At 45:45 this hit me differently today. Thanks for sharing that Scott... Definitely teared up a little.
I just left my secure and stable day job due to horrible treatment from the management for many years. I have no plan. I have a couple of threads to pursue, but I also have 4 mouths to feed depending on me.
It is hard to be kind to myself.
But this has been a wild couple of years so I guess it's getting to the point I need to.

in my experience, the hobby is only as serious as you make it. its great to take it serious, push yourself to improve, or really show what youve mastered. but its also important to have fun. i love to paint a model seriously, but i also make sure the next model i paint after a serious project is a "for fun" project. for example, a while back, i painted a "chaos space marine warp talon" in the color scheme of the original Wolverine outfit. i still look at that model months later with a feeling of true joy. its not my best painted mini, but its one of my favorites. i enjoyed it so much that im planning a "chaos space marine raptor" in the classic Batman scheme in the near future. theyre hilariously goofy concepts, evil space knights painted to resemble superheroes, but thats the point. have fun. dont limit yourself. experiment. purposefully paint something in a way that makes you laugh at it. my current "for fun" project is a pink death knight because thats hilarious. do it for the laughs every now and then. youll enjoy it.

Social Media has a huge impact. When someone looks at their feeds every day and sees 5-20 minis that look way better than their own paint jobs, it can mess with their heads in thinking they need to get way better.

I actively avoid mini painting social media accounts for this reason lol. I don't wanna see 20 other Space Marines with basecoats better than my entire finished product lol
When I get better I'll seek some out for inspiration and challenge, but right now I'm content

    That boxes thing is Fact!
My daughter and I painted the other day, I was slowing painting buttons on some DKOK grenadiers while she was carelessly slapping colors on an owlbear. Some brown, pink, blue, all wet blended. some red on the paws because he's "fierce". She even got some metallic gold for a stripe down his back. In the end I'm pretty sure she's more proud of her 5 minute paint job than I am of the hours spent on the squad of Krieg.

My partner yesterday asked me if I was having "fun" while I was painting. And the answer was "idk if it's fun, but its satisfying." I think that there is a different kind of joy in putting the work into something.

Scott, Miniacs is called this way for the same reason it is in English (Miniac+miniature aka Maniaci + Miniatura/e in Italian) so its pretty similar, i'm part of the Aos community up here in Milan and big fan, just a '' coincidence'' for the two languages overlapping on these terms :)

There's so many reasons mini painting is sooo serious these days, but in one- it's technology. We can watch tutorials and see each other's work. We can kickstart stuff we like. We have equal access to materials and minis like never before. Ok, I'm old. like seriously old. I started painting minis when I bought fricking Hero Quest in 1991. The only paints I could readily find were Testors. Not even acrylic testors, but the enamels. So, yes, kids, I had to walk to school uphill in a foot of snow both ways. A couple years later, I found a store that sold Citadel stuff and it was like a miracle happened. I'm amazed at the development of paint in that time. The grind, the saturation, the variety, and the relatively low price point is awe inspiring and easy to get.

Hey goodie peepees, I’m the father is the son who did the outro for the multi basing episode on Miniacs’ channel. Bjorn has been painting minis since he could hold a brush just about and now he’s at the point where we can play games like Deadzone and cursed city together. Anytime I feel a little burnt out or that I’m taking things too seriously; I think about how every time I ask Bjorn what he’s thinking about, he replies “Minatures”. He’s so excited and he always talks about what kind of cool minis he wants to get. I could talk for a long time about how much I enjoy sharing the hobby with him but perhaps sharing it with your kids is a topic on its own?

This topic really hit home for me. I started terrain building and painting only about 3 years ago in my early 40s to do something with my oldest son. He quit quickly and I was hooked. But have felt building pressure and insecurities of my painting abilities, mostly I think because I over the course have watched a ton of youtube painting and crafting videos. I think for sure as adults we worry too much what others will think in this day and age. My husband doesnt paint but he used to give me and my son "advice" on each item we were painting/creating and I think this is the main reason my son quit, he didn't feel he was doing a good enough job. Since then I have stopped asking my husband what he thinks. When I first started I was much more carefree and I think that was due to not watching alot of videos prior to making/painting something. I started with terrain videos and to me there are alot of videos that I wouldnt say are sub par but their content and the way they craft stuff is definately doable for a newbie. Painting I have yet to see many vidoes where I am like ya I can totally do that or do that even better.

