I have a WJ Grand Cherokee. I was invisible to my Jeep brethren until I put on a roofrack, spotlights and AT tyres with lift. Now I get the wave most times.
I agree with your wife. Never ever get a Jeep wave when I drive my Grand Cherokee WJ, but I recently just bought a wrangler JK and when I drive that I get the waves from everybody all the time!
Had my old XJ for a lot of years now and damn near 300k miles on it now. Actually considering the new gladiator when they put out a diesel model Rubicon. Would be nice to have a good vehicle to get around and keep my XJ as a project to build since it will finally have some time to sit for a while.
Branding the parts is truly the way to be. Personalization of things today is lost, Jeep keeps its going. Jeeps waives started for me in the 1960's, it was almost a given but today there are less.

BleepinJeep just keep putting out good content the last video series is really good it’s really cool that you got to hang out with Ian Johnson I’ve always wanted to meet him never missed an episode of extreme 4 x 4 LOL
The Jeep mold was officially broken when the last TJ/LJ rolled off the line in Toledo in 2006. The TJ was the last Jeep that embodied the spirit of the Willys and was still primarily build of US steel. Anything after 2018 is an Italian version.
Aww the Jeep wave good question. I wave at any modded Jeep. As a Cherokee owner I didn't get waves until I was 6.5 inch lift on 37s. Good thing I didn't buy it for attention. My point is my respect goes to anyone trying to build their rig for the trails.
The new jeep JL and JL Rubicon seem to be awesome. Alot of new technology so still out on reliability. Had a crank position sensor go out on an XJ and that was bad enough. The real draw back to me is the price , realistically out of my price range in this life time (especially the Rubicon version)
I have a JLU Rubicon auto, so 4:10 gears. I'm running 37" Cooper STT Pro's and my JL rarely goes into 8th gear (at minimum it requires a long gentle downhill to kick into 8th). This setup is well outside the engineered engine/trans/diff torque curve and therefore not operating at engineered drivetrain max efficiencies. I would definitely regear with 37's if I wasn't changing over to 60's. There's a lot of talk about not needing to regear with the 8 speed auto, but if you do off road and need low range and do drive long distances at sustained speeds, it would be most efficient to regear, just like you would any 4x4.
I didn't know the jeep wave was a thing....just thought folks were being nice...i never initiated one but always reciprocated....and that was before I began modding my wj, installing a winch bumper tomorrow...old or new a jeep is a jeep and still one of the most mod friendly and capable offroaders on the market
I think if it's modified it deserves a wave. Or if it's an old one, like the FSJ, the old Gladiator, CJs, just because they are old jeeps kept on the road by the guys who drive them. And I respect that.
Thanks for another nice break in the day, Matt. And also for another "fuel for thought" topic. I'm sorry, but for me the whole jeep wave thing was about comraderie for the brand. Years ago I bought my first 89 XJ and had a small lift, original BFG mud terrains, a lock right in the Dana 35, and a roof rack and Tomken bumpers. Jeep waves all day long. Seems now with the JKs and newer JLs, that there is now a social status line drawn between anything 2007 and newer. "It's an income status thing", and I wouldn't understand. I see more JKs and JLs in the bays of the nearest 4wd shops paying for inclusion to the jeeping community while the "loyal to the soil" crowd is toiling past midnight in their own garages! Call me old-fashioned, but there's alot to be said for working on your rig and familiarizing yourself with it. Blood , sweat, and tears makes a jeeper. Not credit cards and cappuccinos. Gonna get hate mail...I can feel it.
Have to agree about the motor. I have the 3.6 in my JK and love the power even lifted with 35's compared to the old 4.0. As for the wave I always do it it's fun to have a little connection to other jeepers.
always waving in my lifted patriot, usually never do it to wranglers unless they initiate it because they are the king of the jungle. other than the wrangler, i think everyone else is equal and i wave to pretty much every jeep i see (except for compasses and renegades unless they’ve been modified).
I just love the jet sounding cooling fan, and the death wobble steering is also pretty cool. Why do we love Jeeps so much when they are no way worth the cost we pay for them?
You should only get a wave if you're a true Jeeple. Most 4 door Wranglers and JKs and JLs in general do not deserve waves. Half the time they don't wave at all even though they should wave at me first since I have a TJ and their Jeep is newer. However if I see a 4 door that is clearly used to off road regularly I'll even wave first.
You should get a jeep wave in any jeep that is obviously rated for offroad. I am not talking about a stock Grand Cherokee, but if one is on 35's, clearly deserves a jeep wave. Includes Commanders, Cherokee, Wrangler, etc
Is there a fix for the oil breather issue that turns them in to locomotives when pointing steeply upward? That would be my biggest concern. Like what happened to the black one in the trail to sema
I bought my first Jeep in 1978 a CJ7. That was in the UP of Michigan. Back then EVERY Jeep I passed waved. Flash forward I bought my newest Jeep Feb 2019, now I’m lucky if 1 of 10 jeeps wave back. WTF has happened? Of course I live in Ca these days!
Waves are for modded Jeeps. If you have changed something about your Jeep that improves it's off road capabilities, you care about the vehicle and the "Jeep way of life". If you drive a stock vehicle that never leaves pavement, congrats you picked a great one, but you are missing out. Just my opinion.
My ZJ gets no waves back so I stopped trying. Granted, it appears pretty stock, but I converted it from 2WD to 4WD and swapped in an AX-15 Manual transmission, and upcountry suspension. I have been getting a lot more respect though since I moved from TN to New England. Seeing a rust-free 5-speed ZJ has been equivalent to a UFO sighting off the road. I've had quite a few conversations with Jeepers up here about it 0.0
I drive an XJ and wave at all Jeeps. Usually, the XJ/ZJ/WJs all wave, most of the Wranglers, and not many of the other models - seems like they have no clue they are driving a "Jeep". They probably even call it "my car", not "my Jeep". My wife drives a JKU and says she also gets the wave and plenty of complements...certainly a step up from minivan life, LOL!
I make a point of waiving at the older Jeeps because I know if I don't they will. The JK's and JL's is a toss up, to whether or not you will get a response so I just wait to see if they will. Many of the hipsters driving those Fiats, don't really know the wave ettiquet any how.
Nice old timer slam! Remember when you had to look before driving?lol!the best thing I like about the JL is the...Yj...thank you. F##k snobbs that are too good to wave!
Also watching your video about 9 things you hate about your Jeep, it seems like there's more cons than pros--at least the cons seem to really outweigh the pros. Because of this, how much do you really love your Jeep? On a scale of 1 to 10? With an explanation, maybe? I am really curious.
Have you owned a JK? Some of these things you talk about were present in the JK and the changed amount is negligible... freedom top, sound bar, oil filter location, visibility... These things are all the same as the JK. How are these better then the JK. The JL comes standard with 3.73 but most JK have the optional 3.73 in them because it's part of the tow package. Every JK with a hitch has 3.73. P.S. Not trying to nit pick. lol Love your videos. keep it up.

