if you already do this, but it'd be really cool if you made a playlist of the 'after parties'. I want to join the patreon for the extra content, but with 20mins to watch at the end of about 40 episodes it'd be a pain in the ass to catch up with these :) perhaps chop them up into hour long pseudo podcasts called "latecomers"?
Nemesis does have a fully co-op campaign, it's contained within a graphic novel type book series which may have been an optional extra on the KS (can't remember exactly). The books are called Untold Stories and there are three so far, although one relates to the new game Nemesis: Lockdown. Personally these campaign books are my preferred way to play Nemesis, it does remove the 'betrayal' aspect, but there are interesting story choices and other fun bits that make up for it IMO. Def worth checking out if you like the basic game.
I'm a little late, but I'd like to let you know that the first thing I noticed in Henry Cavil's video was the sweater; second thing the omnipresent coffe
Scott welcome to the butt camera club. I have to go for my 3rd one next month. Every five years seems like you will forget about how much fun it is...but it is now. Also Scott I saw you at The Source a weekend or two ago, and was going to say hi but you where not getting a chance to look at stuff because you were being nice and talking to everyone so I left you alone, but wanted to say that you help inspire me to try and paint more. Also I am so glad I got to see you and not Jon.....he seems scary ;P
I heard a rumor the Big Mini Hangout is going to feature a WWE style tag team, death match where everyone is dressed like a Titan made out of paper mache. There might be a giant Vinnie V pinata full of tendies as well.
On the subject of potty and painting leaving the wet pallette on the cistern will keep it cool and reduce evaporation. Daryll is a secret scientist 😂 BTW if you had to play a historical wargame which one would it be??
...when your old enough to instantly sing along to the song reference.......then you realise nope it's because my dad was playing it every weekend during gardening time....
How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way by Stan Lee & John Buscema goes over proper action posing. It talks using the extreme/exaggerated ends of the range of motion to create powerful poses
I was a little disappointed to see Jon go so hard on Cavill's sweater and whatnot. We went from hearing stories about a community's positive aspects and ended on putting someone down rather than focusing on the shared passion. Had a bit of a "he's not a real nerd" vibe. It's likely that wasn't the intent but it's the impression I was left with. Maybe I'm misreading things because I had a long day. Thanks for all the content, keep on keeping on.
No. I felt the same way. To be honest, I subbed to Jon's patreon when it first started and I am considering cancelling now because he's so consistently ragging on things that irritate him. It's their podcast and I have no desire to censor him, but I've started to feel like this just isn't for me.
My first experiance with the community of Mini painting and gaming i was 12 years old. 23 years ago. We wore 5 guys in my class who stumbled on to WH because we played DnD. Started buying armys and painting, playing with rules we thought we knew. Reading english not having it as a first language made for a lot of fun house rules. I went to our local shop wanting to look at some new models. Orcs. And the guy working there was really in to anything GW was on me. He invited me and my friends to the local gaming club. We all thought we was going to get jumped or maby worse. The guy being a lot older and a bit scary. We went anyway. I get showed to a table with a big black metal dude with long black hair, worship me like satan t shirt and a table. I thought i now was going to be sacreficed. Did not ofc. Had a BLAST for hours. To this day i know all the people that was there and the community has just grown and i love it. Internetts has made the community just grown and it is amazing. Love you guys. Slay the gray and paint more minis :D
I feel that the sculp can be the chick comming like hell and she screeming in ecstasy and smaking out one arm. That is as likely with that expression on the model

Trapped Under Plastic: The miniature hobby podcast where you learn more about bowel movements and bathroom etiquette than actual mini painting.
I am literally a postal carrier grooving to this podcast on my route lol. Y’all are dorks. I love it

Topic of the video: How great and wholesome the hobby community can be.
Jon: *Makes fun of Henry Cavill's sweater.*

I feel this! Sometimes I'm just too TIRED to paint, and i don't want to strip a bunch of minis the next day! 😂

Lol I love how the news section just interrupts Jon's gut tidbit that he starts at 1:30:30 Scott just didn't want to hear it.

I feel personally called out, because I was actively placing a sanitary sheet on the toilet seat, as you said people listen to this while pooping.

Painting more mini's ---- very slowly. Love the podcast.
We need a Goodie-PP-Con!!
Such a small world! I wonder if we ever ran into each other.
I would be so on board for Big Mini Hangout. Nebraska native, we are starved for stuff like this.
GBR!!

Whoever starts the Jon dictionary, roots has to be an entry
Scott, you weren't urinating much (if at all) because the bowel prep you were using (Miralax/Polyethylene Glycol) is an osmotic. They are designed to pull fluid into the bowel to increase the fluid content of the stool thus less free 'water' in your body to be processed by the urinary tract and sent to the bladder. Edit: Also, likely you are thinking of Internal Hemorrhoids, which can sometimes also cause blood in the stool, discomfort, etc. and can be confused for polyps without a diagnostic exam

A friend of mine bought the box and gave me the Blade mini because he knew I liked vampires so I don't have the Moonknight mini unfortunately!

I heard a rumor the Big Mini Hangout is going to feature a WWE style tag team, death match where everyone is dressed like a Titan made out of paper mache. There might be a giant Vinnie V pinata full of tendies as well.
Scott got the “just the tiposcipy”
Commenting too early. Got the “full penny”
On the subject of potty and painting leaving the wet pallette on the cistern will keep it cool and reduce evaporation. Daryll is a secret scientist 😂
BTW if you had to play a historical wargame which one would it be??
Stu stu studioooo I don't know that mini's nameeeee but I think I'll paint it just the same stu stu studiooooo.
...when your old enough to instantly sing along to the song reference.......then you realise nope it's because my dad was playing it every weekend during gardening time....
If your group really likes Nemisis you should check out Lv427's 3d printed board.
Is it weird that I was pooping when Jon and Scott were talking about pooping? And I flushed the toilet then he said " We flush out"
Let's not forget about Superman's Arctic ice breath which just makes no sense or the stupidest power they gave him of the memory erasing kiss
Terped Urder Perstik, the podcast where you know for cheesey where they're gonna beesey
Dear Scott
Man at Arms
Fart in a jar? ....and I regularly listen to this while I eat my dinner, thanks my guys lol 🤣🤢