It also is serious on "table top ready" and the want that impress others on your skills. I’m 45, I started into Warhammer about 4 years ago and took 2 years away during Covid. I ended up watching Uncle Atom, Sam Lens, Lyla Mev, Dana Howl, and Scott & John. All these guides and videos and seeing people’s minis on Instagram exposes you to the highest standard of mini painting, and sets the bar really high. Coupled with the artwork on the box art for most Games Workshop minis looks decades in advance of what I’m capable of. I’ve had to set my mind to not looking too hard at the work of others, and to only compare my current painting ability to what I was capable of a year ago, otherwise I will always feel I’m “not good enough”.

Another analogy just for Jon. WIth the gym, there are people who just mess around and aren't "serious." Their results are diminished, and probably enjoyment as well. I chart my nutrition, follow strict programming, pay for coaching, video my lifts for review, etc. My results and my NET enjoyment of the overall satisfaction and experience are far greater because of greater investment and dedication.
For my mini painting, I've recently learned different techniques (wet blending), new tools (airbrush), new mediums (oils), and minis outside GW grey. The time spent learning and "seriousness" have resulted in me enjoying the painting part of the hobby a heck of a lot more than I maybe did a decade ago.
Technology and access to learning through YT, for example, have helped in a net positive way for me, which 20 years ago we didn't have access to. Even you two jokers.

  • @SolGladio
    @SolGladio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I imagine a lot of your audience is also capitalizing on the hobby too. I'm a full-time painter and sculptor, so it stands to reason that I take it much more seriously that many hobbyists. So +1 to that point.
There's also the point that when you start out, there's so much growth so quickly that even without taking it seriously, you'll get better and better results with each model; but as you reach those plateaus, it gets harder to improve, and you end up "over thinking" everything from color selection, to ambient occlusions, etc, just to get that same high of producing a better miniature.

Perhaps a helpful term to consider in light of "seriousness" of a hobby would be "professionalization," which probably has more to do with the making money, optimization reaction to the hobby, more than just a casual enjoyment activity/past-time, which could get more "serious" while still being ultimately a casual pasttime.

I think there is so much to it that you can talk for days about it. Wich IMO you guys just put a realy great podcast .. especialy if it is not directed and scripted .
I think about one thing with this topic . First of all I am with this hobby for 8 years but on and off wich makes it trully maybe a 6 months worth of time put into painting.. anyway.. I think a lot of people start to take it as art. I think orginaly it was just craft-thing ;) Paint your army, play and dont worry to much about it. Just paint basecoat/wash/drybrush and you are good to go. Now it grows into painting amazing stuff adding new depths to it and turning it into art form so for a lot of people it become not just paint and play but paint and express yourself or try to .. probobly with help of good painters from tube etc :)

Painting with your kids is all good - but you have to commit to something first - that your kids paint their own and only they can finish their own models. I did something I regret and I’ve brought a curse upon myself: I am “helping” my kids with their models - and now I’m struggling to finish their armies rather than my own. In the meantime they’ve since given up on painting and are on to other things. So I’ve failed in that aspect. DONT paint your kids’ stuff. You might help them with maybe one or two for reference - but keep it all theirs. Don’t be Homer Simpson giving Marge a bowling ball. It’s THEIR army - LET them own it!

I am doing my best to not stress over how you "should" paint minis and just paint them how I want. I know he means well but its kinda stressful.

I am not an adult despite the fact that I'll be turning 48 on Aug 20th. I live my life with childlike wonder and amusement, despite having a mortgage. This is my life. ;) PS, serious is NOT the right word you are looking for. I believe the word is pressure. We start to place more pressure on ourselves to do better. It's just human nature once you start to become more and more embedded into anything in life, especially with the amount of our time we place into things.

I think a big reason that you didnt mention is shame. By making miniature painting "so serious", people find a way to paint toy soldiers without saying they paint toy soliders. This is compounded by price. It's much easier to say to someone "Im a painter" or "im an artist" or "I play tabletop games with my friends" rather than "I paint plastic elves". "The response comes "oh is it for something?" and you reply "no, I just like it" and they get even more confused. But making it "art" relives that awkwardness

I actually think it’ll look really cool idea!
To have a model painted for a competition that was purposely painted in a gradient, from the original gray plastic to a base coat and then blended into a completely amazing painted design!! So it shows the beginning, middle & end stages all in one model! The colours could melt from amazing details to basic gray plastic 🤘🏻
Can some one make that happen plz? 🎆

I’ve only been in the hobby of tabletop gaming/ painting for a few years, so perhaps I have not seen this happen. What I have seen, there definitely is a level of pressure put on people that are in this hobby to make sure their army is painted before playing with it. Now I don’t play or paint competitively, so I think that lowers the pressure for me personally, but for others, I could see that being a problem. Sometimes you are just happy to get your models, putting them together and getting to play a game with them.

