Regarding the separate glass opening of the trunk. I have the current 3-series touring and that opening actually gives me much more usable space. So it is at this moment the most important thing you can do to make car interiors more sustainable. Also, if you turn the argument around to "meat is the waste of the leather industry" you realize that it doesn't make sense (and is ethically doubtful) to discuss the primary use of individual body parts of mammals. I have to agree with Thomas here. When animal skins are processed with chemicals to make leather it is no longer so biodegradable. And when animals are used for food it is using so much resources for land, water and fertilizer for feed that could go directly to humans, it is not so sustainable either. Also there are the ethical problems with using animals.
@@autogefuehl Leather will always last longer than any synthetic product we can make. Current best synthetic leathers maybe match the lowest possible grade of leather,. That's why it took so long to get synthetic leather steering wheels and even then they are already peeling before warranty expires. Real leather is also an indicator for quality, because synthetic leather ranges from absolute trash to decent and you cannot tell which is which, especially if the manufacturer doesn't state which they use.
There are shit qualities and great qualities like with every product. Just because u find bad leatherette on Tesla Steering wheels and old Taxis doesn’t mean that there are no better materials. Modern high grade leatherette exceeds all animal leather in all aspects
Aside from our different opinion on synthetic versus natural animal skins you are by far the absolute best in thoroughly reviewing a car from its ergonomics the appreciation for quality aspects to the performance and the drivability of the car your reviewing. Attention to detail and appreciation for quality are your unique qualities which avails to the viewers of your channel a comprehensive snapshot of the car that one maybe considering to purchase. There isn’t a minute in your reviews that isn’t filled with pertinent information that one could never obtain from a dealership. Great job!
I highly appreciate that! If you have the time at some point, visit a BMW dealer and ask for a X5, X7, 5-Series or 7-Series with Sensafin/Veganza and take a seat and feel it. I m pretty sure you ll change your mind too :)
I love touring... And this one is gorgeous. I think BMW do a great job in EV. This car is a beast, the 60-100km/h is absolutely insane in the video...and great reaction from Léa for the Hazard light 👍
Finally wagon time. And cool to see it in red 🔥 My favorite i5 spec.. But. It's such a shame that the battery are on the small side. Totally agree with you that the battery should be at around 100kWh.
BMW lights, dash and grill always used to be classic. For the dash they never went semi digital, keeping a neat two round dial set up. Now they have weird angled dials with asymmetrical lengths before each angle. Their lights are peculiar and worst of all the have multiple crazy grill versions and bland body shapes.
Thanks Thomas for the good review. Agree on the comment about range as we cover great distances in Australia. Electric cars are also heavy and we did not discuss the weight…
Solar cell roof and solar cell hood would be more useful than panoramic glass that can kill you if the car flips. Especially on the long body touring version. That would mean 10km for free per day at summer spring time.
Whenever I want to to catch up on German brand vehicles latest models your are my gonto channel! Your videos are top notch and your name comes to mind when I think German cars! My heart is with BMW, but I also love Mercedes Benz and Audis. Love German cars.
Looks way better than sedan but what they have in mind in BMW right now?! Ability to open that window in the trunk is one of the great things that I love in my f31 lci. Also for me BMW is a car brand for great long rides, but in i5 this is problematic.
I could live with the integrated A/C controls and having to wipe fingerprints off the screen, but that "grille" is just super fugly. Not enough bling for my liking and too much Schwarz 😵💫
Not getting comfort seats in my previous generation 5 series was a huge mistake and it sounds like the option seats are again well worth it on the new 5’s.
@@yissibiiyte I found the adaptive suspension worth it but 20" wheel option on the G30 5 Series would have lead to more damage to the tires and wheels due to the roads and also give a relatively harsh ride compared to the 19"s
@@szneka12 It's also complete and utter BS. Look at for e.g. the second hand prices of 2 year old Porsche Taycans; obviously there will be a significant hit in percentage from the new price, but that's the same for any type of car at any price segment. Not to mention the fact that an EV inherently has much fewer parts that needs regular and costly maintenance, the only reason they currently may drop second hand value in parity with ICE cars is because of rapid technology improvements, causing even fairly recent EVs to compare poorly to new ones.
Isnt it easier to just turn the wheel 1 cm for a lane change instead of all this? What if I just look at something in the landscape then? Does it start changing lanes?
The length of the 5 Series now is ridiculous and I suspect it's been done to be able to store sufficient batteries. In the UK I'd have a 520D like my previous car, but they don't offer any diesels here now. Not impressed with the latest idrive it seems like too much is having to be done on the screen.