leroy's hack shack My first Wrangler had Kenda Klever 31x9.50x15s (upgraded from the stock size. It was a 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sahara Edition. I took that thing through deep mud pits, complicated technical trails, areas Jeeps on 37’s-40’s had trouble in and more. I only got stuck two times in the years I owned that Jeep. Believe me, I gave my self plenty of opportunities to get stuck. I pulled my buddies Jeep out with it a few times. He had a 1992 YJ on 33’s with a 4 inch lift and a long list of other modifications. I would consider my first Jeep to be fairly “stock”, yet I wheeled it hard. Now I own a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport. Both the Wranglers I’ve owned were the 4.0. The first one was automatic. The one I have now is a 5-speed. My Jeep now is on 35x12.50x15 Mickey Thompson BAJA MTZP3’s. It has a 4.5 inch lift. My Axle’s are geared with 4.10 gears. I’m running a built T-case and an SYE. My rear drive shaft is all Synergy parts. I have upgraded axle seals, shafts and diff covers. My transmission is built up a little bit as well. I have lights, bumpers, a winch, a spare tire carrier, hi-lift on the hood and more. I have upgraded sway bar links, HD knuckle to knuckle steering components and more. My current Jeep is the furthest thing from factory. However, between my first Wrangler and the current Wrangler I still miss my first Wrangler. It didn’t cost as much to fix, parts were semi easier to come by(because they were “stock” parts” and it got me through hell and back. Saying you only wave to “fellow off-roaders” is like saying you only wave to guys wearing the same color socks as you. How the hell are you supposed to know if they’re off-roaders or not? The Jeep community is about a COMMUNITY. Not only waving to people you think off road. The Jeep club I’m in has a Jeeps worth 60-70 and 80 grand. The modifications done to some of these Jeeps are mind boggling. The reason I point this out is because some of those guys daily drive “stock” Jeeps so they can leave their toys at home. Hell, Matt daily drives a Toyota Tundra and he has XJ’s that make my TJ look like a tampon. Just pointing out facts and stirring the pot. That is all.
Some of the mods you can't see just passing them on the road. It takes time and money to upgrade a Jeep! Have a 1998 TJ I am in the process of restoring to original (currently stripped down to a bare frame) yet I wouldn't get the "wave" just because it appears stock to you? I have currently spent $5000 ; I expect it to take another $5000 or so to complete and that is just the money not counting the time involved! So if you see me on the road when finished don't bother to wave! The jeep is about the Jeep community; a Jeep is a Jeep!
@@joenorris449 do you take it off road? Will it appear to have been off road? If not then no wave for you... If so, or I see you on the trail even if it's the gravel maybe
Ill be that guy.. I don't wave. I know.. but I can't wave at every other person driving the same truck as I do. Am I being a dick? IDK, maybe. But that's a lot of waving. Just to acknowledge we drive the same model of vehicles.
The recriprocation of the wave always let's me know why the other person drives their Jeep. It's like "yeah, we both can't hear our radios above 35 mph, easily fit in our vehicles garages, visit the gas pump less than 3 times a week, but we don't care, and we understand each other"
@@cameronwilliams7930 I get that. Lucky mine isnt a my daily, for that I have a Subaru, which I also get waved at in. I think life is telling me something....

The Jeep wave is like the motorcycle wave. More annoying than anything.
A JL is like child support, takes 18 years to pay off.
Do you love its crash test ratings? Because fiat chrysler seriously wants you to die in a crash.
All the other jeeps suck (barring scramblers and trucks). Jeep wave on J's only!
I wave at fellow off-roaders. A stock Jeep gets no love from me.
Define stock. Stock means different things to different people, and some of the best wheeling is done in a "stock" older Jeep.
leroy's hack shack My first Wrangler had Kenda Klever 31x9.50x15s (upgraded from the stock size.
@@Abstruseish the LJ that Matt has here. Stock....
Cameron Williams To me its a Jeep thing. It’s a lifestyle. But I cruise a TJR.
Traitor!!!!!