About 8 years ago as I was painting a lot and working on deliberately improving my technique and starting to take a lot of time to paint individual models - that is getting "serious". Then I realised that I would rather paint more models at a lower standard than work on painting to a high standard. So things like my FB page for my hobby is more about separating my hobby from the rest of my life and really is about increasing the "fun" rather than for promotion and monetisation - in fact monetisation is something I'm afraid of because of the pressure that will bring with it.

Dont worry Jon, deathwish is only slightly stronger than regular coffee because it has more robusta coffee beans in its mix than normal. I think the instructions call for like twice the measurement of grounds than normal to make a brutally potent coffee. Brew it with a normal measurement an you shouldnt be at a much higher risk of heart attacks or caffiene fueled combustion than normal.

It's the hobbyist choice how simple or how complex their hobby will be. Live with what you can live with. I think you can look at it like learning to drive , at first you have all this idea and worries but after 5yrs down the line driving its all auto pilot. What we think is complex now in mini painting, just as long as you do it over and over, will be a fun memory in the future. Youll say, heck this use to be a 3hr job now its only a 10 to 15min activity.

The access to information and ability to see others output also had a huge effect to push is to do what we consider is better.

I think that this hobby became "serious" just because I wanted to become better, hence why I started an IG account to show my work and to learn, got more the "right" tools to work better. However, ever since I started this hobby, I have felt that I have always wanted to do this since I was a kid (I have been in the hobby for 2 years now) and even if I get overwhelmed with the seriousness of the hobby, I always have the childhood feeling when I hobby.

When I start the miniaturehobby arround 18 years ago (damn I'm getting old 18 years ago a lot of the goodie peopies out there were just born :D) there was nothing big like facebook or instagram. There was a few hobby forums and boards in the internet but at this time there was nearly nobody who earn serious money with the hobby.
With the beginning of the blogs the first full time painters began to share their stuff and since then the full time job hobbiests grew and grew. In my opinion we always compare with other people and THIS is the problem. Painting is a muscle like any other sport or doing too. You paint more you get better is a simple rule. I would say the most guys who show the absolutely stunning miniatures or boxarts are doing this as their MAIN JOB so they have the time a normal employee can't invest to paint. So we SHOULDN'T compare or measure us with this guys instead we should use this just as a inspiration or motivation.
And to the parent and children topic, I can't wait for the day when I maybe paint or play together with my kids tabletop games. As Jon said its completely different compare to your daily hobby buddies but at the end you do your hobby AND share time TOGETHER with your kids!
Wish you all a good start into the week :D

We drink Deathwish coffee daily. For being strong, it is also really smooth. A 12 oz cup of Deathwish has about 720mg of caffeine whereas a 12 oz can of redbull has 111mg

I want to say it can be serious if you let it be.
For instance I started to get more into painting and started to create videos last year when I was laid off. However, that could lead to being serious at filming or getting better. A quick look at Instagram can show how you 'measure up'. Or just keeping up with filming or editing.
Then again, I called myself mediocre for a reason as it is ok to be ok as long as you are happy and having fun.
So it can get serious or stressful if you let it or want it to. But then again, you could train yourself to let it go and just let the paint flow.
For me, its mental for often than not.

Great comparison to video games. The competitive nature of online games has made it so you are either a winner or a loser at your hobby. ELO becomes an obsession.
Instagram lets us do that with painting… it gets pretty serious. Serious maybe isn’t the opposite of fun but it certainly can be a barrier to fun.

    Serious... its a hobby.
control how serious your hobby is. I enjoy working out, but I don't plan on competing in an ironman, or a cross fit challenge. Which means I work out in way that meets my goals and makes me happy. I do the same thing with painting minis and models. Most of the time, I am not serious at all, not competitive with my painting. That is very satisfying and keeps me interested in the hobby. When I have a subject that I want to put more time and effort into, and that I might want to enter in a competition. Then I put in the extra work. The seriousness is always measured against my own goals.

My biggest issue is feeling like I’m lazy because I paint faster than my friends. I put real effort in but I never feel like it’s enough because they go so hard on every model in a unit.

100% There are some days where I look at a mini or unit I want to paint and I literally tell myself: "Stop being a bitch and paint the thing!"
Building yourself up matters. I want to pop off so I have to convince myself to do so. No cap.

I am curious if monetizing a hobby makes it overall more or less enjoyable. I myself find commissions less enjoyable than something I am inspired to complete for a board game, Dnd or a skirmish game.
