I have driven all three. 7 series most frequently, a couple of times the S Class and a few times the A8. 7 series has top technology, crazy shit. S Class is by far the most comfortable. A8 is the best looking inside and out, but is lacking in tech. In my opinion!
I think the S class is in a class of its own when it comes to road presence... Everytime I see an s class gliding along I'm wowed but with the A8 for example I don't really recongnise it at all...
I have never been in a BMW that actually felt luxurious. They are sport driving cars at all times. I used to drive a 99 5 series and I could literally dead ass go from 0 to 160 without hesitating. It was always aggressive.
Try sitting down in the current 7 series. I drove it already (test drove a 740d for 4 days, paid money for it bc it was a dream of mine) and it was hands down more luxurious and felt more high quality than the current S class. The only thing the S will do better is probably comfort but not by a large margin. Especially with the huge screen, the 7 is just THE current benchmark. Also, I really like that you still have some feel on the road. Even the LED bar looks like higher quality. And it's just stable at top speed. Even braking it will just stay the way you want. Try the current and the new 5 series. They are both luxurious! Even the current 3 series is the most luxurious car in its class.
In terms of comfort, s class was always and will remain the best. In terms of look, i like how the 7 series made a major change to this car. Looks like a space ship. Always loved s classes but i really like the 7 series this model u got here.
I have an S580 with a V8. The V8 comes with a mild hybrid electric motor, supercharger AND twin turbos. Its AWD and has rear wheel steering. I wish they would test that
I’m as surprised as anyone to find that given the choice I would take the BMW out of these three. I like the A8 because it feels less like it’s showing off, just a regular old saloon car that definitely doesn’t cost over £90k. I like the S Class because it almost looks like if a classic luxury car from the 60’s was made today with modern technology. I didn’t like the 7 series when I first saw it but like most new BMW designs, it’s grown on me. Definitely the most unique and futuristic of the three.
It took me few months to get used to the design of the bmw 7 and now I realized that it is amazingly successful and will be the benchmark in the future. Mercedes and Audi simply don't develop any further in terms of design. Bravo again and again to BMW!
Audi for me, I think the only thing the interior designers had on their mood board at Merc and BMW is “what would Liberace do?”. And the BMW has got a face only a mother could love.
Agreed about the BMW, however for the price the Audi was underwhelming when I was shopping. I went with the S580 V8. It's twin turbo, supercharged and electric motor and all wheel drive as well as rear steering. When you drive all the 3 it's a pretty clear winner
5:08 is another example of why touchscreen-only interfaces suck. He tapped the [-] to lower the temp or fan several times, and then he began tapping the [+] to bring it back up. Now apparently he tapped the [-] more times than is valid, leading to a popup notification that "Fan cannot be deactivated in automatic programme." Perhaps that message is useful, so you know why it won't go any lower. But due to the lag, that popup appears while he's trying to hit the [+]. In that context, it makes no sense... and it blocks his access to the [+] button. We've all experienced crap like this with various cookie and other popups on webpages... you can't reach the thing you need because there's some garbage that has popped up on top of it. This is absolutely not the kind of stupid frustration I want with a luxury car. While I generally like that BMW, they've opted to put a big fake crystal backlit bar for decoration where they could have put actual, physical climate controls. They can still have the touchscreen stuff, but please put the most frequently used and important things in physical buttons also.
Or you know you could just alternatively not press buttons like crazy for no reason... The digital climate control works great if you're not being an idiot. And the important buttons are still in the middle of the light bar, the hazard lights, front and rear windshield heater as well as the glove box are all down there separate from the digital display. Not to mention all important infotainment controls are on the steering wheel and have been for a decade now, volume control, voice control as well as switching the channel or song is all on the right side of the wheel. If you want heated seats just press the voice control button (if you have 'Hey BMW' turned off) and ask it to turn on the heated seats. If you dont mumble or slur words it'll understand you and do what you ask just as fast as pressing a physical button without having to actually let go of the wheel while driving. And the other climate controls are always on the bottom of the screen so they're just as accessible as normal physical buttons.

Great review (as always). The only issue that I have with your review is, that you have compared considerably cheaper model of Audi with BMW M Sport and the S class Merc with the rear wheel drive. Why not use the like for like comparisson, or the comparisson at the same price point. Audi S8 is closer to BMW M Sport in price, performance and the equipment levels.