As usual with Thomas, it's an excellent test, and I appreciate the current generation of the 5 Series that it exists as an electric car in Kombi versions, finally!!! Finally a normal body (even if the design is debatable, as I see BMW still hasn't overcome the design identity crisis, despite the fact that it seemed to be the case after the F10 and G30 generations, but that's not so important) finally an electric car that is not an SUV or a weird pseudo-futuristic aerodynamic oddity that's impossible to look at.
Sorry, Thomas, but why do you say that the car will somehow have 100 kms more range at over 20C versus 12-13C? The heater will not have that much of an impact and there is nothing else that could cause a range drop between over 20C and 12C. That’s not how electric car batteries work.
German EV 😂 You guys have no idea how to make EVs good with affordable price. Just borrow BSA assembly from Korea (or China) and put your logos on it. (Merc. VW group decided to do so.) That's the best way you guys can do for the coming era of electric vehicle.
Rear looks nice, side/front resembles Mazda. BMW looked more timeless and iconic before. Also €125k, lol 👀 even if I had the money I’d rather go for a decent used 2020 BMW over this.
Those touch controls in the cockpit are really not a step in the right direction. Even the hazard light button is #capacitivebs! I can just imagine coming to a sudden stop in traffic, trying to warn the people behind and instead turning on the defroster…
I find it interesting they call an electric car Touring’ you can’t go touring in an electric vehicle, go to the shops or to work and back but not touring!!
Great review Thomas. I am always impressed by BMWs animal free quality options. BMW really needs to reconsider where it sells the Kombi/Estate/Station wagon. In some markets things have changed, people are more into family and travel so it would sell better now than when bmw pulled out.
The touring somehow looks better than the sedan from the front. Idk why because it has the same hideous headlights, maybe it's because of the whole shape of the car that helps the proportions. But I still hate those headlights that make it look like a asian knock off brand.
the most decisive sentence; I would not buy a car that can drive only 400 km- Just wondering, is that when you are testing the acceleration and breaking? do you feel that is a realistic usage of the car over time? SInce it is the touring version, how would a full boot affect the range?
I just want a new bmw wagon bigger than my old 3 series, and like my former 5 series. Six cylinder and wonderful driver. Is it too much to ask for in the US? I hate SUV’s.
I would never go for electric version but rather diesel ( 520d). I generally don't like electric cars due to many disadvantages. I never understand why they put so many horse powers in electric cars when the Km range is already low. I drive the previous generation of 5 series (G30) and I confirm that the comfort seats are the best seats.
Great review again, despite that utopia about shite artificial materials made out of refinery crap etc. Thomas, grow up, please. Your reviews are perfect apart from that.

Great review, and the Lea meter really is useful. BMW seem to have arrived at a UI/UX which is a usable blend of software and physical controls. Apart from the speed and suspension the bit which caught me unawares was the sophistication of the Level 2 automatic driving. A touring/combi is not the form of car I really want. I am really after something full EV which will replace my last Audi RS3. On range of this EV my take is that 250 miles is quite enough. I hate to let an ICE get much below half full and that transfers over to EVs, where I think little and often recharging really works. On a long journey I would want a break well before getting to 250 miles anyway. BTW would you get in to the habit of commenting on whether an EV can do vehicle to grid? The price of this is clearly absurd at €125k but presumably you are happy to pay the premium for the badge.
Where are: - glass opening of the trunk - massaging seats - passenger seat memory - soft close - air suspension - leather dashboard - trunk / cargo package (rails etc) Remember when car manufacturers showed us new features each new generation had? Well yeah those days are long gone, we pay more for less functionality and are expected to buy heated seats subscription - BMW and whole car market is a joke
BMW is getting more and more uggly! I used to love BMW cars, but the new ones are looking not so great. That being said, the previous generation 5 series are looking amazing. Not sure, what happened with BMW to switch and accept this uggly fron face design.
@@aysbgMy new E450 4Matic with full air suspension, 4-wheel steering, and 20 inch wheels has a much more sophisticated interior than the 5 series. The super screen is a gimmick, though - I chose open pore maple with aluminum strips on the dash and console.
I am an existing BMW customer and I can't stand the weak recuperation in D. They had good recuperation in the i3 and it was always on. And it was perfect. This BS with the B mode on the shift that all germans are doing now, is just idiotic!
All the marketing in the world should not be able to cover this fiasco modell... a cost savings car, G31 was really loved, this one, one many German forums, Insta and so on is really criticized, but perhaps for Asia and US is fine.
400 km is actually a decent range for a 120km/h speed. More or less the same as Model 3 Long Range real world result. And if i5 is like other BMWs it's pretty much the same with 140km/h. If someone needs 500 kms - it's a what? 5-10 minutes of charging? Really, the range issue is overrated.

In a high animal skin grade, the animals are specifically raised for this matter. However even if meat is the "first" misuse case, the hide remains a profitable body part. That means: If manufacturers put animal leather in a car and you demand it as a customer, you give your money to an industry that earns money by oppressing humans, animals and harms the environment, you make them more profitable. Alternatively, you could support industries with your wallet which try to improve the sustainability of materials.
