    The complexity of designing a new car with this many system is going to have bugs. I'm sure many people know the absolute mind boggling amount of code it takes. Like or not new cars are becoming more and more computerized. This is the reason we get more hp out of a v6 today then we did 2 v8s from the 80s and get better mileage and reliability. That said it sucks cause I like to tinker and these manufacturers are doing everything they can to make you bring it to them for repairs. My dad has a 2016 grand Cherokee overland, the damn thing has 15 computers, no way he or myself are touching that. Looks like the jl is going in the same direction, but they have to so they can compete. Guess the whole argument just reminds me of the fight against fuel injection. Its here to stay just gonna have to get used to it..
    But that is some surprising cheap materials for the price range, and hopefully they will have a few of the bugs and oversights fixed soon. Can't believe you can drive off without the key. No one thought to put a proximity sensor on a refresh rate.

      Horsepower numbers dropped in the late 70s and 80s because of the oil crisis and stringent emissions policies, not because automobile manufacturers couldn't build an engine. Yes, you can get more power out of less displacement by manipulating fuel maps, timing, and cam profile by using a computer to monitor parameters thousands of times per second in today's world, but formula1 reached the limits of the combustion engine in the late 80s and early 90s (about 1 hp per cc). Now its all about thermal efficiency. And the major tradeoff to that is reliability.

    I bought my '12 JK brand new, trading in my '98 TJ. I still really like it. It's my 5th Wrangler, in a row.
    But I won't be buying another new Jeep. They are not aiming the new ones to their previous customer base. They have become overpriced, tech heavy, complicated vehicles, that are designed to be brought to the dealership for service.
    Am I the only person who thinks the new pickup is going to be a quick ending fad? Ford Explorer Sport Trac, Subaru Baja, Hummer HT(?) , people that bought these soon realized that they either needed a real pickup bed, or they didn't need a pickup at all.

    It's crazy how people complain about things on new vehicles when every vehicle that I have ever owned has had these same issues! I've had previous vehicles with worse issues that they shouldn't have had. There are new vehicles on the market from all manufacturers that have issues. I have to constantly remind everyone that these machines are built by humans who aren't perfect. No matter what vehicle you get, some have issues and some don't. BLUF: Drive what you like, like what you drive!

  • @matthewgiroux353
    @matthewgiroux353 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    - Many of the issues mentioned boil-over from the JK
    - Cracking winshield - unless you got a 2007 - 2011 windshield, expect cracks on a yearly basis
    - The seatbelt buckle sticky fabric - This is also found on the JK and is designed to prevent your buckle from scratching the center console.
    Im glad they include it as a stick on fabric - makes it easier to replace when it wears out (or peels off) imo.
    - The Tailgate window seal - Same as on the JKs. i work in a wrangler mod shop and you might be surprised, but those seals rarely need to be changed.
    - Tailgate - like JK's, taking out the panel covering the trunk pocket is the only way around that one on most wranglers since the tailgate started coming out sideways
    - Rocks in the Fender Flares - JKs have that issue (slightly less so). I guess its the price we pay to have removable fender flares.
    - Comfortability - you have to look at where the wrangler is coming from. The JL's interior is superior to the JK's, which was superior to the TJ's.
    Not many vehicles come with dead pedals - the JK and TJ didn't - luckily, thats where the after market comes in
    To allow the Tires to stick out more, the body needs to stay narrow - obviously this cuts out shoulder space.
    The JL has a telescopic steering wheel, giving you much more comfort than the JK fixed steering wheel distance.
    - Play in the steering wheel - Same for all Wranglers - the steering system has a lot of joints in it, and each joint contributes to some play. The play is necessary in order for the jeep to handle larger tires or rough terrain. You can easily tighten the steering box to your liking to reduce the play, but the tighter you go, you might find that its road manners on ruts and uneven roads at higher speeds become jarring, unpredictable, and difficult to manage. (very similar effect to having a steering damper that is too tight).

      Joby Fluorine so the windows being weak isn’t a sign nor the recall for the faulty frame welds or death wobble. Yes it’s a old wives tail but I’d never buy a brand new off the lot the first year ever. • @joseybarra2046
      @joseybarra2046 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The flaw in this logic of "don't buy brand new vehicles the first few years" is that it can really only work for a small few. If nobody bought a newly released model, then that "beta testing" would never happen, and by the third or fourth year of production (or whenever you say to buy) the vehicle will STILL have all those initial problems. Besides, this is why warranties were invented.

    You can disengage the AutoOff mechanism (that shuts off the vehicle at a stop), by removing the plunger switch under the hood, laying it horizontal to the frame and zip tying it off. This will give you an small AutoOff warning light on the dash, but you no longer have to worry about it shutting down the engine. This is easily reversed by simply reinstalling the plunger switch.

    A lot of these issues go back to previous Jeeps. The TJ didn’t have any arm rest whatsoever, and the hardtop/seals are nearly identical to the JK. The JK also has that water leak when you open the door in the same place, and the window controls in the center. I do believe that the seals in the JL look a little thinner. The hood latch thing would piss me off too.
    I drive a 2 door JK with the regular hydraulic steering. It drives the same as my friend’s ‘97 XJ and my 04 WJ, but that makes sense because they have the same axle and steering components / geometry. There’s play, and it will always strive for the ditch on a heavily crowned road. However, I do believe there is an issue with the electric assist steering in the JL.
    The key thing is plain dumb. On a new Grand Cherokee with the engine running, the Jeep will beep at you if the key leaves the vehicle and will continue to beep until it’s returned.
    The JK also has issues with rocks in the fenders, but not nearly as bad.
    And the engine stop start is very annoying, and government mandated, but it can easily be disabled by disconnecting a cable under the hood (there’s a TH-cam video about this) and plugged back in to work at any time.

