Sat in the drivers seat, lovely car as is my 530d but obviously this has the electronic stuff. If you work for a company that does EV via salary sacrifice you can afford a lot more car than you’d think. I’ve ordered a fully loaded i4 m50 for the same monthly cost as a base M240i - and with the i4, maintenance and insurance is included.
Not an EV fan but I watched this as it’s you mate and I enjoy your reviews. I’ve got to admit I do like this I5 and the idea of an I5 estate is very interesting. It’s got some really Gucci features and I’d say it’s fun to drive judging by your grin.
How times have changed, back in the sixties Timo Makinen had all the chrome on his Mini instruments painted with Matt black blackboard paint to stop any reflection entering the cabin on the snow covered Monte, and from Henry Liddons map reading light! now it seems manufacturers are fitting as much multi coloured lighting as possible to the cars interiors 🤔
The previous five series was the best looking car they've ever made. Now they don't make a single good looking car. Everything looks Chinese. It's really sad, as I've been a huge bummer fan my whole life. Audi have been making some nice cars lately. Fingers crossed for rs6 etron 🤞
Just had i4 35 as my company which was great. Lucky enough to have just been given i5 40 as my next car which is simply fantastic. Your right about the bongs though😂
What is with BMW designers? CLEARLY the front end is awful and the upsweep line on the lower side profile gives the front end a blocky appearance while the rear end lifts oddly.
£80-100k a pop and will be selling like hotcakes? Not sure which world you live in but it's one that maybe only 1% do! Yes, plenty of toys to play with and fun blipping the throttle on a manufacturer event day but: cost to insure? depreciation? real world battery range? Fabulous car but a Mercedes AMG E63 would cost you around the same £80k, is faster, has a much greater range, doesn't look like a jelly mould and I bet is more fun to drive.
I5 looks an impressive package. Just not getting excited by the move to electric cars. Can’t wait to hear more about your opinion of the M3 Touring. Now that is my kind of car. Next step up from my M340i Touring.
I'm liking them less and less. I don't like the way they are being pushed as so environmentally kind ...and we know that they are not, all things considered. I dont like the way they keep exploding either.
I had several M3:s before my Taycan and granted the M3 E92 was a great great car. But now after having the Taycan for 3 years I could never even think going back to ICE. No, no and no.
@@allosaurusfragilis7782all things considered they are still much more environmentally friendly than ICE (there are plenty of comparisons out there - look at Engineering Explained). They also don’t keep exploding. And if they do, for every 1 that does, 20 ICE do the same, because the figures prove that EV are 20 times less likely to catch fire than ICE. Very interesting. It's a BMW, what's not too like. Range is everything and it looks like BMW have tackled that challenge. The only issue is the price, £70K and upwards but it's too be expected.

I still dont get how a new company like tesla can deploy its own excousive charging network, and yet behemoths like bmw and others cant do the same. Amazing cars but prehistoric thinking on the infrastrucure...or maybe just lazy
Well said! China is adding over 50,000+new charging piles a month ytd. Almost as many chargers every 30days as tesla has in total! Yet the morons over here with me in the us bemoan we can't spend ANYTHING on ev infastructure. Yet we make 6x the GDP per capita as the Chinese and gave Ukraine over 150billion in the last 18months. Plus we spent like 10trillion on covid and pandemic related b.s. since early 2020 now. 😑
Great car Ped, however 75k is eye watering for a mid range executive car. They all have to get the battery price down. 70% less components in an BV, so what the price. Will stick to Tesla for the considerable future. 😊
Have just watched your i7 test drive. So this is the smaller «premium » sedan as opposed to the luxury offered by the i7. All is logical just as it always has been between the 5 and the 7-series. I prefer the front end of the i5, but still prefer the 6 cylinders on the ICE versions. Agree with you on BMW getting their electric vehicles right though, especially being careful with looks (way nicer than the brand beginning with T) and driving dynamics. Two Petrol Ped BMW videos in the same evening ! 😊 Who needs telly ? Cheers, Tom.
People should review the basic model to show how BMWs come with an exceptionally low spec. It doesn't even have adaptive cruise control which Nissan had 15 years ago and a Toyota yaris has now. If you want any modern tech you have to add a tech pack for over £2k. Seems odd that it's not standard on a car that now starts at £68k
Nice review - I hope you can turn off the "engine" sound - 5 series has always been a great mile eating beast - had various tourings for over 20 years - can't wait for next year
Love your vids always, but I do have a small complaint haha. Your piano track at the end of your vids always comes on so loud compared to everything else. Honestly, the instant the piano kicks in, I immediately close the video cuz it annoys me. First world problems of course, but maybe turn the volume down on the piano please 😁
Looks good and in estate form will be a fantastic addition to the range, but a shame BMW gave up on the lightweight construction approach they used for the i3 which is what makes them so much better to drive than most EV’s especially in i3s form. Because of that (and the average aerodynamics) you sense the real-world range will struggle.