Not true. Most expensive „leather“ is used for yachts because it doesn’t rot in salt water.
The tail lights are better than the sedan version that it s a premiere 😮
Finally wagon time. And cool to see it in red 🔥 My favorite i5 spec.. But. It's such a shame that the battery are on the small side. Totally agree with you that the battery should be at around 100kWh.
What premiums is that if you cannot get many options that you could get in g30? Eg. Massage seats.
120 grand used to be super car money. All it gets you now is a kombi :)
Yea it's crazy just wait 2 years it will b damn near half the price
Thanks Thomas for the good review. Agree on the comment about range as we cover great distances in Australia. Electric cars are also heavy and we did not discuss the weight…
EV-range is absolute OK in Europe.
When Leah is happy, I'm happy! ✌️
Hi, Thomas I have to admit these people from Germany did a good job the new one BMW i5
Solar cell roof and solar cell hood would be more useful than panoramic glass that can kill you if the car flips. Especially on the long body touring version. That would mean 10km for free per day at summer spring time.
Yes, but glas roofs are fun, especially when you can open them (but bmw doesn’t want du bild nice cars anymore)

4:05 no, they wanted to save money, not space. Saving space is just an afterthought by marketing to justify all the budget cuts...
Eletric Power together with Hans Zimmer should be quite unique feeling!!!
Looks way better than sedan but what they have in mind in BMW right now?! Ability to open that window in the trunk is one of the great things that I love in my f31 lci.
Also for me BMW is a car brand for great long rides, but in i5 this is problematic.
It would be so much nicer if you can hide the cup holders with a mechanism
if the front end was on a 2 series, it would make sense. This is not what a 5 series should look like
Thank you for another video starting out with the Leah meter squeal!!! Love it!!
=)
I could live with the integrated A/C controls and having to wipe fingerprints off the screen, but that "grille" is just super fugly. Not enough bling for my liking and too much Schwarz 😵💫
Not getting comfort seats in my previous generation 5 series was a huge mistake and it sounds like the option seats are again well worth it on the new 5’s.
defo
I didnt even had lumbar support in my g30 it was awful
First rule of modern cars. Don't fall for all their "sporty" options that just make the car unbearably uncomfortable.
@@yissibiiyte I found the adaptive suspension worth it but 20" wheel option on the G30 5 Series would have lead to more damage to the tires and wheels due to the roads and also give a relatively harsh ride compared to the 19"s
0:18 I thought that was part of the 'engine' sound for a second! 🤣😅
Would these rims fit on the g30/31, the previous model?
125k is a lot and after 2 years you can sell it for around 50k probably...
That's $3,150 per month of wasted money over two years or around $100 per day of wasted money. Wow.
No opening roof anymore is a very bad decision. I personally wouldn't buy it anymore because of that.
The length of the 5 Series now is ridiculous and I suspect it's been done to be able to store sufficient batteries. In the UK I'd have a 520D like my previous car, but they don't offer any diesels here now. Not impressed with the latest idrive it seems like too much is having to be done on the screen.
Waiting fo 540d review. Best choise
Great video as always.
highly appreciated !
I love station wagons but the side profile looks strange to me. I think it’s the rear quarter window.
Is there going to be the i5 xDriver40?
A panoramic roof (that opens) would been nice for this car, but anyway lovely review guys.
Sorry, Thomas, but why do you say that the car will somehow have 100 kms more range at over 20C versus 12-13C? The heater will not have that much of an impact and there is nothing else that could cause a range drop between over 20C and 12C. That’s not how electric car batteries work.
Experience. Of course they need more power for heating the battery and for cabin heating when its colder. Not specifically saying 10 vs 20 degrees
When it blows up the Leah meter, that's when you have to start considering the vehicle.
German EV 😂 You guys have no idea how to make EVs good with affordable price. Just borrow BSA assembly from Korea (or China) and put your logos on it. (Merc. VW group decided to do so.) That's the best way you guys can do for the coming era of electric vehicle.
No ones buying them, local dealerships are already reducing prices because they start with a massive price and they cant sell even with 10-15% off.
20-22% off where I live

Rear looks nice, side/front resembles Mazda. BMW looked more timeless and iconic before. Also €125k, lol 👀 even if I had the money I’d rather go for a decent used 2020 BMW over this.