I'm a Merc guy and the S-Class has been the best car in its class and in the world for decades, but I think BMW finally caught them. The new 7-series makes the Merc and esp the Audi look old. BMW hit a homerun with this.
Very interesting test Mat, as a chauffeur, I've owned a 68plate Sclass for the last 4 years, I'll be considering a replacement next summer. The boot capacity of the latest Sclass renders it completely unsuitable, the new 7 however is looking very interesting 😍😍
You say that (as I did when I first saw the design_, but it grows on you. I ended up buying the 760i and now, I can't look at the S class without thinking it was made for a woman.
As a longtime S-Class owner I would have to say I never really was swayed to not have an S-Class until the new 7 Series. One of my tenants has the new i7 with the flatscreen TV in the headrest and damn that's a nice car, I love how it looks too. I am on the fence about the new S-Class, it's just not as commanding as previous generations, not really into it. The A8 is just kind of meh to me also. I'm actually leaning towards the new full size Range Rover for my next car, my neighbor just got one and I love it.
@@JPB69420 Have you been in an S-Class before, it's silent. LOL. Also I like engine noise. Comfort, features and mostly space are main priorities, not silence. I'll never be in the market for any of these! But still, the Merc has the vital badge and that ride comfort for this end of the market. Felt the verdict mixed this BMW M with that 750 not tested. In the mid range, the 5-series, A6, E class, fine, more the toys and perf but these are luxo barges.
Fully agreed if someone feel posh and want something special Mercedes has a backup cover by Maybach for extra stuff (power, style, features even extra options like +armored) so yeah Mercedes won for me style inside-out no doubt, the new BMW exterior style i really don't like so much & white interior although is nice is very sensible for spotting dirt by back passengers.
@@poplaurentiu4148 And BMW has Rolls Royce which blows the Maybach out of the water. I sat in a new S-Class right after the Maybach and it looked the exact same but felt cheaper. Rolls Royce completely destroys the Maybach in every way though.
@@WesternRailwaysAnimation If you go base Maybach vs base Rolls Royce yes, then it does cost almost twice as much. Maybach S580 starts at 182k€, S680 with the V12 at 237k€ while the Rolls Royce Ghost starts at 317k€. However a base Maybach is actually a BASE base Maybach and has literally no options. Literally nothing. I just specced out the S680 to the max, which is what the base Ghost comes with since the only thing you can still configure on a Rolls Royce is visuals and a full S680 Maybach costs 358k€, 121k€ just in options that are included on the base Ghost. After choosing exterior and interior on the Ghost itll be slightly more expensive, probably somewhere around 370k€ ish but this is nowhere near the "twice as much" that you're talking about. The new Spectre starts at 380k€ aswell so same price category as the Maybach. And for that price the Ghost or the Spectre for that matter are much much nicer than a Maybach that looks exactly like a 180k€ Mercedes, which you just paid double for to have the bigger engine and all options so the car is actually drivable. Compared to that the new i7 M70 is a bargain considering it is essentially a Spectre coming in at 240k€ fully optioned.
I'm going with the BMW. I do love the luxury interior of the Mercedes. I've always loved how the A8 handles on the road, but I've seen the BMW on the road and it looks awesome!
The 7-series might win the test, but every day you go out to your car you have to look at that design aswell... There is some tradeoffs that isn't worth doing xD !
The Bmw is equipped with M sport Pro package, which means stiffer/ harsher ride compared to normal one, also for the Road noise/ wind noise you have to check if the car has the optional Acoustic package which costs about 2.5K...
For me it´s a bit strange an M badge on a car that should have a greater focus on confort... Big wheels and smalll sidewall tires alone arent good for confort, but that ALSO have harder suspension. I think that Mercedes is more spot on with those things, aside except for missing the rear screens.
@@hooyabaaa2I agree, stupid to have an M badge and stiffer suspension if it’s not their top of the line model. The S class only has 1 top performance model, the S63, so people buying those know they aren’t getting the best ride, but it makes 800hp. But this BMW makes no sense, stiffer suspension on a car that isn’t fast and is meant for comfort.
@@ginco_bnz The actual market are a bit ''strange'' these days, because people want ALL THEY CAN in cars that arent suposed to perform that good by simple ''physics''. You lost some confort, space and so on, but at least you can expect a good performance in a car that is a ''luxury'' GT car, not a boat that want to be ''sportier''. Why having an sport setting with vague steering?

@@ms8742still having physical buttons is a deal breaker for me.
Yep, a simply awful way of controlling things.