  • @nix4644

    Enjoyed the video, your presentation was quite funny. Reminded me somewhat of Red Green (remember him?)
    The key fob issue is common on just about every car that has one. That very thing happened to me (2014 Ford Escape) when I took my wife to the airport and she had the fob in her purse. Luckily I was able to get her attention in the terminal before she went into the security area. That would have been one costly mistake. I had a brand new 1983 Jeep Laredo back in the day when AMC made them, OMG, what a piece of crap. If TH-cam was available back then, I could have made a two hour video on what was wrong with it, and a two minute one on what was right. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to make the video.

I had a real nice drift going on a left turn to test out the motor (was a rental pickup for getting a fridge) And it waited for me to get about a 40 degree deviation from where the truck was pointing to where it was going, (all this with all of the nanny equipment turned off) Then it did a full cut of all engine power, Nearly sent me into a pole. Luckily I reacted fast enough and countersteered sharply to avoid the pole.
      ^ Thats just an example of how traction control and stability control systems can try to kill you even if you have them turned off.
      My other no-go on cars is cars that use V-belts instead of serpentine to drive water pumps.

    You know there was a girl that follows my channel had that annoying rain leak at the front doors of her Wrangler. I used my rubber roofing seam tape and a piece of rubber to deflect the water back to the windshield area. I don't suggest trying it yet till I know how the thing works out 4 her... I haven't heard back from her but it does not mean I won't not yet too early to tell.

    It is much easier to work on computer controlled vehicles then mechanical. I learned that almost 20 years ago when my computer controlled fuel injection on my motorcycle could be hooked up to a computer and remapped. That's much easier then fiddling with jets in carburetors. The problem comes when the computer crashes or memory corrupts and you can't finagle a kotter pin and some bailing wire to get home. Sometimes vehicles meant to be taken into remote locations need to be able to be finagled.😁

    I think a problem unrelated to just Jeeps, but related to all new cars, is dealers will finance almost anyone which then artificially drives up MSRP on cars. Therefore, you get all these cheap "fixes" to previous model prices and MSRP remains the same. Sometimes I get jealous of newer JK and JL rigs but I love my 96 XJ even more after watching this.

  • @crisrobinson4146
    @crisrobinson4146 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    A few of my own thoughts...
    1) The hood latch is to reduce hood flutter which had been an issue with Jeeps at high speeds.
    2) EVERY modern late model car will require software updates. My 2015 Mustang has it too, its done by USB and a download from Ford. RTFM.
    3) You can get the sound dampening option, or an after market kit for the roof which will cut down the rain noise. It's a Jeep... A 5.0 mustang isn't really a quiet car either so it's par for the course.
    4) The windshield has always been an issue as it is almost perpendicular to the hood and rocks don't skip off as easily. The windshield drops down so just do that! ( Sarcasm). Remember, you are driving a brick into the wind!
    5) If the plastic parts break, FCA will most likely replace them under Warranty.
    6) Get a tray with velcro on the bottom for the groceries if you have to unload on a hill. Same would happen on my Murano. It's not just a Jeep thing. Use your head.
    7) All my cars with push button start will still run when my wife walks away with the key. It happens all the time. The Murano and Mustang beep or honk if the FOB goes too far away but sometimes not until she is already in the mall... DOH!
    8) Yeah, window controls don't have to be on the dash in reality. it's just a switch. It's one of those "It's always been done this way" things. The window motor, power and all the electronics are already in the door. That should have changed long ago.
    9) Auto stop\start is incredibly STUPID, I agree, at least you can program it to be disabled. It is disabled in 4W low as you DON'T want the engine shutting off when doing a tricky ascent or descent at MOAB!
    10) Water dripping in... I have a Mustang convertible so I feel the pain. It's part of the ownership experience!

    MY 2015 KIA optima ..... any time the key gets too far from the car ( and a 2nd inst inside ) , it lets out a conveniently long and annoying beep. Also don't quote me but i think it reads a message on the instrument cluster as well.
    Additionally if there are two keys in the car and you get out with only one of them, you cant lock the door using the button on the door. but you can lock it with the 2nd fob from outside the car. It knows you left a key inside so its basically impossible to lock your self out.
    Another cool thing , there is a little socket in the glove box to stuff the key into if the key battery is dead but with the key inserted... its basically in the "ACC ignition" mode. You have to take it out to turn the car all the way off.
    The actual key blade only inserts into driver door. There is no key hole on the glove box or trunk which is a little crappy. otherwise the car seems to be very aware and generally lets you know about about the key or keys availability.
    You'd think jeep could use some of these same ideas.

    Good video. I have a JKU Sport for my daily driver and a JK Sport for my wife's daily driver. I got each for $28k. They are fairly well loaded too--AC, PW, PDL, Running Boards, etc, The new JL starts at nearly $40k, so up to now I've thought of that as my only reason for not trading up. But this video got me to thinking about the complexity of the JL electronics. Ugh. To me, the more electronics that control the vehicle for me, the more crazy problems there are lurking around each corner. I now have two reasons to just stick with JKs. My wife and I absolutely love these two Jeeps, and in 8 years I've had only ONE repair: My radiator needed replacing at 89,000 miles. Hers hasn't been in the shop yet. BTW, the new radiator was less than $300.