Looks like a slightly jazzed up Vauxhall/Opel Astra dashboard, not very impressive for BMW.
indeed first let them sort out better range and only then we start appreciating the other qualities
Very nice car and review. Thomas and Lia are you going to lake Commo for the bmw concept 😀
thanks m8! Actually not this year because their news for this year will not really catch much attention
19:16 strange iconic sounds. 😜
Those touch controls in the cockpit are really not a step in the right direction. Even the hazard light button is #capacitivebs! I can just imagine coming to a sudden stop in traffic, trying to warn the people behind and instead turning on the defroster…
One of the only ones of current line up I love
What was BMW thinking to remove the automatic trunk cover? Its like a superb now…
Cost savings that won't be passed on to the consumer. BMW is no longer a premium brand I feel.
16:25 looks so much nicer without the black trim in the front
Thomas avoided talking the elephant in the room and focused more on accelaration and so on.
Did you even watch my verdict?
@@autogefuehl i saw your verdict. I am talking about the wierd looks of this car, which is infact the elephant in the room.
BMW much send the Touring model to the US! Same space as a SUV, but way better handing and efficiency.
We need to get 30d engine back, that would be perfect for the touring.
you all agree, grill looks amazing...
The plasticky grille gives a very cheap feeling. I saw and F10 the other day and thought it looked better than the brand new 5er.
Why does the front looks like a KIA 😢
My biggest critique on the new 5er is that it lacks the 7er seats and Bowers & Wilkins
I find it interesting they call an electric car Touring’ you can’t go touring in an electric vehicle, go to the shops or to work and back but not touring!!
how is this car over 5 meters long and have so little space in the back
Excellent review of a great car. I would personally love to have 5 series as a second car just for myself. Thanks, Thomas )
Great review Thomas. I am always impressed by BMWs animal free quality options. BMW really needs to reconsider where it sells the Kombi/Estate/Station wagon. In some markets things have changed, people are more into family and travel so it would sell better now than when bmw pulled out.
Cheers m8! Indeed
The touring somehow looks better than the sedan from the front. Idk why because it has the same hideous headlights, maybe it's because of the whole shape of the car that helps the proportions. But I still hate those headlights that make it look like a asian knock off brand.
Hmm Lia(sp?) Meter. That could be a new measure of cars!
the most decisive sentence; I would not buy a car that can drive only 400 km-
Just wondering, is that when you are testing the acceleration and breaking? do you feel that is a realistic usage of the car over time? SInce it is the touring version, how would a full boot affect the range?
As explained, our range test was zeroing after acceleration and doing 100-120 km/h on the motorway
0:20 ya know...that interior isn't getting any easier on the eyes and/or anxiety. but gosh stunning design overall.
In my opinion one of the best new estate cars 😊
I just want a new bmw wagon bigger than my old 3 series, and like my former 5 series. Six cylinder and wonderful driver. Is it too much to ask for in the US? I hate SUV’s.
I want this one😊
That shake before launch looks like fun
It's like a video game lol
I would never go for electric version but rather diesel ( 520d). I generally don't like electric cars due to many disadvantages. I never understand why they put so many horse powers in electric cars when the Km range is already low. I drive the previous generation of 5 series (G30) and I confirm that the comfort seats are the best seats.
I always use mu indicators.... since I'm a BMW Fleet Sales Advisor and needs to give the good example!!😉
Nice one 👍🏼
Great review again, despite that utopia about shite artificial materials made out of refinery crap etc. Thomas, grow up, please. Your reviews are perfect apart from that.
Thank you very much for your interest in this topic. I also bought cars with animal skin leather seats before I did my research and got to know the industry. The most important thing is: With today's modern materials, you have nothing to lose, just to gain. You achieve the same kind of luxury and comfort or even better while having the same or better durability with less impact on humans, animals and the environment.
You can use fabric/cloth, microfibre or leatherette. The classic approach is using oil/plastic as source material. Overall, a vehicle contains about 300 kg plastic. A car seat needs about 5 kg plastic. So the overall plastic share for the seats is very low and it is at this moment the most efficient way to produce a car seat. A couple of litres of fuel equals a car seat basically. So if you want to save oil/plastic, rather look at consumption for energy, fuel and heating and to other car parts than the seat. Note that animal skin leather also always contains a plastic coating for durability. However, long-term we should of course find raw oil alternatives. So going further, seats can be made from recyclables (e.g. from PET-bottles or old fishing nets) or even increased share of plant-based materials (like pine oil, canola oil or start-up materials like Pinatex from pineapple leaves or Desertex from cactus fibre or the mixed-plant-based Mirum, so be seen at th-cam.com/video/S1aNZeoatmE/w-d-xo.html). On a calculation base, by ditching animal skin leather from car interiors, the amount of emissions (CO2e) is reduced by 85 (!) % (www.press.bmwgroup.com/africa-dom-easteurope/article/detail/T0403389EN/on-the-market-from-2023:-bmw-and-mini-models-with-vegan-interiors?language=en) - and that is a very conservative calculation.
The price of this is clearly absurd at €125k but presumably you are happy to pay the premium for the badge.
thanks for the feedback !
