    Guys, this was my favourite TUP episode yet. The 4 of you had such a great vibe and it's like a bunch of mates shooting the breeze about life and mini painting. Please hook up again and do more as it was such a refreshing take to see 4 people with different approaches to the hobby as a job, and as enjoyment.

    This is easily my favorite episode of the podcast so far! This was so good! The energy was beautiful between all four of you, it was so perfect!
    Also, for the next intro titling:

    Do what you're going to do, but "non-toxic" just means that it hasn't been demonstrated to be toxic when used as expected ("used as expected" does not include "eaten"). It's not like that stuff has been tested as a food additive or anything.
    Another thing to pay attention to is that you really don't want to breathe aerosol paint -- say from an airbrush. This is especially the case with metal salt pigments (cadmium, lead white, chromium, whatever), but it's not great to be inhaling a new plastic coating for your lungs either. I mean, they might be well preserved at the end, but the same would be true if you were using formaldehyde. Unless you're aiming to be the star attraction in one of those plasticized corpse exhibitions, of course.
    All that said, the risks of hobby paints are probably pretty low (though if you take those risks and die, it's on you; I'm not the toxicologist you're looking for). But if you talk to an artist trained in an art school, I think you'll find that _none_ of them lick their brushes.
    And yes, I have licked my brushes in the past and so far have conspicuously failed to die. I would just recommend actually choosing the risks you are taking rather than taking risks without understanding what they might be.

    Fristly, fantastic episode! Scott mentioned his surprise that episodic content seems to work for other creators. I can say that I eagerly anticipate every episode of Guy's Warlord Titan series, as well as Squidmar's diorama series. I would definitely watch episodic content put out by Scott and Jon if they gave it a try. Hell, I'd watch you all paint just about anything. It doesn't have to be on a grand scale. The painting advice is you put out is great, but it's your infectious personalities that keep so many of us coming back for every vid. Just keep being you, and keep doing what you enjoy.

    This episode is amazing, it's got everything: Scott's mindful mediation, Guy's heartfelt hobby history, Luke's brother's ass, and Jon's glue filled taint. That moment at 12:05 where Scott & Luke start instantly copying Guy's gentle caress of the table is pure gold.

    I definitely need a game attached when I'm painting models. Kill team and warcry and other small skirmish games have given me a great entry point to painting several different small forces instead of all one color space marines. I have models in those forces that don't and won't ever see table time, but being painted like my other units for that game makes me feel good. Example, my Shroud Runner jetbikes and Autarch will never get played, but they look nice standing near my Rangers and Dire Avengers kill team.

  • @mikewicked.x
    @mikewicked.x 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm mostly in the same camp as Guy, I paint mostly game pieces, for gaming with.
    I didn't have a desire to paint a display model, until I did. It sounds weird, but that's pretty much how it was, the *right* model came across my feed one day, and it was as though I could see exactly how I wanted to paint it, and so I ordered the STL, printed it, and painted it, and I had a lot of fun with it.
    But that itch is scratched, and I'm happily painting gaming pieces again.
    I'm happy I painted what I painted, but I don't have the desire to paint another large scale mini again right now.
    But I won't say never, it just needs to be the right model, I guess.

    You know, PISS is a great word. Some great slang terms related to it: If something is crooked, you say it is "On the piss". "Gonna have to redo this decal, it is a bit on the piss". Or if it is raining significantly, it is "Pissing it down", if it is extra heavy though, you can say it is "Shitting it down"

    I know I'm very late to the party here (sitting painting while listening to the TUP backlog) but John said I have to comment on this so I must obey. I give zero cares if a mini has a game attached to it or not. I'm an avid PC gamer and just got back into the painting hobby. If I want to game I get on my PC. If I want to paint I look for a cool mini regardless if it has a gaming purpose around it or not.

    I have only been painting models that can be used in a game for now. I plan on following the painting masterclass from Scott's Kickstarter. I think my answer to the question would be "I like painting models with a purpose" so if I were to paint a model that isn't attached to a game I would be using that model as a platform to push myself and improve on techniques as well as learn new ones. I do like displaying my models but knowing that I can use them for something else as well and knowing that I painted them, brings some extra satisfaction.

Nowadays i find myself looking at busts and haveing a go when it takes me. I was never a good painter, but as i forced myself to get better the more i wanted to try diffrent things...only so many times i can paint a bolter without thinking " there something more?"

    Im the same: no interest in painting display pieces. With all my hobbies it’s the joy of making something useful: I love painting miniatures to use them in my D&D games, either as monsters or as (N)PCs. And equally, I love leatherworking, sewing, felting, bookbinding, and cooking, but I love all those thing because I make things that aren’t just pretty but that have a use as well. And nothing brings me more joy than hearing that something I made with love for a friend like a pair of shoes or a giant crocheted blanket eventually gets worn down because my friends use them often. Using the things I make brings me that continual feeling of satisfaction in a way that making something and just putting it in a place to look at it from time to time can not. But I can really understand that that would be very different for someone else!

  • @Ainar86
    @Ainar86 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used to be very much like Guy until my favorite game (Warzone) died and I realized I'm still having fun painting the models even knowing my chances of ever playing with them again are slim to none. These days I considered the product of my hobby the fun time I spent painting the models and the fun I have playing with painted minis. I barely get any satisfaction from display models once painted though, mainly because I'm never fully satisfied with what I've done. It's more about seeing the progress I've made as a painter when I can compare them to older stuff but on their own they have little value to me.

  • @LordScimitar
    @LordScimitar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great show, love the collaboration! I find painting fairly relaxing, I just put on music and paint. I enjoy the reward of turning a boring plastic figure into something that has more life. I paint to bring life to game pieces, so display painting isn't my calling at present. I also found double-sided tape works better than poster tack for me.

    I'm in the hobby primarily for painting and dioramas. Maybe some of the lore and black library stuff. When you work all day in front of a computer screen, sometimes you just want to focus on something not emitting blue light. Painting has always required patience and work, I always find I get into a xen like state - I don't check the internet, I'm not absorbing, I'm just putting paint onto plastic. Video games, as much as I do love them, are more for socialising with my friends or just the minute to minute feedback loops. I'd say my enjoyment is more in line with a movie, I am going into an experience somebody else has built for me. Mini painting is the reverse I suppose.