I like the cleaner lines of this 5 Series but I still don’t think it is a looker. The best looking cars are those which you turn around and look at with pride and affection after you have locked the doors. The i5 does not fit into the drop dead gorgeous category for me. Unfortunately I suspect most cars are now “styled” to appeal to US and Chinese tastes. What was not mentioned was the exterior size of the car - which seem to follow the well trodden formula of within two generations becoming the size of the next model up in the manufacturers range. For a car with sporty pretensions I imagine the i5 is too wide to be able to thread down B roads without too much care as to vehicles coming in the opposite direction. I understand the safety issues that have led to small cars having to get bigger but cars bigger classes just seem to get bigger to accommodate the obese size of their occupants. Another worry I have is all that battery weight must reduce the nimbleness of the car. So overall I guess the i5 will be great for those long weekend runs to the South of France but is it so good for negotiating the B roads of West Sussex or the streets of Chichester?
Interestingly my new to me 2008 Volvo XC70 SE Sport D5 with a full tank shows me a range of 600 miles using good old heavy oil. So would never have range anxiety. Plus it only cost me £12k with 18,000 miles. I sold the Lexus CT200H as I am not going electric ⚡️
I need to go and take a look in the dealer, because (pedantry warning) there is something rather odd about the angle of the central armrest - seems higher at the front than the back? Otherwise, not keen. Screens overload again, those light strips look tacky and unlike in the 7, the fact it's not a continuous strip just looks odd. It will sell well of course, they always do.
Pros: attractive looks, proper dashboard and controls, build quality ( the complete opposite of Tesla!) Cons: Too expensive, will depreciate heavily, real world summer range c.280 miles, winter c.220 miles. Newish used 530d or X5 30d ( if you like SUVs) makes more sense for the next 7 years or more unless compelling reason to get an EV, e.g, company car tax.
When I bought a small EV, all I cared about was; how it looked, the drivetrain, efficiency, crash protection, servicing costs and reliability. The tech was of zero interest to me as all this fiddling with the tablet distracts the driver from concentrating on the road, and it has remained switched off apart from changing the charging rate when the car is parked.
@@PetrolPed I found the sill so wide made it hard to get in and boot space barely big enough for a small office breifcase. I have never driven one though. Fairly recently I saw and heard one being given the beans away from my local dealership. Never realised how cool it sounds. It wheelspun up the road looked real quick. Very un 120mpg like. Grown to really like the look of them too. Though as I say I haven’t driven one so if underwhelming then they are not what I was thinking they would be. I recall the lead guy on top gear raving about one saying he preffered it to the M3 of the time.

I really do like the fact that it looks like an ordinary car. I know we have to embrace technology, but is it really necessary for the car to be giving you so many instructions and you being required to read and select all those options to turn something off when driving. For me safety should come first. Bring back old switch gear and get rid of all the technology that isn't essential. Do we really need mobile offices! But congratulations to BMW. Fantastic looking car.
Sharp thumbnail. I would have lighter tan interior but not a fan of two tone style. I also find it odd there is no normal silver currently. Interested to hear more on phone integration when you get more time with it. Interested how the ICE feel too with straight six
Nice summary review of a very impressive car but £75K wow way beyond my budget, neighbour has a 3 series EV saloon and loves it but a company car, maybe now better tax breaks, might be worth doing a video of the re-emergence of company EV vehicles looking popular gain
Well done BMW for launching a car with a mix of electric and combustion power units. But I would forgo a lot of the technology for 6 cylinder diesel engine.
Nice car - the problem is the i5 40 M Sport electric version is £24,000 more than the 520i M Sport petrol version. I'd like to see them justify that… 🤔
That ‘s about the same price difference between the previous 520 and 540. The 40 has significant performance increase of the 520, which BMW has always monetized.
Another monstrously expensive saloon. Should be £40k. Diesel versions were a great deal cheaper and e version should mirror the fossile fuel version price levels.
