    What worries me is that 5 series got longer than 5 meters and wider than 1,90m, which makes parking in cities and even private garages more difficult. They had to increase the dimensions of the car in order to make more space for the 1 inch bigger wheels (overall wheel diamater increased compared to the G30 line), and to make more space for batteries. Since the overall weight of the car increased, in overall bigger wheels had to be fitted since bigger wheels can handle bigger weight. Finally, overall bigger wheels (I mean the full diamater rim plus tire) provide better comfort when driving over pot holes, but this comes at the expense of the car size and available space in the interrior, where trunk space in G60 line reduced by 10 liters compared to G30 line.
    An innovative engineering solution would be to accommodate all the mentioned new requirements, but without increasing the size of the car, keeping the same size of interior. Otherwise, it looks like by the current trend, after 15 years from now, we will have upper-middle class cars with length of at least 6 meters and widht of 2,5 meters.

      I hear you - thats the must by this large battery packs right now - I hope the development will provide us with same capacity but half the weight and size. And no that's already on the outer limits of size for cars. If you cannot go down town / park you don't buy a car like his - I wouldn't. I agree, the base model with the traditional grille looks far better than the M Sport on this occasion which has too much black below the black grille. • @BinaryBlueBull
      @BinaryBlueBull ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. Since the LCI came out, I find the 3-series M-Sport to have a much, much nicer front than the base model. Looks really agressive and sporty, which fits a 3-series well but would be weird with a 5-series which is a more distinguished, civilized car. Or are you perhaps talking about non-LCI 3-series from before 2023? Because then I'm in agreement. With the LCI I just think the M-Sport package looks really, really good, except perhaps the "diffuser" on the backside, which is a bit too much for this type of car and with the LCI it also has these strange black corners pointing up on the corners of the rear bumper, which make the rear look a bit weird at times. Still find the LCI M-sport to look stunning though, even with that somewhat weird rear bumper
      Aside from that, I think the design of the current 5-series is a step back or multiple steps even. The previous model was a true masterpiece, especially the LCI. Stunningly beautiful car

    • @phileagle8432
      @phileagle8432 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BinaryBlueBull I think it’s the front design of the 3 LCI M Sport that I find a little too aggressive (especially in a lighter colour). I agree though it does crate a really sporty look! • @BinaryBlueBull
      @BinaryBlueBull ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@phileagle8432 Ah yes, I can see what you mean. They did indeed go all-in on aggression and sportiness so I can imagine it can be polarizing look, like so many BMW's these days. The 3-series has always been sporty but it always had a bit of the stateliness of the 5-series as well. That is much less with the new generation and even more so with the LCI M-sport. Also, when looked at from the side, the M-sport front bumper sticks out past the hood much more so than before, which gives it quite a pronounced.....square jaw is the best I can describe it as? I do like that but I can totally see what you're saying though about the front being too agressive. I'm a bit biased as well, because last year I bought a G20 LCI M-sport in Portimao blue, so a medium bright colour. I agree with you that it's too agressive with the really bright colours, even for me 😛 always fascinating to see how much tastes can differ between people, especially so when there's a reasoning behind it that I can understand

    • @phileagle8432
      @phileagle8432 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BinaryBlueBull I guess the designers get us all talking don’t they (let’s not even mention the new X2 for now). I bet your car looks great in Portimao blue - that is a lovely colour and I think shows off the rear quarter sloping curves on the 3 and 4 series GC really well!

    • @BinaryBlueBull
      @BinaryBlueBull ปีที่แล้ว

      @@phileagle8432 Yup, I genuinely think that is on of the reasons for BMW's eccentric design choices these last few years. Seems to me like they want to get people to feel very strongly about the designs and talk about them. That said, my reactions in the past 5 years or so have been more negative than positive. Especially the 7-series, no idea what they were trying to go for with that front design. Though, like all those weird designs of late, it does stand out. I feel like almost all their iconic cars have taken a turn for the worse in their latest iterations. M2 (front & rear), 2-series + X2 (let's not talk about it, indeed), M3 (front), M4 (front), 7-series (mostly front) and now this 5-series. Not to mention the 1-series which turned into a dime-a-dozen, FWD hatchback in stead of the only fun RWD in its class that also looks nice. I also wonder if perhaps it's the influence of the growing Chinese market and the differences in taste which is contributing to this or something. Oh well, at least we're talking about it, indeed. And I guess I can admire their boldness and willingness to break from the norm, if nothing else. And yes, I do indeed think it looks quite lovely in Portimao, I've wanted one in that colour since I first saw it more than a decade ago, precisely because of the reasons you mention. I still look over my shoulder almost every time I walk away. The only more beautiful blue that BMW has, in my opinion, is Marina Bay blue which is my absolute favourite but costs like $4000 more than Portimao. And perhaps San Marino blue, which I find on par with Portimao. Yes, I do love BMW blues, indeed. Interesting conversation, thanks!