In 2017 a new base spec 520d cost about £40k. This i5 40 is the equivalent of a 540i which was £58k in 2017. Taking inflation into account, £58k from 2017 is now £74k
drive exactly this one for 3 weeks and cannot explain the massive up grade vs my last 3 yrs old 540 d. yes, adjustment in behavior is reqired for range , but who cares really. the electronics create this upgrade. Autonomos as much as allowed today, intuitive.
Agreed They also need to have real world range doubled at least,be capable of recharging to 100% in ten minutes and not catch fire. Lithium ion is not a safe technology either.
Needs an opening sunroof!! BMW stop putting fixed roofs in you EV’s for the UK - please give us an opening sunroof for the i5 like you offer in the USA!

Don't know how most people will be able to afford one of these starting at 75k, I really don't?
If you work for a company that does EV via salary sacrifice you can afford a lot more car than you’d think. I’ve ordered a fully loaded i4 m50 for the same monthly cost as a base M240i - and with the i4, maintenance and insurance is included.
…and remember, you’re not going to the petrol pumps either so monthly costs are dramatically reduced
They paid attention in class…
95% of people have never been able to afford a new 5 series.
Not an EV fan but I watched this as it’s you mate and I enjoy your reviews. I’ve got to admit I do like this I5 and the idea of an I5 estate is very interesting. It’s got some really Gucci features and I’d say it’s fun to drive judging by your grin.
Amazed that the arm rest in the back looks quite cheap with open cup holders that your elbows will be stuck in
Really enjoying the content on the channel best of luck with everything ahead 👍👍
Much appreciated!
I prefer the look of the i3 in that nice blue
I really like bmws but there just not a option for me. Definitely a good looking car. Great review and video Sir Pete
Just had i4 35 as my company which was great. Lucky enough to have just been given i5 40 as my next car which is simply fantastic. Your right about the bongs though😂
Very nice!
What is with BMW designers? CLEARLY the front end is awful and the upsweep line on the lower side profile gives the front end a blocky appearance while the rear end lifts oddly.
Great video mate
Thanks 👍
(That’s adjusted for numbers on the road as well) suggest you check out Ped’s mate Richard from Vintage Voltage as he has a number of videos on the subject.
@@allosaurusfragilis7782they don’t keep exploding. And in the long run they are more climate friendly. Do your research. There’s more petroleum cars that blow up/ burn. Just the anti electric lobby trying to give EV’s a bad name.
As for driving experience: I have an EV and wouldn’t want to go back to petrol. Driving an EV is loads of fun. Only problem it’s still too expensive.
It costs a lot and will be worth half the price within 12 months.
A real shame Hendy don’t do BMW (AFAIK) as the i5 would make an interesting long-termer.
I like the i5 a lot and it’s really good to see another non-SUV EV. Like you I’m looking forward to the estate version.
Yeah true 👍
Is the pan roof standard?
Very interesting. It's a BMW, what's not too like. Range is everything and it looks like BMW have tackled that challenge. The only issue is the price, £70K and upwards but it's too be expected.
I like it but definitely a touring version for me because I need dog space. Also think a hybrid works better for me but would consider the all electric. 👍👍
Cheaper, better built than a tesla, but ok
Have just watched your i7 test drive. So this is the smaller «premium » sedan as opposed to the luxury offered by the i7. All is logical just as it always has been between the 5 and the 7-series. I prefer the front end of the i5, but still prefer the 6 cylinders on the ICE versions. Agree with you on BMW getting their electric vehicles right though, especially being careful with looks (way nicer than the brand beginning with T) and driving dynamics.
Two Petrol Ped BMW videos in the same evening ! 😊 Who needs telly ?
Cheers, Tom.
Great review as always.Nice car ,but £75000,that's pricey.I think most will be bought as company cars.
Artificial noise sounds like an Austin 1100 transmission
Mad to think a 5 series is a near 6 fig car (with options)
Thanks for the feedback. Great you are still watching at the end 👍
@@PetrolPed well I watch right up to the piano kicking in hahahaha . Love your content P, keep it up 😀👍
Is Chris Bangle back?
If I win the lottery this is one electric car I could go for.
The sound that the 5 series makes is pure London Underground 🚊 😅😅😅😅
When was the last time time you did 200 miles without a break?
I enjoyed watching the Video. Will be a very popular choice with Company Car Drivers 😊
Love the colour! Bit pricey? Touring should be epic!
Then you're the safest and most considerate EV driver on the road.
I don't understand the appeal of piano black plastic.
Recommend Harrys review of this sled. Harry is a man of great knowledge and he zonked this 2.4 ton very expensive beast.
Harry is a dinosaur that can’t change, in my view his reviews are like watching your grandad trying to use the remote control for the TV…..
When you accelerate, it sounds like a Jowett Jupiter Javelin from the fifties.
You mention the I3 but what about the lovely i8?
Cool looking car but I found the i8 very underwhelming to drive 😢
@@PetrolPed I found the sill so wide made it hard to get in and boot space barely big enough for a small office breifcase. I have never driven one though. Fairly recently I saw and heard one being given the beans away from my local dealership. Never realised how cool it sounds. It wheelspun up the road looked real quick. Very un 120mpg like. Grown to really like the look of them too. Though as I say I haven’t driven one so if underwhelming then they are not what I was thinking they would be. I recall the lead guy on top gear raving about one saying he preffered it to the M3 of the time.
Lovely looking car. More efficient than my i4 M Sport. And better handling from reviews. Good work BMW!
Thanks! 👍
Obviously no idea of well made cars
Hello Ped, love this, always been a close 2nd to Audi for me.
Same here!
Awesome looking car but at £105000.
What will the touring cost at launch next year
Not sure yet
May I ask for an honest opinion Stage 1 and Stage 2
Question is if you had £80k what would be your choice of car/suv for u and your wife after driving this between the BMW I5 or A Land Rover Defender or a KIA EV9 this is STAGE 1
Then Can u answer this question after December 6 after driving the EV9 class this as STAGE 2 the reason I ask this is I feel u have a very similar life style requirements as me I’d really appreciate this thanks so much
Or If u would pick something totally different for £80k I’d be keen to hear also may we ask Mrs Ped too 👍👍👍
Saw one at the dealer when I picked my i4 up yesterday. Lovely car in the flesh. Just a bit too big and pricey for my liking.
👍
What's under the bonnet? Any useful space or just badly packaged and full of electric gubbins and pipework?
Just gubbins 😜😂
Can you switch off the annoying fake sounds coming through the speakers ?
The next press guy getting the car after you will be like "what only 15 miles range leff?"
😂😂😂
Just need far more rapid chargers up and down the UK to reduce anxietyv about finding a charging ststion beyond the range of one's home address
Definitely a challenge unless you own a Tesla. I wanted to buy elsewhere but they just have that totally sorted
Trying to up my thumbnail game 😜👍
Nice summary review of a very impressive car but £75K wow way beyond my budget, neighbour has a 3 series EV saloon and loves it but a company car, maybe now better tax breaks, might be worth doing a video of the re-emergence of company EV vehicles looking popular gain
That downward slope boot lid is very E12
I never understood why BMW stopped selling the i3. What a shame.
Because it didn't make a profit....that carbon fibre cell is expensive
Also I guess it probably doesn’t meet the latest crash zone requirements.
Great car 👌
100kwh wagon and I might be interested. This seems too much like i4. With same size battery
Well done BMW for launching a car with a mix of electric and combustion power units. But I would forgo a lot of the technology for 6 cylinder diesel engine.
Nice car - the problem is the i5 40 M Sport electric version is £24,000 more than the 520i M Sport petrol version.
I'd like to see them justify that… 🤔
Makes sense to not just look at the base price but compare the cars when optioned out.
Taking inflation into account, £58k from 2017 is now £74k
plugin hybrid -> yes. fully electric -> no.
Not a fan at all of the new 5series. It looks bloated and not like a BMW. Great review though, as always
Thanks! 👍
drive exactly this one for 3 weeks and cannot explain the massive up grade vs my last 3 yrs old 540 d. yes, adjustment in behavior is reqired for range , but who cares really. the electronics create this upgrade. Autonomos as much as allowed today, intuitive.
Great to hear 👍
Have had 3 x 530d, just took delivery of 550e, bit apprehensive at first but its an awesome car, starting to like it a lot!
Touring version should be good and more useful than an SUV !
That car would be good as a hatch back
Who in the right mind would pay £74k for that? Mindblowing. Until they make electric cars for less than an ICE, nobody with any common sense would.
Agreed They also need to have real world range doubled at least,be capable of recharging to 100% in ten minutes and not catch fire. Lithium ion is not a safe technology either.
I just did. No idea why they still offer ICE versions. For boomers ?
@@francoispermentier7353 I wish I had your cash, Francois.
Needs an opening sunroof!! BMW stop putting fixed roofs in you EV’s for the UK - please give us an opening sunroof for the i5 like you offer in the USA!