    What I don't understand is why the car had to get soo much longer ?
    BMW claims it is because the platform needed more room for the battery.
    BUT almost all of the extra length went into the nose !
    Is the battery in the nose now ?
    The 5 series is 11 cm longer than an Mercedes E-Klasse but 10 of those extra cm went exclusively in the frontal overhang.
    Its now 94,5 cm long with the BMW but only 84,8 cm with the Mercedes.
    That means that the Mercedes not only has much better and more dynamic proportions but the new 5 series actually doesn't have more space inside despite all that growth in lengths !

    Great review, thank you!
    I am not sure if BMW is going in the right direction. The “M” badge no longer is for real M cars. Practically, you can find an M badge on anything. The M nowadays stands for [m}arketing.
    Recently, BMW has kept increasing the prices, but also taking a lot away when it comes to options and packages. For example, on the new 2024 5 Series they have eliminated multi-contour seats, the door sills are gone, the panoramic glass moonroof does not open, they eliminated the M emblem on the real M calipers, US market will not get the touch screen digital 4-zone climate control on the 5 Series, no message seats, and no Dynamic Handling Package, which included the anti-roll stabilizer, active steering, and four wheel steering.
    The issue is not just about the 5 Series, the X5 SAVs are getting short-changed for the US market, yet they are built in the US.
    Those who are new to BMW or just want the emblem, would not know the difference. But for the majority who are BMW enthusiasts and know the brand well, BMW is losing those enthesitis, which make up about 80% of the loyal clients. BMW cannot keep using supply and demand, chip shortage, or lack of manpower, etc. Look at BMW competitors like Mercedes-Benz, Range Rover, and Audi, they keep the prices competitive and certainly are not short-changing their clients with options, packages, or even standard equipment. When you look at the BMW window sticker, some of the stuff has to be standard, instead, BMW is nickel and dime and charges $100 for this, $350 for that, etc. Especially cars that are well over $100K.
    And lastly, the H&K sound system should be standard. With only 465W per channel, it is an embarrassment to Honda Accord Elite or Toyota Camry XLE, as their sound system is about 600W per channel. But, BMW charges you $875 for that crap.

    BMW totally lost the potential by using the same battery and motors from the i4.
    they could have used a much bigger battery for the i5, especially if you think about how much bigger the car is compared to the i4, and the i4 even has better range while being even "cheaper".

    • @bopist973
      @bopist973 ปีที่แล้ว

      Feels like they went "well we fit this battery already to the platform lets use it again". Maybe since NK is coming soon this won't see a (electric) LCI and is relatively short lived generation.

      People complained when BMW chose to use ICE platform for their EV:s. Now they complain that they use EV-platform for their EV:s. People always find a way to complain about BMW. The range of my Taycan is 450 to 500 km in the summer and 300 to 350 km in the winter, I have not even once felt I need more range. And I have driven multiple times from Finland to Austria.

    With the length of the new 5 series, I’m not surprised the 7 comes only as a long wheel base… if not then the 7 series would be too close in length to the 5 series. Another clever manoeuvre from a car manufacturer to increase the vehicle size even more. At least there’s an option for rear wheel steering 👍🏼
    Love the new 5 series, I’d go with the eDrive 40 or one of the petrol mild hybrids (RWD 530i). Great video as always!

    I genuinely value your detailed analysis of the ride comfort review and cabin noise. I like eDrive40 better. I wish BMW painted the lower bottom side the exact color as the body, not black. US models get fewer futures and functions than Eurpean's models. I wish four-wheel steering turns at least 5 degrees like EQE. EVs are popular in California, but every brand needs help to sell them because they are too expensive, except for Tesla.

    The good old days when BMW made beautiful cars are over! I really dont understand how this can be more beautiful , than previous model years. I have to applaud BMW for their bravery in innovation. This could be a seriously risky endeavor, taking one of their bread and butter models and presenting a radically new architecture. You can tell they thought deeply and carefully about the decision. In a way they are somewhat helping enthusiasts warm to a future where EVs and ICEs vehicles can exist on a single platform. I am personally interested in the 530i, but since I can't find many reviews I am forced to watch the EV reviews. I was a bit frustrated about it at first but then I realized it is somewhat intentional and that I could really get most of the info and visuals from the EV reviews. I know a lot of people are unhappy about the design, but personally I don't mind, I kinda like the fact that they were able to consolidate the BEV and ICE requirements into one platform that looks pretty neat. Not to mention the 530i is a shade above 4000lb, 1000lb lighter than the corresponding battery variant and just a couple hundred pounds heavier than my IS200t. Mind you the lexus is a much smaller car, with smaller wheels and tires, no AWD, or power trunk. The fact that they made a bigger, better handling car with minimal weight increase while having to account for EV models is just insane.

    I love the Grille here, not too huge, very flat and so aggressive but stately and luxurious at the same time. I hope BMW's lead designer does not change this Car much in the next 10 years - it looks like a Classic! 💯
